Why Are Westerners Moving to Russia? | BBC News

August 5, 2026 | A group of prominent, controversial influencers made a visit to Russia this summer. They included Andrew Tate, Candace Owens and British far-right anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson.

They argue that Russia is upholding the traditional conservative values they fear are in decline at home. It is certainly an image Vladimir Putin is keen to project.

Two years ago Russia set up a special “shared values” visa, which makes it easier for Westerners to move to the country if they align with its supposed ‘traditional spiritual and moral beliefs’. Russia claims thousands of Westerners have applied.

We speak to the BBC’s Dan Hardoon, whose documentary The Russian Dream follows Westerners who have moved to Russia, and to Russia expert Mark Galeotti, host of the podcast In Moscow's Shadows.

Smoking Marijuana May Be More Harmful to Lungs Than Smoking Cigarettes, Study Finds.

People who smoke marijuana were more likely to have certain types of lung damage than people who smoked cigarettes, according to a new study that reviewed lung scans of smokers. The researchers who led the study say their findings suggest smoking marijuana may be more harmful than people realize.

Smoking marijuana may be more dangerous to health than smoking cigarettes study finds. Lung scans have shown that people who smoke marijuana are more prone to developing emphysema, which is a form of COPD.

All forms of smoking are unhealthy, but some forms, it seems, are unhealthier than others.

In an ideal world, nobody would smoke anything. But this, alas, is far from an ideal world.

I have said all along that I find it absolute madness that western governments are relaxing laws on the smoking of marijuana whilst at the very same time they are waging an unrelenting war on cigarette-smoking and cigarette-smokers. I continue to stand by what I have said all along. Cigarette smoking in moderation, whilst not ideal, is far, far healthier than smoking marijuana or vaping. I feel sure that time will prove me correct.

However, it should be noted that I neither endorse nor promote cigarette smoking. Of course, it is always better not to smoke. I have myself been smoke-free for more than four years. But I am four-square against the war on cigarette-smoking. Adults should be free to decide for themselves whether they wish to smoke, or not. I am a liberal with every fibre of my being: I despise governments interfering in my lifestyle choices. Informing people of the dangers is one thing, and that is usually—but not always*—positive, but banning things is something else altogether. I am very much against such bans. I hate it when governments treat adults like children! — © Mark Alexander

‘You Should Be in Prison’: Ghana MP on Gay People and Allies | BBC News

August 14, 2026 | In May, Ghana’s parliament approved a new bill criminalising homosexuality and the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities.

It proposes that identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer be punished by up to three years' imprisonment.

One of the bill’s co-authors, Emmanuel Bedzrah, spoke to the BBC’s religion editor Aleem Maqbool about it.

Even though it is 2026, the world is falling back into darkness. Particularly, it has to be said in Africa. We don’t call it “Darkest Africa” for nothing! As far as I am concerned, it should be so called because counties like Ghana have not been kissed by the Enlightenment. These people are living in total ignorance!

The Bible doesn’t say anything much that is meaningful about homosexuality. In fact, the Bible says absolutely nothing at all about sexual orientation as a concept as we understand it today. The very word ‘homosexual’ is a word from the ‘modern’ era. The word homosexual was coined by the Austrian-born Hungarian writer and human rights campaigner Karl-Maria Kertbeny on May 6, 1868. [Source of information: Google AI]

Homosexuality as we know it, i.e. two men or two women loving each other and committing to each other hopefully in a lifelong partnership, was totally unknown to people in biblical times, so would have been totally and utterly incomprehensible to them.

So, as the Bible doesn’t touch on the idea of two adults of the same gender being attracted to each other and committing to each other in a consenting, lifelong relationship, it should not be used to justify people’s ignorance, bigotry, and prejudices. — © Mark Alexander

In Iran, the National Security Council suspended strict enforcement imposed upon women because the regime recognised it was fighting a "losing battle”, says Dr Roxane Farmanfarmaian, director of international studies and global politics at Cambridge University.

Victory No Longer Possible for Putin, Dmitry Muratov Tells Steve Rosenberg | BBC News

August 13, 2026 | In an exclusive interview, BBC Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg sits down with Dmitry Muratov, the Nobel Prize-winning Russian journalist.

Muratov co-founded Novaya Gazeta, a newspaper that became the flagship media outlet for independent journalism in Russia. He and his colleagues have faced threats for their work and six of the paper’s journalists were murdered, including Anna Politkovskaya, who investigated human rights abuses in Chechnya.

Soon after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, under pressure from the authorities Novaya Gazeta halted operations and its licence was subsequently revoked.

In the Novaya Gazeta offices that were raided earlier this year by police, Muratov talks to Rosenberg about public perception of Russia’s war on Ukraine, increasing repression inside the country, and the man who has ruled Russia for more than a quarter of a century – Vladimir Putin.

Greenland Forces Trump-linked US Oil Firm to Delay Drilling

THE GUARDIAN US envoy had claimed Americans could be extracting crude by as early as next year

Greenland authorities have forced a US oil company connected to Donald Trump to postpone drilling wells in the Arctic territory, defying claims by the US president’s envoy that Americans could be extracting crude by next year.

Amid Trump’s imperialist threats, tensions have been rising on Greenland’s eastern coast after the oil company brought drilling equipment ashore in July without permission, drawing a “strong warning” from the government.

Just week before Greenland Energy intended to sink its first wells into the tundra, the government said on Thursday: “The necessary regulatory process cannot be completed, and the necessary approvals cannot therefore be obtained before the planned start of drilling.”

It said that during talks Greenlandic officials had expressed concern that the timetable was too tight to assess the environmental and social impact.

The authorities will have to decide whether to sanction drilling in a protected wetland that is home to rare birds and the muskoxen on which local hunters depend. At the earliest, drilling could now commence in the winter of 2027, the government and the company said. » | Tom Burgis | Wednesday, August 12, 2026

Why Americans Are Injecting Themselves with Unregulated ‘Miracle’ Drugs | On the Ground

June 16, 2026 | Across the US, thousands of people are injecting themselves with unregulated peptides in pursuit of weight loss, muscle growth and younger-looking skin.

As blockbuster drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro have transformed the conversation around weight loss and introduced millions of Americans to peptide-based treatments, a growing number of people have begun seeking out cheaper, more experimental alternatives online.

Despite being labelled "not for human consumption", these substances are readily available and have surged in popularity among people disillusioned by traditional healthcare.

To find out why so many Americans are willing to risk unknown side-effects for the promise of a quick fix, Adam Gabbatt meets the users and influencers driving the peptide boom,, and investigates what's really inside some of these so-called "miracle" drugs.

‘She Will Be Sorely Missed’ Emotional Farewell to Ann Widdecombe after Horror Killing

Aug 12, 2026 | Ann Widdecombe’s funeral has taken place at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, where her family, closest friends and political colleagues gathered to say a final goodbye. The private requiem mass was held at the Catholic abbey where the former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman regularly worshipped.

Widdecombe was remembered as a “kind and warm character” and a woman of “profound faith” who dedicated much of her life to public service. Nigel Farage paid an emotional tribute, declaring: “She will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Ann.” Her nephew, the Rev Roger Widdecombe, and close friend Sir Christian Sweeting also paid tribute during the service.

The 78-year-old died following a brutal hammer attack at her Dartmoor home in July 2026. Joshua Kerry, 28, has been charged with her murder and remains in custody awaiting trial. A larger public memorial celebrating Widdecombe’s life will be held later this year. …
