Six German Women Investigated over Auschwitz Crimes
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Six women who were guards at the Auschwitz death camp are being investigated on suspicion of complicity in mass murder, German authorities confirmed on Friday.
The women are among 50 former Auschwitz guards still living in Germany whose cases are being examined by the country's Central Office for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes.
Thomas Will, an investigator at the Central Office, confirmed that the women were under investigation for allegedly aiding and abetting murder. The women are now in their 90s, Mr Will said. The female guards were assigned to women's barracks.
Earlier this year, German authorities launched a fresh attempt to bring surviving perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice, which has so far resulted in the arrest of alleged Auschwitz guard Hans Lipschis, 93.
Lipschis, who was arrested in Aalen, southern Germany, claims he was only a cook.
The renewed push follows the conviction in 2011 of John Demjanjuk, a guard at Sobibor death camp. » | Jeevan Vasagar, Berlin | Friday, August 09, 2013

Wiesenthal Centre Calls for Boycott of Hitler Wine
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: The Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Center has called for a global boycott of an Italian company that sells wines featuring images of Adolf Hitler and Nazi slogans on its labels.
"The Wiesenthal Center denounces the marketing of these products and urges wine distributors in Italy and around the world to send the only message the owner of this firm might understand that they choose not to do any business with someone using the Nazi mass murderer as a blatant marketing tool," said Rabbis Marvin Hier, dean and founder, and Abraham Cooper, associate dean, in a statement.
"Enough is enough."
The statement from the Los Angeles-based human rights group was released after a Norwegian couple visiting the coastal town of Rimini this week said they were shocked to discover controversial wines produced by Vina Lunardelli in the country's north-east. » | Josephine McKenna, Rome | Sunday, August 11, 2013

Gibraltar: Spain Considers Joint Diplomatic Offensive with Argentina over Falkland Islands
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Spain is considering forging an anti-British alliance with Argentina, adopting its strategy over the Falklands Islands, as the diplomatic row over Gibraltar intensifies
Spanish foreign minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo will use a trip to Buenos Aires next month to raise the possibility of forging a joint diplomatic offensive with the South American country over the disputed territories, sources told Spain's El Pais newspaper.
Spain's foreign ministry was also discussing whether to take its complaints over Gibraltar to the United Nations, the newspaper reported on Sunday.
The sources did not specify whether Spain would ask the UN to back a request for Britain to give up sovereignty or just adhere to certain agreements.
It could take its petition to the Security Council or take up the matter with the UN General Assembly.
Spain is also considering the option of denouncing Gibraltar to the International Court of Justice in the Hague for its "illegal occupation" of the isthmus - the strip of land connecting the peninsula to the mainland that was not included in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. » | Fiona Govan, Madrid | Sunday, August 11, 2013

Sarah Ferguson Flies In from the Cold as Queen Invites Her to Stay
THE SUNDAY EXPRESS: The Duchess of York is spending the weekend with the Queen at Balmoral after being accepted back into the fold.
In an extraordinary comeback for the once-disgraced former wife of Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson is staying at the castle as if she was still part of the Royal Family.
Andrew, Sarah and daughters Beatrice and Eugenie flew to Aberdeen on Friday, hours after celebrating Beatrice’s 25th birthday at home in Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park.
It is not the first time the Duchess has stayed at the Queen’s estate since her 1996 divorce – she was there in 2005 and 2008.
However, a royal insider revealed that on those occasions Sarah wasn’t invited to stay in the main castle, unlike this time.
One Balmoral source said: “It’s just like old times. The Duchess is being treated as if she and the Duke were still married.”
Although the Queen has always had a soft spot for her former daughter-in-law, Prince Philip described her as “odd” and “pointless”.
The Sunday Express understands that Prince Andrew was allowed to take his ex-wife to Balmoral only on condition that she leaves before Philip arrives tomorrow. » | Camilla Tominey | Sunday, August 11, 2013

Gay Muslims in Turkey: Torn between Religion and Sexuality
Ertugrul, who did not want to give his last name, is president of the group Muslims and Gays, which he says wants to “break taboos” in Muslim-majority Turkey, where gays are still subject to violence and abuse.
“There are still regions where people kill gays and lesbians to keep the honour of the family intact,” he said.
“For religious clerics, homosexuality is a test. If you succumb to temptation, you will go to hell. If you resist, you will be pardoned and go to heaven,” explained the 39-year-old, a practising Muslim.
Homosexuality and transsexuality are not illegal in Turkey but police regularly swoop — with or without authorisation — on parks, bars or hammams they believe gays frequent to check for prostitution.
People are then taken to police stations where officers check their identities and if they have a criminal record.
Critics say the checks are a way of putting pressure on the gay community. » | AFP | Saturday, August 10, 2013

Mike Huckabee: Muslims Depart Mosques Like 'Uncorked Animals,' Throwing Rocks, Burning Cars
Speaking on his radio program on Monday, Huckabee prefaced his remarks by saying that he understood it was "politically incorrect" to "say anything unkind about Islam." He then went on to suggest that Islamic teachings were to blame for recent unrest during the holy month of Ramadan.
"Can someone explain to me why it is that we tiptoe around a religion that promotes the most murderous mayhem on the planet in their so-called ‘holiest days,’" Huckabee said. "You know, if you’ve kept up with the Middle East, you know that the most likely time to have an uprising of rock throwing and rioting comes on the day of prayer on Friday. So the Muslims will go to the mosque, and they will have their day of prayer, and they come out of there like uncorked animals -- throwing rocks and burning cars." » | Nick Wing | The Huffington Post | Thursday, August 08, 2013

Matt Damon: 'Barack Obama Broke Up with Me
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Matt Damon, once one of President Barack Obama's staunchest Hollywood cheerleaders, has blamed the US leader for the souring of their relationship, saying: 'He broke up with me.
The movie star added that the pair "no longer see eye to eye," and that Mr Obama has "some explaining to do," particularly on the issues of drone strikes and fugitive National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.
The comments were the latest in a series of swipes from the "Bourne Identity" star which have highlighted an undercurrent of disillusionment with the president among some of his more liberal backers in the entertainment industry.
Damon, in an interview with Black Entertainment Television, was asked how he felt Mr Obama was doing in his second term, and replied: "He broke up with me. There are a lot of things that I really question. The legality of the drone strikes, these NSA revelations, are like, you know... Jimmy Carter came out and said we don’t live in a democracy. That’s a little intense when an ex-president says that.
"So, you know, he’s got some explaining to do, particularly for a constitutional law professor.”
The campaigning actor's criticism of Mr Obama began in his first term when Damon said that "a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done" might have been preferable. » | Nick Allen, Los Angeles | Saturday, August 10, 2013

Viewpoint: This Ramadan We've Shown Islam and Britishness Are Not Incompatible
This week British Muslims and Muslims across the world celebrated Eid al-Fitr. After a month of fasting, prayer and reflection there was a time to celebrate and enjoy family meals. Ramadan has been tough this year – not just because of the long, hot summer days, but because of the recent string of attacks on Muslim communities and the shadow of the terrible events of Woolwich in May.
Since the horrific murder of soldier Lee Rigby on the streets of London, we have seen bombs set off at mosques, a school targeted by arsonists, and a Somali community centre razed to the ground. A month earlier we saw the terrible murder of 82-year-old Mohammed Saleem in Birmingham, a horrific crime for which a man has been charged and which police are treating as an act of terrorism.
The reaction to these attacks among the British Muslim community was striking. Their response wasn't to retreat; it was to reach out. This Ramadan, hundreds of community iftars (evening meals, when the fast is broken) have been held across the country. They have united people of all faiths and none, many of whom have never been in a mosque before, breaking bread in order to break down barriers. Many of these were part of the Big Iftar, which culminated with the prime minister's visit to the Jamia Masjid in Manchester on Wednesday. » | Sayeeda Warsi | Sarurday, August 10, 2013

Danish Muslim Leader Who Fuelled Uproar about Prophet Muhammad Cartoons Now Says He Was Wrong and Paper Was Right to Print Images
MAIL ONLINE: Ahmad Akkari led protests against drawings to Lebanon, Egypt and Syria / Dispute over caricatures of Prophet Muhammad became international crisis / Lebanon-born Muslim leader, 35, now says the trip was 'wrong'
He was one of the most vocal critics of Danish newspaper caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that sparked violent fury throughout the Muslim world.
But seven years on Muslim leader Ahmad Akkari has had an unexpected change of heart, declaring his decision to travel to Lebanon, Egypt and Syria to garner support for the ensuing protest was 'totally wrong'.
Lebanon-born Akkari, now 35, was the spokesman for a group of imams who led the outcry against the satirical drawings, and their tour helped to turn the dispute into an international crisis.
He now says the Jyllands-Posten newspaper had the right to print the cartoons.
His about-face has received praise from pundits and politicians in recent weeks, though some question his sincerity. It has also disappointed some in the country's Muslim minority who were deeply offended by the cartoons.
Dozens were killed in weeks of protests over the drawings that included violent attacks against Danish missions in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and Lebanon.
Tiny Denmark found itself on a collision course with the Muslim world — something Akkari now regrets. 'I want to be clear today about the trip: It was totally wrong,' Akkari told The Associated Press this week. » | Kerry McDermott | Saturday, August 10, 2013

Barack Obama Pledges Greater Surveillance Transparency
BBC: President Barack Obama has promised "appropriate reforms" to guarantee greater oversight of controversial US surveillance programmes
At a White House news conference, he proposed "safeguards against abuse", including amending legislation on the collection of telephone data.
Mr Obama also urged appointing a lawyer to challenge the government at the nation's secretive surveillance court.
He has been defending the programmes since they were leaked in June.

Mr Obama said on Friday that the US "can and must be more transparent" about its snooping on phone and internet data.
"Given the history of abuse by governments, it's right to ask questions about surveillance, particularly as technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives," he told reporters.
"It's not enough for me as president to have confidence in these programmes," Mr Obama added. "The American people need to have confidence as well." (+ video) » | Saturday, August 10, 2013

Millions Face Higher Bills under Plans for Compulsory Water Meters
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Millions of families face higher bills under proposals to fit homes with compulsory water meters, after ministers ruled that reservoirs are at risk of running dry
Water companies across a third of the country will be required to consider fitting all properties in their areas with a water meter and billing customers for every drop they use.
Under the order, approved this week by Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, some family water bills could double.
It follows warnings from the Government’s environment specialists that climate change and England’s growing population will put the future supply of water in reservoirs and rivers under “serious stress”.
Householders are already suffering higher water bills, especially in parts of the country at risk of drought. In some parts of southern England where meters are fitted, annual bills have increased by hundreds of pounds.
Ministers have ordered nine of the 24 regional water companies in England and Wales to consider compulsory metering in all the homes they serve. Read on and comment » | Tim Ross, Political Correspondent | Friday, August 09, 2013

Switzerland Apologises to Oprah Winfrey over Handbag Incident
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Switzerland's national tourism office has apologised to Oprah Winfrey over an incident involving a handbag
The media mogul, who is one of the world's richest women, told the US TV programme "Entertainment Tonight" that a shop assistant in Zurich refused to show her a handbag because it was "too expensive" for her.
Forbes magazine estimates that Winfrey earned $77 million in the year ending in June.
A spokeswoman for the Swiss tourism office, Daniela Baer, told The Associated Press on Friday "we are very sorry for what happened to her".
The tourism office also posted an apology on Twitter, saying "this person acted terribly wrong".
Winfrey told fellow US talk show host Larry King on internet channel ora.tv: "I'm in a store, a name-brand store. I'm by myself, absolutely nobody else with me. And I say to the woman, 'I would like to see that bag on the shelf'.
"And she says, 'No, that one's too expensive. I'll show you this one'," said Winfrey.
Trudie Goetz, head of the Swiss luxury chain Trois Pommes, denied her saleswoman had ever sought to stop Winfrey buying the bag.
"Everyone wants to sell a crocodile bag," Goetz told AFP. "It's a misunderstanding," she said, adding that the saleswoman always put the customer first and tried to be "too kind". » | Agencies | Friday, August 09, 2013

Zanzibar Acid Attack: Finger Pointed at Radical Islamic Group as Five Questioned over Assault on British Teenager
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Five men are being questioned by police over the acid attack on two British charity volunteers in Zanzibar as suspicion grew that a radical Islamic group may have inspired the assault
Religious leaders on the Indian Ocean island believe the two men who threw acid over teenagers Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee may be followers of Uamsho, which wants Zanzibar to become independent of mainland Tanzania and impose stricter Muslim rules.
In the past year there have been attacks on Muslim and Catholic leaders on the island, including an acid attack and a fatal shooting. All of the men were detained late on Thursday and in the early hours of Friday in Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar.
The two women, both aged 18 and from north London, were expected back in the UK at lunchtime today after being evacuated from Tanzania on a specially-chartered private medical evacuation flight.
“There are five people we have, all men, who we are interrogating over this matter this morning,” said Mkadam Khamis, regional police commissioner in Zanzibar. » | Mike Pflanz, Stone Town, Zanzibar, Gordon Rayner and Victoria Ward | Friday, August 09, 2013

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's Lawyer Calls for UK Intervention over Execution Fears
THE GUARDIAN: William Hague criticised by UK barrister for failing to back ICC ruling ordering Libya to hand over dictator's son to Hague court
The British lawyer representing Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has called on the UK to intervene on his client's behalf amid fears that the son of the former Libyan dictator will be sentenced to death in a trial expected later in August.
In a letter to the foreign secretary, John Jones QC urged the government to condemn Libya's refusal to hand over his client to the international criminal court to face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Oprah Winfrey 'Victim Of Racism' In Swiss Shop
YAHOO!: Oprah Winfrey has said she recently became a victim of racism when a shop assistant in Switzerland refused to show her a £24,477 handbag saying it would be "too expensive" for her.
The US chat show host, who is one of the richest women in the world, was in Zurich for Tina Turner’s wedding when she decided to go shopping alone.
Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight: "I was in Zurich the other day, in a store whose name I will not mention. I didn't have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear. I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals. But obviously The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Zurich.
"I go into a store and I say to the woman, 'Excuse me, may I see the bag right above your head?' and she says to me, 'No. It's too expensive.'"
The bag was apparently in the shop window behind a security wall.
When Winfrey insisted again, the woman replied: "No, no you don’t want to see that one, you want to see this one because that one will cost too much. You will not be able to afford that."
The assistant then started to show the media owner smaller bags before she asked for a third time and was refused again.
"She said, 'Oh I don’t want to hurt your feelings' and I said, 'Ok thank you so much you’re probably right I can’t afford it.'" said the 59-year-old.
Winfrey, who is the world's only African-American billionaire, then walked out of the shop calmly. » | Sky News | Friday, August 09, 2013

David Cameron on Jesus, Pancakes and Sunday Mornings
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: David Cameron has described his faith as "not a bad handbook" for life but admitted he is unwilling to follow the example of Jesus to give all his possessions to the poor.
For a man who lives in No. 10 Downing Street, has two multi-million pound homes and an upbringing steeped in privilege, it was the one question which stopped him in his tracks.
"What would your response to Jesus be on his instruction to us to sell all our possessions and give the proceeds to the poor," David Cameron was asked during a question-and-answer session in Darwen near Blackburn.
Mr Cameron, who once likened his faith to the patchy reception of Magic FM in the Chilterns, found himself straying into territory which his predecessors have avoided at all costs: God.
The Prime Minister disclosed that he thinks the bible is "not a bad handbook" for life but admitted it would be "a little bit more difficult" to follow the scriptures to the letter and surrender his belongings.
He said: "I'm a Christian and I'm an active member of the Church of England, and like all Christians I think I sometimes struggle with some of the sayings and some of the instructions. » | Steven Swinford and Peter Dominiczak | Thursday, August 08, 2013

UK Has Biggest Population Boom in Europe as Half a Million Migrants Enter in One Year
The UK's population grew to 63.7 million, with the highest birth rate since 1972 contributing to the rise.
Migration from overseas accounted for 517,800 of the population flow into the UK while 352,100 people left the country, putting net migration at 165,600 for the year.
Many of the migrants to the UK are from China, India, Germany, USA, Pakistan, Poland and Australia.
The overall population growth was 419,900, with 254,400 more births than deaths pushing the UK to becoming the third largest EU nation behind Germany and France.
Ukip leader Nigel Farage said the figures showed the failure of the Government "to get a grip on immigration into this country".
He said: "The results of this increase in population can be felt in communities up and down the country as public services struggle to cope with the increase in demand.
"At the same time we face cuts to front line services and send billions of pounds abroad in foreign aid.
"And this is before Romanian and Bulgarian citizens have full access to the UK come January next year. » | Owen Bennett | Thursday, August 08, 2013
Europe: Ramadan Wrap-Up, 2013
Muslims across Europe are marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month which, in accordance with the lunar calendar, this year fell between July and August.
Ramadan was a major topic for public discussion, and the month-long holiday received heavy press coverage from print and broadcast media in all parts of Europe -- a reflection of the rising influence of Islam across the continent.
Muslim leaders sought to leverage the media attention to showcase Ramadan -- a time when Muslims refrain from taking food or water between sunrise and sunset -- as the peaceful nature of Islam in Europe.
Muslims were supported by European multiculturalists – who, when it comes to Judaism and Christianity, are staunch enforcers of secularism. They made great efforts to draw up guidelines, issue instructions and carve out special privileges to ensure that Muslims were not offended by non-Muslims during the festival.
As in past years, Ramadan-related controversies also fuelled heated debates in many countries.
In Britain, for example, Channel 4 became the first mainstream British television channel to broadcast the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) live each morning during Ramadan (see video here). Channel 4 also broadcast a series of programs about Ramadan called "Ramadan Diaries" which explored how British Muslims "cope with the physical and spiritual effects of fasting."
Channel 4 said the special Ramadan programming was an act of "deliberate provocation" to anyone who associates Islam with extremism. » | Soeren Kern | Thursday, August 08, 2013

Cold War Thinking? 'Obama's Reaction on Snowden Asylum Infantile'
Smoking in Jersey Homes Could Be Banned
The move to extend the smoking ban has been suggested as a way of protecting children from secondary cigarette smoke.
Lighting up in parks, shopping areas and beaches could also be banned under the proposals, suggested in a report.
A public consultation on the possible changes to smoking policies is due to run until 31 October.
A department spokesman said smoking was "one of the biggest causes of premature death and ill health in the island".
About 20% of the population smoke and health officials have blamed this high level of smoking for the higher than average rates of some cancers in the island. » | Monday, August 05, 2013

Queen Victoria's Last Love (2012)
MAIL ONLINE: Victoria's secret crush: How Queen fell under the spell of Indian servant after death of ghillie companion John Brown: Just imagine. It’s the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year, the eyes of the world are on London... and the Prince of Wales threatens to have his mother declared insane. ¶ Unthinkable? Well, that’s what happened to Queen Victoria in 1897 after her Royal Household refused to condone any longer Her Majesty’s shockingly intimate friendship with an Indian servant. ¶ It was a relationship that violated Victorian taboos of race and class, and threatened to destabilise the monarchy and the Empire – yet, although Queen Victoria’s earlier scandalous relationship with her Scottish ghillie [an outdoor servant] John Brown is still common knowledge today, her deep affection for her Muslim servant has been almost forgotten. ¶ A new Channel 4 documentary, Queen Victoria’s Last Love, rediscovers how, as courtiers plotted to depose the royal favourite, the nation’s Jubilee celebrations teetered on the brink of chaos. » | Mary Greene | Friday, April 20, 2012

Obama Cancels Visit to Putin as Snowden Adds to Tensions
The move is also a reflection of growing tensions between the two countries on a series of other issues, including Mr. Putin’s continuing support of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.
In a statement, the White House said the president had decided to postpone the summit between the two leaders after concluding that there had not been enough progress made on the “bilateral agenda” to make a meeting worthwhile. “Given our lack of progress on issues such as missile defense and arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security issues, and human rights and civil society in the last twelve months, we have informed the Russian government that we believe it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda,” Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said in a statement. Mr. Carney said Russia’s “disappointing decision” to grant temporary asylum to Mr. Snowden was “also a factor” in Mr. Obama’s decision. » | Michael D. Shear | Wednesday, August 07, 2013
How Islam Conquers Europe
Europe, in denial, afraid to face the truth about the Islamist threat, has taken the coward's way out and stuck its head firmly in the sand. Even as the radical Islamist networks threatening to take over Europe entrench themselves in the violent enclaves within the swelling Islamic communities in the cities, the EU's politicians, with their elastic sense of morality and double-jointed value system, outdo themselves in attempts to reassure their constituents, and defang the Islamist terrorism about to explode in their back yards.
In light of Hezbollah's participation in the slaughter in Syria and of the terrorist attacks it has carried out in the thirty years of its existence, the leaders of the EU had no choice but to designate its "military wing" as a terrorist organization and take measures against it, but somehow managed to leave its so-called "political wing" untouched.
However, before the EU could designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization, a sop had to be thrown to the various Islamist terrorist organizations: an anti-Israeli decision. In a particularly pathetic move intended to provide "balance" for designating Hezbollah's military wing a terrorist organization -- and hoping to stave off the Islamist terrorism threatening Europe, if only temporarily -- the EU issued a condemnation of the Jewish settlements in the occupied territories and announced that their products would be boycotted.
The truth is that the EU's condemnation of the Israeli settlements is sinful, because it is impossible to distinguish between the various Israeli groups. The Jews who live in occupied Palestine and the Jews who live in the occupied West Bank are all Jewish Zionist invaders who settled on Arab lands on the grounds that the Bible granted them the right to the land, while the Palestinians have no right to the Holy Land which gave birth to Jesus, the first Palestinian Messiah. I do not hate the Jews, but by distinguishing between the two parts of the Blessed Land, the EU legitimized the Jewish settlers who have been living in occupied Palestine since 1948. As the Arabic proverb says, "He who came to put kohl on the eyes of the lady instead caused her to go blind."
It is obvious that all the EU's slippery maneuvering and rhetoric have only one objective: to fool the radical Islamists and appease them, in that way hoping to gain quiet, for the time being, and postpone the eventual outbreak of Islamist violence. The Islamists, however, refuse to be manipulated by such semantics. Hezbollah spokesmen had an immediate aggressive response to the EU announcement, calling it surrender to the dictates of the Americans and the Zionist lobby, and a hostile action, which serves only the Jews. » | Ali Salim | Wednesday, August 07, 2013
