All gasoline sold in the country contains 30 percent ethanol, and most Brazilian cars run on flex-fuel engines, a locally developed technology that lets drivers choose between gasoline and ethanol at the pump. The industry's backers say consumers have saved more than 40 billion dollars over the past three decades thanks to that flexibility.
Now, the next chapter is taking shape: Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, including BYD, are working to integrate Brazil's flex-fuel system into hybrid EVs, with the first ethanol-compatible hybrid set to launch in the coming weeks. Adoptée le mois dernier par une Assemblée législative où la majorité des élus font partie du groupe politique de Nayib Bukele, cette réforme remplace l’ancienne législation qui plafonnait la peine des mineurs à 60 ans d’emprisonnement. Ce lundi 13 avril, un gigantesque anneau sous forme de montage photographique a poussé au centre de Téhéran. Une main, sortant de la manche kaki d’un gardien de la révolution, empoigne le détroit d’Ormuz pour empêcher les navires américains de passer. « À jamais entre les mains de l’Iran », prévient un texte en persan, assorti d’un défi au blocus imposé par Washington : « Trump n’a rien pu faire ! » Alors que le président américain menace, en plein cessez-le-feu, de renforcer les sanctions contre le secteur pétrolier iranien, le poster géant est à l’image du nouveau pouvoir iranien : décapité par quarante jours de guerre, mais toujours debout et provoquant. « Donald Trump avait imaginé, à tort, que s’il coupait les têtes, le régime iranien allait s’effondrer. Or, le régime ne s’est pas effondré. Au contraire, il s’est militarisé et radicalisé », relève l’économiste Thierry Coville, chercheur à l’Iris et spécialiste de l’Iran.

Laleh Khalili, a professor of Gulf studies who researches the shipping and logistics industry and its impact on the global economy says it could lead the U.S. military to begin “firing on ships that it assumes are Iranian or carrying oil from Iran or other cargo to Iran.” Iran, in response, could “interpret this as a belligerent action,” ending the fragile ceasefire agreed to by both parties. “Iran is going to defend itself against this imperial imposition, and how it's going to do that remains to be seen.”
Meanwhile, explains Khalili, shipping disruptions in the Gulf have affected the supply chains of key resources including oil, aluminum, helium and fertilizer. "Transportation costs are going to be higher, so food prices are going to be higher; people's MRIs are going to be scheduled out by six months … semiconductor manufacturing is going to be affected," Khalili says. "The crisis is only going to get more horrific before it gets any better."

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth urged Iran’s leaders to “choose wisely” and threatened more attacks. The war’s mounting economic toll has put political pressure on President Trump to find an off-ramp.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday threatened U.S. attacks on Iran’s power plants and other energy sites if its leaders did not agree to a peace deal, less than a week before a temporary cease-fire is set to expire.
Speaking at a news conference at the Pentagon, Mr. Hegseth repeatedly urged Iran’s leaders to “choose wisely” and said an American naval blockade of Iranian ports would continue “as long as it takes.” The Trump administration has alternated between assuring Americans that a peace deal was within reach and threatening Iran’s leadership if it does not comply, as the war’s economic toll has put President Trump under increasing political pressure at home.
“If Iran chooses poorly, then they will have a blockade and bombs dropping on infrastructure, power, and energy,” Mr. Hegseth said. Under international law, intentionally targeting Iran’s civilian infrastructure could constitute a war crime.
Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at the news conference that U.S. Navy forces in the Pacific could be ordered to intercept ships trying to resupply Iran, which would broaden the naval blockade beyond the Middle East.
Iran threatened on Wednesday to halt all trade in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Red Sea in response to the blockade. It was unclear how much control Iran could exert over shipping in the region. Its battered armed forces can still use mines and fast boats to harass ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Wanted: politician capable of appealing to the moderate right, centre and moderate left to beat hard-right populist Jordan Bardella in the run-off of France’s 2027 presidential election. The search began in earnest after last month’s municipal elections, in which the left held on to most big cities while conservatives or the far-right National Rally (RN) hoovered up smaller towns. This year will be a marathon race to select a single candidate to face Bardella, 30, or his patron, Marine Le Pen, 57, in the final round. Le Pen remains ineligible unless an appeals court in July overturns her sentence for embezzlement of EU funds.
All opinion polls give the anti-immigration, Eurosceptic RN a sizeable lead in voting intentions for the first round. Bardella, the party’s smooth-talking but inexperienced leader, is polling as high as 38%. Barring a miracle, he seems sure of a place in the run-off. Il a également recommandé de « libérer le cœur de cette soif de gain qui est une idolâtrie ». Il parlait en présence du président Paul Biya, 93 ans, doyen des chefs d’État dans le monde, au pouvoir depuis 1982 et réélu en octobre dernier à l’issue d’un scrutin contesté et émaillé de manifestations réprimées dans le sang. « La sécurité est une priorité, mais elle doit toujours s’exercer dans le respect des droits de l’Homme », a ajouté le pape.

Mercredi matin, Léon XIV quitte l’Algérie pour le Cameroun, qu’il visitera pendant quatre jours, avant de s’envoler vers l’Angola, puis la Guinée équatoriale, dernière étape de son périple africain. Son retour à Rome est prévu la semaine prochaine, le jeudi 23 avril.
Léon XIV, né à Chicago il y a soixante-dix ans, ancien missionnaire et évêque au Pérou, dont il a pris la nationalité, est le plus africain de tous les papes récents, à deux points de vue. Tant par ses lointaines origines familiales que par son expérience de supérieur religieux des augustins qui a sillonné la planète de long en large, particulièrement le continent africain.
Les racines africaines du 267e pape de l’histoire lui viennent de sa mère, Mildred, qui est issue d’une famille métisse, d’origine créole, de Louisiane. La grand-mère maternelle du pape est née dans l’actuelle Haïti, elle se trouve être une descendante d’esclaves.
