Angela Merkel Celebrates after German Election

BBC: Angela Merkel has urged her party to celebrate "a super result" after exit polls suggested she was set to win a third term as German chancellor.

Her Christian Democrats took about 42% of the vote, according to exit polls.

But Mrs Merkel's preferred coalition is at risk, as her Free Democrat partners appear not have secured the 5% needed to enter parliament.

She may, therefore, be forced to seek a grand coalition with the Social Democrats - estimated to have won 26%.

Exit polls for ARD public television put the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) on 4.7%, which if confirmed would be a disaster for the junior coalition partner, leaving it with no national representation in parliament.

Senior party member Christian Lindner called it "the bitterest hour". » | Sunday, September 22, 2013

» | A.F. - leJDD.fr | vendredi 20 septembre 2013

Move Over Organic – The New Big Business in Food Is Halal

THE INDEPENDENT: This week's Halal Food Festival is attracting interest among a growing group of foodies beyond the Muslim community

Their culinary buzzword is provenance; they know their Jamie from their Nigella; and they have the spare cash to splash on eating out, if they could only find the right restaurants. The catch is that any meat they eat must be halal, on either religious or taste grounds.

Meet the Haloodies, a growing group of food lovers who are bored of curries, fed up with kebabs, and long for nothing more exotic than a shepherd's pie. Their increasing spending power has sparked a race among retailers, wholesalers and canny restaurateurs to carve out a chunk of a market that is worth about £420bn globally.

This week an estimated 20,000 Haloodies will congregate in east London at the Halal Food Festival, the world's first gastronomic celebration of halal produce. All of the UK's major supermarket chains are sending scouts to help them find ways to exploit the trend. Attendees can browse food stalls offering anything from hot dogs and sushi to French and Moroccan dishes without worrying how the meat was killed or even transported.

Imran Kausar, a doctor by training, who masterminded the festival, said British Muslims were no longer "economic migrants trying to make do [but] affluent and aspirational members of the middle class [who wanted to] expand their culinary horizon." He added: "While typical British dishes have got more exotic, Muslims want the reverse. We want regular stuff like shepherd's pie, which we see everywhere but we can't try." Divided Kingdom: Scots Tout Oil-rich Future, March for Independence

There's now less than a year to go before the Scottish independence vote - and supporters are marking the date with a mass march through the Northern Capital, Edinburgh. But even though time is ticking - it's far from clear which way the vote will swing. Separatists say huge oil reserves will guarantee the country's fortunes, while London says the North and South, are better off together.

Pope Attacks Global Economics for Worshipping 'God of Money'

REUTERS.COM: Pope Francis made one of his strongest attacks on the global economic system on Sunday, saying it could no longer be based on a "god called money" and urged the unemployed to fight for work.

Francis, at the start of a day-long trip to the Sardinian capital, Cagliari, put aside his prepared text at a meeting with unemployed workers, including miners in hard hats who told him of their situation, and improvised for nearly 20 minutes.

"I find suffering here ... It weakens you and robs you of hope," he said. "Excuse me if I use strong words, but where there is no work there is no dignity."

He discarded his prepared speech after listening to Francesco Mattana, a 45-year-old married father of three who lost his job with an alternative energy company four years ago.

Mattana, his voice trembling, told the pope that unemployment "oppresses you and wears you out to the depths of your soul".

The crowd of about 20,000 people in a square near the city port chanted what Francis called a prayer for "work, work, work". They cheered each time he spoke of the rights of workers and the personal devastation caused by joblessness.

The pope, who later celebrated Mass for some 300,000 people outside the city's cathedral, told them: "We don't want this globalised economic system which does us so much harm. Men and women have to be at the centre (of an economic system) as God wants, not money."

"The world has become an idolator of this god called money," he said.

Sardinia's coast is famous for its idyllic beaches, exclusive resorts and seaside palatial residences of some of the world's richest people, including former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and a host of Hollywood actors.

But much of the island, particularly its large cities and the vast agricultural and industrial interior, has been blighted by the economic crisis, with factories closed and mines operating at low capacity. » | Philip Pullella | Cagliari, Sardinia | Edited by Will Waterman | Sunday, September 22, 2013

Syria: 'Bashar al-Assad Ordered Me to Gas People - But I Could Not Do It'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: General Zaher al-Sakat tells Richard Spencer that he was ordered three times to use chemical weapons against his own people in Syria - but he could not go through with it.

Few thought that the Syrian regime's promise to destroy its chemical weapons would be the end of the story. Brigadier-General Zaher al-Sakat, a former chemical weapons chief in President Bashar al-Assad's own army, certainly did not.

Gen Sakat says he was ordered three times to use chemical weapons against his own people, but could not go through with it and replaced chemical canisters with ones containing harmless bleach.

He also insists that all such orders had to come from the top – President Assad himself – despite insistent denials by the regime that it has never used chemical weapons.

Now he also claims to have his own intelligence that the Syrian president is evading the terms of a Russian-brokered deal to destroy his chemical weapons by transferring some of his stocks to his allies – Hizbollah, in Lebanon, and Iran.

Gen Sakat spoke to The Sunday Telegraph last week, his first interview with a western newspaper, as Mr Assad confirmed for the first time what he and much of the rest of the world already knew – that regime possessed a huge arsenal of chemical weapons, and the delivery systems to go along with them. » | Richard Spencer, Amman | Saturday, September 21, 2013

Turkey 'Will Probably Never Be EU Member'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Turkey will probably never become a member of the European Union because of stiff opposition and "prejudiced" attitudes from current members, a senior Turkish minister has admitted.

In the first such admission, Egemen Bagis, minister for European Union affairs, said that his country had to accept that its long cherished goal of joining the EU was likely to end in disappointment.

Turkey would, he said, probably end up with a similar status as Norway in relation to the EU, which is not a member but has access to the single market through free trade agreements.

"In the long run I think Turkey will end up like Norway. We will be at European standards, very closely aligned but not as a member," he said, adding that his prediction would only change unless attitudes changed towards his country, which would be the first Muslim nation to join the bloc.

Mr Begis, who is also Turkey's chief negotiator with the EU, said that despite modernising and growing its economy, his country was the victim of "prejudice" in its treatment by the EU and its defeated Olympic bid. » | Alex Spillius, Yalta | Saturday, September 21, 2013

'Morsi Failed to Govern Democratically, His Case Is Over' - Egypt Foreign Minister

Egypt on the crossroads, again, after deposing the dictator Mubarak, it seemed like the first green shoots of democracy appeared. But just after a year in office, Egypt's first ever democratically-elected leader Mohammed Morsi was removed as well. Now the question is: what's next? We address it to our guest Nabil Fahmy, the minister of foreign affairs of Egypt's interim government.

Ed Miliband: I'm Bringing Socialism Back to Britain

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Ed Miliband has said he is "bringing back socialism" to Britain as he unveiled new plans to strengthen the minimum wage ahead of the Labour Party conference.

Mr Miliband said that David Cameron's government will stand only for the "privileged few" as he promised to deliver an economy that "works for the working people".

He also confirmed his pledge to scrap the spare room subsidy, which he described as a "bedroom tax", and tackle the cost-of-living "crisis".

Unusually for Mr Miliband, he chose not to wear a suit, opting instead for a grey v-neck jumper and jeans. Earlier in the day he took a stroll along Brighton seafront with his wife Justine and his children, Daniel and Samuel.

Mr Miliband said: "We are going to scrap the bedroom tax, that's what I mean by a government that fights for you.

"And we are fighting for all of the low-paid people around our country. One of the proudest achievements of the last Labour government was the national minimum wage, making work pay for people.

"But under David Cameron's Government people are falling behind, the national minimum wage now paying people £20 less after inflation than it did when David Cameron came to office. That's just wrong.

"When we see that happening and when we think about one of the big banks, do we really think they can't afford to pay heir cleaners a bit more?"

It was "wrong" that millions of people "are going out to work unable to afford to bring up their families".

He added: "The Labour government will put it right, we will strengthen the national minimum wage, we will make work pay for the workers of Britain. » | Steven Swinford, Senior Political Correspondent | Saturday, September 21, 2013

DHS Joins Muslim Brotherhood – Sharia Law in the USA

Obama & The Rise of Islam in America 2013. Muslim Brotherhood infiltrate the White House

Another Muslim Brotherhood Member Served in US Administration – Report

THE VOICE OF RUSSIA: Top Muslim Brotherhood official Gehad al-Haddad Muslim Brotherhood, who was arrested in Cairo on Tuesday and charged with inciting violence, had been working at the Clinton Foundation.

Before emerging as Brotherhood spokesman and adviser to Morsi, al-Haddad served for five years as a top official at the Clinton Foundation, a nonprofit group founded by former President Bill Clinton, according to The Washington Free Beacon.

0 Al-Haddad gained a reputation for pushing the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamist agenda in the foreign press, where he was often quoted defending the Brotherhood’s crackdown on civil liberties in Egypt.

0 He was raised in a family of prominent Brotherhood supporters and became the public face of the Islamist organization soon after leaving his post at the Clinton Foundation.

0 However, much of his official work with the Brotherhood took place while he was still claiming to be employed by the Clinton Foundation.

Greece Seized by New Sense of Foreboding as Violence Flares in Streets

THE GUARDIAN: Clashes between far-right Golden Dawn and anti-fascists raise fears that crisis has reached new stage

It was not the scene that Greece's international stewards envisaged when they last visited the country at the epicentre of Europe's financial mess. When representatives of the "troika" of creditors arrived in June, book-keeping in Athens had been problem-free and monitors described their inspection tour as "almost boring". The great Greek debt crisis, it seemed, had finally gone quiet.

But when mission heads representing the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank fly into Athens on Sunday – for the start of a review upon which the future of Greece will hang – what they will find is a country teetering on the edge: its people divided as never before, its mood brittle, its streets the setting for running battles between anti-fascists and neo-Nazis. And unions girding for battle.

After six years of recession, four years of austerity and the biggest financial rescue programme in global history, it is clear that Greeks have moved into another phase, beyond the fear, fatigue and fury engendered by record levels of poverty and unemployment.

Along with the teargas – fired on Monday for the first time in more than a year outside the administrative reform ministry – there is a new sense of foreboding: a belief that they might never be "saved" and, worse still, could turn against each other.

This week's murder of the hip-hop artist Pavlos Fyssas by a member of the far-right Golden Dawn party highlighted that fear. Read on and comment » | Helena Smith in Athens | Friday, September 20, 2013

Inmates Fume at Plans to Ban Smoking in Prison

THE INDEPENDENT: Plan linked to potential legal action by staff and inmates over effects of passive smoking

Locked up for up to 23 hours a day, the few moments of light relief on offer for thousands of inmates residing at Her Majesty’s Pleasure are set to dwindle further. After pubs, trains and public places, the prison estate for England and Wales is set to introduce a smoking ban – sparking warnings from former prisoners about a possible backlash.

Following the lead of Canadian jails and young offender institutions, prisons are set to become smoke-free zones because of concerns of legal action from non-smokers claiming to suffer the effects of passive smoking, according to the prison officers’ union.

Labour said yesterday that the plan to run a pilot at a number of undisclosed sites was an “odd priority” after claiming that inspection reports had warned that prisons were increasingly stretched anyway. The scheme is expected to be launched in the spring of next year and if successful could be rolled out across all prisons within 12 months, according to reports.

However, the scheme was met with opposition by some groups and former inmates who warned of disturbances with the withdrawal of tobacco and replacement with nicotine patches. Around 80 per cent of inmates in England and Wales are believed to smoke. » | Paul Peachey, Crime Correspondent | Friday, September 30, 2013

Saudi Princess Meshael Alayban: US 'Slavery' Case Dropped

BBC: Charges have been dropped against a Saudi princess who was accused of human trafficking after a Kenyan maid said her passport was taken and she was forced to work for meagre pay.

On Friday, prosecutors in the US state of California said they were unable to corroborate the allegations against Meshael Alayban, 42.

Ms Alayban's lawyers said the maid's claims were a scam to remain in the US.

The charges carried a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.

Friday's announcement came during what was originally supposed be Ms Alayban's arraignment.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas told the judge the evidence did not support charges against Ms Alayban and moved to dismiss the case.

Ms Alayban, reportedly one of six wives of a scion of the Saudi royal family, had been free on $5m (£3.1m) bail posted by the Saudi consulate. » | Friday, September 20, 2013

White Muslim Convert Planned to Steal Bodyguard's Gun and Murder Prince Harry for Having 'Blood On His Hands'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A white Muslim convert planned to disarm a royal bodyguard and use the gun to kill Prince Harry in an attack he had named Operation Regal.

Ashraf Islam, 31, formerly known as Mark Townley, confessed to police he had "advanced plans" to kill the Prince the day after he was arrested in May.

Belfast-born Islam was held the day after Drummer Lee Rigby was murdered in Woolwich, and said the fourth in line to the throne “had blood on his hands” after two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

He spent 10 days in Thailand building up his fitness, carrying out research on the internet and refining his plans, before flying to London to carry out the attack.

But he began to feel “scared and nervous” and walked into Hounslow police station in west London, where he confessed the murder plot.

He pleaded guilty to one count of making a threat to kill when he appeared before magistrates on May 25, two days after giving himself up. » | Gordon Raynor, Chief Reporter | Friday, September 20, 2013

Non-Muslim Teachers ‘Forced to Wear Veil’ at Faith School

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Female teachers at a state funded Muslim school have been ordered to cover their heads with Islamic scarves during school hours even if they are not Muslim, it has been claimed.

Staff at Al-Madinah School, in Derbyshire, say that they have been told to sign new contracts agreeing to wear hijabs and make girls sit at the back of classes.

The Muslim faith school, which caters for 200 students aged four to 16, also forbids the teachers from bringing in non-Halal food or wearing unacceptable jewellery, it is claimed.

Non-Asian staff have been seen removing the headgear immediately when leaving the building, but refused to reveal the extent of the school's demands.

Nick Raine, regional NUT officer, said: "We are very worried about the school and the education of the 200 children there.

"It's one thing to have a dress code which we can challenge and quite another to build it into a contract.

Health Scare Sparks King 'Abdication' Rumours

THE LOCAL (SPAIN): Spain's Royal Palace announced on Friday King Juan Carlos will have hip surgery, but not before the rumour started circulating that the 75-year-old monarch was about to abdicate because of ill health.

The health of Spain's monarch was the subject of much debate in Friday, the Spanish edition of the Huffington Post reported.

Early in the day, the palace had scheduled a news conference for 6pm to give details on the status of the King's health.

In the intervening period, the country's El Confidencial reported the King would soon be travelling to the United States for specialist advice regarding pain in his left hip.

That story was also reported by Catalonia's La Vanguardia newspaper while the news site Vox Populi said the King would have surgery in the US, but not for an operation on his hip.

Alongside the media speculation, Twitter messages flew about hinting at a possible abdication of the Spanish Head of State.

"There's a rumour that the Royal Family will announce the abdication of King Juan Carlos at 6pm. If it's true we will have to thank him for his great service to Spain," tweeted Juan Gomez. » | The Local/AFP | Friday, September 20, 2013

Netanjahu wirft Iran "Medienkampagne" vor

Neo-Nazi Murder: Greeks Protest Rise of the Far-Right

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: The alleged murder of a leftist rapper by a neo-Nazi has shocked Greece, where thousands have taken to the streets to protest the rise of the far-right Golden Dawn party. Athens says it is determined to take action.

As Pavlos Fyssas was laid to rest in Athens on Thursday morning, thousands of Greeks took to the streets to pay their respects to the anti-fascist rapper and demonstrate against the escalating violence engulfing the country.

When he was stabbed to death early on Wednesday, the 34-year-old became the most prominent victim of a wave of right-wing extremism that, if left unchecked, some fear may degenerate into generalized instability as social tensions rise on the back of the country's economic crisis.

A 45-year-old man, Giorgos Roupakias, has been arrested for the crime and, according to police, has confessed to both the murder and his ties to the far-right Golden Dawn, which has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and is now Greece's third most popular political party. » | Georgios Christidis in Thessaloniki | Thursday, September 19, 2013

Tone Change: After Decades of Harsh Rhetoric, US - Iran Relations Thaw

Iran's recently elected President has offered to oversee talks between the Syrian government and the opposition. Hassan Rouhani addressed the Western world in an editorial for the Washington Post - calling on countries to focus on the future and not past frosty relations. The apparent readiness of Iran's new leader to engage, has given hope for a thaw in relations with Washington - but that's not an easy goal to achieve. Sex Jihad Raging in Syria, Claims Minister

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A Tunisian minister has revealed local women are travelling to Syria to undertake 'sex jihad' by giving battlefield comfort to Islamist fighters battling the regime.

Tunisian women have travelled to Syria to wage "sex jihad" by comforting Islamist fighters battling the regime there, Interior Minister Lotfi ben Jeddou has told MPs.

"They have sexual relations with 20, 30, 100" militants, the minister told members of the National Constituent Assembly on Thursday.

"After the sexual liaisons they have there in the name of 'jihad al-nikah' - (sexual holy war, in Arabic) - they come home pregnant," Ben Jeddou told the MPs.

He did not elaborate on how many Tunisian women had returned to the country pregnant with the children of jihadist fighters.

Jihad al-nikah, permitting extramarital sexual relations with multiple partners, is considered by some hardline Sunni Muslim Salafists as a legitimate form of holy war. » | AFP | Friday, September 20, 2013

» | Agence France-Presse | Washington | jeudi 19 septembre 2013

Senator John McCain: Russians Deserve Better Than Putin

PRAVDA: When Pravda.ru editor, Dmitry Sudakov, offered to publish my commentary, he referred to me as "an active anti-Russian politician for many years." I'm sure that isn't the first time Russians have heard me characterized as their antagonist. Since my purpose here is to dispel falsehoods used by Russia's rulers to perpetuate their power and excuse their corruption, let me begin with that untruth. I am not anti-Russian. I am pro-Russian, more pro-Russian than the regime that misrules you today.

I make that claim because I respect your dignity and your right to self-determination. I believe you should live according to the dictates of your conscience, not your government. I believe you deserve the opportunity to improve your lives in an economy that is built to last and benefits the many, not just the powerful few. You should be governed by a rule of law that is clear, consistently and impartially enforced and just. I make that claim because I believe the Russian people, no less than Americans, are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

A Russian citizen could not publish a testament like the one I just offered. President Putin and his associates do not believe in these values. They don't respect your dignity or accept your authority over them. They punish dissent and imprison opponents. They rig your elections. They control your media. They harass, threaten, and banish organizations that defend your right to self-governance. To perpetuate their power they foster rampant corruption in your courts and your economy and terrorize and even assassinate journalists who try to expose their corruption.

They write laws to codify bigotry against people whose sexual orientation they condemn. They throw the members of a punk rock band in jail for the crime of being provocative and vulgar and for having the audacity to protest President Putin's rule. Gaddafi Trial -- Like Father, Like Son?

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libya's deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi, is set to go on trial in Tripoli today. Libya's new authorities insist that it will be fair and not a 'Mickey Mouse' trial, all the while refusing to extradite Saif to face charges in the International Criminal Court (ICC). Can he really expect justice and a fate different from his father's in a country that is on the brink of anarchy? And does the international community have the political will to enforce justice in what is increasingly perceived to be its toothless paper tiger? John Jones, Saif al-Islam's lawyer in the ICC, joins Oksana to mull over these issues.

Pope Francis: Catholic Church Could Fall Like a 'House of Cards'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Pope Francis has declared himself a "sinner" and says the Catholic Church will “fall like a house of cards” unless its leaders are able to strike a “new balance” between their political activities and their spiritual mission.

In an unprecedented 10,000 word interview the Argentinian Pope, who has established a reputation for directness and humility since being elected six months ago, called on his church to reform and alluded that it had become obsessed with issues such as gay marriage, abortion and contraception.

And in another characteristically startling admission he declared himself a sinner.

"This is the most accurate definition,” he said, when asked what sort of a man he was. “It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner.”

Pope Franics revealed he prays while waiting for a dentist’s appointment and that he decided not to move into the grand apostolic apartments in the Vatican, where his predecessor Benedict XVI lived, because he would have felt trapped and out of touch.

Of the Catholic Church overall, he said: “We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards.” » | Nick Squires, in Rome | Thursday, September 19, 2013

Merkel's Ukip Warning to German Voters

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Angela Merkel’s conservatives issued a strong warning to German voters not to support a fast-rising eurosceptic party in Sunday’s election, highlighting the growing popularity of Ukip in Britain as an example not to be followed.

The Chancellor’s Christian Democrats (CDU), which had deliberately ignored the small Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD) so far in the campaign, deployed one of their most respected figures to rip into the new party.

Wolfgang Schaeuble, the veteran finance minister, said anti-European Union sentiment threatened the region’s progress.

“These people claim: 'We’d be better off economically without the euro’,” he told the weekly Die Zeit. “That claim is totally wrong, has no credibility and is extremely dangerous for our prosperity.”

Referring to Ukip, whose rise has been well noted in Germany, he continued: “In the UK there is a political movement with a high degree of euroscepticism. In France, many fear that at the European elections the National Front will be the strongest party. I am thankful that we in Germany, perhaps because of our history, are a little cautious of demagoguery and right-leaning ideas.”

Mr Schäuble added: “I don’t have any time for these people who seem to be trapped in the past. Anyone who starts, like the AfD, with stoking fears towards Europe, quickly moves towards stoking fears of immigrants.” » | Jeevan Vasagar in Berlin | Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Public Masturbation Not a Crime: Swedish Court

THE LOCAL: A man who openly masturbated on a Stockholm beach has been acquitted of sexual assault in court after it was ruled he was not targeting a specific person, with the prosecutor saying it's "okay" to play with yourself in public.

The incident occurred on June 6th at the Drevviken beach when the man removed his shorts and began masturbating close to the water. He was subsequently charged with sexual assault.

The Södertörn District Court has now acquitted the 65-year old in a judgement which stated that it "may be proven that the man exposed himself and masturbated on this occasion".

However, the court added that no offence had been committed as the masturbating man was not pleasuring himself towards a specific person. » | The Local/pr | Thursday, September 12, 2013

The Intolerant Continent: Europe’s Shocking Attitude Creating a Climate of Fear for Gay People

THE INDEPENDENT: Amnesty International report says governments are ignoring violence and discrimination

Gay, lesbian and transgender people face shocking levels of violence, discrimination and abuse across Europe, with gaps in EU and national legislation robbing them of justice and creating a climate of fear, a new report by Amnesty International says.

This summer, people hurled eggs at participants at a gay pride rally in Lithuania, which is currently chair of the rotating European Union presidency. At the first gay pride rally staged in Montenegro, an EU candidate state, dozens were injured as homophobic protesters threw rocks and bottles.

Amnesty’s report detailed cases of people killed, savagely beaten and doused in petrol because of their sexuality, with many victims struggling to get justice or support from police and judicial authorities ill-equipped to deal with homophobic violence.

“Lack of legislation has a fundamental impact on how these crimes are dealt with by state authorities,” said Marco Perolini, Amnesty’s expert on discrimination in Europe and Central Asia.

EU legislation from 2008 states that attacks motivated by racism and xenophobia constitute hate crimes. Attacks carried out because of someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity do not come under that banner, the Amnesty report notes. » | Charlotte McDonald-Gibson | Brussels | Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Selfridges Faces Backlash After Giving EDL Leader Tommy Robinson Free Steak Lunch

THE INDEPENDENT: Calls to boycott the store have been made again after a sales assistant refused to serve Robinson's friend

Department store Selfridges has courted controversy again after giving leader of the English defence [sic] League Tommy Robinson a free steak to apologise after a member of staff refused to serve them.

The menswear employee was temporarily suspended for violating company policy after refusing to serve Robinson's friend. Robinson, a convicted criminal who leads anti-Islam protests across the country, was in the Oxford Street store with his friend who was looking to purchase a pair of jeans.

Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, filmed himself challenging the shop assistant who reportedly refused to help Robinson's friend, saying "f**k off, I am not serving you" after asking if he was with the EDL leader.

Robinson said he assumed the shop assistant was a Muslim as he "had Mo on his name tag".

A spokesman said anyone was welcome to shop in the store “ regardless of political opinion”.

To apologise, Selfridges gave Robinson and his friend a three course meal at the store's in-house Hix Restaurant, Champagne and Caviar Bar, which included a prawn cocktail starter, steak and chips, finished off by chocolate cake and ice cream.

The complimentary meal, which Robinson described as "decent" on Twitter, was worth £83. » | Heather Saul | Thursday, September 19, 2013

Settling Scores: Gaddafi's Son Faces Trial in Libya, Fair Hearing Doubtful

The son of the late Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi will stand trial today on charges of killings, allegedly committed during the country's 2011 civil war. The hearings are taking place in Tripoli as Libya has defied numerous requests from the International Criminal Court to hand Saif Al-Islam over to The Hague. The authorities insist they will ensure a fair trail but as RT's Paula Slier reports, many doubt that promise.
