Russia Planning Attack on Poland to Test Nato Resolve, US Warns

Russia is planning an armed “provocation” on Polish soil to test Nato’s resolve, the United States has warned.

Polish critical infrastructure could be targeted by missiles and drones or Russian soldiers could cross the border into Nato territory.

Washington has issued several warnings to Warsaw about the plot, sources close to Karol Nawrocki, the Polish president, told Onet, the Polish news outlet, which, along with The Telegraph, is owned by Axel Springer and is part of its Global Reporters Network.

The goal of the Russian provocation would be to escalate tensions and force Western allies to suspend aid to Ukraine. It could be launched in a matter of months. » | Witold Jurasz in Warsaw. James Rothwell, Berlin Correspondent. Joe Barnes, Diplomatic Editor | Friday, July 3, 2026

Israel's 'Kill First' Strategy Is Now Aimed at Turkey | The David Hearst Podcast

Jul 2, 2026 | David Hearst, editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye, says that Donald Trump has signed two contradictory agreements to end his war on Iran. One promises an “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”, while the other gives Israeli forces occupying parts of southern Lebanon indefinite leave to remain.

Hearst says the Lebanon framework weakens Lebanese sovereignty, creates a military coordination group run from Washington, and obliges the Lebanese army to disarm Hezbollah, which many in Lebanon see as the only credible deterrent against Israeli attack.

He says that Lebanon has also granted immunity to Israeli troops and generals for war crimes committed during the invasion. He says that the contradiction reflects a tug of war inside the US administration. The Iran deal reflects the thinking of Vice President JD Vance, who opposed regime change in Tehran, while the Lebanon deal bears the imprint of Marco Rubio, who remains committed to that project.

Hearst argues that Israel’s failure to dictate terms to Iran has pushed it to regain power in Lebanon and Syria. But he says Israel is already turning its attention to Turkey, now presenting it as the “new Iran” and warning of a new Sunni axis involving Turkey, Syria and Qatar.

He concludes that Israel means what it says when Netanyahu vows to change the Middle East forever. The main battle line is now shifting to Lebanon and Syria, and hard power will be needed to stop Israel’s strategy of “kill them first”.

The Meloni Effect: Has Italy's Prime Minister Delivered on Her Promises? • FRANCE 24 English

July 3, 2026 | Three and a half years after becoming Italy's first female head of government, Giorgia Meloni remains one of Europe's most influential and controversial leaders.

From her working-class roots in Rome's Garbatella district to debates over immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, and Italy's future, France 24's reporters investigate the impact of the "Meloni Effect" on everyday Italians.

A story by Natalia Mendoza, Tommaso Marro, Bernard Bedarida and Charlotte Davan Wetton.

Giorgia Meloni insists that she is a Christian. But where are her Christian values? Clearly, they are missing. It is impossible to be a good Christian without practising compassion and mercy for the downtrodden and the marginalised. Jesus sought out society’s outcasts and gave them centre-space in his teachings and ministry. Those were the poor, the sick, women, children, and sinners. So, trying to practise Christianity and making life difficult for the marginalised and downtrodden is not in accordance with the will of Jesus, ergo, not in accordance with the will of God.

If we are to be considered believers in Christianity, then we are all to believe that we are God’s children. If we are born a particular way with particular characteristics, with particular likes and dislikes, with particular inclinations and disinclinations, and in particular social circumstances, then it is because God created us to be that way.

No good God would want any one of his children to be treated badly. This is not rocket science; rather, it is common sense!

It is high time for those who espouse their adherence to Christianity to live by its teachings. They need to refrain from making up their own interpretations. There is but one version of Christianity, and that is Jesus Christ’s version! — © Mark Alexander

King to ‘Protect Multi-faith Nation’ in Revised Definition of Monarchy

THE TELEGRAPH: His Majesty’s redrafted job description also includes ‘strengthening the UK’s social fabric and cohesion’

The King’s official job is to protect faith “within the multi-faith nation”, under a newly published palace definition of the monarch’s role.

The King, who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England, will “protect the space for Faith” under a redrafted job description from Buckingham Palace.

Published in the annual review of the Royal family’s finances, the Sovereign Grant report 2025-26, it changes the description of the King’s role as “Head of Nation” from last year, when he was the “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith”.

This year it goes further to specify: “His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.”

Before the King’s coronation, there was debate over whether the King would choose to be “Defender of Faith” in the plural, rather than “the Faith” as his Christian ancestors had been. In the event, he chose the traditional wording.

But he has made interfaith dialogue one of the cornerstones of his working life, both as Prince of Wales and now as King. He speaks regularly of the Abrahamic faiths and undertakes engagements with the Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Orthodox, and other religious communities in Britain and around the world. » | Hannah Furness | Royal Editor | Friday, June 26, 2026

When you try to be all things to all men, you are in danger of ending up being nothing to anyone!

When Queen Elizabeth II died, something great about this nation died with her.

This decision by the monarchy could well, in the long run, turn out to be yet another nail in its coffin!

The British monarchy is in a parlous state anyway, especially because of the scandal brought upon it by the former Prince Andrew, who is now known merely as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

We are supposed to be a democracy. Whether we are or not is, of course, very debatable indeed. As far as I am concerned, this country doesn’t measure up. Far too many things happen without the consent of the people. This decision by the monarchy is a case in point. What do the British people feel about this momentous decision to downgrade Christianity as the nation’s faith?

Moreover, with Islam growing apace in this country, and with Muslims’ rock-solid antipathy towards homosexuality, how long will it be before King Charles goes along with the harsh punishment of queers in this nation? Does the king envisage rubber-stamping such harsh and ludicrous punishments for two men or women loving each other?

King Charles needs to start living in the real world, hard though it would be for him to do so. He needs to understand one very important thing about Islam: there is no such thing as Islam-lite. When it comes to Islam, it’s the real deal, or nothing!

With all this going on at the top of the British establishment, maybe the time has come for the British people to start giving headspace to the idea that this country might well, one day, become a republic. It was 250 years ago that Americans rejected the British king. Maybe now, 250 years later, the time has come for the British themselves to do the same! — © Mark Alexander

Burnham Set to Ditch Palantir from NHS

THE TELEGRAPH: Left-wing critics have called for deal to be axed over US tech giant’s work with Israeli Defense Forces and US immigration

Andy Burnham is set to ditch Palantir from the NHS, The Telegraph can reveal.

The prime minister-in-waiting did not grant the US tech company any contracts during his nine years as Greater Manchester mayor, and is minded to take the same approach in No 10.

Mr Burnham is reviewing the Government’s overall artificial intelligence strategy, and an aide said he believed “unfettered tech boosterism” was turning off voters.

In his first keynote speech on Monday, he said he wanted to see social value play a larger part in contracts awarded by the Government.

Mr Burnham is expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as soon as July 20, and will then have to decide whether to cut ties with Palantir two years into its seven-year, £330m NHS deal. » | Dominic Penna | Senior Political Correspondent | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Tucker Carlson, Who Broke With Trump, Plans to ‘Help Build a Third Party’

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The influential conservative commentator’s relationship with the president and the G.O.P. fractured over the war with Iran. Now, he says he is charting a new course.

Tucker Carlson, the influential conservative media commentator, said in an interview that he planned to help start a new political party after leaving the Republican Party, but that he had no interest in running for office.

Mr. Carlson, a former close ally of President Trump who has broken with the Republican Party over the war with Iran, told the Columbia Journalism Review that he was “going to help build a third party.”

“There should be a good-faith effort to figure out what benefits the country,” Mr. Carlson said in an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review published Wednesday.

He outlined his plans at a moment of upheaval for both parties: The insurgent left appears ascendant in the Democratic Party as the base has grown angry over the party leadership’s stance on Israel since the war in Gaza. The Republican Party has been fractured by Mr. Trump’s handling of the war with Iran.

Mr. Carlson, a popular podcaster and former Fox News host, said last month that he was leaving the Republican Party. He described himself on a podcast episode as a “consistent defender” of the party for 35 years, but said that he believed the party had lost touch with “America first” principles under Mr. Trump. » | Tim Balk | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Ghana: - Its Anti-Gay Law Must Surely Be Vetoed in the Name of Commonn Sense, Mercy, and Compassion

AVAAZ: Days ago Parliament passed a horrific anti-gay bill. If it becomes law, innocent people could be locked up when all they want is to love in peace. Many have gone into hiding. Others are already fleeing the country.

But let’s not lose hope.

President Nana Akufo-Addo could veto the bill and stop it from becoming law. We know he doesn't actually support it - he understands how bad it is for Ghana’s international reputation.

“We are deeply worried about the national bill that plans to send people to prison because of their sexual orientation. We call on you to veto the anti-gay bill to become law in Ghana.”

Please sign this PETITION to help veto this outrageous bill.

UGANDA: Further, we have less than two weeks to tell the world Wendy and Diana's story.
What would you risk to kiss the one you love? Wendy and Diana, a young lesbian couple in Uganda, risked everything. And now the government wants to lock them in prison because of who they love. Brave LGBT+ champions inside Uganda are saying that an international outcry could be enough to push authorities to set Wendy and Diana free. But time is running out – their trial starts in less than two weeks and they’re facing years behind bars.
Please sign this PETITION to help these two young ladies. Time is running out. Please sign the petition here.

Mass Mournings, 6 Days and 2 Countries: Iran Prepares to Bury Supreme Leader

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Long-delayed funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed during U.S.-Israeli strikes at the war’s outset, are set to begin Friday. For the regime, it is a critical moment to demonstrate that it has endured.

There are few analogues in history for the size, scale and import of the funeral that Iran’s government is preparing to hold for its slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Starting Friday in the capital, Tehran, and running for nearly a week, with ceremonies planned in at least five cities across Iran and Iraq, the funeral is expected to draw tens of millions of people, government officials have said.

Perhaps more striking than the funeral’s complexity and scope is its symbolism at this moment. It comes more than four months after Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in February at the outset of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, and six months after Iran was gripped by nationwide protests calling for an end to his government.

While millions of mourners are expected to turn out next week, many Iranians remain deeply dissatisfied with what Ayatollah Khamenei’s reign brought to their country over nearly four decades of authoritarian rule. He oversaw brutal repression, including the imprisonment, torture and killing of dissidents, and presided over widening corruption and the increasing control of much of Iran’s wealth by its security forces.

When it became clear that he had been killed, some in Iran celebrated openly, at great risk to themselves.

Ayatollah Khamenei was not only Iran’s head of state. He also presented himself as an authoritative Shiite Muslim cleric. He had devotees in Iraq and Lebanon, where his portrait is often seen at Shiite rallies, as well as in Pakistan and other countries in the region. » | Yeganeh Torbati | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Giovanni Siracusa: Sicilian Potato Salad

Apr 11, 2026 | This healthy potato salad is prefect for hot weather.

The first time I ever had a potato salad with mayonnaise was at a friend's house, and his whole family was laughing at me because this is the potato salad I was used to.

Whether you eat it warm, cold, or the next day, it always tastes great. It’s a perfect Mediterranean diet dish on its own, but it’s also incredible with some tuna on top for a high-protein lunch, or served as a side to grilled meat, chicken, or fish.

I like to make this potato salad and keep it in the refrigerator to pick at for a few days.

My grandmother made this all the time and she sometimes added green beans or any fresh vegetables from the garden. So, if you’re tired of the normal potato salad with mayo and want an easy summer salad that actually tastes fresh, this Sicilian classic is for you.

Sweet oranges, crisp fennel, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. It sounds simple because it is, and that's exactly the point. No cooking, just fresh ingredients the way they were meant to be eaten.

Growing up, this salad was just part of life. My family in Sicily makes it all the time and it shows up at every gathering and disappears before anything else on the table. It's one of those dishes you only really find in Sicily.

Grab some bread to soak up the juice at the bottom of the plate and you've got yourself a perfect bite.

Russia Hammers Ukraine’s Capital in Deadly Attacks

THE NEW YORK TIMES: At least 18 people were killed in Kyiv, the local authorities said. Ukraine’s president had warned that Moscow was preparing a “massive strike” as Ukrainian forces have hit deeper into Russian territory.

The Russian military blasted Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with waves of ballistic missiles and drones that lasted into Thursday morning, a deadly show of force after weeks of Ukrainian attacks within Russia that have heaped pressure on President Vladimir V. Putin.

At least 18 people were killed and more than 30 injured in the attacks, Ukrainian officials said, as firefighters raced to extinguish blazes in several districts of the capital. Several apartment buildings were partially destroyed and an unknown number of people were trapped in the rubble, according to the local authorities.

The Russian barrage was the latest in the deadliest spring for Ukraine since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, as Ukrainian strikes prompt Mr. Putin to respond militarily. Ukraine has been bringing the war home to Russia by using long-range drones and cruise missiles to attack fuel facilities and military installations deep inside Russia and in occupied Crimea.

These attacks have caused widespread fuel shortages and have eroded Mr. Putin’s ability to insulate large parts of his country, including Moscow, the capital, from the war.

Ukraine’s strategy on the battlefield rests on forcing the Russian military to pay a heavy price for every mile of land it seizes while raising the economic costs for the Kremlin. Moscow believes it can outlast Kyiv’s outnumbered forces on the front while inflicting such a heavy human and economic toll that it breaks the will of civilians, according to Western military analysts.

In a statement on Thursday, Russia’s defense ministry called the strikes on Kyiv a response to Ukraine’s recent attacks inside Russia.

Many Kyiv residents had been bracing for a large-scale Russian assault in part because about two weeks had passed since the last one, giving Moscow time to stockpile missiles and drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine had warned in recent days that Russia was preparing another “massive strike,” and he urged people to be “especially careful.” Live Updates » | Cassandra Vinograd | Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Young Indonesian Couple Publicly Caned after Kissing on TikTok

THE GUARDIAN: Unmarried man and woman whipped 21 times each because they had violated province’s version of Islamic law

A young couple in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province have been publicly caned after a Sharia court convicted them of violating Islamic law by kissing during a TikTok livestream.

The court ordered the couple, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, to be whipped with a rattan cane 21 times each for kissing without being married. At least 100 people witnessed the caning, carried out by a group of people wearing robes and hoods on a stage in Bustanussalatin City Park in Banda Aceh.

The couple were arrested in April after a livestream from 27 February, in which they kissed in a car in Banda Aceh, went viral and prompted reports to local sharia authorities.

Aceh is the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia that enforces a version of Islamic law. The country’s secular central government granted the province the right to implement religious law in 2006 as part of a peace deal to end a separatist war. » | Associated Press in Banda Aceh | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Trump Suggestion of a Syrian Crackdown on Hezbollah Confounds Many in Mideast

THE NEW YORK TIMES: During peace talks, President Trump repeatedly floated the idea that Syria could help subdue Hezbollah in Lebanon. The proposal revived bitter memories.

When the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon was threatening to unravel the U.S.-Iran peace deal, President Trump repeatedly floated an idea that took many in the region by surprise.

Neighboring Syria, whose relatively new government is no friend to Hezbollah, could help subdue the Iran-backed Lebanese militia.

The proposal revived bitter memories in Lebanon, which the Syrian military occupied for nearly three decades. It also baffled Syrians, whose government has made clear over and over again that it has no interest in meddling in its neighbors’ affairs or entering into more wars.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa reiterated that stance last week, rebuffing the notion that his U.S.-allied government was preparing to intervene militarily in Lebanon. » | Christina Goldbaum and Raja Abdulrahim | Christina Goldbaum reported from Beirut, Lebanon, and Raja Abdulrahim from Amman, Jordan. | Wednesday, July 1, 2026

How the Iran War Ignited a Clash Between Trump and the Saudi Crown Prince

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pressed President Trump earlier to cripple Iran. But as Iran asserted its power, the prince urged a cease-fire, and is now pursuing his security priorities.

President Trump and his military commanders were in a bind.

They had announced the start of a new mission to help guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had effectively closed early in the war. U.S. naval and air power would ward off any Iranian attacks during a tentative cease-fire, the commanders said.

But U.S. Central Command was caught by surprise when officials from Saudi Arabia said American forces could not use the kingdom’s air space for the mission, which the Pentagon was calling Project Freedom. The Americans had not consulted the Saudis.

That set off a flurry of tense and urgent phone calls between Washington and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the leader of Saudi Arabia. An outraged Mr. Trump spoke with him on May 4, the first day of the operation, and on the next two days as well, U.S. officials said.

Vice President JD Vance talked to the prince in a separate call, as did Steve Witkoff, the special envoy to the Middle East, and Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law. Marco Rubio, the White House national security adviser, spoke to his counterpart.

But the crown prince stood his ground, fearing that the American plan could reignite war. The Trump administration was forced to shut down Project Freedom less than 48 hours after it had begun.

“They had lost confidence in the administration, and they thought if they let the U.S. use their airspace, they would get hit even harder by Iran,” said Hussein Ibish, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. » | Edward Wong | Edward Wong has reported from Washington on U.S. policy in the Middle East over three administrations.

» | Peter Steiniger | Mittwoch, 1. Juli 2026

Crimea Back in Play? Russia Feels Pain of Ukraine Long-range Strikes • FRANCE 24 English

Jun 30, 2026 | A couple of weeks back, we asked if the tide was turning in Ukraine. The short answer: a little, but it's hard to cut through the fog of war. Now, we're beginning to wonder if Crimea could be back in play. Kyiv's new line of longer-range missiles and drones are wreaking havoc on fuel and power supplies. And while Russia continues to inch forward in other frontline flashpoints, the peninsula occupied in 2014 by Vladimir Putin's little green men has never looked so vulnerable.

A Ukrainian offensive still seems like a pipe dream. Instead, is the current pressure a way to force concessions out of a Kremlin forced to admit what's all over Russian social media: that petrol stations across Russia are running on empty because of those long-range strikes? Will Vladimir Putin compromise or double down?

And what do Crimeans themselves want? Most seemed happy to vote yes in a referendum to rejoin a Russia they only left in 1954. More broadly, what consequences for the entire Black Sea region, which since 2022 has alternated between periods of war, disruption and mutually agreed calm to allow both sides to ship goods? The Black Sea is of course shared with Turkey, which hosts next week's timely NATO summit.
