Apr 20, 2022 • The far-right candidate has reiterated her pledge to ban headscarves in public spaces, calling them a “symbol of women’s submission”.
“I don’t attack a religion, Islam, which has every right to be in France,” she says. “The real issue is Islamist terrorism. We must pass legislation against the Islamist ideology that is attacking the very foundations of our Republic.”
“I’m not in favour of banning religious symbols in public. Secularism is a freedom,” Macron says. If Le Pen were to implement such a measure, “France, the cradle of the Enlightenment, would be the first country in the world to ban religious symbols in public.”

It seems to be working. “I think she’s full of good ideas,” Cyrielle Bernard, a 19-year-old who lives in this picturesque Burgundy town, told me one afternoon last week, chatting in the tobacconist shop where she works. Of all the candidates, she said, “I think she’s the most logical.”
President Emmanuel Macron won in Semur-en-Auxois in the first round of voting this month, but Ms. Le Pen took the larger Burgundy Franche-Comté region, with 27 percent of the vote over Mr. Macron’s 26 percent. Ms. Le Pen’s success comes from casting herself as the defender of the countryside and the working class, focusing on cost-of-living issues and defending social protections. She has also been helped by an image makeover in which she opened up about raising her children as a single mother and now combines tough talk on immigration with social media posts about her cats.
The stigma she has long carried in mainstream politics has been quickly wearing off, and people are supporting her more openly than ever before.
As I drove around rural Burgundy after the first round of voting this month, I came away with a strong sense that while Mr. Macron may well defeat her in the second round this Sunday, in many ways, Ms. Len Pen has already won. In the first round, she put Mr. Macron on the defensive and convinced almost a quarter of voters that she has their best interests at heart. Apr 21, 2022 • Kuba wird von einer Wirtschaftskrise heimgesucht, die Touristen bleiben aus wegen Covid, das Land ist isoliert durch die US-Sanktionen und doch gelang es ihnen, so lautet die offizielle Lesart, nicht nur die Pandemie auf der Insel in den Griff zu bekommen – sie halfen danach auch noch zahlreichen anderen Ländern, Covid-19 zu besiegen.
Seit 2020 entsandten sie 3.000 medizinische Fachkräfte in 42 Länder, darunter Mexiko, Andorra, Südafrika, Italien, Kuwait und Frankreich, um deren medizinische Teams zu unterstützen. Diese Politik der Zusammenarbeit ist seit über 50 Jahren eine der Stärken der kubanischen Diplomatie. Sie wurde von Fidel Castro erfunden und ist noch immer der Stolz seiner Nachfolger. Aber Kritiker stellen fest, dass die den Gaststaaten in Rechnung gestellten Missionen inzwischen zum größten Einnahmeposten im kubanischen Außenhandel geworden sind – 10 Milliarden Dollar im Jahr 2019, laut Welthandelsorganisation - und dass der Staat nicht mit ideologischem Druck spart, um die begeisterte, obligatorische und freiwillige Unterstützung der Ärzte zu erhalten. La Russie sanctionne 29 Américains, dont Mark Zuckerberg et Kamala Harris

La Russie a interdit jeudi 21 avril l'entrée sur son territoire à 29 personnalités américaines, dont le dirigeant de Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, et la vice-présidente américaine, Kamala Harris, en réaction aux sanctions contre Moscou liées à l'Ukraine.
En outre, 61 personnalités canadiennes, pour la plupart des responsables gouvernementaux ou militaires, sont également visées par cette mesure. Sophie Wilmès: Belgian Foreign Minister Resigns to Care for Sick Husband
BBC: Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès says she will temporarily step down to care for her husband, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer.
Ms Wilmès, who also serves as deputy prime minister, will take leave until "the end of the summer", when her family will reassess the situation.
She says she made the move "in perfect consultation with the prime minister".
In a statement, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said Ms Wilmès's choice "commands the greatest respect".
Mr De Croo added that the minister would not officially resign from government and that her powers would, instead, be temporarily transferred to other ministers by "a royal decree".
Ms Wilmès, who served as prime minister between 2019 and 2020, married her Australian husband Chris Stone in 2009.

Die Briten, Amerikaner und Russen betrachten diese Kinder als Privatangelegenheit der Deutschen, nicht jedoch die Franzosen. Sie sehen in den Kindern deutscher Mütter und französischer Soldaten einen "nationalen Schatz", der heimgeholt werden muss. Seit Jahrzehnten stagniert die Bevölkerung in Frankreich. Mit den Besatzungskindern hoffen Bevölkerungsexperten und Politiker, die demographische Entwicklung wieder ankurbeln zu können. Auf höchster Ebene wird ein ehrgeiziges grenzübergreifendes Adoptionsprogramm aufgelegt. Viele Mütter willigen ein. Sie befinden sich meist in einer prekären Lage, oftmals von der Familie verstoßen und ohne Einkommen. BBC: A major Conservative Party donor was listed as a director of a company secretly owned by a Russian oligarch close to President Putin.
The BBC has seen a document dated 2006 and signed "Lubov Golubeva", the maiden name of Lubov Chernukhin, a Tory donor.
Mrs Chernukhin says she "does not recall consenting in writing" to being a director of Suleiman Kerimov's firm.
Mr Kerimov, now sanctioned, previously denied any connection with Mrs Chernukhin.
Papers seen by the BBC appear to show that Mrs Chernukhin, then Lubov Golubeva, was appointed a director of offshore company Radlett Estates Limited, in 2005 - following its acquisition of a substantial property, 1 Radlett Place, in north London.
Another firm - Swiru Holding AG - was the sole shareholder of Radlett Estates. The directors of Radlett Estates were Swiss businessman Alexander Studhalter and Suleiman Kerimov's nephew, Nariman Gadzhiev.

Viele Menschen fühlen sich zu Hause nicht sicher. Doch andere Wohnungen gibt es für sie praktisch nicht. Die Stadt ist durch jahrzehntelange Vernachlässigung zum Katastrophengebiet geworden.
Kaouther Ben Mohamed kann sich noch genau daran erinnern, wie im November 2018 die zwei Häuser im Zentrum von Marseille eingestürzt sind und acht Menschen unter sich begraben haben. Ihre Tante hat nebenan gewohnt und war stundenlang unauffindbar. Seitdem ist sie zum Sprachrohr derjenigen geworden, die hier in unwürdigen Verhältnissen wohnen.
Anastasia Baik ist eine davon. An zwei Stellen ihrer Wohnung ist die Decke eingestürzt. „In der Nacht habe ich Angst, dass uns die Balken auf den Kopf stürzen“, sagt sie, „aber die Experten der Stadt meinen, es gebe Schlimmeres.“ Oder Yasmine Khelifi. Sie war schwanger, als sie vor zwei Jahren ihre einsturzgefährdete Wohnung Hals über Kopf verlassen musste. Seither wohnt sie mit ihrer Familie in einer 2-Zimmer-Wohnung in einem Aparthotel. Doch nun droht ihr die Kündigung. „Wenn die ernst machen, lande ich mit meinen Kindern auf der Straße“, fürchtet sie.
Es sind nur zwei Beispiele von vielen, die Kaouther Ben Mohamed zum Verzweifeln bringen.
„Jahrzehntelang hat sich niemand für die Menschen im Zentrum interessiert. Erst das Unglück vor drei Jahren hat alle wachgerüttelt“, stellt sie fest. Doch es geht ihr viel zu langsam voran. Patrick Amico ist als stellvertretender Bürgermeister seit anderthalb Jahren zuständig für den Kampf gegen unwürdigen Wohnraum. „Dieses Problem ist unfassbar groß“, sagt er, „wir werden viele, viele Jahre brauchen, um es zu lösen.“ Seine größte Sorge: dass noch einmal ein Wohnhaus einstürzt. Ausschließen kann er es nicht. Immerhin greift jetzt sogar Präsident Emmanuel Macron ein, mit einem Hilfsplan für die Stadt.

Evgeny Lebedev’s nomination for a peerage was paused after advice from MI5 and was only ultimately approved with a letter advising his appointment would be controversial, the chair of House of Lords appointments commission has told MPs.
Giving evidence on Wednesday morning, Lord Bew said that MI5 had raised security concerns when the Evening Standard owner was put forward for a peerage by Downing Street in March 2020 – which prompted “a protracted period” of review.
Bew did not spell out what those concerns were to MPs on the public administration and constitutional affairs committee, but it is understood that the agencies had initially flagged up that Lebedev’s father, Alexander, was a former KGB agent, prompting the commission to press for further details.

A court has formally approved the extradition of Julian Assange to the US on espionage charges, in what will ultimately be a decision for the UK home secretary, Priti Patel.
The Wikileaks co-founder, who has the right of appeal, appeared by videolink during the Westminster magistrates court hearing, which one of his barristers described as a “brief but significant moment in the case”.
Mark Summers QC, for Assange, told the chief magistrate that he had no option but to send the case to the home secretary. It was not open, at this point, for Assange’s team to raise fresh evidence but there had been “fresh developments”, he added.

Royal British Legion Apologises for Past LGBTQ+ Discrimination

The Royal British Legion has apologised for its historical refusal to acknowledge the sacrifices of LGBTQ+ British military personnel.
For decades, campaigners have accused the organisation of homophobia, claiming it sought to erase LGBTQ+ people’s contributions to British war efforts and to actively oppose queer remembrance efforts. Now, in a letter seen exclusively by the Guardian, the organisation has tried to make amends.
The note came in response to correspondence from the human rights activist Peter Tatchell, who reminded the Royal British Legion (RBL) late last year that he had written to it back in 2007 to complain about the same stance. But, he said, it had declined even to answer.

Rwanda Asylum Seeker Policy: Ex-PM Theresa May Criticises Government Plan
BBC: Former prime minister Theresa May has criticised the government's plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda.
Mrs May told the Commons she did not support the policy due to her concerns over whether it met standards on "legality, practicality and efficacy".
Home Secretary Priti Patel said the scheme would be "a major blow to people smugglers" and would stop people dying on dangerous routes to the UK.
The policy has been criticised by charities and opposition parties.
Mrs May, who also served as home secretary overseeing the UK's immigration policy between 2010 and 2016, asked if the trial scheme would lead to an increase in trafficking of women and children - after reports that only single men making illegal crossings to the UK would be sent to Rwanda.
Under the scheme - announced last week - people deemed to have entered the UK unlawfully will be flown to the African country, where they would be processed, and if successful, would have long-term accommodation in the African country.
Responding to a statement on migration by Ms Patel, Mrs May said: "From what I have heard and seen so far of this policy, I do not support the removal to Rwanda policy on the grounds of legality, practicality and efficacy.

La mâchoire russe se referme sur le Donbass et déploie sa puissance de feu sur des dizaines de villages au nord du Donbass. Le président ukrainien, Volodymyr Zelensky, l’a confirmé lundi 18 avril : « Nous pouvons maintenant affirmer que les troupes russes ont commencé la bataille pour le Donbass. Une très grande partie de l’armée russe est désormais consacrée à cette offensive », a-t-il assuré dans un discours retransmis sur Telegram. « La deuxième phase de la guerre a commencé », a aussi déclaré son chef de cabinet, Andriy Yermak. Jedes Jahr brennen in Nordirland Scheiterhaufen. Verbrannt werden irische Fahnen, Plakate von pro-irischen Parteien und andere Symbole der Katholiken. Leanne Abernethy findet das auch in Ordnung. Sie arbeitet für eine NGO und hofft, dass es in der Gegend rund um Ballymoney am 11. Juli, dem Abend vor dem „Orangemen’s Day“, zu keinen größeren Unruhen kommt. „Wir wollen vor allem verhindern, dass auf den Straßen randaliert wird.“

Jedes Jahr brennen in Nordirland Scheiterhaufen. Verbrannt werden irische Fahnen, Plakate von pro-irischen Parteien und andere Symbole der Katholiken. Leanne Abernethy findet das auch in Ordnung. Sie arbeitet für eine NGO und hofft, dass es in der Gegend rund um Ballymoney am 11. Juli, dem Abend vor dem „Orangemen’s Day“, zu keinen größeren Unruhen kommt. „Wir wollen vor allem verhindern, dass auf den Straßen randaliert wird.“
Dass dieses Fahnenverbrennen Hass schürt, lässt sie nicht gelten. Das habe lange Tradition und sei Teil der Kultur der Loyalisten. Ginge es nach ihr, könnten ruhig auch Europa-Fahnen mit verbrannt werden, denn weder Irland noch die Europäische Union hätten das Recht, den Nordiren irgendetwas vorzuschreiben.
Kris baut seit Monaten an einem Scheiterhaufen. 20 Meter hoch sind die Paletten, dazwischen hunderte Autoreifen. Das Feuer, das anlässlich der Schlacht am Boyene entzündet wird, als Wilhelm der III. die Katholiken besiegte, soll endlich wieder so groß werden, wie vor der Corona-Pandemie. Kris lebt in Coleraine. Hier sind die meisten Protestanten, und viele von ihnen sind enttäuscht, dass das Vereinigte Königreich keinen „harten Brexit“ vollzogen hat. Statt der harten Grenze zu Irland gibt es Kontrollen in der Irischen See, also zum britischen Festland.
Die meisten hier sind unmittelbar vom Konflikt zwischen Protestanten und Katholiken betroffen, haben Opfer der „Troubles“ im engsten Familienkreis zu beklagen.
