EXPRESS: FRENCH president Francois Hollande has renewed his "love affair" with the actress he allegedly cheated on the First Lady with, according to a French magazine.
VSD magazine claimed in their latest edition that Mr Hollande's relationship with blonde beauty Julie Gayet, 41, was very much back on track and that the pair see each other "almost every day".
Accompanied with the headline, "It's started again", the magazine supported their suggestions with published pictures apparently showing Ms Gayet arriving and leaving Elysee [sic] Palace in a blue Ford Galaxy with tinted windows on October 30.
It is believed the TV actress had just returned to Paris after taking part in the Tokyo Film Festival.
"There is no longer any possible doubt: François Hollande and Julie Gayet are still in love," VSD wrote. » | Levi Winchester | Friday, November 07, 2014

Priest Saves Ancient Christian Manuscripts from IS Flames
EXPRESS: A COURAGEOUS priest has saved hundreds of ancient Christian manuscripts from falling into the hands of Islamic State fighters in Iraq.
Father Nageeb Michaeel had the 750 priceless texts, dating back more than 700 years, boxed up and packed off to a secret location on the back of two pick-up trucks.
The 1,300 fragile documents were spirited away from Mar Behnam Syriac Catholic monastery in Qaraqosh.
The same night, and helped by his small team of Dominican priests, he then led an exodus of 30,000 refugees from the ancient Christian town in northern Iraq hours before it was overrun by Muslim fundamentalists.

Mikhail Gorbachev: World On Brink of New Cold War over Ukraine
THE GUARDIAN: Former Soviet Union leader says tensions between US and Russia should be kept under control
Mikhail Gorbachev has warned that tensions between the US and Russia over Ukraine have put the world on the brink of a new cold war.
The former leader of the Soviet Union said: “We must make sure that we get the tensions that have arisen recently under control.”
The call comes amid a warning from the Dutch foreign minister that the last victims of the Malaysia Airlines plane shot down over Ukraine might never be recovered.
Gorbachev was speaking on Saturday at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, close to the Brandenburg Gate.
His perestroika and glasnost reforms helped spell the end of communism in eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He kept Soviet troops stationed in East Germany in their barracks the night of 9 November 1989, as the border was opened.
The 83-year-old former leader has accused the west – particularly the US – of “triumphalism” after the collapse of the communist bloc. » | Chris Johnston and agencies | Saturday, November 08, 2014

Uganda Drafts New Anti-gay Laws
The Ugandan government could introduce new wide-reaching anti-gay laws before the end of the year, which could see people jailed for up to seven years for “promoting homosexuality”, activists warned on Saturday.
The move comes nearly a year after Ugandan politicians passed legislation that could have imposed life sentences on gays. The bill was struck down by the constitutional court on a technicality.
According to a leaked copy of the new draft law, MPs have instead focused on outlawing the “promotion” of homosexuality – a potentially far more repressive and wide-reaching measure.
Frank Mugisha, a gay-rights activist, said: “People don’t realise that the ‘promotion’ part of it will affect everybody. If newspapers report about homosexuality it could be seen as promotion. My Twitter account could be seen as promotion. All human rights groups that include LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender] rights defence in their activities could be accused of promotion.”
According to the draft, anyone convicted of “promoting” homosexuality would be liable to seven years in prison. “We have confirmed that the draft comes from the cabinet. Their plan is to present it to parliament as soon as possible, before the end of the year,” Mugisha said. » | Chris Johnston and agencies | Saturday, November 08, 2014

Saudi Arabia Considers Lifting Ban on Women Drivers
Saudi Arabia is considering proposals to allow women to drive, a member of the king's advisory council has said.
The recommendations from the Shura Council to change the law would apply only to women over 30, who must be off the road by 8pm and cannot wear make-up while driving.
Nevertheless, such a move would represent a major victory for activists after years of the absolute monarchy rejecting any review of the ban – and punishing women caught driving.
Earlier this year, a woman reportedly received 150 lashes for being caught driving.
The kingdom is the only country in the world that forbids women from driving, with Muslim clerics claiming "licentiousness" will spread if women drive. » | Barney Henderson and AP | Saturday, November 08, 2014

» | afp/Newsnet | vendredi 07 novembre 2014
Vladimir Putin Claims Britain Was to Blame for Nazi March across Europe
Speaking during a meeting with young historians in Moscow, Mr Putin urged the group to examine the lead-up to the war and claimed that Western historians today try to to "hush up" the Munich Agreement.
The pact involving France and Britain - instigated by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain – appeased Adolf Hitler by permitted his annexation of Czechoslovakia's Sudentenland.
According to a Kremlin transcript of the event, Mr Putin said: "Chamberlain came, waved a piece of paper and said, 'I've brought you peace' when he returned to London after the talks.
"To which Churchill, I think, said somewhere to a small group of people, 'That's it, now war is inevitable'.
"Because compromise with an aggressor in the form of Hitlerite Germany was clearly leading to a large-scale future military conflict, and some people understood that."
However, the Russian president claimed there was nothing wrong with the Nazi-Soviet pact. » | Friday, November 07, 2014
Britain Has Sold Its Soul with the Qatari Deal
David Cameron has signed a security agreement with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al[-]Thani |
Cars bearing the logos of Islamic State (Isil) drive around the streets. Within sight of the city centre lies the only official overseas mission of the Taliban. Jihadis sowing instability in perhaps 15 countries, from Algeria to Pakistan, direct their operations from pleasant villas in the suburbs – or, in the case of the terror group Hamas, from suites in the best hotels, where they can sometimes be seen relaxing by the pool.
The mosques host some of the world’s most influential extremist ideologues, their words pinged round the globe via their personal television channels. Hundreds of millions of pounds flow to organisations defined by Britain as terrorist, much of it from the government itself.
An official of that government, Salim Hasan Khalifa Rashid al‑Kuwari, channelled many such dollars to al-Qaeda while working for the interior ministry, according to the US Treasury department. The foreign minister’s cousin was detained in Lebanon, also for financing al-Qaeda; he was then convicted in his absence, after his government reportedly applied intense pressure on Lebanon to free him before trial.
This is Qatar, the country with which David Cameron has just signed a defence and security agreement. Did the deal, perhaps, include a promise by the Qataris to stop this sort of behaviour? Did it commit Qatar to end its support for the Islamist militias who have helped reduce Libya to anarchy, or to kick out the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood? It did not.
In fact, it was Britain that made the concessions, committing to share its classified intelligence and expertise with the Qatari state, and agreeing to work more closely with its security forces. We were told that Mr Cameron would talk tough at his meeting with the Emir of Qatar last week. Instead, he seems to have spent much of his time asking for money. My comment:
When I look at Cameron's visage in the newspapers, I see nothing but a weak, ineffectual fool of a man. By the time this man finishes, he's going to make Neville Chamberlain look like Genghis Khan!
Our country is certainly not safe in Cameron's hands.
I speak as a died-in-the-wool Conservative: The sooner we get rid of this clown, the better it will be for all of us. He's a menace to British society. – © Mark Alexander

Anjem Choudary Claims He Would Renounce British Citizenship and Live under Isis Rule
THE INDEPENDENT: But only if British government grants London-born lawyer safe passage - and the return of his passport
Radical cleric Anjem Choudray [sic] has claimed he would renounce his British citizenship and live under the rule of Isis, if the government would grant him safe passage.
In an interview with the [sic] Times the radical preacher claims that if he had his passport he would have already travelled to areas in Syria or Iraq presently controlled by the militant Islamic organisation Isis, also known as the Islamic State.
In response Keith Vaz, chairman of the Common home affairs select committee, said: “If he wants to go, he should be allowed to go. I think that would be a much better scenario than having him stay.
“Why should the Home Office or anyone else give him safe passage? He must take the consequences if he is propagating the views of Isis,” Mr Vaz said. “I think people would like to see the back of him.”
However, the London-born preacher, who trained as a lawyer, cannot leave the country because the Home Office has confiscated his passport.
“I believe the world belongs to God and that one day, hopefully, the UK will be part of an Islamic State. Why shouldn’t I be free to travel to the Khalifah [caliphate] and see what life is like under the Sharia?” Mr Choudary asked. » | Rose Troup Buchanan | Friday, November 07, 2014

North Koreans Working as ‘State-sponsored Slaves’ in Qatar
Thousands of migrant labourers from North Korea are toiling for years on construction sites in Qatar for virtually no pay – including on the vast new metropolis that is the centrepiece of the World Cup – in what may amount to “state-sponsored slavery”.
According to testimonies from workers and defectors, labourers from the reclusive state said they receive almost no salaries in person while in the Gulf emirate during the three years they typically spend there.
They work in the expectation they will collect their earnings when they return to North Korea, but according to a series of testimonies from defectors and experts, workers receive as little as 10% of their salaries when they go home, and some may receive nothing. One North Korean worker at a construction site in central Doha told the Guardian: “We are here to earn foreign currency for our nation.”
The North Korean regime, led by Kim Jong-un, is currently subject to international sanctions as it continues to defy calls to end its nuclear programme and address severe human rights abuses. A recent UN report accused the regime of crimes against humanity. The foreign currency earned by its overseas workforce is a crucial tool for propping up the isolated country’s fragile economy. Armed Police Arrest Four Men amid Fears of Islamist Remembrance Day Terror Plot
Four suspected Islamist terrorists have been arrested by armed police on suspicion of plotting attacks in the UK – amid fears of a Remembrance Sunday plot.
Those arrested included a 19-year-old High Wycombe man who neighbours said had returned from a trip to Pakistan earlier this year and was described as having been recently radicalised.
Police would not discuss whether the men had a specific target in mind but the timing of the raids raises the prospect that they may have been planning an incident on Remembrance Sunday.
It is understood there is no direct link to Syria or the terror group Isil but one line of police inquiry is likely to examine whether the men were planning a gun attack.
The men, aged 19 to 27, were held overnight at locations across west London and High Wycombe in the Thames Valley area, Scotland Yard said. » | Patrick Sawer and Tom Whitehead | Friday, November 07, 2014

Iran’s Dog Walkers Could Face 74 Lashes in Criminalisation of Pet Ownership
A group of Iranian MPs has proposed making it a criminal offence to keep dogs as pets or walk them in public, with offenders subject to 74 lashes or a fine.
Iran’s reformist Shargh newspaper reported on Thursday that 32 members of parliament, who are mostly affiliated to the conservatives, had put forward the proposal for the legislative body to vote on.
If the bill passes the Majlis (Iranian parliament), “walking dogs, trading them or keeping them at home will be punishable by 74 lashes or a fine of 1m to 10m Tomans [an equivalent of £200 to £2,000],” Shargh said.
“Walking and playing with animals such as dogs and monkeys outdoors and in public places are harmful to the health and the peace of other people, especially kids and women, and are against our Islamic culture,” the bill says.
Elias Naderan, Esmail Kowsari and Fatemeh Alia are among influential Iranian parliamentarians who support the proposal. » | Saeed Kamali Dehghan | Thursday, November 06, 2014

Sectarian Tensions Running High, Say Australian Muslim Leaders
"The tensions are very high and will continue to be high," said Jamal Daoud, a Shia community leader in Sydney, where a 47-year old Shia leader was shot in the shoulder early Monday morning, as worshipers observed the Shia ritual of Ashura.
He said Rasoul Al Mousawi, a leader in the Shia community focused around the Islamic center in Greenacre, south-west Sydney, had been released from hospital on Tuesday and was doing well.
The attack was only one incident in a string of attacks and threats against Shia Muslims by Sunni extremists who sympathized with ISIS, he claimed, and had followed an incident where a group of men had driven past the Islamic center, yelling comments such as "IS lives forever" and "Shia dogs" in Arabic.
A security guard had also been attacked by a group of men who appeared to be followers of the austere Wahhabi tradition of Sunni Islam on Friday, he said.
"There's high tension between Sunni and Shia, but these extremists, they threaten and attack Sunnis too," he said.
"Anyone who speaks against the fighting in Syria and advocating the government to take action against people in Iraq and Syria -- they are threatened and attacked."
Jamal Rifi, a Sydney-based GP and Sunni community leader, agreed, saying sectarian tensions were at an unprecedented level as a result of the brutal Syrian conflict, and the appeal of ISIS to radicalized Sunni youth in Australia. » | Tim Hume, CNN | Thursday, November 06, 2014

Bill Maher Warns Berkeley Students Protesting Him Over Islam That Their Free Speech Reputation Hangs in the Balance
Now Maher is firing back.
On numerous occasions Maher has leveled harsh words against Islam, particularly the radical variety, most recently during a tense debate with actor Ben Affleck on “Real Time” that grabbed many headlines.
In the wake of that dustup, a Chang.org petition to disinvite Maher from the Berkeley graduation has drawn more than 5,000 signers:
“Bill Maher is a blatant bigot and racist who has no respect for the values UC Berkeley students and administration stand for. In a time where climate is a priority for all on campus, we cannot invite an individual who himself perpetuates a dangerous learning environment. Bill Maher’s public statements on various religions and cultures are offensive and his dangerous rhetoric has found its way into our campus communities.”But on Friday night’s edition of “Real Time,” Maher took a few minutes to reply to the Berkeley students, noting that his graduation speech is coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the college’s storied free speech movement. » | Dave Urbanski | Sunday, November 02, 2014

Cosmetics Company Makes Al-Qaeda Leader Pin-up for Hair Removal Advert
The photograph of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was taken in 2003 shortly after his capture during a raid in Pakistan. |
A Turkish cosmetics company has used a former al-Qaeda "mastermind" as the model to advertise its hair removal cream.
The advert shows a photograph of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed – known as the "principle architect" of the September 11 attacks – wearing a baggy white T-shirt that exposes a hairy neck and shoulders.
Above the photograph, the advert's slogan reads: "The hair will not go away because you keep waiting!"
The cosmetics company said that the use of the image was accidental, saying they had not known the photograph showed a member a member of al-Qaeda. » | Ruth Sherlock, Gaziantep | Wednesday, November 05, 2014

Why I don’t Believe People Who Say They Loathe Islam But Not Muslims
Stalin and Mao would have enthusiastically endorsed Sam Harris (above) when he wrote that "there are some beliefs so terrible that we are justified in killing people just for holding them". |
It is a trope among people who loathe and fear Islam that their fear and loathing has nothing in common with racism because Islam is not a race, the implication being that hating Muslims is rational and wise whereas hating black people is deeply irrational and stupid.
Some people who claim that Islam is profoundly evil will also say that they bear Muslims no ill will but I don’t think they are telling the truth. It is really difficult and indeed psychologically unnatural to claim that you hate an ideology without hating the people in whose lives it is expressed. Religions, nations, and even races are all shared imaginative constructs (although nations and races have other characteristics as well) and if you really want to extirpate them, you must extirpate the people who imagine them as well.
I remember George W Bush explaining that we were not going to war with the Iraqi people, but with the Iraqi government. Since then, something like a million of the Iraqi people have died as a result of our not going to war with them. The distinction is no doubt a great comfort to their surviving relatives but it’s not very useful for predictive purposes. » | Andrew Brown | Wednesday, November 05, 2014

'You Don't Frighten Me': Jean-Claude Juncker Taunts David Cameron
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Jean-Claude Juncker has taunted David Cameron, boasting that the British leader does not scare him and mocked the Prime Minister for failing to win his battles with the European Union
Speaking after the first weekly meeting of his new Brussels administration, the president of the European Commission bragged that he was “not the type who trembles, in front of prime ministers or at any other time”.
“I'm not frightened of any prime ministers,” he said. The Conservative leader was humiliated at a summit in July when he tried to stop Mr Juncker, a passionate federalist, from becoming president of the commission.
Mr Cameron was out-voted, after being betrayed by the German Chancellor and Mr Juncker was installed in the commission, taking up his new post this week.
He was then slapped down by Angela Merkel, again, and left isolated at another summit two weeks ago when angrily refusing a commission demand that Britain paid an extra £1.7 billion surcharge to the EU budget.
Chancellor Merkel, with French support and backing from a majority of other EU leaders, told him to pay the bill.
“I don't have a problem with David Cameron. He has problem with the other prime ministers,” boasted Mr Juncker on Wednesday.
Britain faces humiliation over the budget demand after Mr Cameron told MPs that he would refuse to pay the full amount or meet a December 1 payment deadline.
A meeting of EU finance ministers on Friday is expected to tell George Osborne, the Chancellor, that he must hand over the full surcharge to the Brussels budget. In a concession, billed by EU officials as a compromise but unlikely to satisfy Tories, Britain will be allowed to pay the £1.7bilion in instalments. » | Bruno Waterfield, Brussels | Wednesday, November 05, 2014

Finland Warns of New Cold War as EU and US Fail to Grasp Situation in Russia
THE GUARDIAN: Finnish president Sauli Niinisto set to meet David Cameron and other northern European leaders at conference in Helsinki
Western countries are “at the gates” of a new cold war with Russia sparked by the Ukraine crisis and a continuing failure to grasp the depth and seriousness of President Vladimir Putin’s grievances with the US and EU, the Finnish president, Sauli Niinisto, has warned.
Speaking to the Guardian at his official residence before a conference in Helsinki on Thursday attended by Britain’s David Cameron and leaders of the Nordic and Baltic states, Niinisto said Finland had a long tradition of trying to maintain friendly relations with Russia. Turkey's President Moves into World's Biggest Palace Costing £384 Million
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stands inside the new Ak Saray presidential palace (White House) on the outskirts of Ankara, Turkey |
Turkey’s new president has been accused of behaving like a “sultan” after he installed himself in the biggest residential palace in the world, built for a price tag of £384 million.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan now resides in the White Palace, which was constructed in breach of court orders in protected forest land in the capital, Ankara.
Boasting 1,000 rooms covering a total floor area of 3.1 million square feet, the palace is four times the size of Versailles, allowing Mr Erdogan to exceed the residential grandeur of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” of France. » | David Blair | Wednesday, November 05, 2014
Czech President Shocks Nations in Expletive-filled Interview
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Czech president Milos Zeman swears his way through a radio interview in English and Czech, leading to hundreds of complaints
The Czech president has come under attack from the country’s prime minister for his liberal use of profanities in a radio interview that shocked the nation.
The country’s media watchdog said it received hundreds of complaints following the Sunday night interview in which Milos Zeman demonstrated his knowledge of English expletives while littering his speech with Czech vulgarities.
“The president should not speak in such a way as it damages the reputation of the presidency, sets a bad example and does nothing for our reputation abroad,” said an angry Bohuslav Sobotka, the Czech prime minister.
Petr Fiala, leader of the opposition Civic Democrats, also joined in a chorus of disapproval emanating from across the political spectrum saying the president “no longer just pushes the limits: he exceeds them.”
“I can’t believe the Czech president spoke in such a way,” he added. » | Matthew Day in Warsaw | Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Arizona Professor Claims U.S. Military 'Greater Threat' to Peace Than ISIS
University of Arizona instructor Musa al-Gharbi, who also is an academic affiliate at the university’s Southwest Initiative for the Study of Middle East Conflicts, made the comments in a column penned for the online forum TruthOut, and defended them when reached by The Washington Free Beacon. He called Americans "hypocritical" for expressing moral outrage at the Islamic State, which has raped, murdered and beheaded thousands of Muslims and Christians in its quest to establish a Muslim caliphate in Syria and Iraq.
“It would not be a stretch to say that the United States is actually a greater threat to peace and stability in the region than ISIS — not least because U.S. policies in Iraq, Libya and Syria have largely paved the way for ISIS’ emergence as a major regional actor,” al-Gharbi wrote in the article titled, “How Much Moral High Ground Does the U.S. Have Over ISIS?” » | FoxNews | Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Prince of Wales’s Plea to Muslims over Christian Persecution
Muslim leaders have a duty to warn their own followers about the “indescribable tragedy” of the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and around the world, the Prince of Wales has insisted.
He said that faith leaders must ensure their followers respect believers in other faiths “rather than remaining silent”.
His comments came in a special message recorded for the publication of a new report which concludes that Christians are the “most persecuted religious minority” in the world and that Muslim countries dominate the list of places where religious freedom is most under threat.
While emphasising the importance of his own personal Christian faith, he also signalled that he saw his role as to “defend” followers of other faiths including Islam.
Britain’s “future as a free society” depends on recognising the “crucial role” played by people of faith, he said.
But he warned that freedom of religion is also being “challenged” in Western countries. (+ video) » | John Bingham, Religious Affairs Editor | Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Australia: Shooting Sparks Fear of Muslim Sectarian Violence
The attack, on a 47-year-old father of five at a Shia establishment, happened in front of his family on one of the holiest days of the Shia Muslim calendar.
The man, identified as Rasoul Al-Musawi, was standing outside the prayer hall in Greenacre, in Sydney’s southwest about 1.15am when he was struck in the face and shoulder with pellets. He was expected to undergo surgery. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. » | Anthony Klan | Journalist | Sydney | Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Convert to Islam Tests Boundaries of Germany’s Terror Laws
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Standoff between Islamist preacher Sven Lau and German security agents shows the difficulty of drawing a clear line between opinion and sedition.
WUPPERTAL, Germany—Fundamentalist Islamic preacher Sven Lau claims he has a simple test to separate undercover officers from passersby. He gives them the finger. If they don’t respond, he said, “they’re intelligence agents.”
German authorities have spent at least eight years monitoring Mr. Lau, a 34-year-old ex-firefighter from a Catholic family who now practices a strict form of Islam known as Salafism.
Officials say Mr. Lau is one of the most prominent Islamic preachers in Germany, with a charismatic message that lures young Germans into radical Muslim circles. The head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency called Mr. Lau one of the country’s “best-known propagandists.” Authorities allege Mr. Lau inspired some of his followers to join Islamic militants in Syria and Iraq, and fear they will eventually spawn terror attacks in Germany and the West. Shia Muslims Chanting ‘Down with Isis’ Join Ashura Procession in Sydney
Thousands of Shia Muslims marched through the Sydney’s CBD on Tuesday to mark Ashura, the anniversary of the death of the prophet Muhammad’s grandson Husayn Ibn Ali.
The black-clad procession numbered more than 2,000 and stretched almost a kilometre, led by women in chadors and green headbands chanting, “down with Isis” and “Husayn is for peace”.
At the lead was a large sign linking Husayn’s death at the battle of Karbala in AD680 at the hands of the caliph Yazid to the death of Jesus and new threats from religious extremists in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Oppressors attacked Jesus Christ to crucify him, but he was victorious. After centuries, similar people attacked Imam Husayn to demolish truth and justice, but he was victorious,” the sign read.

Austria's Muslims Fear Changes to Historic Islam Law
The new draft, which is partly aimed at tackling Islamist radicalism, forbids any foreign funding. But Austria's official Islamic Community says it reflects a widespread mistrust of Muslims and fails to treat them equally.
Islam has been an official religion in Austria since 1912. The Islam law, the "Islamgesetz", was brought in by the Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph, after Austria's annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Under the law, Muslims, like Catholics, Jews and Protestants, are guaranteed wide-ranging rights, including religious education in state schools. » | Bethany Bell | BBC News | Vienna | Tuesday, November 04, 2014

How Tunisia Became a Breeding Ground for Jihadists
It is just the sort of neighbourhood that Tunisia’s revolution was meant to help. Douar Hicher’s concrete flats are filled with young men and women who drove the uprising that kicked off the Arab Spring of 2011, hoping to usher in a new era of opportunity.
But something has gone wrong. These few square miles of dusty sprawl in the capital, Tunis, have not welcomed the western-style freedom that many thought the Tunisian revolution was supposed to usher in. Instead, it has become notorious for another sort of revolution: at least 50 of its young men are now fighting with the jihadists in Syria and Iraq.
“Jihad is an Islamic obligation,” says 30-year old Abdelmoneim as [he] wanders through the backstreets. “If it was organised for me, I'd go."
Several of Abdelmoneim’s friends travelled to fight in Syria last year. “Seeing their photos on Facebook, I cannot blame them,” he says. “Life is good there.” » | Louisa Loveluck, Tunis | Tuesday, November 04, 2014

Republicans Pledge 'New Direction' for America as Polls Show Senate Control
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Dragged down by an unpopular president, Democrats try desperately to defy electoral gravity as Republicans scent victory in the midterm elections
Barack Obama faces the prospect of spending his final two years in office as a 'lame duck' president, with polls showing the Republicans poised to recapture control of the US Senate in Tuesday's midterm elections.
Although Mr Obama's name is nowhere on the ballot, Republicans placed the increasingly embattled US leader at the centre of a national campaign to retake the US Senate and fire Republican dreams of recapturing the White House in 2016.

Britain's Spy Chief Says US Tech Firms Aid Terrorism
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: New GCHQ director Richard Hannigan accuses some Silicon Valley companies of becoming 'the command and control networks of choice' for terrorists
Technology giants such as Facebook and Twitter have become "the command and control networks of choice" for terrorists and criminals but are "in denial" about the scale of the problem, the new head of GCHQ has said.
Robert Hannigan said that Isil terrorists in Syria and Iraq have "embraced the web" and are using it to intimidate people and inspire "would-be jihadis" from all over the World to join them.
He urged the companies to work more closely with the security services, arguing that it is time for them to confront "some uncomfortable truths" and that privacy is not an "absolute right".
He suggested that unless US technology companies co-operate, new laws will be needed to ensure that intelligence agencies are able to track and pursue terrorists. » | Steven Swinford, Senior Political Correspondent | Monday, November 03, 2014

Islamic State Announces Beheadings for All Who Insult Allah
In any case, here again the Islamic State proves its extremism. The more moderate Sharia enforcers David Cameron and Theresa May will not behead you for insulting Allah; they will just take away your ability to broadcast, hold public assemblies, or write on the Internet.

In Malaysia, ‘Allah’ Is Reserved for Muslims Only
Pupils at a Christian kindergarten in Kota Kinabalu, on Borneo, are among non-Muslims not allowed by Malaysian law to use the Malay word for God. |
Technically, she broke the law.
According to a series of government orders and rulings by Malaysia’s Islamic councils, the word for God in the Malay language – “Allah” – is reserved for Muslims. Malay-language bibles are banned everywhere except inside churches. State regulations ban a list of words, including Allah, in any non-Muslim context.
Malaysia, with its collage of ethnic groups and religions, has a long history of tensions over issues ranging from dietary differences to the economic preferences enshrined in Malaysian law for the Malay Muslim majority.
But there is probably no dispute more fundamental and more emotionally charged than who owns the word God.
For Malaysia’s religious minorities, the government’s ban on non-Muslims using the word Allah, and the repeated seizures by government officials of Malay-language Bibles, is enough to make a smiling and cheery kindergarten teacher snap in anger. » | Thomas Fuller | Monday, November 03, 2014
Midterm Elections: Barack Obama in Political Quarantine as Campaign Draws to a Close
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The President is having a fittingly subdued end to a subdued campaign season, cloistered in the White House with his advisors
As the rest of America's political class spends the last full day of the midterm elections frantically campaigning, President Barack Obama is cloistered in the White House discussing economic figures with his advisors.
It is a fittingly subdued end to a subdued campaign season for the President.
Two years after he convincingly won a second term in the White House, Mr Obama is so personally unpopular that Democrats have relegated him to the sidelines in this election in the hope his toxic poll numbers will not infect their candidates.
Once considered his party's most gifted campaigner, Mr Obama has made few appearances on the campaign trail this year and stayed in Washington through much of the election.
He has steered well clear of the roughly ten battleground states which will decide control of the US Senate, even those like Colorado, Iowa and New Hampshire, which he won in 2012. » | Raf Sanchez, Washington | Monday, November 03, 2014

» | ats/Newsnet | lundi 03 novembre 2014
