EXPRESS: A COURAGEOUS priest has saved hundreds of ancient Christian manuscripts from falling into the hands of Islamic State fighters in Iraq.
Father Nageeb Michaeel had the 750 priceless texts, dating back more than 700 years, boxed up and packed off to a secret location on the back of two pick-up trucks.
The 1,300 fragile documents were spirited away from Mar Behnam Syriac Catholic monastery in Qaraqosh.
The same night, and helped by his small team of Dominican priests, he then led an exodus of 30,000 refugees from the ancient Christian town in northern Iraq hours before it was overrun by Muslim fundamentalists.
The Sunni extremists are wiping out entire towns and villages and destroying religious artefacts in their haste to create an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East. » | Stuardt Winter | Saturday, November 08, 2014
