Boris Johnson’s Farewell Speech as UK Prime Minister – BBC News

Boris Johnson has given his final speech as the UK’s prime minister before Liz Truss takes over the role.

In a televised address outside Downing St, the outgoing prime minister said "I am like one of those booster rockets that has fulfilled its function".

He and his successor Liz Truss will now travel to Balmoral in Scotland where Johnson will offer his resignation to the Queen who will then appoint Truss as the new PM.

George Monbiot: New UK PM Liz Truss Has "Extreme Neoliberal" Anti-Labor, Anti-Environment Record

Sep 6, 2022 The United Kingdom's Conservative Party has voted for Liz Truss to become its new leader, replacing Boris Johnson and making her Britain's next prime minister. Truss served as foreign secretary under Johnson and has a record of "extreme neoliberal policies," says British journalist George Monbiot. These include supporting tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulating the fossil fuel industry and refusing to regulate agricultural pollution. Monbiot also warns Truss will undermine the country's model public health system and labor rights for organizing workers.

Camelot Drops UK National Lottery Legal Challenge

THE GUARDIAN: Outgoing operator appealed against decision to award licence to its rival Allwyn from February 2024

Camelot has dropped its appeal against a legal ruling over the handover of its licence to operate the UK’s national lottery to its rival Allwyn.

Camelot, which has run the national lottery since it was launched in 1994, said it had withdrawn its legal challenge that would have resulted in it going to the court of appeal next week. It added that it would “now cooperate with Allwyn and the Gambling Commission to facilitate an orderly transition to the fourth licence”.

This means that Allwyn, owned by the billionaire Czech entrepreneur Karel Komárek, who made his fortune in sectors including oil and gas, moves a step closer to running the lottery from February 2024.

Camelot decided not to proceed with the appeal after it emerged that more than £1bn for good causes could be lost over its legal action if it delayed the handover of the £6.4bn contract, as reported by the Observer. » | Julia Kollewe | Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Diana: The Night She Died | Conspiracy Documentary | Real Stories | Reupload

After the death of Diana Princess of Wales, conspiracy theories filled the headlines. As so many of the conspiracy theories are absurd, many simple questions about the fatal night of August 31st have never been asked. By the end not only Princess Diana but also Dodi Al Fayed and the driver Henri Paul were dead.

First, police blamed the paparazzi for causing the accident. They had been "buzzing round the car like flies." Then 48 hours later they blamed the driver of the Mercedes, Henri Paul. He was said to be three times over the drink limit. This compelling program seeks to answer the many questions overlooked by the enquiry and to uncover what really happened the night Diana died.

Now She Will Be Prime Minister

MIRROR: The new Prime Minister inherits an economy that is juddering towards recession, a hike in energy bills and businesses on the brink of bankruptcy, writes Assistant Editor Jason Beattie

When Liz Truss enters Downing Street, she will be handed a in-tray overflowing with problems.

Top of the list is the looming hike in energy bills that threaten to leave more families in destitution and more businesses on the brink of bankruptcy.

The new Prime Minister also inherits an economy that is juddering towards recession, soaring inflation and a wages crisis.

As she surveys the country she now leads she will also see the damage caused by more than a decade of Tory government - an administration she has played a central role in.

Britain has not looked so broken since the 1970s.

The public services are crumbling, there is a shortage of affordable housing and our infrastructure is in need of urgent repair.

Brexit remains unresolved, exports have slumped and trust in politics has hit rock bottom.

Britain’s Next Prime Minister Is Still in Thrall to the Empire

OPINION : GUEST ESSAY

THE NEW YORK TIMES: LONDON — “Do we confront this moment with honesty,” asked Rishi Sunak, one of the two candidates running to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister of Britain, “or do we tell ourselves comforting fairy tales?”

The answer, from the Conservative Party membership, at least, is fairy tales. On Monday, the members elected Liz Truss as their new leader and the next prime minister. In a campaign built around a belief in the miraculous power of tax cuts, Ms. Truss presented herself as the economic savior of a country heading into a winter of crisis. In the face of sky-high inflation and widespread economic misery, it’s a fantastical proposition.

But fairy tales don’t come out of nowhere. For her zealous commitment to privatization, deregulation and tax-cutting, many see Ms. Truss as a would-be second coming of Margaret Thatcher. Sealed by sartorial mimicry, there’s something in the comparison. Yet Ms. Truss’s most apt antecedent, in fact, is someone who had already left the Conservative Party under a cloud of controversy by the time Thatcher came to lead it: Enoch Powell.

Largely known for his bitterly racist denunciation of immigration, Powell has a claim to being Britain’s most influential postwar politician. That’s chiefly because, in an era of decolonization, he sketched out a route for Britain to maintain its global dominance. Fashioned in the dying of the imperial light, that roster of policies — preferential terms of global trade achieved through hard-line anti-migrant policies, shrinking the state, undermining organized labor and fostering finance — forms the basis of Ms. Truss’s politics today. The British Empire may have all but ended 60 years ago, but the country’s next prime minister is still in thrall to its legacy. » | Kojo Koram * | Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Thirty-five Civilians Killed in Convoy Blast in Burkina Faso

At least 35 civilians have been killed and 37 wounded when a convoy carrying supplies in Burkina Faso’s jihadist-hit north struck an improvised explosive device, the governor of the Sahel region has said.

The landlocked African state is in the grip of a seven-year insurgency that has claimed more than 2,000 lives and forced 1.9 million people to leave their homes.

Monday’s incident took place as the military-led convoy was supplying towns in the restive north on a road between Bourzanga to Djibo, according to a statement by Sahel region governor Rodolphe Sorgo.

“One of the vehicles carrying civilians hit an improvised explosive device. The provisional toll is 35 dead and 37 injured, all civilians,” it said. » | Agence France-Presse | Tuesday, September 6, 2022

FRANCE 24: She is only the third woman in history to become British prime minister, following in the footsteps of her Conservative predecessors Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. Who is 47-year-old Liz Truss and how did she manage to overtake her rival Rishi Sunak in the race to succeed Boris Johnson? FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at the new occupant of 10 Downing Street.

With 57.4 percent of the vote in the Conservative Party leadership contest , Truss can savour a comfortable victory over ex-chancellor Sunak. The outgoing foreign secretary's success is all the more satisfying because her challenger was initially the bookmakers' favourite to be the next prime minister. Truss's triumph can be explained by some strategic moves on her part that have played to the party faithful, but also by mishaps in the leadership campaign of her rival.

When the scandal-plagued Johnson resigned as prime minister in July, Truss was by no means a shoo-in to replace him. She arguably received a boost when Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, seen as a likely frontrunner, announced he would not be standing. Once the field was whittled down to two candidates by Conservative MPs, Sunak was in the lead. The 42-year-old was seen as a political heavyweight who steered the British economy through the Covid-19 pandemic as finance minister. » | Caroline Clarkson | Monday, September 5, 2022

Was schon im 18.

Many years ago, I flew down to the South of France, to a language school in Hyères to improve my French. I spent several weeks there on two separate occasions. Each time, I stayed with a delightful French married couple.

One day, my host’s wife was thinking of where I should do some sightseeing. She recommended I take a boat trip over to this island for the day. Being more than a little shy at that time, I was reluctant to go there, especially being alone; however, I plucked the courage and went.

The weather was glorious and very hot; the island was magnificent. I shan’t go into detail, but I spent one of the finest days of my life there. It was an extremely liberating experience. In fact, the following year, I went down to the same school and to the same family to continue my studies; naturally, I went over to the island again. That day, too, was equally sublime.

The French really know how to live life to the fullest. Little wonder we get such marvelous expressions as joie de vivre and savoir vivre from the French. People in the Anglosphere are so puritanical and boring by comparison with the fun-loving French.

Ukraine War: Russia Wants to Destroy Europeans' Normal Life, Zelensky Warns

EPA

BBC: Russia wants to destroy the normal life of every European citizen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

"It is trying to attack with poverty and political chaos where it cannot yet attack with missiles," Mr Zelensky said in his regular address on Saturday.

He was speaking hours after Russia said that its main gas pipeline to Europe would not reopen as planned.

Europe accused Russia of using its gas supplies to blackmail Europe amid the Ukraine conflict, which Moscow denies.

Energy prices have soared since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February and scarce supplies could push up costs even further.

There are growing fears families in the EU will be unable to afford the cost of heating this winter.

Governments across the continent are contemplating what measures to take to alleviate the crisis.

Good Causes Could Lose £1bn as Camelot Sues over ‘Unlawful’ National Lottery Licence

THE OBSERVER: UK Lotto operator challenges the Gambling Commission’s decision to award £6.4bn contract to its rival, Allwyn

More than £1bn for good causes could be lost over a legal action alleging the new licence to run the national lottery was awarded unlawfully, according to court filings seen by the Observer.

Camelot, which operated the national lottery for nearly three decades, is seeking to reverse the decision to hand the licence to its rival Allwyn. It will go to court later this month in an appeal to delay the handover of the £6.4bn contract. The case threatens to embroil the lottery in its biggest controversy since it was launched in 1994 – and there is even a risk the lottery will be suspended for the first time in its history.

The Gambling Commission warns in a legal submission obtained by the Observer: “In the worst scenario, there will be a gap in service between the expiry of the third licence on 31 January 2024 and the commencement of the fourth licence. The commission anticipates there will be an overall shortfall of payment to good causes of at least £1bn and, in the case of an interregnum, considerably more.’ » | Jon Ungoed-Thomas | Sunday, September 4, 2022

Liz Truss Says It Is Fair to Prioritise Tax Cuts That Benefit High Earners More

THE GUARDIAN: Prospective PM attacks ‘lens of redistribution’ after being told that national insurance cut will help rich 250 times more than poorest

It is fair to prioritise tax cuts that benefit the highest earners 250 times more than the poorest, Liz Truss has said, insisting it is wrong to view all economic policy through the “lens of redistribution”.

In her most thorough interview in the Conservative leadership campaign, a day before she is widely expected to be declared the winner, Truss said she would provide immediate help over energy bills, but declined to say what.

v “What I can say is that if I’m elected as prime minister, within one week I will make sure there is an announcement on how we are going to deal with the issue of energy bills, and of long-term supply, to put this country on the right footing for winter,” Truss told BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show.

“I understand that people are struggling, that businesses are also concerned about their energy bills and the impact it could have on their future. So what I want to reassure people is, I will act.”

But under repeated questioning, Truss refused to give any details, saying she would only set this out if she defeated Rishi Sunak to become Tory leader on Monday. She would then take over from Boris Johnson as prime minister the next day.

Truss did, however, insist she would not be deflected from her prioritisation of tax cuts, and her efforts to cut regulation, saying it was more important to grow the economy than to try to reduce economic inequalities.

Shown calculations setting out that her planned reversal of a recent rise in national insurance would benefit top earners by around £1,800 a year, and the lowest earner by about £7, and asked if this was fair, Truss said: “Yes, it is fair.”

She said: “The people at the top of the income distribution pay more tax, so inevitably when you cut taxes, you tend to benefit people who are more likely to pay tax. » | Peter Walker, Political correspondent | Sunday, September 4, 2022

"That bloody woman" was used to refer to Margaret Thatcher; but it applies equally to Liz Truss, perhaps even more so. Liz Truss—should it be Liz O'Leary?—is a hard-boiled, heartless woman who clearly wishes to emulate Thatcher, but will fail, I believe. At least Thatcher had stature and charisma; Truss has neither of these. She is also not well-schooled in matters of Christianity. Were she to be so, she would be familiar with this verse from Matthew:
“For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.” – Matthew 13: 12 (The Bible: King James Version)

Hasta La Vista, Baby: The Rise and Fall of Boris Johnson - BBC News

Sep 2, 2022 We are coming to the end of one of the most singular post war Premierships - and the demise of a Prime Minister who entered No10 just over three years ago, saying his mission was to restore Britain's faith in itself.

The following December, Boris Johnson won the biggest Conservative victory since Margaret Thatcher swept to power in 1987. Newsnight reflects on the recent meteoric rise, and spectacular fall of the man.

Was he entirely the architect of his own misfortune, or is that wide of the mark? The chronicler of Prime Ministers, Michael Cockerell, famously charted Boris Johnson's journey to the top in a landmark documentary almost a decade ago.

As we enter the final days of the Johnson era Newsnight asked him to update the story and assess the prime minister's fall and legacy.

Obituary: Mikhail S. Gorbachev, Reformist Soviet Leader, Is Dead at 91

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Adopting principles of glasnost and perestroika, he weighed the legacy of seven decades of Communist rule and set a new course, presiding over the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the U.S.S.R.

Mikhail S. Gorbachev had a profound effect on his time: In little more than six tumultuous years, he lifted the Iron Curtain, transforming the map of Europe and the political climate of the world. | Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times

Mikhail S. Gorbachev, whose rise to power in the Soviet Union set in motion a series of revolutionary changes that transformed the map of Europe and ended the Cold War that had threatened the world with nuclear annihilation, has died in Moscow. He was 91.

His death was announced on Tuesday by Russia’s state news agencies, citing the city’s central clinical hospital. The reports said he had died after an unspecified “long and grave illness.”

Few leaders in the 20th century, indeed in any century, have had such a profound effect on their time. In little more than six tumultuous years, Mr. Gorbachev lifted the Iron Curtain, decisively altering the political climate of the world. At home he promised and delivered greater openness as he set out to restructure his country’s society and faltering economy. It was not his intention to liquidate the Soviet empire, but within five years of coming to power he had presided over the dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. He ended the Soviet debacle in Afghanistan and, in an extraordinary five months in 1989, stood by as the Communist system imploded from the Baltics to the Balkans in countries already weakened by widespread corruption and moribund economies.

For this he was hounded from office by hard-line Communist plotters and disappointed liberals alike, the first group fearing that he would destroy the old system and the other worried that he would not.

It was abroad that he was hailed as heroic. To George F. Kennan, the distinguished American diplomat and Sovietologist, Mr. Gorbachev was “a miracle,” a man who saw the world as it was, unblinkered by Soviet ideology.

But to many inside Russia, the upheaval Mr. Gorbachev had wrought was a disaster. President Vladimir V. Putin called the collapse of the Soviet Union the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.” For Mr. Putin — and his fellow K.G.B. veterans who now form the inner circle of power in Russia — the end of the U.S.S.R. was a moment of shame and defeat that the invasion of Ukraine this year was meant to help undo. » | Marilyn Berger | Tuesday, August 30, 2022

This is how Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union’s first and final president, vividly appears in Vitaly Mansky’s documentary Gorbachev. Heaven. This was also my experience several years ago when I visited Gorbachev in his foundation’s empty offices. This stark, poignant impression of Mikhail Sergeevich, who died last week at 91, will forever stay with me.

I recall two other Gorbachevs. The first I saw on TV in my native Bulgaria in 1985. I was a 20-year-old studying philosophy at Sofia University and Gorbachev had just been elected general secretary of the Communist party of the Soviet Union. His arrival to power, not to mention his opening policy gambits, was as surprising as snow in July. The very fact that the Soviet nomenklatura elected somebody who was younger than 70 and able to finish a sentence was a miracle. Even more supernatural was the sense of an opening that he brought – an infectious feeling that something impossible only yesterday was possible today and that even more might happen tomorrow. » | Ivan Krastev * | Sunday, September 4, 2022

Sep 3, 2022 Hundreds of people have paid their respects at the funeral of the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin cited a busy "work schedule" as a reason for him missing the event at the House of Unions on Saturday.

Liberal politician Grigory Yavlinsky said: "These people have come to Gorbachev to thank him, to say 'Thank you Mr Gorbachev, you gave us a chance.'"

Michael Lambert: Could the UK Economy Collapse?

Sep 3, 2022 The UK economy could collapse very soon if urgent measures are not taken. Climate change, clearly the biggest threat which mankind has ever faced is causing massive disruption of food supplies as a result of drought and flooding.

Vladimir Putin's crazy and irrational behaviour threatens us all, including his own economy. The UK has been ruled by a dishonest, incompetent and self-obsessed prime minister and a second-rate government and has presided over an extensive decline in standards.

Brexit has so weakened the UK economy that we are forecast to be the 19th slowest-growing economy in the G20 next year.

The new prime minister, who is expected to be Liz Truss, has given no indication of how she will solve any of our problems other than by cutting taxes.

Electricity prices have risen so much that many householders will be unable to pay. Businesses which are not protected by any price cap are seeing electricity prices increasing so much that many will simply be forced to close.

The stress of being unable to cope with the rising cost of living is likely to lead to mental health problems for many. Others are likely to resort to crime in order to survive and, given the extremely low possibility of ever being apprehended, may well be seen as the only solution for many to survive.

» | Volker Pabst, Istanbul | Freitag, 2. September 2022

More Life-decoding the Secret of Aging | DW Documentary

May 28, 2022 Can the aging process be reversed - or even halted, altogether? If we manage to decode this final mystery of our human biology, we might soon be able to eradicate age-related illnesses like cancer, dementia and heart problems.

The race to invent the miracle pill is well underway. Today, international researchers are getting astonishingly close to realizing humanity’s dream of immortality.

The hunt for immortality gained traction with the discovery of Costa Rica’s so-called "Blue Zone,” by Luis Rosero-Bixby. In the "Blue Zone,” on the Nicoya Peninsular, he found a remarkable number of centenarians. Here, male life expectancy is the highest in the world. Their healthy lifestyle is one factor, but the promise of longevity is probably also because their telomeres - sections of DNA found at the end of chromosomes - are longer than those of the average person.

It’s a field of research currently being explored by Maria Blasco in Madrid. But this is just one of many possible factors influencing the process of aging. Senescent cells may also play a key role. Also known as "zombie cells”, these attack our body in old age and flood it with alarm signals until, at some point, we collapse under their weight. That’s a theory proposed by another researcher in Spain, Manuel Serrano.

A billion-dollar industry is already knocking impatiently at the lab doors. The first to market the miracle pill is guaranteed incredible wealth. That’s why investors are sponsoring young bio-startups in Hong Kong. Keen not be left out, US Big Tech is vying for the world’s best scientists. Alex Zhavoronkov has secured a slice of that pie, with a cash injection of more than 250 million dollars for his company’s work on aging research.

Whereas some pioneers’ visions burst like bubbles, others rush to get other, rather more dubious products onto the market. But their efficacy is now measurable. The epigenetic clock devised by Steve Horvath can measure our biological age, regardless of our actual age in years.

With his research on the thymus gland, California’s Greg Fahy managed to not only decelerate the aging process, but reverse it. His initial study on humans showed that a particular drug cocktail took an average two-and-a-half years off their age.

Young biohackers like Nina Khera from Boston want everyone to benefit from this research. Together with friends, she’s working on the "epigenetic clock for all”.

But while we’re busy trying to counter the aging process and all the illnesses it entails, fundamental questions arise: Should we be messing with nature like this? Are we about to overwhelm the planet with more and more people? Criminal biologist Mark Benecke in Cologne says that these questions are coming far too late.

Crowds lined up in Moscow to see the former president lying in state at Moscow's Hall of Columns. But he is not being given a full state funeral usually held for former leaders. Dr Harriet Fraad: Capitalism Hits Home: Roe v Wade Overturned - How Did We Get Here?

IJul 7, 2022 In this episode of ‘Capitalism Hits Home’, Dr Fraad looks at the recent dramatic US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade. She argues that all of the SCOTUS decisions for 2022 share a common purpose. First, they help to create a capitalist authoritarian state enforced by unaccountable police. Secondly, they divide the mass of people. They antagonize divisions between people and fuel culture wars. The goal is to create hierarchical and hostile divisions that keep Americans from uniting as an employee class and winning.

EU Warns Next PM Unilateral Action on Brexit Deal Is of ‘Great Concern’

THE GUARDIAN: European Commission vice-president, Maroš Šefčovič, says it is ‘legally and politically inconceivable’

The EU has warned the incoming British prime minister, likely to be Liz Truss, that any unilateral action to scrap part of the Brexit deal is legally and politically of “great concern” across the continent.

The warning by the European Commission vice-president, Maroš Šefčovič, comes just days before the new prime minister is expected to confirm they will press ahead with new laws to dismantle the arrangements for Northern Ireland.

Truss and Sunak have both committed to carrying through with the Northern Ireland protocol bill in their leadership campaigns, despite the threat of a retaliatory trade war with the EU.

“The unilateral action is naturally of great concern,” Šefčovič told an audience that included invited ministers from the British and Irish governments. » | Lisa O'Carroll, Brexit correspondent | Friday, September 2, 2022

The Economist: Will Trump Be President Again?

Aug 30, 2022 Despite losing in 2020, Donald Trump has managed to strengthen his grip on the Republican Party. Will he run again for president—and if so, could he win?

Historian of Radical Right: Biden Is Correct, Trump Poses Existential Threat to Future of Democracy

Sep 2, 2022 In a primetime address Thursday, President Biden warned Donald Trump and his radical supporters are threatening the foundations of the republic. Biden said, "Too much of what's happening in our country today is not normal," and that MAGA Republicans present a "clear and present danger to our democracy," referring to Trump's campaign slogan of "Make America Great Again." We speak with Nancy MacLean, author and Duke University historian, who says Biden's speech was a "wake-up call" for the nation and mainstream media. "He was absolutely right, in my opinion, that the Trump wing of the party and the MAGA Republicans have jumped the rails of constitutional democracy, of the factual universe and of representative democracy."

Biden Warns That American Values Are Under Assault by Trump-Led Extremism

THE NEW YORK TIMES: PHILADELPHIA — President Biden traveled to Independence Hall on Thursday to warn that America's democratic values are under assault by forces of extremism loyal to former President Donald J. Trump, using a prime-time address to define the midterm elections as a “battle for the soul of this nation.”

In a 24-minute speech, Mr. Biden blamed his predecessor for stoking a movement filled with election deniers and people calling for political violence. He went out of his way to declare that not all Republicans embrace extremism, however, and he said that defending democracy would require rejecting Mr. Trump and his ideology in elections this fall.

“Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic,” Mr. Biden said, flanked by Marine guards.

“But there’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans,” he added. “And that is a threat to this country.” » | Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Michael D. Shear | Wednesday, September 1, 2022

Corona, lack of young people and now the high energy prices. The last traditional bakery in Heppenheim has to close. The traditional bakery of the Kaufmann family has been on the corner of Mozartstrasse and Gerhart-Hauptmann-Strasse in Weststadt since 1903. And now it's the end of December. "Unfortunately, the high energy prices and material costs are forcing us to do this!" says owner Willi Kaufmann. And so the Heppenheim bakery is not the only bakery in Hesse that has to close.
