À l’approche du village d’Abrau-Durso (prononcer «Abraou-Diourso»), on se croirait en région Rhône-Alpes. Un lac couleur émeraude peuplé de bateaux, l’Abrau, est entouré de moyennes collines. Une petite église orthodoxe rappelle que l’on est en Russie. Non loin, 800 hectares de vigne profitent d’un terroir et d’un climat propices.

C’est ici, près de la mer Noire, dans la région viticole de Krasnodar (près de 50 % de la production russe, devant la Crimée), que l’œnologue français Georges Blanck, 59 ans, s’est installé en 2016. Recruté par le groupe Abrau-Durso, il supervise toute sa production viticole. «Je n’ai pas hésité un instant, après être venu visiter, confie-t-il. Le potentiel est immense, car la Russie est dans une phase de reconstruction de son capital viticole (démantelé par la prohibition décidée par Gorbatchev en 1985, NDLR). Le pays essaie de revenir au niveau qui était le sien il y a cent ans. Mais nos vins sont désormais d’un niveau international, basés sur la finesse et la légèreté. The Taliban Close In on Kabul, the Last Government Stronghold

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Taliban’s relentless, rapid advance across Afghanistan brought them on Sunday to the outskirts of the capital, Kabul, the last major city controlled by the government.

As it became clear that the Taliban were at the gates of the capital, thousands of Afghans who had sought refuge there after fleeing the insurgents’ brutal military offensive watched with growing alarm as the local police seemed to fade from their usual checkpoints.

Wais Omari, 20, a street vendor in the city, reflected those concerns. “The situation is not good,” he said. “If it gets worse, I will hide in my home.”

The Taliban, in a statement, said that they were in negotiations with the government and would not take the capital by force.

“The Islamic Emirate instructs all its forces to stand at the gates of Kabul, not to try to enter the city,” a spokesman said, using the name by which the insurgents refer to themselves.

THE GUARDIAN: As city after city falls to the Taliban, women fear that the freedoms won since 2001 will be crushed

In a market in Kabul, Aref is doing a booming trade. At first glance, the walls of his shop seem to be curtained in folds of blue fabric. On closer inspection, dozens and dozens of blue burqas hang like spectres from hooks on the wall. As the Taliban close in on Kabul, women inside the city are getting ready for what may be coming. “Before, most of our customers were from the provinces,” says Aref. “Now it is city women who are buying them.”

One of these women is Aaila, who is haggling with another shopkeeper over rapidly inflating burqa prices. “Last year these burqas cost AFS 200 [£2]. Now they’re trying to sell them to us for AFS 2,000 to 3,000,” she says. As the fear among women in Kabul has grown, the prices have risen.

For decades, the traditional Afghan burqa, mostly sold in shades of blue, was synonymous with Afghan women’s identity around the world. Usually made of heavy cloth, it is specifically designed to cover the wearer from head to toe. A netted fabric is placed near the eyes so that the woman inside can peer out through the meshing but nobody can see inside. It was enforced strictly during the Taliban regime in the late 1990s, and failure to wear one while in public could earn women severe punishments and public lashings from the Taliban’s “moral police”.

After the fall of the Taliban in 2001, even though many continued to choose to wear the burqa in adherence to religious and traditional beliefs, its rejection by millions of others across the country became a symbol of a new dawn for the country’s women, who were able to dictate what they wore for themselves again.

Les talibans se rapprochent dimanche de la prise complète du pouvoir en Afghanistan, après une campagne militaire d'une rapidité stupéfiante. Seule Kaboul, la capitale isolée et encerclée, reste à conquérir. Dimanche matin, des combattants ont néanmoins été aperçus par des habitants en banlieue éloignée, alors même que les insurgés ont reçu l'ordre de rester aux portes de la cité, selon leur porte-parole.

«L'Émirat islamique ordonne à toutes ses forces d'attendre aux portes de Kaboul, de ne pas essayer d'entrer dans la ville», a affirmé sur Twitter Zabihullah Mujahid, un porte-parole des talibans. «Il y a des combattants talibans armés dans notre quartier, a pourtant déclaré à l'AFP un habitant d'une banlieue à l'est de la capitale, mais il n'y a pas de combats».

Quelques heures après avoir pris Mazar-i-Sharif, la quatrième plus grande ville afghane et le principal centre urbain du nord du pays, les insurgés se sont emparés sans résistance dimanche de la ville de Jalalabad à l'est du pays. «Nous nous sommes réveillés ce matin avec les drapeaux blancs des talibans partout en ville. THE NEW YORK TIMES: After a week of rapid victories, the Taliban seized the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Sunday, leaving Kabul, the capital, as the only major urban center still in the government’s hands.

The insurgents’ brutal offensive, which began in May as the United States started withdrawing troops, has intensified over the past week, with one city after another falling. Their capture of Jalalabad, the bustling capital of Nangarhar Province, gives them control of every key city but Kabul.

The insurgents have now encircled the capital. Mazar-i-Sharif, the last major northern city held by the government, was lost to the Taliban on Saturday night. A day earlier, the insurgents seized major cities in the south and west.

In Kabul, neighborhoods have filled with arrivals from other parts of the country that are under Taliban control. Domestically, Biden has done some very good things, but this foreign policy decision is disastrous: it’s going to cause total chaos. Moreover, it will mark a further rightward shift in European politics. Poland’s president has decided to sign a bill that would set limits on the ability of Jews to recover property seized by Nazi German occupiers and retained by postwar communist rulers, drawing fury from Israel, which said the law was antisemitic.

“I made a decision today on the act, which in recent months was the subject of a lively and loud debate at home and abroad,” Andrzej Duda said in a statement published on Saturday. “After an in-depth analysis, I have decided to sign the amendment.”

Before the second world war Poland had been home to one of the world’s biggest Jewish communities but it was almost entirely wiped out by the Nazis, and Jewish former property owners and their descendants have been campaigning for compensation.

Mr Farthing said there are "no words to describe the hurt, the upset and the confusion" after the UK withdrew its troops from the country. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is to convene an emergency Cobra meeting as Taliban fighters continue to make advances across the country.

An heir to the Hormel meatpacking fortune, he was a philanthropist and LGBTQ+ activist, based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

President Bill Clinton nominated him to be ambassador to Luxembourg in 1997. But because of controversy over his identity and his activism, the Senate denied Hormel a confirmation vote. Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel called him too “aggressively gay,” for which Hagel apologized years later, and another Republican senator, Tim Hutchinson, claimed Hagel was anti-Catholic because he laughed at the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Clinton put him in the ambassadorial post through a recess appointment, bypassing the Senate, in 1999. Hormel served until 2001.

Pete Buttigieg, who this year became the first out Cabinet member as secretary of Transportation, often spoke of the homophobia that kept Hormel from being confirmed. Now he blames his reluctance to get tested for the death of his 22-month-old daughter, Alesha Kimi Pramudita. All 10 members of their crowded household suffered Covid-like symptoms but none were tested until Kimi went for an unrelated checkup. Hospitalized immediately, she died a day later.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Taliban’s rapid advance has made clear that U.S. efforts to turn Afghanistan’s military into a robust, independent fighting force have failed, with its soldiers feeling abandoned by inept leaders.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — The surrenders seem to be happening as fast as the Taliban can travel.

In the past several days, the Afghan security forces have collapsed in more than 15 cities under the pressure of a Taliban advance that began in May. On Friday, officials confirmed that those included two of the country’s most important provincial capitals: Kandahar and Herat.

The swift offensive has resulted in mass surrenders, captured helicopters and millions of dollars of American-supplied equipment paraded by the Taliban on grainy cellphone videos. In some cities, heavy fighting had been underway for weeks on their outskirts, but the Taliban ultimately overtook their defensive lines and then walked in with little or no resistance.

This implosion comes despite the United States having poured more than $83 billion in weapons, equipment and training into the country’s security forces over two decades.

Building the Afghan security apparatus was one of the key parts of the Obama administration’s strategy as it sought to find a way to hand over security and leave nearly a decade ago. These efforts produced an army modeled in the image of the United States’ military, an Afghan institution that was supposed to outlast the American war.

But it will likely be gone before the United States is.

Joe Biden’s decision to rapidly withdraw from Afghanistan is threatening to turn into one of the biggest Anglo-American foreign policy rifts in decades, with potentially dangerous political consequences if the UK government’s warnings about a return of terrorism and mass movement of refugees to Europe eventually prove correct.

Ben Wallace, the UK defence secretary, revealed in remarkably frank interviews on Friday that the UK was so aghast at the US decision to withdraw completely from Afghanistan next month that it had canvassed other Nato allies to see if there was support for a reconfigured alliance to continue the stabilisation force in Afghanistan without the US.

The Taliban continued its lightning advance on Friday, seizing four more provincial capitals and gaining control of more than two-thirds of country as its forces headed towards Kabul. Kandahar and Herat, the country’s second and third biggest cities, fell on Thursday.

Biden said as recently as July that there was no chance the Taliban would overrun the country, and denied that Afghanistan still represented a breeding ground for terrorism. THE NEW YORK TIMES: Lale Gul’s autobiographical and sexually frank tale of a woman breaking with her conservative Muslim culture, and her strict parents, is a best seller in the Netherlands. “I’m done hiding,” she says.

AMSTERDAM — Perhaps naïvely, Lale Gul thought she could continue living with the same people on whom she had based her best-selling novel: her strict Turkish-Dutch migrant family.

But just weeks after the February publication of her book — the autobiographical tale of a young woman breaking with her conservative Muslim culture — “a war broke out” in the family’s tiny apartment in a migrant neighborhood in Amsterdam, said the author of “Ik Ga Leven,” or “I Will Live.”

As years of building frustration erupted into open conflict that March evening, Ms. Gul, 23, fled her house in the middle of the night and has not returned since.

Looking back, Ms. Gul admitted that after writing an unbridled book revealing her journey to secularism, the thought that her parents would simply not hear about it was maybe a little foolhardy.

They did hear about it, as has most of the country: The novel quickly became one of the most read in the Netherlands, and she was in demand for TV interviews.

The publicity made it impossible not to address the book with her family, but she wanted to stay with them.

“Even after the book came out, I was still trying to negotiate with my parents, I wanted to make it work, try to combine their lives and my own life,” she said on a recent afternoon in the 17th-century canal house where her publisher has an office. “Despite everything, they are my family.”

„Kandahar ist vollkommen erobert“, erklärte ein Taliban-Sprecher am Freitag bei Twitter. „Die Mudschaheddin haben den Märtyrerplatz in der Stadt erreicht.“ Ein Anwohner sagte der Nachrichtenagentur AFP, die afghanische Armee habe offenbar den Rückzug angetreten. Zahlreiche Soldaten begaben sich demnach zu einer Militäreinrichtung außerhalb der Stadt. It comes hot on the heels of militants overrunning the strategic town of Ghazni, just 150 kilometers from the capital Kabul. Heavy fighting is also taking place in Kandahar, the country's second biggest city. Apr 28, 2020 • Im Fitnessstudio haben sich die beiden Männer kennengelernt, mit der Liebe ging es dann sehr schnell. Nach einem Jahr haben Ibrahim und Benjamin im November letzten Jahres geheiratet. Ibrahim war vor vier Jahren aus dem Libanon nach Deutschland geflohen, da er als Homosexueller in seiner Heimat nicht frei leben konnte. Sein schlimmstes Erlebnis: Er wurde von homophoben Männern aus dem dritten Stock durchs Fenster geworfen. Wie durch ein Wunder überlebte er den Sturz, war monatelang im Krankenhaus.

Auch seine Familie will nichts von ihm wissen, von seinem Vater wurde er geschlagen, als der erfahren hatte, dass sein Sohn Männer liebt. Trotzdem vermisst Ibrahim seine Familie sehr: „Ich bin traurig und enttäuscht, wenn ich sehe, wie Bens Familie unsere Hochzeit unterstützt und von meiner Familie kommt gar nichts.“ Die deutsche Familie seines Verlobten, habe ihn sofort herzlich und ohne Umstände aufgenommen. Das sei ein großer Trost für ihn, sagt Ibrahim. Mit ihnen habe er eine neue Familie gefunden.

Inzwischen engagiert sich Ibrahim für die Rechte homosexueller Flüchtlinge in Deutschland.

Virginia Giuffre, who was an accuser of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, claims she was sexually assaulted by Prince Andrew in London and New York.

A spokeswoman for Prince Andrew, 61, said there was "no comment" on the case, which was filed under New York's Child Victims Act. He has consistently denied the claims.

The case alleges the prince sexually abused Ms Giuffre - then known as Virginia Roberts - at the London home of Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and at Epstein's homes in Manhattan and Little St James in the US Virgin Islands.

It claims the prince engaged in sexual acts without her consent, knowing how old she was and "that she was a sex-trafficking victim". >br />

MADAME FIGARO : Alors que le prince Andrew est sous le joug d’accusations d’agressions sexuelles dans le cadre de l’affaire Epstein, le prince Charles estime que son frère ne reviendra pas à la vie publique. Et craint pour la réputation de la famille royale.

De nouveaux développements concernant le prince Andrew et son rôle dans l’affaire Jeffrey Eptsein viennent, encore une fois, porter atteinte à la réputation de la famille royale. Alors que le duc d’York est sous le coup d'une plainte officielle pour agression sexuelle sur mineure et abus sexuel, les membres du clan Windsor sont de plus en plus inquiets concernant la gestion de cette crise.

D’après le Times, le prince Charles aurait peur que cette dernière éclipse le jubilé de platine de la reine, qui doit avoir lieu en juin 2022. «Le prince (Charles) aime son frère et est capable d’éprouver de l'empathie durant la période trouble que ce dernier traverse, quelles qu’en soient les raisons», a déclaré une source au Times. «Cependant, cela portera atteinte à la réputation de l’institution. Il a conclu depuis longtemps qu’il s’agissait probablement d’un problème insoluble», ajoute-t-elle. Depuis plus de trois siècles, le café est un lieu de liberté emblématique de la vie intellectuelle sur le Vieux Continent. Là se fréquentent penseurs, écrivains et artistes. Les idées bouillonnent à la faveur des conversations, avant de se cristalliser dans des œuvres et de se diffuser dans la société. Voyage parmi ces cafés illustres que l’Encyclopédie appelait des «manufactures d’esprit».

En France, tout le monde est un peu un intellectuel au café du commerce. C’est au bistrot que naissent nos révolutions. Aujourd’hui encore, entre deux confinements, on râle au comptoir. Capitale des intellectuels et des barricades, Paris pullule de ces lieux où l’intelligentsia a refait le monde autour d’un bock, d’un café crème ou d’un pastis glacé. Chaque avant-garde aura son quartier. Dédaignant les salons aristocratiques, les philosophes débattent au Procope, puis au Café de la Régence, au Palais-Royal. Sous la Restauration et le second Empire, les dandys se retrouvent chez Tortoni, sur les grands boulevards. Après 1870, les peintres et les chansonniers occupent Montmartre, lustré de l’éclat tragique de la Commune. La rive gauche prendra sa revanche au «siècle des intellectuels» (Winock), et après la Première Guerre mondiale Montparnasse a été le cœur des Années folles.
