Mass Mournings, 6 Days and 2 Countries: Iran Prepares to Bury Supreme Leader

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Long-delayed funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed during U.S.-Israeli strikes at the war’s outset, are set to begin Friday. For the regime, it is a critical moment to demonstrate that it has endured.

There are few analogues in history for the size, scale and import of the funeral that Iran’s government is preparing to hold for its slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Starting Friday in the capital, Tehran, and running for nearly a week, with ceremonies planned in at least five cities across Iran and Iraq, the funeral is expected to draw tens of millions of people, government officials have said.

Perhaps more striking than the funeral’s complexity and scope is its symbolism at this moment. It comes more than four months after Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in February at the outset of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, and six months after Iran was gripped by nationwide protests calling for an end to his government.

While millions of mourners are expected to turn out next week, many Iranians remain deeply dissatisfied with what Ayatollah Khamenei’s reign brought to their country over nearly four decades of authoritarian rule. He oversaw brutal repression, including the imprisonment, torture and killing of dissidents, and presided over widening corruption and the increasing control of much of Iran’s wealth by its security forces.

When it became clear that he had been killed, some in Iran celebrated openly, at great risk to themselves.

Ayatollah Khamenei was not only Iran’s head of state. He also presented himself as an authoritative Shiite Muslim cleric. He had devotees in Iraq and Lebanon, where his portrait is often seen at Shiite rallies, as well as in Pakistan and other countries in the region. » | Yeganeh Torbati | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Vatican Excommunicates Ultraconservative Breakaway Bishops in First Crisis for Pope • FRANCE 24

July 2, 2026 | The Vatican excommunicated six bishops from the ultraconservative Society of St Pius X , while warning that any lay believers who "formally adhere" to the breakaway Catholic group would suffer the same fate. The Vatican decree comes a day after the traditionalist group consecrated four new bishops, openly defying a plea from Pope Leo XIV to desist and exacerbating a rift dating from 1988 when the group earlier consecrated four bishops. Giovanni Siracusa: Sicilian Potato Salad

Apr 11, 2026 | This healthy potato salad is prefect for hot weather.

The first time I ever had a potato salad with mayonnaise was at a friend's house, and his whole family was laughing at me because this is the potato salad I was used to.

Whether you eat it warm, cold, or the next day, it always tastes great. It’s a perfect Mediterranean diet dish on its own, but it’s also incredible with some tuna on top for a high-protein lunch, or served as a side to grilled meat, chicken, or fish.

I like to make this potato salad and keep it in the refrigerator to pick at for a few days.

My grandmother made this all the time and she sometimes added green beans or any fresh vegetables from the garden. So, if you’re tired of the normal potato salad with mayo and want an easy summer salad that actually tastes fresh, this Sicilian classic is for you.

Giovanni Siracusa: Sicilian Orange and Fennel Salad

May 30, 2026 | This Sicilian orange and fennel salad is one of the most iconic recipes in all of southern Italy. You'll find it on every menu and every family table across Sicily year-round. And once you try it, you'll understand why.

Sweet oranges, crisp fennel, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. It sounds simple because it is, and that's exactly the point. No cooking, just fresh ingredients the way they were meant to be eaten.

Growing up, this salad was just part of life. My family in Sicily makes it all the time and it shows up at every gathering and disappears before anything else on the table. It's one of those dishes you only really find in Sicily.

Grab some bread to soak up the juice at the bottom of the plate and you've got yourself a perfect bite.

Russia Hammers Ukraine’s Capital in Deadly Attacks

THE NEW YORK TIMES: At least 18 people were killed in Kyiv, the local authorities said. Ukraine’s president had warned that Moscow was preparing a “massive strike” as Ukrainian forces have hit deeper into Russian territory.

The Russian military blasted Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with waves of ballistic missiles and drones that lasted into Thursday morning, a deadly show of force after weeks of Ukrainian attacks within Russia that have heaped pressure on President Vladimir V. Putin.

At least 18 people were killed and more than 30 injured in the attacks, Ukrainian officials said, as firefighters raced to extinguish blazes in several districts of the capital. Several apartment buildings were partially destroyed and an unknown number of people were trapped in the rubble, according to the local authorities.

The Russian barrage was the latest in the deadliest spring for Ukraine since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022, as Ukrainian strikes prompt Mr. Putin to respond militarily. Ukraine has been bringing the war home to Russia by using long-range drones and cruise missiles to attack fuel facilities and military installations deep inside Russia and in occupied Crimea.

These attacks have caused widespread fuel shortages and have eroded Mr. Putin’s ability to insulate large parts of his country, including Moscow, the capital, from the war.

Ukraine’s strategy on the battlefield rests on forcing the Russian military to pay a heavy price for every mile of land it seizes while raising the economic costs for the Kremlin. Moscow believes it can outlast Kyiv’s outnumbered forces on the front while inflicting such a heavy human and economic toll that it breaks the will of civilians, according to Western military analysts.

In a statement on Thursday, Russia’s defense ministry called the strikes on Kyiv a response to Ukraine’s recent attacks inside Russia.

Many Kyiv residents had been bracing for a large-scale Russian assault in part because about two weeks had passed since the last one, giving Moscow time to stockpile missiles and drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine had warned in recent days that Russia was preparing another “massive strike,” and he urged people to be “especially careful.” Live Updates » | Cassandra Vinograd | Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Young Indonesian Couple Publicly Caned after Kissing on TikTok

THE GUARDIAN: Unmarried man and woman whipped 21 times each because they had violated province’s version of Islamic law

A young couple in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province have been publicly caned after a Sharia court convicted them of violating Islamic law by kissing during a TikTok livestream.

The court ordered the couple, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, to be whipped with a rattan cane 21 times each for kissing without being married. At least 100 people witnessed the caning, carried out by a group of people wearing robes and hoods on a stage in Bustanussalatin City Park in Banda Aceh.

The couple were arrested in April after a livestream from 27 February, in which they kissed in a car in Banda Aceh, went viral and prompted reports to local sharia authorities.

Aceh is the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia that enforces a version of Islamic law. The country’s secular central government granted the province the right to implement religious law in 2006 as part of a peace deal to end a separatist war. » | Associated Press in Banda Aceh | Thursday, July 2, 2026

Trump Suggestion of a Syrian Crackdown on Hezbollah Confounds Many in Mideast

THE NEW YORK TIMES: During peace talks, President Trump repeatedly floated the idea that Syria could help subdue Hezbollah in Lebanon. The proposal revived bitter memories.

When the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon was threatening to unravel the U.S.-Iran peace deal, President Trump repeatedly floated an idea that took many in the region by surprise.

Neighboring Syria, whose relatively new government is no friend to Hezbollah, could help subdue the Iran-backed Lebanese militia.

The proposal revived bitter memories in Lebanon, which the Syrian military occupied for nearly three decades. It also baffled Syrians, whose government has made clear over and over again that it has no interest in meddling in its neighbors’ affairs or entering into more wars.

President Ahmed al-Sharaa reiterated that stance last week, rebuffing the notion that his U.S.-allied government was preparing to intervene militarily in Lebanon. » | Christina Goldbaum and Raja Abdulrahim | Christina Goldbaum reported from Beirut, Lebanon, and Raja Abdulrahim from Amman, Jordan. | Wednesday, July 1, 2026

How the Iran War Ignited a Clash Between Trump and the Saudi Crown Prince

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pressed President Trump earlier to cripple Iran. But as Iran asserted its power, the prince urged a cease-fire, and is now pursuing his security priorities.

This picture is from this NYT article. | President Trump with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia in Washington last year. The two countries have become increasingly at odds over the U.S. war with Iran. | Haiyun Jiang/The New York Times

President Trump and his military commanders were in a bind.

They had announced the start of a new mission to help guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had effectively closed early in the war. U.S. naval and air power would ward off any Iranian attacks during a tentative cease-fire, the commanders said.

But U.S. Central Command was caught by surprise when officials from Saudi Arabia said American forces could not use the kingdom’s air space for the mission, which the Pentagon was calling Project Freedom. The Americans had not consulted the Saudis.

That set off a flurry of tense and urgent phone calls between Washington and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the leader of Saudi Arabia. An outraged Mr. Trump spoke with him on May 4, the first day of the operation, and on the next two days as well, U.S. officials said.

Vice President JD Vance talked to the prince in a separate call, as did Steve Witkoff, the special envoy to the Middle East, and Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law. Marco Rubio, the White House national security adviser, spoke to his counterpart.

But the crown prince stood his ground, fearing that the American plan could reignite war. The Trump administration was forced to shut down Project Freedom less than 48 hours after it had begun.

“They had lost confidence in the administration, and they thought if they let the U.S. use their airspace, they would get hit even harder by Iran,” said Hussein Ibish, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. » | Edward Wong | Edward Wong has reported from Washington on U.S. policy in the Middle East over three administrations.

Crimea Back in Play? Russia Feels Pain of Ukraine Long-range Strikes • FRANCE 24 English

Jun 30, 2026 | A couple of weeks back, we asked if the tide was turning in Ukraine. The short answer: a little, but it's hard to cut through the fog of war. Now, we're beginning to wonder if Crimea could be back in play. Kyiv's new line of longer-range missiles and drones are wreaking havoc on fuel and power supplies. And while Russia continues to inch forward in other frontline flashpoints, the peninsula occupied in 2014 by Vladimir Putin's little green men has never looked so vulnerable.

A Ukrainian offensive still seems like a pipe dream. Instead, is the current pressure a way to force concessions out of a Kremlin forced to admit what's all over Russian social media: that petrol stations across Russia are running on empty because of those long-range strikes? Will Vladimir Putin compromise or double down?

And what do Crimeans themselves want? Most seemed happy to vote yes in a referendum to rejoin a Russia they only left in 1954. More broadly, what consequences for the entire Black Sea region, which since 2022 has alternated between periods of war, disruption and mutually agreed calm to allow both sides to ship goods? The Black Sea is of course shared with Turkey, which hosts next week's timely NATO summit.

The episode explores how Ukraine's democratic transformation, its path toward European Union membership, and the realities of wartime have reshaped the debate over LGBTQ rights.

Jun 27, 2026 | In this video Penn Jillette explores the connection between skepticism, atheism, and shared reality. He argues that proof fosters love by enabling shared understanding, while faith-based beliefs hinder meaningful connection. Jillette also discusses morality, the importance of evidence, and how atheism is often a gradual realization through rational thought.

If you ask me, the whole damn system seems to be based on a scam! The political system, religion, the bloody lot! And how do the powers-that-be achieve this? By encouraging belief in myth and fable. Much of it is achieved subliminally. And most people fall for the crap, often times because they fear death and fear the nothingness which will inevitably follow life. We came from nothing, and we shall return to nothing.

Trump Raked in More than $1bn from Crypto Businesses in 2025, Filing Shows

Donald Trump raked in more than $1bn from his crypto businesses last year, a federal filing released Monday shows, giving a substantial boost to his annual income.

In his second term, the president and his family have heavily invested in digital money and various crypto businesses with Trump announcing at the start of 2025 that he wanted the US to be the “crypto capital of the world”. Trump’s crypto earnings are in addition to profit from his legal settlements, real estate and royalty deals.

Many of the president’s crypto ventures were mere startups when he took the oath of office, but now have eclipsed in revenue much of his vast property portfolio that took decades to accumulate. This rise has been fueled by billionaire investors and Trump’s move to quash a federal crackdown on the industry. » | Dara Kerr and agencies | Wednesday, July 1, 2026

How can Americans stand idly by whilst this criminal enriches himself by using the White House and the Office of the Presidency as a private business venture and whilst he also raids the US treasury of billions in US tax revenues? Americans are clearly a very weak people.

What is also very bemusing is that there are so many thick Americans who actually believe that this crook has been sent to them by God to save their beloved dysfunctional hellhole! Go figure! — © Mark Alexander

The Most Powerful Man in the US You've Never Voted For | Fault Lines Documentary

Jun 11, 2026 | Shortly after Alex Pretti was killed by immigration agents in Minneapolis during Operation Metro Surge, Stephen Miller publicly labelled him a domestic terrorist. The statement outraged Minnesotans and Americans across the country who were still mourning the death of Renee Good, who had been killed just weeks earlier during the same immigration enforcement operation.

The deaths triggered a series of dismissals and resignations across multiple agencies. But accountability has yet to reach Stephen Miller, the architect of Operation Metro Surge and at least nine other immigration enforcement operations that deployed Border Patrol and ICE agents onto the streets of democratically run cities nationwide.

In Stephen Miller’s War, Fault Lines investigates why Miller directed the Department of Homeland Security to carry out these operations and examines why he has not been held accountable for the deaths and alleged abuses that occurred under his leadership.

The film traces Miller’s rise from right-wing provocateur to one of the most influential figures in the administration. Through an examination of Homeland Security operations in Democratic-led cities, Stephen Miller’s War explores his role in using immigration enforcement as a tool to expand executive power and advance what critics describe as a new era of authoritarian governance in the United States.
