Afghans with Ties to U.S. Who Could Not Get Out Now Live in Fear
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Thousands did not make it onto U.S. military evacuation flights. Many of them are now in hiding, worried for their safety and their future.
Armed Taliban militants were looking for Shah. They knew he worked as an interpreter for the United States government, and came to his provincial home at night. “Someone inside worked for the U.S. Army!” they shouted, threatening to shoot down the door.
Shah had already left for Kabul, where he is now in hiding. But he believes he is a hunted man. “I’m not feeling safe here anymore,” said Shah, whose application for a special immigrant visa to the United States is still in the works.
“The Taliban say they are not taking revenge, and they are forgiving everybody,” he said. “But I can’t believe them. Why did they come to my house looking for me?”
There are thousands like Shah, stuck in Afghanistan under a capricious and unpredictable Taliban rule, who did not make it onto U.S. military evacuation flights — those who worked for the U.S. Army or the government, and their families, and who were eligible for U.S. humanitarian visas. They know they are potential targets as the Taliban tighten their grip since taking over Kabul fully this week.

U.S. Employers Added 235,000 Jobs in August, a Marked Slowdown
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The American economy slowed abruptly last month, adding 235,000 jobs, a sharp drop from the huge gains recorded earlier in the summer and an indication that the Delta variant of the coronavirus is putting a damper on hiring.
The Labor Department report on Friday follows a sharp increase in coronavirus cases and deaths that has undermined hopes that restrictions on daily activities were nearing an end.
The unemployment rate was 5.2 percent, compared with 5.4 percent in July. Economists polled by Bloomberg has been looking for gain of 725,000 jobs.
“There’s no question that the Delta variant is why today’s job report isn’t stronger,” President Biden said. “I know people were looking, and I was hoping, for a higher number.”
The August showing would have been respectable in pre[-]pandemic times. But after gains of 962,000 in June and 1.05 million in July — and with more than eight million people unemployed — it was a sharp deceleration.

LE FIGARO : Le pays vient de bloquer six VPN, ces logiciels permettant d'accéder à des sites interdits en Russie, comme ceux liés à l'opposant Alexeï Navalny.
Le gendarme russe des télécoms, Roskomnadzor, a annoncé le blocage de six logiciels très utilisés de réseaux privés virtuels (VPN) permettant d'avoir accès à des sites internet interdits en Russie. Le service fédéral a estimé que l'utilisation de ces VPN permettait de consulter des «contenus interdits» et encourageait des «activités illégales comme la promotion des drogues, de la pédopornographie, de l'extrémisme et des tendances suicidaires».
Ce blocage concerne les programmes Hola!VPN, ExpressVPN, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited, Nord VPN, Speedify VPN et IPVanish VPN, a précisé Roskomnadzor dans un communiqué. Pourtant, Nord VPN semble toujours fonctionner actuellement. BARCELONA, Spain — In the spring of 2019, an emissary of Catalonia’s top separatist leader traveled to Moscow in search of a political lifeline.
The independence movement in Catalonia, the semiautonomous region in Spain’s northeast, had been largely crushed after a referendum on breaking away two years earlier. The European Union and the United States, which supported Spain’s effort to keep the country intact, had rebuffed the separatists’ pleas for support.
But in Russia, a door was opening.
In Moscow, the emissary, Josep Lluis Alay, a senior adviser to the self-exiled former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, met with current Russian officials, former intelligence officers and the well-connected grandson of a K.G.B. spymaster. The aim was to secure Russia’s help in severing Catalonia from the rest of Spain, according to a European intelligence report, which was reviewed by The New York Times.
Asked about the report’s findings, both Mr. Alay and Mr. Puigdemont confirmed the trips to Moscow, which have never been reported, but insisted they were part of regular outreach to foreign officials and journalists. Mr. Alay said any suggestion that he was seeking Russian assistance was “a fantasy story created by Madrid.”
But other confidential documents indicate that Russia was a central preoccupation between Mr. Alay and Mr. Puigdemont. For Russia, outreach to the separatists would fit President Vladimir V. Putin’s strategy of trying to sow disruption in the West by supporting divisive political movements. In Italy, secret audio recordings revealed a Russian plot to covertly finance the hard-right League party. In Britain, a Times investigation uncovered discussions among right-wing fringe figures about opening bank accounts in Moscow. After a meeting of EU defence ministers, Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, said the moment had come to establish an active EU expeditionary force, described by some senior European politicians as an army.
Repeated attempts have been made to encourage military cooperation between member states, often attacked as an example of nation-building by critics. I‘m thinking seriously of changing platforms. Even though I have been blogging on Google’s Blogger for twenty or so years; since I changed this blog’s focus, making it far more gay-friendly, I have become increasingly convinced that inexplicable things are happening in the background which do not correspond with the facts as I am able to garner them from other stat counter websites I am connected with.
For example, I have had an excellent connexion with a French website for many, many years. Its recording of my stats tells me a very different story from the stats that Google tells me. According to that website, my stats are going up; according to Google, my page views are going down! Go figure!
I have just had 4,000 page views shaved off my monthly total in the last half hour or so. A similar thing happened last night. This has nothing to do with any algorithm; it has everything to do with the human hand and possibly with homophobia. Of that I am convinced.
Just because a company is tech savvy, it doesn’t mean that its employees are enlightened! Some of Google’s employees appear not to be!
So, please do not be surprised if I inform you soon that I have a different web address. If I do get a new web address, you will be informed well in advance. Naturally, I do not want to lose anyone. Not even one of you! You are all very important to me. I consider you as part of my family.
Any changes will be published well in advance. Please look out for possible changes.

Avec les nouveaux maîtres de Kaboul, notre reportage au cœur du pouvoir taliban
LE FIGARO : EXCLUSIF - Dans la nuit du 30 au 31 août, les derniers soldats américains ont quitté l'aéroport de la capitale afghane. Les talibans, évincés du pouvoir il y a tout juste vingt ans, règnent à nouveau d'une main de fer sur l'Afghanistan. Nos reporters ont pu les rencontrer.
Sur la route qui mène de nulle part à Kaboul, une centaine d'hommes ¬armés à bord de vieilles motos fond sur l'immense forteresse. Hurlant des slogans à la gloire du mouvement taliban, tirant en l'air et sur les gardes qui s'interposent, la horde traverse la cour dans un tourbillon de poussière ocre. Et libère, en quelques minutes, les milliers de détenus de cette prison ultrasécurisée aux portes de la capitale afghane : des frères d'armes, mais aussi des membres du groupe État islamique et de la nébuleuse al-Qaida, ainsi que plusieurs criminels jugés particulièrement dangereux. Deux ou trois heures après ce coup d'éclat, sorte de prélude à la victoire, la guérilla pénètre dans la capitale. La République islamique d'Afghanistan cède sa place à l'Émirat islamique.
Le nouveau maître des lieux, c'est lui : Hazrat Wali « Zindani » (le prisonnier). Afghan Siblings Recount the Perils of the First Day of Taliban Rule
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Ahmad, 27, lingered in bed. He did not want to face the day. His sister Haanya, 20, had no appetite for breakfast. She looked out the window, where four Taliban fighters were patrolling the block, AK-47 rifles swung over their shoulders.
It was Tuesday morning in Kabul, a day after the United States completed its military withdrawal, and there was no doubt who was in charge now.
In telephone interviews, the two siblings recounted what their lives looked like on Day 1 of Taliban rule, after two decades of U.S. occupation. Like many ordinary Afghans, they were already trying to learn how to navigate the new Afghanistan.
“Our life just two weeks ago seems 10 years away,” Ahmad said. “For 20 years the U.S. lied to us and said: ‘We are with you. We will not leave the Afghan people.’ Who is with us now? Only the Taliban.”
Just two weeks ago, before the Taliban entered the capital, Ahmad was a government employee. He lost his job and access to his government bank account with his savings. His wife had a miscarriage.
Haanya, a freelance journalist, used to roam cafes freely and talked to strangers for her stories. Now, her story pitches are turned down, and she hasn’t left the house in 10 days. Sep 1, 2021 • Sigmund Freuds Tochter Anna wurde im gleichen Jahr geboren wie die Psychoanalyse. Im Londoner Exil hält Anna beim Durchsehen der Korrespondenz von Freud ein Zwiegespräch mit ihm. Dabei entsteht das Doppelporträt des Vaters der Psychoanalyse und der Tochter, die er nicht gewollt hatte. Bekannte französische Schauspieler haben den Protagonisten ihre Stimmen geliehen.
Wer Freuds Lebensgeschichte niederschreiben will, darf ihm nicht gehorchen, denn der Erforscher der Psyche sprach der Öffentlichkeit das Recht ab, mehr über seine persönlichen Verhältnisse, seine Kämpfe, Enttäuschungen und Erfolge zu erfahren. Ein Biograf müsse lügen, beschönigen und gar sein eigenes Unverständnis verbergen, denn man könne die Wahrheit einer Biografie nicht besitzen, und besäße sie jemand, könnte er nicht darüber verfügen. David Teboul hat nicht gezögert, sich Freud zu widersetzen. Er zeichnet dieses Porträt anhand von dessen Briefwechsel, der sich als wichtigste Materie durch den Film zieht. Seine Korrespondenz weist Freud als einen der letzten großen Briefschreiber des Jahrhunderts aus. Er führte sogar ein Verzeichnis über seinen Briefwechsel und hielt fest, welche Briefe er schrieb, erhielt und erwartete. Korrespondenzen haben die europäische Kultur wesentlich geprägt; davon zeugen auch Freuds Briefe, in denen er die Entstehung und das Erstarken der psychoanalytischen Bewegung dokumentiert. Doch bei Freud gab es ein besonderes Bedürfnis, mit seinen Briefpartnern zu kommunizieren, in Kontakt zu bleiben und zu den anderen ein Band zu knüpfen, das es ihm gestattete, eine Beziehung zu pflegen, aber auch auf Abstand zu gehen. In diesem sehr persönlichen Porträt spricht Freud selbst im Präsens über sein Leben und Denken und tritt mit Zeitgenossen in Dialog. NastassjaCanCook : "Golubzy" / Russian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients:
1 head of cabbage
For the sauce:
3 medium carrots (grated)
1 large onion
1 large can of tomatoes
5 cloves garlic (pressed)
½ cup of fresh dill and parsley
salt and pepper to taste
1 tbsp butter
2 tbsp cooking oil
Method:
Sauté the onions in butter and oil (you need 2 onions in total)
Add salt and pepper
Reserve half for the filling.>br /> In a large sauce pan, add cooking oil.
Add grated carrots and onion.
Add garlic and crushed tomatoes (reserve ½ cup of tomato puree for the filling).
Add fresh herbs, salt and pepper.
Set aside.
Filling:
1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground pork
1 onion
1½ cups of rice (al dente)
fresh herbs (parsley and dill)
½ cup tomato puree
¼ cup cold water
salt and pepper to taste
Combine all ingredients and set aside.
Prepare cabbage leaves. Cut the core of whole cabbage around with sharp knife. Place it in a large pot with boiling water, ‘core’ side down.
Remove some of the outer leaves as they start cooking and place them on the paper towel.
Repeat the process until you are left with pretty much just the core.
To make rolls:
Place a generous amount of the filling on each cooked cabbage leaf. Roll tight. In a large pot, add some of the sauce, then cabbage rolls, then sauce again, then cabbage rolls. Cover with more sauce and simmer on a low heat for 45 minutes. Serve with sour cream and fresh dill! Enjoy!

In Bezug auf Afghanistan ist derzeit allerorten vom «Scheitern des Westens» zu hören, vom Scheitern des Islam jedoch so gut wie nie. Der Westen hatte jedoch nie vor, Afghanistan zu «verwestlichen». Insofern ist er mit seinen Werten dort auch nicht gescheitert. Er hat lediglich versucht, militärisch eine Brandmauer zwischen dem friedlich-toleranten und dem kriegerisch-jihadistischen Islam zu errichten. Denn diese Brandmauer fehlt in der islamischen Theologie bis heute.
Darauf verweist die muslimische Aufklärung besonders hartnäckig seit 9/11: «Der friedlich-tolerante Islam ist als Wunschvorstellung der meisten Muslime verständlich, allein ihm fehlt die theologische Stütze», erklärte 2002 der Algerier Soheib Bencheikh, damals Grossmufti der 46 muslimischen Gemeinden von Marseille. 2003 schrieb der tunesisch-stämmige Islamwissenschafter Abdelwahab Meddeb: «Wenn der Fanatismus die Krankheit des Katholizismus und der Nazismus die deutsche Krankheit darstellen, dann ist im Fundamentalismus zweifellos die islamische Krankheit zu sehen.» Leider ohne Wirkung auf das nach wie vor weit verbreitete «Das hat alles nichts mit dem Islam zu tun»-Denken in der westlichen Politik und unter westlichen Intellektuellen.

Abtreibungen selbst nach Vergewaltigung illegal
FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG: In Texas dürfen Frauen von der sechsten Woche an nicht mehr abtreiben. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wissen viele aber noch nichts von ihrer Schwangerschaft. Überhaupt ist das neue Gesetz umstritten – von Denunziantentum ist die Rede.
Bis zuletzt hatten viele Menschen in Texas gehofft, dass der Oberste Gerichtshof einschreiten würde – doch in der Nacht von Dienstag auf Mittwoch schwiegen die neun Richterinnen und Richter zum neuen Abtreibungsgesetz in dem republikanisch regierten Bundesstaat. Damit trat es in Kraft. Weniger als 24 Stunden später kam dann doch eine Entscheidung der Richter in Washington, doch änderte diese nichts an der Situation. Mit fünf gegen vier Stimmen entschied das Oberste Gericht, das texanische Gesetz nicht zu blockieren. Die konservative Mehrheit beschied den Anträgen, es zu stoppen, sie seien nicht überzeugend gewesen. In der Begründung schreiben die fünf Richter jedoch auch, dass dies keine Entscheidung über die Rechtmäßigkeit des Gesetzes sei.
Das Gesetz sieht vor, dass Personen, die einen Schwangerschaftsabbruch vornehmen oder unterstützen, rechtlich haftbar gemacht werden können – die Schwangere selbst fällt aber nicht darunter. Die neue Regelung betrifft alle Schwangerschaften von der sechsten Woche an, wenn viele Frauen noch nicht wissen, dass sie schwanger sind. Laut der amerikanischen Gesundheitsbehörde CDC werden geschätzte 65 Prozent der Abtreibungen in den ersten acht, und 91 Prozent in den ersten 13 Wochen nach der Befruchtung vorgenommen. Das texanische Gesetz erklärt damit sehr viele Schwangerschaftsabbrüche faktisch für illegal. LE FIGARO : Le président américain Joe Biden a promis mercredi 1er septembre de défendre le droit des femmes à avorter et vivement critiqué une loi extrêmement restrictive entrée en vigueur au Texas dans la nuit.
«Cette loi radicale est une violation flagrante du droit constitutionnel reconnu dans l'arrêt Roe v. Wade», a-t-il écrit dans un communiqué, en référence à la décision de la Cour suprême de 1973 qui a instauré un droit à l'avortement aux États-Unis. «Nous allons protéger et défendre ce droit (...) mon gouvernement y est très attaché», a-t-il ajouté.
La loi texane, qui fait l'objet d'un recours en urgence devant la Cour suprême, interdit d'avorter une fois les battements du cœur de l'embryon détectés, soit environ à six semaines de grossesse, même en cas d'inceste ou de viol. Fait unique : elle confie exclusivement aux citoyens le soin de la faire respecter en leur donnant la possibilité de poursuivre toute personne ou organisation qui aiderait les femmes à avorter au-delà de ce terme.

The Supreme Court refused just before midnight on Wednesday to block a Texas law prohibiting most abortions, less than a day after it took effect and became the most restrictive abortion measure in the nation.
The vote was 5 to 4, with Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. joining the court’s three liberal members in dissent.
The majority opinion was unsigned and consisted of a single long paragraph. It said the abortion providers who had challenged the law in an emergency application to the court had not made their case in the face of “complex and novel” procedural questions. The majority stressed that it was not ruling on the constitutionality of the Texas law and did not mean to limit “procedurally proper challenges” to it.
But the ruling was certain to fuel the hopes of abortion opponents and fears of abortion rights advocates as the court takes up a separate case in its new term this fall to decide whether Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision establishing a constitutional right to the procedure, should be overruled. It also left Texas abortion providers turning away patients as they scrambled to comply with the law, which prohibits abortions after roughly six weeks.

I find the extreme right-wing positions taken in American politics very disturbing. As my followers know by now, I do not like extreme politics, either on the left or right. I believe in the golden middle way wherever and whenever possible. I certainly do not think that politicians should be meddling in medical matters relating to a woman's body. This should be left to the medical doctors and specialists who know far better than judges, law-makers or politicians what course of action is correct for their patients.
One gets the feeling that these legislarors are in serious competition with the Taliban!
We've just had to live through four years of that awful man, Trump, in power; now this draconian law! This law puts medical doctors in an invidious and extremely difficult position. Whilst I do believe that abortions should be avoided whenever possible, there are times when a mother's life is at risk of death if she continues to carry the baby full-term. And what if the mother's death will leave her other children without a mother? Have these lawmakers really thought this through? Also, if a young girl gets raped and ends up pregnant as a result of the rape, she will now have to carry the rapist's child for the full nine-month term and be its mother for the rest of her life. What a burden to bear! Who'd want to be a doctor in Texas? Or a mother in Texas, for that matter!
So what do they want to ban next? Alcohol? Gay weddings? Tobacco?
The Prohibition didn't stop the drinking of alcohol in America in the Twenties and early Thirties. It just drove drinking underground. Until the stupid law had to be repealed. This law is equally stupid. Just as the Prohibition didn't stop drinking; this law will not stop abortions. All it will do is drive the aborting of unwanted babies underground: to the backstreets! We'll be back to primitive ways of aborting babies next, like hot baths, bottles of gin, and knitting needles! I believe that this is how many an unwanted baby was aborted in years gone by. Further, this is a regressive measure because it will hit the poorest in society the most. Rich women will be able to travel out of state for their abortions, or even travel abroad to get them. Such a solution will probably not be affordable for the poorest women in society. In short: The Prohibition didn't stop the drinking of alcohol; and this law will not stop abortions either! It will stop some, but it will cause unspeakable misery for those who will be unable to circumvent the law. "I rest my case."

And what if the mother's death will leave her other children without a mother? Have these lawmakers really thought this through? Also, if a young girl gets raped and ends up pregnant as a result of the rape, she will now have to carry the rapist's child for the full nine-month term and be its mother for the rest of her life. What a burden to bear! Who'd want to be a doctor in Texas? Or a mother in Texas, for that matter!
So what do they want to ban next? Alcohol? Gay weddings? Tobacco?
The Prohibition didn't stop the drinking of alcohol in America in the Twenties and early Thirties. It just drove drinking underground. Until the stupid law had to be repealed. This law is equally stupid. Just as the Prohibition didn't stop drinking; this law will not stop abortions. All it will do is drive the aborting of unwanted babies underground: to the backstreets! We'll be back to primitive ways of aborting babies next, like hot baths, bottles of gin, and knitting needles! I believe that this is how many an unwanted baby was aborted in years gone by. Further, this is a regressive measure because it will hit the poorest in society the most. Rich women will be able to travel out of state for their abortions, or even travel abroad to get them. Such a solution will probably not be affordable for the poorest women in society. In short: The Prohibition didn't stop the drinking of alcohol; and this law will not stop abortions either! It will stop some, but it will cause unspeakable misery for those who will be unable to circumvent the law. "I rest my case."
I feel very sorry to have to say this, but I fear that the USA has seen its finest days. It used to be the wellspring of forward thinking and fresh ideas. Now it seems to have taken on the röle of being the wellspring of oppression and suppression. – © Mark

Damit rückt für Amerikaner und Europäer die heikle Frage in den Vordergrund, wie man dem neuen Regime in Kabul begegnen will. Soll man pragmatisch sein und die neuen Herrscher am Hindukusch anerkennen? Oder soll man die Islamisten, die das Land zwanzig Jahre lang mit Krieg und Terror überzogen haben, weiterhin ächten und isolieren? Beide Wege bergen beträchtliche Risiken. Der Westen muss deshalb einen Mittelweg suchen.

Bis vor kurzem hatten die USA und die EU noch bekräftigt, sie würden keine Regierung anerkennen, die gewaltsam an die Macht gekommen sei. Dann fiel Kabul innert weniger Tage, und die Realität holte sie ein. Wenn die Politiker in Washington, Brüssel, Paris und Berlin die Afghaninnen und Afghanen nicht völlig im Stich lassen wollen, wie sie bei jeder Gelegenheit beteuern, müssen sie mit den neuen Machthabern reden oder gar kooperieren. Um die Evakuierung der eigenen Bürger zu ermöglichen, hat man dies in den letzten Tagen ja auch bereits getan.
