» | Beat Bumbacher | Donnerstag, 8. Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96.

Prince Charles, 73, heir to the throne since the age of three, is now king, and will be officially proclaimed so at St James’s Palace in London as soon as practicably possible.

As Queen of the UK and 14 other realms, and head of the 54-nation Commonwealth, Elizabeth II was easily the world’s most recognisable head of state during an extraordinarily long reign. » | Carolin Davies | Thursday, September 8, 2022

» | Niklaus Nuspliger, London | Donnerstag, 8. Liz Truss to Freeze Energy Bills at £2,500 a Year Average, Funded by Borrowing

THE GUARDIAN: PM announces £150bn scheme and resumption of fracking as she pledges to tackle root causes of crisis

Liz Truss will freeze energy bills at an average of £2,500 a year for two years from 1 October, and has pledged to tackle the root causes of the problems in the UK energy market through plans to increase supply, including the resumption of fracking.

The government will fund the scheme to reduce the unit cost of energy through increased borrowing. The cost is likely to be about £150bn, although Whitehall sources said estimates would not come until a fiscal statement from the chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, expected later this month.

The so-called energy price guarantee will limit the price suppliers can charge customers for units of gas. Truss will temporarily remove green levies worth about £150 a year on average from household bills. Her scheme will cover England, Scotland and Wales, but something similar is expected to follow in Northern Ireland. » | Jessica Elgot and Peter Walker | Thursday, September 8, 2022

White House Warns Truss over Efforts to ‘Undo’ Northern Ireland Protocol

THE GUARDIAN: Biden administration says undoing the protocol would not be ‘conducive’ to a trade deal between the UK and US

The Biden administration has sent Liz Truss a message on her second day in office warning against “efforts to undo the Northern Ireland protocol”.

The warning came from the lectern in the White House briefing room, where spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about new British prime minister Truss’s first phone call with Joe Biden and whether a US-UK trade deal was discussed.

Northern Ireland was not mentioned in the question, but Jean-Pierre brought it up anyway.

“There’s no formal linkage on trade talks between the US and the UK and the Northern Ireland protocol, as we have said, but efforts to undo the Northern Ireland protocol would not create a conducive environment, and that’s basically where we are in the dialogue,” Jean-Pierre said.

“Not conducive to a trade deal” is the administration’s established position on British threats, spearheaded by Truss, to pass legislation negating part of the Northern Ireland protocol. » | Julian Borger in Washington | Thursday, September 8, 2022

Putin Threatens to Tear Up Fragile Ukraine Grain Deal in Bellicose Speech

THE GUARDIAN: Russian president says he wants to revise agreement to allow export of Ukrainian grain from Black Sea

Vladimir Putin has said he wants to revise a fragile international agreement to allow the export of Ukrainian grain in a move that could threaten the deal and revive fears of a renewed Russian naval blockade in the Black Sea.

During a bellicose speech at an economic conference in Vladivostok, Putin said he would speak with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, about “limiting the destinations for grain exports”, issuing a false claim that only two of 87 ships leaving Ukraine with grain had gone to developing countries.

The divisive statements came during a speech in which Putin also threatened to cut off all deliveries of gas, oil, and coal to Europe if they imposed a price cap on Russian energy imports. Recalling a Russian fairytale, he said that Europeans could “freeze like the wolf’s tail”.

The speech, nominally dedicated to the economy and trade, was one of the Russian leader’s most belligerent and defiant since the beginning of the Ukraine war. At one point, Putin declared that Russia had “lost nothing” in launching a war that has killed tens of thousands of people, including thousands of its own soldiers.

“We haven’t lost anything and we won’t lose anything,” said Putin, when asked about the cost of the invasion, which began more than six months ago. “The main gain is the strengthening of our sovereignty. » | Andrew Roth in Moscow | Wednesday, September 7, 2022

Antibody infusions are already used to treat some coronavirus patients, and microbiologist Dr. Natalia Freund, who directed the new study, said the antibodies she identified could be used to concoct a particularly potent infusion. » | Nathan Jeffay | Wednesday, September 7, 2022

Liz Truss Is Returning to the Fairytale Rconomics of the 1980s

OPEN DEMOCRACY: Excessive inequality and wealth redistribution to the rich have wrecked the economy. ‘Trussonomics’ won’t help

Liz Truss has made it clear that ‘handouts’ are not her preferred way. | PA Images / Alamy Stock Photo

Our new prime minister has already set out her primary economic principles. Although a £90bn bailout to help households and businesses cope with the energy crisis looks on the cards, Liz Truss has made it clear that “handouts” are not her preferred way.

Truss has little option but to make a bold move to prevent a catastrophic fall in living standards. But she has also publicly rejected the idea of looking at the economy through the “lens of redistribution”. By this, she means she is dropping any idea of tackling inequality. Instead, growth will be given priority “because that benefits everyone”.

Both of these declarations show a complete lack of understanding of recent and past political history.

They are a repeat of the arguments used in the 1970s by the anti-egalitarian school of ‘New Right’ evangelists. One of those evangelists, Keith Joseph, a close adviser to Margaret Thatcher, claimed that ‘true’ Conservatives need “to make the case against egalitarianism… The pursuit of equality has done, and is doing, more harm, stunting the incentives and rewards that are essential to any successful economy.” » | Stewart Lansley | Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Camelot has dropped its appeal against a legal ruling over the handover of its licence to operate the UK’s national lottery to its rival Allwyn.

Camelot, which has run the national lottery since it was launched in 1994, said it had withdrawn its legal challenge that would have resulted in it going to the court of appeal next week. It added that it would “now cooperate with Allwyn and the Gambling Commission to facilitate an orderly transition to the fourth licence”.

This means that Allwyn, owned by the billionaire Czech entrepreneur Karel Komárek, who made his fortune in sectors including oil and gas, moves a step closer to running the lottery from February 2024.

OPINION : GUEST ESSAY

THE NEW YORK TIMES: LONDON — “Do we confront this moment with honesty,” asked Rishi Sunak, one of the two candidates running to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister of Britain, “or do we tell ourselves comforting fairy tales?”

The answer, from the Conservative Party membership, at least, is fairy tales. On Monday, the members elected Liz Truss as their new leader and the next prime minister. In a campaign built around a belief in the miraculous power of tax cuts, Ms. Truss presented herself as the economic savior of a country heading into a winter of crisis. In the face of sky-high inflation and widespread economic misery, it’s a fantastical proposition.

But fairy tales don’t come out of nowhere. For her zealous commitment to privatization, deregulation and tax-cutting, many see Ms. Truss as a would-be second coming of Margaret Thatcher. Sealed by sartorial mimicry, there’s something in the comparison. Yet Ms. Truss’s most apt antecedent, in fact, is someone who had already left the Conservative Party under a cloud of controversy by the time Thatcher came to lead it: Enoch Powell.

Largely known for his bitterly racist denunciation of immigration, Powell has a claim to being Britain’s most influential postwar politician. That’s chiefly because, in an era of decolonization, he sketched out a route for Britain to maintain its global dominance. Fashioned in the dying of the imperial light, that roster of policies — preferential terms of global trade achieved through hard-line anti-migrant policies, shrinking the state, undermining organized labor and fostering finance — forms the basis of Ms. Truss’s politics today. The British Empire may have all but ended 60 years ago, but the country’s next prime minister is still in thrall to its legacy. » | Kojo Koram * | Tuesday, September 6, 2022

At least 35 civilians have been killed and 37 wounded when a convoy carrying supplies in Burkina Faso’s jihadist-hit north struck an improvised explosive device, the governor of the Sahel region has said.

The landlocked African state is in the grip of a seven-year insurgency that has claimed more than 2,000 lives and forced 1.9 million people to leave their homes.

Monday’s incident took place as the military-led convoy was supplying towns in the restive north on a road between Bourzanga to Djibo, according to a statement by Sahel region governor Rodolphe Sorgo.

“One of the vehicles carrying civilians hit an improvised explosive device. The provisional toll is 35 dead and 37 injured, all civilians,” it said. » | Agence France-Presse | Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Sep 5, 2022 Liz Truss has been chosen as the next Conservative leader and will become the UK’s next prime minister following the resignation of Boris Johnson.

She will be the country’s third woman prime minister and was selected in a vote among Tory Party members, who make up less than 1% of the nation’s population.

In her first speech after beating Tory leadership rival Rishi Sunak, Ms Truss promised to take action to deal with surging energy costs.

New PM: How Johnson Loyalist Liz Truss Bagged the Top Job in British Politics

FRANCE 24: She is only the third woman in history to become British prime minister, following in the footsteps of her Conservative predecessors Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. Who is 47-year-old Liz Truss and how did she manage to overtake her rival Rishi Sunak in the race to succeed Boris Johnson? FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at the new occupant of 10 Downing Street.

With 57.4 percent of the vote in the Conservative Party leadership contest , Truss can savour a comfortable victory over ex-chancellor Sunak. The outgoing foreign secretary's success is all the more satisfying because her challenger was initially the bookmakers' favourite to be the next prime minister. Truss's triumph can be explained by some strategic moves on her part that have played to the party faithful, but also by mishaps in the leadership campaign of her rival.

When the scandal-plagued Johnson resigned as prime minister in July, Truss was by no means a shoo-in to replace him. She arguably received a boost when Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, seen as a likely frontrunner, announced he would not be standing. Once the field was whittled down to two candidates by Conservative MPs, Sunak was in the lead. The 42-year-old was seen as a political heavyweight who steered the British economy through the Covid-19 pandemic as finance minister. » | Caroline Clarkson | Monday, September 5, 2022

Was schon im 18.

Many years ago, I flew down to the South of France, to a language school in Hyères to improve my French. I spent several weeks there on two separate occasions. Each time, I stayed with a delightful French married couple.

One day, my host’s wife was thinking of where I should do some sightseeing. She recommended I take a boat trip over to this island for the day. Being more than a little shy at that time, I was reluctant to go there, especially being alone; however, I plucked the courage and went.

The weather was glorious and very hot; the island was magnificent. I shan’t go into detail, but I spent one of the finest days of my life there. It was an extremely liberating experience. In fact, the following year, I went down to the same school and to the same family to continue my studies; naturally, I went over to the island again. That day, too, was equally sublime.

The French really know how to live life to the fullest. Little wonder we get such marvelous expressions as joie de vivre and savoir vivre from the French. People in the Anglosphere are so puritanical and boring by comparison with the fun-loving French.

Vive les français !
Vive la belle France !

Deutsche Version:

Ukraine War: Russia Wants to Destroy Europeans' Normal Life, Zelensky Warns

EPA

BBC: Russia wants to destroy the normal life of every European citizen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

"It is trying to attack with poverty and political chaos where it cannot yet attack with missiles," Mr Zelensky said in his regular address on Saturday.

He was speaking hours after Russia said that its main gas pipeline to Europe would not reopen as planned.

Europe accused Russia of using its gas supplies to blackmail Europe amid the Ukraine conflict, which Moscow denies.

Energy prices have soared since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February and scarce supplies could push up costs even further.

There are growing fears families in the EU will be unable to afford the cost of heating this winter.

Governments across the continent are contemplating what measures to take to alleviate the crisis.

Germany - one of the countries worst affected by the Russian supply disruption - announced a €65bn (£56bn) package of help on Sunday.

Good Causes Could Lose £1bn as Camelot Sues over ‘Unlawful’ National Lottery Licence

THE OBSERVER: UK Lotto operator challenges the Gambling Commission’s decision to award £6.4bn contract to its rival, Allwyn

More than £1bn for good causes could be lost over a legal action alleging the new licence to run the national lottery was awarded unlawfully, according to court filings seen by the Observer.

Camelot, which operated the national lottery for nearly three decades, is seeking to reverse the decision to hand the licence to its rival Allwyn. It will go to court later this month in an appeal to delay the handover of the £6.4bn contract. The case threatens to embroil the lottery in its biggest controversy since it was launched in 1994 – and there is even a risk the lottery will be suspended for the first time in its history.

The Gambling Commission warns in a legal submission obtained by the Observer: “In the worst scenario, there will be a gap in service between the expiry of the third licence on 31 January 2024 and the commencement of the fourth licence. The commission anticipates there will be an overall shortfall of payment to good causes of at least £1bn and, in the case of an interregnum, considerably more.’ » | Jon Ungoed-Thomas | Sunday, September 4, 2022

Liz Truss Says It Is Fair to Prioritise Tax Cuts That Benefit High Earners More

THE GUARDIAN: Prospective PM attacks ‘lens of redistribution’ after being told that national insurance cut will help rich 250 times more than poorest

It is fair to prioritise tax cuts that benefit the highest earners 250 times more than the poorest, Liz Truss has said, insisting it is wrong to view all economic policy through the “lens of redistribution”.

In her most thorough interview in the Conservative leadership campaign, a day before she is widely expected to be declared the winner, Truss said she would provide immediate help over energy bills, but declined to say what.

v “What I can say is that if I’m elected as prime minister, within one week I will make sure there is an announcement on how we are going to deal with the issue of energy bills, and of long-term supply, to put this country on the right footing for winter,” Truss told BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show.

“I understand that people are struggling, that businesses are also concerned about their energy bills and the impact it could have on their future. So what I want to reassure people is, I will act.”

But under repeated questioning, Truss refused to give any details, saying she would only set this out if she defeated Rishi Sunak to become Tory leader on Monday. She would then take over from Boris Johnson as prime minister the next day.

Truss did, however, insist she would not be deflected from her prioritisation of tax cuts, and her efforts to cut regulation, saying it was more important to grow the economy than to try to reduce economic inequalities.

Shown calculations setting out that her planned reversal of a recent rise in national insurance would benefit top earners by around £1,800 a year, and the lowest earner by about £7, and asked if this was fair, Truss said: “Yes, it is fair.”

She said: “The people at the top of the income distribution pay more tax, so inevitably when you cut taxes, you tend to benefit people who are more likely to pay tax. » | Peter Walker, Political correspondent | Sunday, September 4, 2022

"That bloody woman" was used to refer to Margaret Thatcher; but it applies equally to Liz Truss, perhaps even more so. Liz Truss—should it be Liz O'Leary?—is a hard-boiled, heartless woman who clearly wishes to emulate Thatcher, but will fail, I believe. At least Thatcher had stature and charisma; Truss has neither of these. She is also not well-schooled in matters of Christianity. Were she to be so, she would be familiar with this verse from Matthew:
“For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.” – Matthew 13: 12 (The Bible: King James Version)

Hasta La Vista, Baby: The Rise and Fall of Boris Johnson - BBC News

Sep 2, 2022 We are coming to the end of one of the most singular post war Premierships - and the demise of a Prime Minister who entered No10 just over three years ago, saying his mission was to restore Britain's faith in itself.

The following December, Boris Johnson won the biggest Conservative victory since Margaret Thatcher swept to power in 1987. Newsnight reflects on the recent meteoric rise, and spectacular fall of the man.

Was he entirely the architect of his own misfortune, or is that wide of the mark? The chronicler of Prime Ministers, Michael Cockerell, famously charted Boris Johnson's journey to the top in a landmark documentary almost a decade ago.

As we enter the final days of the Johnson era Newsnight asked him to update the story and assess the prime minister's fall and legacy.
