‘You Should Be in Prison’: Ghana MP on Gay People and Allies | BBC News

August 14, 2026 | In May, Ghana’s parliament approved a new bill criminalising homosexuality and the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities.

It proposes that identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer be punished by up to three years' imprisonment.

One of the bill’s co-authors, Emmanuel Bedzrah, spoke to the BBC’s religion editor Aleem Maqbool about it.

Even though it is 2026, the world is falling back into darkness. Particularly, it has to be said in Africa. We don’t call it “Darkest Africa” for nothing! As far as I am concerned, it should be so called because counties like Ghana have not been kissed by the Enlightenment. These people are living in total ignorance!

The Bible doesn’t say anything much that is meaningful about homosexuality. In fact, the Bible says absolutely nothing at all about sexual orientation as a concept as we understand it today. The very word ‘homosexual’ is a word from the ‘modern’ era. The word homosexual was coined by the Austrian-born Hungarian writer and human rights campaigner Karl-Maria Kertbeny on May 6, 1868. Homosexuality as we know it, i.e. two men or two women loving each other and committing to each other hopefully in a lifelong partnership, was totally unknown to people in biblical times, so would have been totally and utterly incomprehensible to them.

So, as the Bible doesn’t touch on the idea of two adults of the same gender being attracted to each other and committing to each other in a consenting, lifelong relationship, it should not be used to justify people’s ignorance, bigotry, and prejudices. — © Mark Alexander
