He and his colleagues have faced threats for their work and six of the paper’s journalists were murdered, including Anna Politkovskaya, who investigated human rights abuses in Chechnya.
Soon after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, under pressure from the authorities Novaya Gazeta halted operations and its licence was subsequently revoked.

Feb 27, 2026 | A small but growing number of U.S. citizens are traveling to Havana for a breakthrough new treatment for Alzheimer’s, a disease that systematically destroys a person's memory, personality, and ability to function.
Studies show that, unlike all other medications available for the disease, Cuba’s NeuralCIM not only stabilizes patients, in more than half of cases it reverses many of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Cuba approved the medication for use last year, following several years of medical trials.

Widdecombe was remembered as a “kind and warm character” and a woman of “profound faith” who dedicated much of her life to public service. Nigel Farage paid an emotional tribute, declaring: “She will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Ann.” Her nephew, the Rev Roger Widdecombe, and close friend Sir Christian Sweeting also paid tribute during the service.
The 78-year-old died following a brutal hammer attack at her Dartmoor home in July 2026. Joshua Kerry, 28, has been charged with her murder and remains in custody awaiting trial. A larger public memorial celebrating Widdecombe’s life will be held later this year. …

Aug 12, 2022 | Barbunya means borlotti or cranberry beans in Turkish and pilaki is one of the olive oil based cooking techniques in Turkey, referring to cooking in a sauce made with onions, garlic, carrot, tomatoes, sugar, and olive oil — the most common olive oil dishes in Turkey.
This technique is also common in Greece (plaki) and Bulgaria (plakiya). The best version of this dish is made when the beans are fresh, but it is also quite delicious when made with dried beans. Alternatively, this dish can be made with Romano or pinto beans if you are not able find borlotti beans.
Like most of the olive oil dishes in Turkey, barbunya pilaki is usually served cold as a side or mezze and is one of the classic and favorite summer mezzes in Turkey.

Continental Europe’s first total solar eclipse in decades will briefly turn day to dark across several countries on Wednesday, drawing armies of sky watchers.
The coincidence of Earth, the moon and the sun falling into perfect alignment — a fleeting celestial event known as totality — has created a frenzy. People are paying exorbitant hotel rates to be in the inner part, or umbra, of the lunar shadow. Along that path, if the sky is clear, the sun will seem to become a black disk ensconced in a hazy corona, surrounded by planets and stars.
In Spain, normally empty towns have filled up. Other people have trekked to far-flung North Atlantic destinations.
The eclipse will begin at about 6:08 p.m. Central European Time in the northernmost part of Russia, its shadow swooping over the Arctic Ocean, narrowly missing the North Pole. Au moins 181 personnes sont mortes et plus de 1300 autres ont été blessées lors du séisme en Colombie, selon un nouveau bilan de l’Association des maires publié mardi. Les villes de Cali, Pereira, Manizales et Quibdo, dans l’ouest du pays, ont été touchées. Les maires ont en outre fait état de plus de 165 bâtiments détruits par ce tremblement de terre de magnitude 7,4 et survenu tôt lundi matin.

Es ist schon viele Jahre her, dass ich mich in einer ähnlichen Situation befand. Dennoch habe ich den Unterschied erlebt – und so habe ich ihn wahrgenommen:
Ich habe Deutsch in der Schweiz gelernt. Als ich dort in den späten siebziger und frühen achtziger Jahren arbeitete, war es im beruflichen Umfeld üblich, sich zu siezen und einander natürlich mit „Herr“ oder „Frau“ anzusprechen. Dies galt meist auch außerhalb der Arbeit; das informelle „Du“ war engen Freunden vorbehalten.
Später, nach meiner Zeit in der Schweiz, arbeitete ich wieder mit Amerikanern zusammen – ich war bereits vor meinem Aufenthalt in der Schweiz bei einem amerikanischen Unternehmen tätig gewesen –, und da lagen die Dinge natürlich ganz anders. Die Atmosphäre war viel lockerer. Doch gerade deshalb musste man im Umgang mit anderen deutlich vorsichtiger sein.
Ehrlich gesagt habe ich die formelle Schweizer Arbeitsweise bevorzugt. Die Anrede mit „Herr“ oder „Frau“ und dem Nachnamen gewährleistet ein gewisses Maß an gegenseitigem Respekt. Das informelle „Du“ hingegen verleitet andere oft dazu, Grenzen zu überschreiten und – als Folge davon – unangemessene Fragen zum Privatleben zu stellen, was wiederum zu Spannungen unter Kollegen führen kann.
Kurzum: Meiner Meinung nach ist die „altmodische“, formelle Vorgehensweise weitaus besser. — © Mark Alexander

Wenn es nach den drei Vertragsstaaten geht, liegt die Bedeutung des neuen Verteidigungsbündnisses vorrangig in seiner Abschreckungswirkung: Die reiche Ölmonarchie der Saudis hat sich mit der islamischen Atommacht Pakistan und der militärisch schlagkräftigen Türkei zusammengetan.
Die Dreier-Allianz, die am Freitag im saudischen Mekka geschlossen wurde, ergänzt den saudisch-pakistanischen Beistandspakt aus dem vergangenen Jahr. Spitzenpolitiker der drei Länder bemühen sich denn auch, den defensiven Charakter der Allianz herauszustreichen.
Die beteiligten Staaten hätten kein Land als Angriffsziel im Visier, beteuerte der türkische Präsident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan nach der Gründungszeremonie. Allerdings kann der schiitisch geprägte Iran dieses aus drei großen sunnitischen Nationen gebildete Bündnis durchaus als feindselig betrachten.
