Le premier ministre australien, Scott Morrison, a confirmé, jeudi 16 septembre, la rupture d’un gigantesque contrat, conclu en 2016 avec la France, pour la fourniture de sous-marins conventionnels, préférant construire des sous-marins à propulsion nucléaire à l’aide de technologies américaines et britanniques. « La décision que nous avons prise de ne pas continuer avec les sous-marins de classe Attack et de prendre un autre chemin n’est pas un changement d’avis, c’est un changement de besoins », a déclaré M. Morrison.
Dans son sillage, les Etats-Unis ont ainsi annoncé un vaste partenariat de sécurité avec l’Australie et le Royaume-Uni dans la zone indo-pacifique. « La première grande initiative de [ce nouveau pacte appelé] “Aukus” sera de livrer une flotte de sous-marins à propulsion nucléaire à l’Australie », a encore déclaré le premier ministre australien, apparaissant en visioconférence, tout comme son homologue britannique, Boris Johnson, lors d’un événement présidé par Joe Biden à la Maison Blanche.
La France voit ainsi ce « contrat du siècle », de quelque 90 milliards de dollars australiens (56 milliards d’euros, mais seulement 8 milliards pour la partie française), échapper à son industrie navale. Mit einer neuen Sicherheitspartnerschaft für den indopazifischen Raum treten die Vereinigten Staaten, Großbritannien und Australien Chinas Machtausweitung in der Region noch stärker entgegen. Das Bündnis soll es unter anderem Australien ermöglichen, erstmals U-Boote mit Nuklearantrieb zu bauen. Der amerikanische Präsident Joe Biden, der britische Premier Boris Johnson und der australische Regierungschef Scott Morrison hatten den neuen Pakt mit der Bezeichnung „AUKUS“ am späten Mittwoch verkündet.
Biden bezeichnete das Bündnis als „historischen Schritt“, mit dem die bewährte Zusammenarbeit zwischen den drei Partnern weiter vertieft und formalisiert werde, um den Frieden und die Stabilität im Indopazifik auf lange Sicht zu sichern. „Wir müssen in der Lage sein, uns sowohl mit dem derzeitigen strategischen Umfeld in der Region als auch mit dessen möglichen Entwicklungen auseinanderzusetzen“, sagte Biden.

Mit der Sicherheitspartnerschaft öffneten die drei Länder „ein neues Kapitel“ in ihrer Freundschaft. SYDNEY, Australia — When Scott Morrison became Australia’s prime minister three years ago, he insisted that the country could maintain close ties with China, its largest trading partner, while working with the United States, its main security ally.
“Australia doesn’t have to choose,” he said in one of his first foreign policy speeches.
On Thursday, Australia effectively chose. Following years of sharply deteriorating relations with Beijing, Australia announced a new defense agreement in which the United States and Britain would help it deploy nuclear-powered submarines, a major advance in Australian military strength.
With its move to acquire heavy weaponry and top-secret technology, Australia has thrown in its lot with the United States for generations to come — a “forever partnership,” in Mr. Morrison’s words. The agreement will open the way to deeper military ties and higher expectations that Australia would join any military conflict with Beijing.

A joke by Boris Johnson that the UK could become “the Saudi Arabia of penal policy” under Priti Patel has been condemned as “disgusting” and a “new low” by opposition politicians.
The prime minister made the remarks, which can be viewed in video footage obtained and reported by Business Insider, during a speech behind closed doors at a Conservative party fundraiser event on 10 September.
“In the immortal words of Priti Patel or Michael Howard or some other hardline home secretary, addressing the inmates of one of our larger prisons: it’s fantastic to see so many of you here,” Johnson told the 300 attenders at the lunch, which took place at the InterContinental London Park Lane in Mayfair.
He went on to joke about the UK becoming the “Saudi Arabia of penal policy” under Patel as part of comments about work on renewable energy. “I said last year we’re the Saudi Arabia of wind. Probably the Saudi Arabia of penal policy, under our wonderful home secretary,” Johnson said.
Saudi Arabia is one of the most punitive regimes in the world. It is one of the few remaining countries to carry out capital punishment by beheading and has long been accused of grave human rights abuses, including the torture of activists. It can impose the death penalty for homosexuality and many drug offences.
Patel has previously indicated her support for the death penalty as a “deterrent” for serious crime, though she has since denied this and suggested she is not an “active supporter” of the policy.
Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner, called the prime minister’s remarks “disgusting”. She tweeted: “Saudi Arabia beheads its own citizens, tortures activists exercising their democratic rights and kills homosexuals. This is disgusting. THE NEW YORK TIMES: It’s been a good month for Bitcoin believers. The currency of the future — or is it the future of currency? — became legal tender in El Salvador.
Some might dismiss as a publicity stunt the embrace of a digital currency by a country where only a third of the population has internet access. Some Salvadorans took to the streets to protest. But let’s not minimize this moment. Esperanto, the language of the future, never managed to become an official language in any country.
Bitcoin, for the uninitiated, is a technology that purports to solve a host of problems with old-fashioned national currencies. It is designed to safeguard wealth against the depredations of inflation, public authorities and financial intermediaries.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. Some products become popular because they’re useful. Bitcoin is popular despite being mostly useless. Its success rests on the simple fact that the value of a Bitcoin has increased dramatically since its introduction in 2009, making some people rich and inspiring others to hope they can ride the rocket, too.
It’s not really a virtual currency at all. It’s virtual gold, a vehicle for speculative investment made possible by some interesting technical innovations. PARIS — It’s the news network that claims it tells viewers what the “woke” mainstream media won’t. It says it fights for endangered freedom of expression, even as it has been fined by the government’s broadcast regulator for inciting racial hatred.
It is CNews — which in four short years became France’s No. 1 news network for the first time in May by giving a bullhorn to far-right politicians, opponents of fighting climate change and a high-profile proponent of the discredited idea of using the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a cure for Covid-19.
The model is Fox News — including the clashing talking heads and incendiary cultural topics — and it has worked. Owned by the French billionaire Vincent Bolloré, former chairman of the media group Vivendi, CNews increasingly helps shape the national debate, especially on hot-button issues like crime, immigration and Islam’s place in France that are expected to sway next year’s presidential election.

Über 196 Brücken und durch 55 Tunnel kämpft sich der Bernina Express von Chur in der Schweiz bis nach Tirano in Italien. Durch tiefe Täler, wilde Schluchten und über das ewige Eis der Bündner Alpen. Erst 1890 erschließen die Bahningenieure den Südosten der Schweiz. Die einzigartige und gewagte Streckenführung durch das Albulatal und über den Berninapass zählt seit 2008 zum UNESCO-Welterbe. Die Viadukte und Tunnel sind steinerne Zeugen für den Pioniergeist der Bahningenieure und den Mut der Bahnarbeiter und Mineure, die trotz der lauernden Gefahren das silbern schimmernde Schienenband durch die Berge hindurch bis hinunter ins Val Poschiavo legten. Auf den ersten Blick unsichtbar: die Bedrohung der Strecke durch die globale Klimaerwärmung. Vor allem im Hochgebirge kommt es zu markanten Veränderungen.Heute noch muss der Lokführer auf dieser Strecke wachsam sein, denn damals wie heute sind das Wetter und die Berge immer für eine Überraschung gut. Extreme Wetterereignisse wie Starkschneefälle, Überschwemmungen oder Winterstürme im Gebirge können unter bestimmten Umständen dazu führen, dass ganze Berge ins Rutschen kommen – und im schlimmsten Fall die Bahnlinie bedrohen.
