TIMESONLINE: Cigarette clamped between thumb and finger, a louche Barack Obama leans back with playful eyes and draws smoke deep into his lungs.

CONVERT THOSE MUSLIMS!

THE TELEGRAPH: Church leaders are to debate the contentious issue of whether Christians should be doing more to convert Muslims.

A discussion on the sensitive topic has been tabled for the next meeting of the Church of England's governing body amid fears that some clergy are ignoring their traditional missionary role.

Some members of the General Synod believe Christ ordered all Christians to recruit nonbelievers and followers of other faiths, and they want to see how many bishops and vicars agree with this view.

Among the speakers is likely to be the Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, who earlier this year warned that Church leaders had "gone too far" in their sensitivity towards Muslims and were not doing enough to spread the word of God.

At the end of the debate at next February's Synod meeting in London, bishops, clergy and lay members will vote on whether bishops should report to the Synod on "their understanding of the uniqueness of Christ in multi-faith Britain", and give examples of how the gospel should be shared. Onward Christian Soldiers

THE TELEGRAPH: At the core of Christianity is a force for good and we should not forget that.

Dorothy Glen adores Christmas. The mother-of-three from South Shields usually has a tree, a Father Christmas, an assortment of snowmen (and women – no sexism here!) in her garden and myriad, twinkling lights decorating her home. Then she was ordered to remove them all by a housing association worker who claimed the display offended her Chinese and Bengali neighbours.

The Christmas-bah-humbugging jobsworths, who have become the self-appointed, self-important guardians of political correctness, are bound every year to prove their worth. Like the “Ho-ho Homes” that demand the output of a small nuclear plant to illuminate, the tetchy debate over politicians’ choice of cards, and the school “Nativity” plays that combine Hanakkah, Diwali and Kwanzaa, their antics are a staple of the festive run-up.

This year doesn’t disappoint: we have po-faced clergymen rewriting carols to reflect the tenor of our times – hence the uplifting inclusion of hoodies, single mothers, Aids sufferers, and lottery losers in a version of The Twelve Days of Christmas by the Rev George Fisher from Lichfield.

The Rev Stephen Coulter has gone one better and banned O Little Town of Bethlehem from his services in Blandford Forum, Dorset, because, he claims, it fails to reflect the little town’s recent troubles. Shoot the Bastards at Goldmine Sachs!

MAIL Online: Investment bank Goldman Sachs is to pay £4.3billion in bonuses to its City workers.

Despite the financial crisis and the spectre of soaring unemployment, staff at the bank will get an average of £142,600 each.

The international group, which is estimated to have 5,400 employees in London, is already nicknamed ' Goldmine Sacks' for the large extra payouts it awards to its star performers.

Yesterday the firm posted its first loss for almost a decade. And earlier this year it was forced to accept a £6.5billion lifeline from the U.S. government after falling prey to the economic crisis.

Now, an amount equivalent to two thirds of that aid will be paid to its workers as bonuses. Goldmine Sachs: As Jobless Toll Soars, Investment Bank's Bonuses for Staff Are Cut to a MERE £4.3bn >>> By Karl West and Nick McDermott | December 16, 2008

'Germany Has Underestimated the Threat of the Far Right'

Photobucket
Photo of the far right in Germany courtesy of SpiegelOnline International

SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Germany has been debating the merits of a possible ban on the far-right NPD party following Saturday's nearly fatal stabbing of the Passau police chief by a suspected neo-Nazi. Media commentators say the country faces a very real threat from the far right and isn't doing enough to tackle it.

The near-fatal stabbing of Alois Mannichl, the police chief of the southern Germany city of Passau by a suspected neo-Nazi on Saturday shows right-wing extremism in Germany has reached a new and threatening dimension, write German media commentators. But they can't agree on whether the far-right National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) should be banned.

Some say the calls for the party to be outlawed, voiced in recent days by leading members of the conservative Christian Social Union, the Bavarian sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, are a helpless knee-jerk reaction that will do little to tackle the root causes of lingering right-wing extremism in Germany.

The German government already tried once to ban the party under a provision of the constitution that permits neo-Nazi parties to be shut out of politics. However, the country's highest court refused to grant a main hearing in the case in 2003 because some of the senior NPD members called to testify were government informants.

But others say it's worth trying again -- a ban could at least hurt the far right by putting a stop to the public funds the NPD currently gets as a legitimate political party. >>> David Crossland | December 16, 2008

Glasgow Bomb Plot: NHS Doctor Found Guilty of Terror Attack on Airport

THE TELEGRAPH: An NHS doctor has been found guilty of launching car bomb attacks on Glasgow airport and a London nightclub as part of a nationwide terrorist campaign.

Bilal Abdulla was the passenger in a burning Jeep driven into Glasgow airport on June 30 last year in an attempted suicide attack.

The driver of the Jeep, Kafeel Ahmed, a PhD student from India, died a month later from the burns he suffered in the attack.

The pair had earlier tried to blow up two Mercedes cars packed with gas canisters and petrol cans that they had left outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub in London's West End.

Woolwich Crown Court court heard the men also had two other cars in reserve and were probably planning a campaign of terrorist "spectaculars." >>> By Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent | December 16, 2008

Prison Bans Chapel Crucifix to Avoid Offending Muslims

MAIL Online: A prison’s new chapel will not contain a crucifix to avoid offending Muslim inmates, it emerged today.

Bosses at HMP Lewes have been told the traditional Christian symbol, featuring Jesus nailed to a cross, must not be used in the Grade-II listed Victorian jail’s ‘multi-faith space’.

The room - part of a £1million new block - has been split in two, with one half featuring heated foot baths so Muslim worshippers can wash their feet before prayer.

But the other side, dedicated to Christian prayer, contains just a simple wooden cross and portable alter - both of which can be removed if necessary.

According the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), the traditional Christian crucifix was erased from the chapel’s blueprints after discussion with a Muslim imam. >>> | December 15, 2008

Turkish Academics in Apology to Armenians

THE INDEPENDENT: Intellectuals break taboo to acknowledge genocide by Ottoman Turks

Around 200 Turkish intellectuals and academics are to apologise on the internet today for the ethnic cleansing of Armenians during the First World War, in the most public sign yet that Turkey's most sensitive taboo is slowly melting away.

"My conscience does not accept the denial of the great catastrophe that the Ottoman Armenians were subjected to in 1915," the text prepared by the group reads. "I reject this injustice and ... empathise with the feelings and pain of my Armenian brothers. I apologise to them."

Turkey accepts that many Armenians were killed during the collapse of the Ottoman empire, but insists they were victims of civil strife and that Muslim Turks also died. Most Western historians agree that the ethnic cleansing that killed roughly 700,000 Armenians amounted to genocide. >>> By Nicholas Birch in Istanbul | December 15, 2008

Turkey's prime minister has criticised a Turkish internet petition which apologises for the "great catastrophe" of 1915 when Armenians were massacred.

After 130 Years of Fundraising, Sally Army Told to Stop Rattling Collecting Tins Because It Might 'Offend Other Religions'

MAIL Online: For 130 years they have been part of Christmas, filling the air in towns across the land with music and carols.

But one thing is missing from the repertoire of Salvation Army bands this year - the percussion of rattling tins.

Members have been forbidden to shake their charity tins - even if it's done in time to the music - in case it harasses or intimidates people. One said she had been told it might also offend other religions.

Guidelines for branches organising public collections say tinholders should simply keep the tin still.

It means that when the brass bands start up they can rock and roll all they want - but if they shake and rattle, it could put them in conflict with the law.

Councils and police can enforce the no-rattle rule and have powers to prosecute or ban offenders. The restriction was branded 'bonkers' yesterday both by donors and longserving Salvation Army volunteers.

One collector told the Daily Mail: 'I've been doing this for more than 40 years and I fail to see how rattling a tin could cause offence. If I was shaking a tambourine I could do it all day - if I shake my tin, I could end up in court.' >>> By Paul Harris | December 15, 2008

Sudan Enjoys Cool Beer Thanks to SAB Miller after Long Dry Season

TIMESONLINE: Since the imposition of Islamic law 25 years ago, having a cool beer in Sudan meant running the risk of 40 lashes. Today SAB Miller is preparing to open a brewery in the south of the country.

The company, one of the largest brewers in the world, plans to create a new beer and is investing £25 million in the plant, in Juba, the capital of south Sudan, which is governed by mainly Christian former rebels.

“We will not only be consuming but producing alcohol,” Samson Kwaje, the Agriculture Minister of south Sudan, said at the launch.

Tension is running high between north and south over disputed oilfields, with both sides apparently arming for war. To the southern politicians, who have an eye on full independence, the new beer is a statement of identity as much as a thirst-quencher.

When the Government in Khartoum introduced Sharia in 1983, alcohol was banned throughout the country. The imposition of Islamic law sparked an uprising in the south, which turned into a 20-year civil war, pitting the Christian rebels against northern Muslims.

In a peace deal concluded in 2005, the rebels won the right to a semi-autonomous secular government. Freed from the shackles of Khartoum's Islamic regime, beer lovers were the first to notice a peace dividend.

Entrepreneurs on bicycles would ride the rutted roads to Uganda, bringing back as many crates of alcohol as they could carry. Today restaurants in Juba offer wines, beers and spirits. >>> Rob Crilly in Nairobi | December 15, 2008

The Incompenet Twerps to Let the the Pound Fall through the Floor...

THE INDEPENDENT: Treasury says protecting the currency is 'not a first-order issue' as Euro readies to overtake sterling in markets for the first time.

The plummeting pound will not be propped up by government intervention, ministers declared yesterday, as it emerged that they will simply hope Britain's beleaguered currency stabilises as broader measures to stimulate the economy begin to take effect.

Sterling has fallen to a series of record lows against the euro in recent days, and looks set to reach parity with the single European currency for the first time. Its fall has hit holidaymakers as well as the thousands of Britons living on the Continent, who have seen the value of pensions and savings plummet.

But ministers have made it clear no help will be forthcoming to stabilise sterling. The Europe minister, Caroline Flint, confirmed the value of the pound was not a "first-order issue" and Yvette Cooper, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said bolstering the currency had never been the Government's aim. TIMESONLINE: Interpol notice urges arrest of Islam TV chief

A man wanted by Interpol for his links to an alleged terrorist organisation has been advising Scotland Yard on countering Muslim extremism, a Times investigation has discovered.

Mohamed Ali Harrath has been the subject of the Interpol red notice since 1992 because of his alleged activities in Tunisia, where he co-founded the Tunisian Islamic Front (FIT).

Tunisia has accused Mr Harrath, the chief executive officer of the Islam Channel in Britain and an adviser to the Scotland Yard Muslim Contact Unit, of seeking help from Osama bin Laden. It says that the FIT wants to establish “an Islamic state by means of armed revolutionary violence”.

Mr Harrath has been convicted in absentia of numerous criminal and terrorism-related offences by Tunisian courts and sentenced to 56 years in prison. Tunisia is an ally of the West in the fight against terrorism but is regarded by critics as a police or one-party state. Its secular Government regards those who advocate an Islamic state as a threat to its stability. Shoes Thrown at Bush on Iraq Trip

BBC: A surprise visit by US President George Bush to Iraq has been overshadowed by an incident in which two shoes were thrown at him during a news conference.

An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush "a dog" and threw his footwear, just missing the president.

The soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture.

During the trip, Mr Bush and Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki signed the new security agreement between their countries.

The pact calls for US troops to leave Iraq in 2011 - eight years after the 2003 invasion that has in part defined the Bush presidency.

Speaking just over five weeks before he hands over power to Barack Obama, Mr Bush also said the war in Iraq was not over and more work remained to be done.

His previously unannounced visit came a day after US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told US troops the Iraq mission was in its "endgame". >>> | December 14, 2008

Experts Can Only Guess as We Head Into the Unknown

THE SUNDAY TIMES: American Account

“DON’T project beyond the range of the known observations” is a rule followed by careful economists. In plain English this means, for example, that we know how American consumers behave when petrol prices move between $1 and $4 a gallon, “the range of the known observations”. But we haven’t much of an idea what consumers would do if prices rose to $5 — no experience, no data to inform our forecasts. Which is why we have to be very careful when predicting the effect of the various policies that are being adopted to fight the credit crisis and recession. We simply have no experience of this combination of events.

So we have reason to worry about the galaxy of stars that Barack Obama has assembled to help him right the American economy. They are so bright, so self-confident, so accustomed to being the smartest guy or girl in the room, that doubt is not one of the emotions with which they are familiar, as was true of the bright young “quants” (mathematical economists) who designed the models used to manage the risks taken on by Lehman Brothers and AIG. Senate Scandal Snares Obama’s Chief Aide

THE SUNDAY TIMES: THE bullish, foul-mouthed but effective Chicago arm-twister Rahm Emanuel has come under pressure to resign as Barack Obama’s chief of staff after it was revealed that he had been captured on court-approved wire-taps discussing the names of candidates for Obama’s Senate seat.

Emanuel’s presence at the heart of the scandal threatens to roil the president-elect’s administration as a Chicago prosecutor builds his corruption case against Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois governor.

Blagojevich has been accused of plotting to sell Obama’s Senate seat - which is in the governor’s gift - in return for financial and political favours.

Republicans are salivating at the prospect of tying the president-elect to the notoriously corrupt Chicago machine in which he forged his career. Grover Norquist, an influential conservative tax reform lobbyist, said: “If Obama wants to be squeaky clean, he is going to have to cut all his Chicago friends loose. His chief of staff has fingerprints on the murder weapon.”

Emanuel ducked out of view last week, avoiding reporters’ questions and complaining of harassment and “death threats” as the news spread that he was the likely unnamed adviser cited by the FBI with whom the tainted Blagojevich hoped to bargain over the appointment.

For the “No Drama” Obama team, the spiralling controversy has been an alarming distraction in the midst of the US economic meltdown. Obama has yet to release a promised timeline of contacts between members of his transition team and the governor's office, while Emanuel is thought to be consulting lawyers. >>> Sarah Baxter, Washington | Sunday, December 14, 2008

Greek Riots Spark Fear of Europe in Flames

THE SUNDAY TIMES: Seldom do Greek academics attain the heroic status that was bestowed last week on Christos Kittas, an eminent professor of pathology and rector of Athens University.

More comfortable in front of a whiteboard Kittas, a wiry figure with grey hair and a silver beard, found himself on the front line in what looked like a war zone.

From his palatial office on the first floor of the university, he organised a “human chain” of colleagues to defend the historic building from being ransacked in Greece’s worst street violence in decades.

“I’m terrified,” he confided on Friday as yet another column of demonstrators filed past the building, screaming abuse at police – “killers in uniform” – for having shot dead a teenager six days before.

“I haven’t slept in days now,” he added, sitting beneath oil paintings of previous rectors going back to the 1830s.

Downstairs, other teachers had formed a line on the steps to prevent hardcore demonstrators from breaking into the building and using it, as they had done previously, as a base from which to hurl Molotov cocktails and stones at police.

A week of protests and rioting by students venting fury over the death of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos has thrown Greece into turmoil, causing hundreds of millions of pounds of damage and focusing attention on economic, political and social woes. >>> Matthew Campbell | Sunday, December 14, 2008

Make Sharia Part of UK Law, Says QC

DAILY EXPRESS: SHARIA law will “inevitably” become part of the legal system and work should begin now to incorporate it into British law, a leading barrister said last night.

Stephen Hockman, QC, former chairman of the Bar Council, spoke at a meeting organised by the website Islam4UK, where another speaker was Anjem Choudary, former head of banned fanatical group al-Muhajiroun.

Sharia law has become associated with executions, stonings and hands being cut off.

But Mr Hockman told the Daily Express: “Given our substantial Muslim population, it is vital that we look at ways to integrate Muslim culture into our traditions.

“Otherwise we will find that there is a significant section of our society which is increasingly alienated, with very dangerous results.

“There should perhaps be a standing committee comprising Parliamentarians, lawyers and religious leaders to consider how this could be achieved and what legal changes might be framed.” >>> | Wednesday, November 26, 2008

The Prime Minister named Pakistan as a haven for terrorists planning attacks in Britain, revealing that around three quarters of the most advanced plots monitored by MI5 are have Pakistani links.

Officials say that the Security Service is aware of around 30 serious plots at any given moment, suggesting that at least 21 of them are tied to Pakistani groups.

On a visit to Islamabad, the Prime Minister delived a blunt demand to President Ali Asif Zardari to improve his goverment's work to prevent al-Qaeda and other groups operating in the lawless area that borders Afghanistan.

"The time has come for action not words," Mr Brown told Mr Zardari.

At a press conference, Mr Brown revealed that he had told Mr Zardari that "three quarters of the most serious plots investigated by the British authorities have links to al-Qaeda in Pakistan".

Many known terrorists including Mohammed Siddique Khan, ringleader of the 7/7 bombings, are known to have trained at al-Qaeda inspired camps in the Pakistani border areas.

A New World Order

This essay was first published here on June 27, 2008. In view of the tumultuous events that have happened in the world economy since that time, I thought it was time to re-publish the essay: - Mark
The West isn’t working. This world order isn’t working, either. It’s time for a change. If the West wants to survive, then things will have to change. The way things are going on, the West will be on its knees in a short time, and in short order. At the moment, everything revolves around the Middle East, and around Middle Eastern money and oil, and around Middle Eastern influence.

The culture and ‘civilisation’ of the Middle East is diametrically-opposed to our own; but Middle Eastern petrodollars are being used to buy power and influence here in the West. Therefore, if we wish to preserve our civilisation, if we wish to preserve our way of life, we need change. The claptrap coming out of the White House, the claptrap coming out of Number 10, the claptrap coming out of the Foreign Office is not helpful to the preservation of freedom, liberty, and democracy.

The people at the top are like junkies – they are addicted to Middle Eastern money. They don’t call those people potentates for nothing! It is a sad fact of life in the twenty-first century that our leaders are far more interested in making money than they are in preserving our civilisation.

We have got to the point in which it is far more important to earn a fast buck than it is to re-affirm our commitment to the Judeo-Christian culture which has served us so well - a culture which has brought us civilisation, compassion, liberty, dignity, and justice. Islam, with its barbaric practices of beheading, amputation, lapidation, whipping, and torture doesn’t come anywhere close to Judeo-Christian civilisation. Indeed, it is light years away!

President Bush dreamed of bringing democracy to Iraq, nay, to the Middle East. He has been living in ‘cloud cuckoo land’! As has his partner: Tony Blair. Islam and democracy just don’t mix. A fool would have known this. Apparently, neither the White House nor Number 10 did!

Today, Tony Blair left office. He no longer resides at 10 Downing Street. He is no longer the prime minister of Great Britain. Mercifully! In ten years at the helm, Tony Blair has inflicted a lot of damage on Great Britain. Much of that damage is in the loss of democracy, to say nothing of the uncontrolled borders.

It would appear that the West is being driven by the petrodollars of the Middle East. The tail is wagging the dog! And while this state of affairs exists, there will be no good outcome. No good outcome at all! Inherent in capitalism is greed. Greed is no good principle on which to steer our economy, to say nothing of our civilisation. Now that is not to say that I think that capitalism is bad; it isn’t. But unbridled capitalism needs to be reined in if we wish our freedoms and liberty to proliferate.

Osama bin Laden accuses the United States of being “a paper tiger”. It would appear that there is much truth in this description of our friends’ country; especially since President Bush has run that wonderful country. Why do I say this? Because it has been impotent in stopping the growth of Islam in America, and therefore impotent in helping stop the growth of Islam in the West, because it has failed to stop the influence of Wahhabism in America, and it has failed miserably to stop the uncontrolled growth of Salafism in the States, too. Indeed, in the past ten years, Islam has grown apace in the US, in the UK, and in the West in general. The power and influence of Muslims and the Middle East is at a frighteningly high level! And all the while democracy has been weakened at home.

It is no good trying to bring democracy to another part of the world – a part of the world which can never be democratised while the prophet Muhammad is the people’s guide – and it is no good trying to change the nature of a people, either. The nature of a people depends on the philosophy which guides them. Islam guides Middle Easterners; so, as Islam and democracy are diametrically-opposed, there is little point in trying to bring democracy to that region. For democracy to flourish, the sine qua non is that there be a separation of the temporal from the sacred, a separation of politics and religion. Without that separation, there is absolutely no hope of establishing a democracy. None at all! No, democracy cannot exist without a separation of church, or mosque, and state. It is impossible! What Bush and Blair embarked on could be labelled “mission impossible”! For mission impossible it most certainly was. Here we are, several years later, and nothing, absolutely nothing, has been achieved; and nor will anything be achieved in the future, either. From nothing, comes nothing!

But what bothers me most is this: We are destroying the life we have grown to love and respect. Corruption abounds. Billions of dollars, billions of pounds, are paid to the potentates of the Middle East. Politicians in the West are reluctant to uphold the status quo for fear of upsetting their paymasters. They are also worried that they will not get the lucrative deals after they leave office that they might if they spill the beans. All quite understandable, of course; but all quite disgusting all the same.

If the West is to survive in its present form, if the West is to remain whole and free – and with the number of immigrants that have entered the West, that is a big question! – the West has to sever the umbilical cord which binds us to Middle Eastern oil, which binds us to Middle Eastern funds, which binds us to Middle Eastern influence. Sucking up to Saudis just won’t cut the mustard. We will have to break loose!

There is no other way for the survival of the West, there is no other way for the perpetuation of freedom and liberty and no other way to ensure the dignity of man. If Islam wins the day – which, as things are going at the moment, it most certainly will – then we all have dark daysto look forward to. There is no other way: This world order isn’t working. It’s ‘broke’. And when something is broken, it needs to be fixed. It’s time for a new world order. Now!

>>> bru/ap | 12. Dancing Girls of Lahore Strike over 'Taliban' Law

THE INDEPENDENT: The dancing girls of Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan, are on strike in protest against the tide of Talibanisation that is threatening to destroy an art form that has flourished since the Mughal empire.

The strike, which is supported by the theatres where they perform, was sparked by the decision of Lahore High Court last month to ban the Mujra, the graceful and elaborate dance first developed in the Mughal courts 400 years ago, on the grounds that it is too sexually explicit.

"The Mujra by its very nature is supposed to be a seductive dance," says Badar Alam, a cultural expert. He recalls that attempts were made to ban it during the 1980s. "Gradually, it returned to commercial theatre, mostly by paying off officials. The question remains: does the government have the right to engage in moral policing?"

The government and High Court in particular have no doubt about their right to do just that. They have tried to encourage "family friendly" dances, but once-packed theatres are now near empty, despite dropping their prices from 300 rupees to 25 rupees a seat. >>> By Patrick Cockburn and Issam Ahmed in Lahore | Friday, December 12, 2008

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith Claims Britain Faces Zimbabwe Immigration Influx

THE TELEGRAPH: The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is likely to lead to an influx of immigration into the UK, Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, has warned Cabinet colleagues.

She is said to fear that Zimbabweans desperate to flee the cholera outbreak and Robert Mugabe's regime, are buying false passports in neighbouring countries, where visas are not required for travel to Britain, before heading here.

Foreign Office sources are playing down her claim as "alarmist," leading to the potential for a serious rift within Whitehall.

Officials expressed concerns that the Home Office could use Miss Smith's warnings about the potential arrival of thousands of refugees as an excuse to tighten border controls.

This could make it harder for legitimate asylum seekers escaping Mr Mugabe's brutal police state to reach this country.

The BBC reported that the Zimbabwe was creating "real tension in Whitehall," as the Home Office is said to be calling for the introduction of visas for all countries in the region, a move opposed by the Foreign Office.

Miss Smith has told Cabinet colleagues that people fleeing Zimbabwe are buying false passports in countries such as South Africa and Botswana and using them to travel to the UK. >>> By Rosa Prince, Political Correspondent | December 12, 2008

THE TELEGRAPH: Britain Must Not Abandon the Zimbabwean People to Robert Mugabe

The people of Zimbabwe have suffered long enough. They have had little choice but to stand by helplessly as a corrupt, anti-democratic and incompetent regime has brought their country to its knees.

Robert Mugabe, thirty years ago the darling of the African liberation struggle, is now exposed as a desperate tyrant intent on preserving power at all costs.

When Ian Smith’s government was forced from office it seemed Zimbabwe’s future was bright – and initially it was. The bread basket of southern Africa, its strong economy was underpinned by manufacturing, mining and tourism sectors which were the envy of many more developed nations.

Gradually, greed and political interference of the basest kind wore away those advantages and the past decade has seen Zimbabwe accelerating towards the abyss.

The cholera outbreak which has so far claimed nearly 600 lives – and possibly many more – is just the starkest symptom of that collapse. >>> Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development | December 11, 2008

Bravo Nicolas! Sarkozy Comments Spark Iran Row

BBC: Iran has summoned the French ambassador in Tehran over comments made by the French president about his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Nicolas Sarkozy said earlier this week that he would not be able to shake hands with someone who said Israel had to be wiped off the map.

Ambassador Bernard Poletti was told of Iran's strong objections.

He was told there would be repercussions for relations if such remarks were repeated.

In the speech, given on 8 December on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Mr Sarkozy said: "How is it that a people such as the Iranian people - one of the world's greatest peoples, one of the world's oldest civilisations, sophisticated, cultured, open - have the misfortune of being represented as they are today by some of their leaders?

"I have said this to my friend Kofi [Annan]: I find it impossible to shake hands with somebody who has dared to say that Israel must be wiped off the map. >>> | December 11. 2008

Fresh Clashes Hit Greek Capital

BBC: Greek students have attacked police in the capital, Athens, in the latest outbreak of protests over the killing of a teenaged boy last Saturday.

The authorities say at least one person was injured as protesters threw stones and firebombs at a police station, near the city's main university.

Students are also reported to have set up road blocks in some parts of Athens.

A policeman has been charged over the youth's death. His lawyer says the bullet that killed him was a ricochet.

But the ballistics report has not yet been officially published.

An unnamed police official said that an elderly bystander had been taken to hospital after being struck by a rock in the latest violence.

A further incident was reported outside a university and one of Greece's biggest prisons in the Athens suburb of Koyrdallos.

There were also reports of unrest in Thessaloniki, Greece's second city.

Hundreds of buildings and businesses across the country have been damaged in the five days of rioting. >>> | December 11, 2008

Luxembourg Monarch Muzzled over Euthanasia

THE INDEPENDENT: The people of Luxembourg stripped their beloved monarch of his political powers today after he tried to veto a bill that allows for the legalisation of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Grand Duke Henri, ceremonial ruler of Luxembourg's 470,000 inhabitants, provoked an unprecedented crisis in the sedate territory two weeks ago when he refused to sign the law, apparently for reasons of conscience.

Henri is a devout Catholic. The hereditary monarch's powers are largely nominal but, under the Grand Duchy's constitution, no new legislation can come into force without royal assent. Until a fortnight ago, no member of the dynasty had ever challenged the parliamentary process.

A constitutional amendment approved by parliament yesterday limits the monarch to announcing decisions of parliament, in effect, muzzling the Grand Duke but the move has provoked a debate about the monarchy's future.

"It's just one article in our constitution that's changing but it represents an enormous loss of monarchical rights," Professor Paul Margue, a historian, said. "You might be right to ask what then is the point of having a Grand Duke at all?"

Henri, a handsome, affable 53-year old, has previously seen off a string of scandals, including an affair, but the constitutional crisis triggered by his attachment to traditional Catholic values may have irredeemably tarnished his image. "He's badly overstepped his mark by meddling in politics. No Grand Duke has ever dared to block a law before it's been approved by the parliament," said Lucien Montebrusco, political editor of the Luxembourg daily Tageblatt. Like many, Montebrusco believes Henri may have been egged on by the Catholic Church and by his Cuban wife, Maria-Theresa, a great-niece of the former dictator Fulgencio Batista. >>> By Vanessa Mock in Luxembourg | December 11, 2008

Saudi King Abdullah Calls for Dialogue Within Islam

ASHARQ ALAWSAT: Mina - The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz called for internal dialogue within Islam in a speech delivered Tuesday at the royal palace in Mina during the annual reception for leading Muslim dignitaries attending Hajj.

“Today we are in need of dialogue within the Muslim Ummah itself,” pointing out that “sedition, ignorance, and fanaticism constitute obstacles that are threatening the hopes of Muslims,” said King Abdullah.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdulaziz, stressed that terrorism, which is threatening the entire world, and which is being attributed to Muslims alone, “is caused by extremists who represent no one but themselves even if they put on an Islamic character. Islam is innocent of their acts.” He stressed that this is what makes internal dialogue within Islam necessary so as to achieve a unified stand, promote moderation, eliminate the causes of conflict, and stamp out extremism.

King Abdullah stressed that the goal of the call for interfaith dialogue, for which a conference was set up in Mecca and attended by Muslim scholars, is to further empower Islam and serve humanity. He said, “The fair reception and success the idea has enjoyed makes us more optimistic that its future march will be as successful, God willing.” >>> | December 10, 2008

Anti-Muslim Sentiment on Rise in Holland

DUTCHNEWS: Violence against Muslims in the Netherlands rose considerably last year, according to the latest monitor on racism and extremism published by Leiden University and the Anne Frank Foundation on Wednesday.

The number of violent incidents against Muslims rose to 82 in 2007, from 62 in the preceding year. However the total number of racist attacks last year was down to 187, according to the 306-page report.

According to the Anne Frank Foundation, anti-Muslim sentiment has grown ‘significantly’ in the last year and public opinion about Muslims has become more negative.

The researchers also conclude that the stream of anti-Muslim comments by the PVV party, led by the controversial MP Geert Wilders, and the massive attention they are given in the media, have contributed to Islam phobia in the Netherlands. >>> ©DutchNews | December 10, 2008

Is Britain Being Conquered From the Inside?

THE TRUMPET: Britain has already been invaded by a dangerous enemy, and most Britons don’t even realize it—yet.

In Scotland, exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 mph is generally an infraction penalized by the loss of one’s license. Except, it would seem, if you are a polygamous Muslim husband dashing between homes in an effort to service more than one wife.

That exact scenario occurred earlier this year when a Scottish judge allowed a Muslim husband to retain his license after he was booked for driving 64 mph in a 30 mph zone. “He has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow and sleeps with one one night and stays with the other the next on an alternate basis,” argued Mohammed Anwar’s lawyer. “Without his driving license, he would be unable to do this on a regular basis.”

This episode is a measure of the bloodless cultural and legal invasion by the armies of Islam into British society and Britain’s judicial system.

Never mind the judge’s faulty logic that led to his sanctioning of breaking one law in order to break another. The larger question is: What does a British judge’s acceptance of the Muslim practice of polygamy—even when it leads to the breaking of British law—say about the extent of Islam’s incursion into Britain?Appeasing Muslims and condoning—even embracing—Islamic laws and culture is today effectively a function of the British judicial system and government! >>> Brad MacDonald | December 11, 2008

Ehrenfeld / Abady – Islamic Banking: Is Treasury complicit?

THE WASHINGTON TIMES: If "cash is king," then Middle East coffers are irresistibly enticing. During a recent tour of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt applauded the "growing role" of Arab banks in the U.S. economy. Treasury is seeking buyers for its newly acquired bailout assets because more than $1 trillion in cash is urgently needed to rescue the largest U.S. banks.

However, cash from the Arabian Gulf comes with a vital string attached: Islamic banking, erroneously viewed as an ancient practice. In fact, Islamic banking is a newly invented institution: "Neither classical nor medieval Islamic civilization featured banks in the modern sense, let alone 'Islamic' banks," notes Timur Kuran, professor of economics and law at the University of Southern California. According to the Dinar Standard, "assets managed by Islamic banks are in excess of $700 billion - predominantly concentrated in the Middle East."

Islamic banking took off in the 1970s, but was first concocted by Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna in the 1920s. The stated goal was to penetrate the Western finance system, corrupting it from within in hopes of creating a parallel system to re-establish a global Islamic empire governed by Islamic law (Shariah). Islamic rules of commerce (fiqh al-muamalat) forbid interest (riba) and investing in a prohibited (hara'am) enterprise. They also mandate tithes on wealth (zakat). However, the Koran fails to precisely define these concepts. Imams and ayatollahs differ, for example, on whether riba prohibits all interest or only usurious interest.

While the overhaul of American and Western banking regulations is urgent, Islamic banking cannot be the answer because Muslim clerics - not U.S. laws and regulators - make the rules. In 1969, the Saudis created the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which is now leading the charge for global expansion of Islamic banking and has established new regulatory, accounting and auditing organizations to govern such banks. Notably, the OIC's charter is to "liberate Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa [mosque] from Zionist occupation." >>> Rachel Ehrenfeld and Samuel A Abady | December 11, 2008

Dhimmitude Alert! Which Muslim Capital Will Barack Obama Choose?

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Opinions abound on city the president-elect will pick for his speech

BEIRUT—President-elect Barack Obama says he plans to deliver a major speech in an Islamic capital aimed at improving America's image in the Muslim world.

But choosing the capital will be tricky. The Muslim world is vast and far-flung, governed in many instances by autocratic dictators and riddled with potential political pitfalls for a new president hailed not only at home but around the globe as an agent of change.

Any location would have to be large enough to carry weight with Muslims around the globe, ruling out smaller places such as Ouagadougou, capital of the West African nation of Burkina Faso, or Moroni in the tiny Indian Ocean island of Comoros.

It also would have to be safe, putting cities such as Baghdad, Kabul or Islamabad almost certainly off limits.

Otherwise, analysts can't agree on which capital would best fit the bill. Put a pin in the map of the Islamic world, and almost any site is a potentially controversial choice. >>> By Liz Sly, Tribune correspondent | December 10, 2008

ASSOCIATED PRESS: Obama Wants to 'Reboot America's Image'

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama says he will try to "reboot America's image" among the world's Muslims and will follow tradition by using his entire name — Barack Hussein Obama — in his swearing-in ceremony.

The U.S. image globally has taken a deep hit during President George W. Bush's two terms in office, primarily because of opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, harsh interrogation of prisoners, the indefinite detention of terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and mistreatment of inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Obama promised during his campaign that one of his top priorities would be to work to repair America's reputation worldwide, and that one element of that effort would be a speech delivered in a Muslim capital.

He pledged anew to give such a speech, though he declined to say whether it would happen during his first year in office.

"It's something I intend to follow through on," Obama said in an interview published Wednesday in the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. "We've got a unique opportunity to reboot America's image around the world and also in the Muslim world in particular. So we need to take advantage of that."

Obama said his message would be twofold: that his administration will be unyielding in stamping out terrorist extremism but also "unrelenting in our desire to create a relationship of mutual respect and partnership with countries."

"I think the world is ready for that message," he said in the interview, conducted Tuesday.

During the campaign, Obama repeatedly faced questions about whether he is a Muslim, particularly in whisper campaigns that noted his middle name, that his father is Kenyan, and that he lived for a time as a child in Indonesia. Obama is a practicing Christian.

Asked if he would drop his middle name during his inauguration on Jan. 20, the president-elect said he would not.

"The tradition is that they use all three names and I will follow the tradition, not trying to make a statement on way or another," he said. >>> By Jennifer Loven, ©AP | December 10, 2008

Dhimmitude Alert! Haj Shows Islam’s Message of Justice, Equality: Brown

Why do we keep sending these gut-wrenching messages of goodwill to the Muslim community when they are not reciprocated?

Will the Muslim community send the Christian community a message of goodwill at Christmas? I think we all know the answer to this question!

So for Christ's sake (no blasphemy intended!), stop sucking up to the Muslims, Gord!

SAUDI GAZETTE: LONDON – The British Prime Minister sent his “warm wishes” and greetings to British Muslims on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha.

Gordon Brown in his message to the British Muslim Community said, “For me, the inspirational thing about Haj is the great stirrings for justice that shows in the Ummah. When people are drawn from each corner of the world, inspired by a shared and ancient ideal to act as one in the service of a better world – then it summons in us a truly modern hope that we can build a global society characterized by fairness and cooperation and respect.” “At this special time, we can also reflect upon and celebrate the tremendous contributions of British Muslims to our national life,” he added.

Britain’s foreign secretary, David Miliband also sent his greetings. “As Muslims all over the world, including in Britain, celebrate with their families, it is a good moment to reflect on the message that Eid carries for us all,” Miliband said. “Eid Al-Adha commemorates the sacrifice and steadfastness of Prophet Abraham, forefather of Muslims, Christians and Jews alike. These two qualities, of sacrifice and steadfastness, are ones that must guide what we do,” he said[.] [Source: Saudi Gazetter] | December 10, 2008

Christmas, a Season for Accommodating Islam

RIGHT SIDE NEWS: In England the weather grows colder, children fidget with anticipation, and events are being held to mark a major feast - that's right, Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice. At one Nottingham primary school, it has meant the postponement of the annual nativity play, given the "effect" of many Muslim students remaining at home this week to celebrate:
”In a letter, sent by the staff at Greenwood Junior School, mothers and fathers were told: "It is with much regret that we have had to cancel this year's Christmas performances."

"This is due to the Eid celebrations that take place next week and its effect on our performers."

However, following a barrage of complaints, a second letter was issued saying the show had "not been canceled outright" but has been postponed until the New Year.”
That the Christmas play was shelved in a nation with an officially established Christian church makes it a potent sign of the times. And while secularists always cheer obstacles to the public acknowledgment of religious holidays, they should not be pleased with private faith-based celebrations disrupting the schedules of others. >>> By David J. Church Leader Wants Christians to Celebrate Easter on Same Day

ECUMENICAL NEWS INTERNATIONAL (ENI): Rome – Lebanon-based Armenian Orthodox leader Aram I has at a Vatican meeting with Pope Benedict XVI proposed that the world's churches set a common date for Easter, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

"There are no special doctrinal problems to achieve this goal, but only problems of the calendar," Aram, who heads the Catholicosate of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Church, told journalists in Rome at the end of his 23-27 November visit to Rome.

In most years, Christians celebrate Easter on two different dates. One is marked by most Protestants and Roman Catholics, and the other by most Orthodox churches.

Catholicos Aram said he believed an ecumenical initiative to celebrate Easter on the same day would help give visible expression to Christian unity. >>> Luigi Sandri | December 3, 2008

The Reverse Brain Drain

GLOBEANDMAIL: A collapse of Western financial industries has sent thousands of skilled professionals from immigrant backgrounds to their homelands - a huge shift of knowledge and skills

LONDON — Five months ago, Pankaj Dinodia was on top of the Wall Street boom: At age 25, the Indian immigrant had made it through one of the top U.S. business schools and held an important investment banking position with Goldman Sachs.

Then, in the middle of the summer, he felt the calling. The future didn't look so good in the big Western markets, he decided.

Those calls from his family in New Delhi, urging him to come back and help out with the family accounting business, sounded more sensible. So he gave up his huge bonus and got on a plane.

At the time, his move from the world's most successful investment bank to the poky New Delhi offices of S.R. Dinodia & Co., Chartered Accountants, bewildered his friends and colleagues: It was as if he had abandoned his future.

Now they're all phoning him.

People like Mr. Dinodia are pioneers in the "reverse brain drain," a huge shift of knowledge and skills out of New York and London and back into the developing world. In one of the surprising consequences of the global financial meltdown, the collapse of the Western banking and finance industries has sent thousands of highly skilled professionals from immigrant backgrounds back to their homelands, where they are taking on key roles in emerging economies.

"I have ridden the bubble to the top and got out when things started looking shaky, but a lot of my colleagues have lost their jobs ... the Lehman Brothers of the world, the Bear Stearns of the world are no longer sucking up talent from India but instead sending it back," Mr. Dinodia said from New Delhi the other day.

"So companies here can now hire bankers with the kind of experience we never could have dreamed of employing before the crunch." >>> Doug Saunders | December 11, 2008

Greek Unrest Spreads: Solidarity Protests Across Europe Turn Violent

Photobucket
Demonstrators in Rome. Photo courtesy of SpiegelOnline International

SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: As Greece entered its sixth day of unrest sparked by the police shooting of a 15-year-old boy, violence spread to other parts of Europe on Thursday. Solidarity protests in cities including Rome, Madrid and Copenhagen turned into skirmishes between demonstrators and police.

The unrest that has gripped Greece for days has started to spill over into other European capitals, with arrests made in Rome, Copenhagen and Madrid on Wednesday night after solidarity demonstrations descended into violence.

The situation in Greece itself had calmed somewhat by mid-morning Thursday following pre-dawn violence which saw students clash with police. Youth threw stones and fire bombs at police in the early hours of the morning in the sixth day of protests since the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos ingited anger over police brutality. The events have also stoked public anger with the government -- resentment that was already widespread following a series of financial scandals and unpopular reforms.

Much of the worst violence has been perpetrated by young anarchists, the so-called Black Bloc. But there is growing anger among the wider public about the inability of the government to control the situation and restore calm. On Wednesday a general strike across Greece halted flights and closed banks, schools and some hospital services.

Meanwhile, flourishes of violence spread to other parts of Europe. In Istanbul about a dozen Turkish left-wing protestors daubed red paint over the front of the Greek consulate, while the country's embassies in Rome and Moscow were attacked by fire bombers and stone throwers. In the Italian university town of Bologna, five police officers were reported injured after clashing with demonstrators outside the Greek consulate. >>> smd -- with wire reports | December 11, 2008

GLOBEANDMAIL: Ugly Tactics of the Rioters Now Coming Under Attack

Watching television and video coverage of the riots that have swept through Greece this week, it is hard not to notice something curious: The police, for the most part, do not seem to be fighting back.

Except when stoned or pelted with Molotov cocktails themselves, they often left the rioters alone to smash store windows and set fire to buildings.

That apparent restraint springs from a November night in 1973 when the forces of a six-year-old dictatorship battered their way onto the campus of the Athens Polytechnic. No one knows the exact toll, but something like 40 people were killed, and the anger over their deaths helped bring down the military government.

Ever since, student protesters have enjoyed a special status in Greece. Lionized for bringing down the regime of the colonels, they take to the streets with a frequency and a ferocity that is unusual even in Europe. >>> Marcus Gee | December 10, 2008

TIMESONLINE: Greek Violence Spreads across Europe

Suspected anarchist protests which have dogged Greece for the last week spread outside the country today, with mobs causing violent scenes in Italy, Spain, Russia, Denmark and Turkey.

Greek diplomatic missions were vandalised in the attacks, while police, local authority and media representatives were also targeted in what appeared a co-ordinated escalation.

The upsurge took place as protests continued in Greece following the killing last Saturday of Alexandros Grigoropoulos.
Today, mobs pelted 20 police stations with rocks and bottles, overturned cars and blocked streets in central Athens. Police responded with tear gas as sporadic violence persisted amid Greece’s worst rioting in decades.

Four people were detained and at least one man was hospitalised with injuries, authorities said. In a gesture which appeared designed to ease the violence, MPs held a minute of silence for Mr Grigoropoulos.

Yet what were originally relatively localised protests over the killing have since been hijacked by mobs of self-styled anarchists who authorities say are looking for trouble, and today they spread out of Greece for the first time.

In Denmark, a total of 32 people were arrested in Copenhagen after protests turned violent while, in Madrid and Barcelona, several police officers were injured and 11 people were arrested following clashes.

The violence also spread to Turkey, where a dozen protesters were reported to have painted the Turkish-flag red on the Greek consulate. In Moscow and Rome, meanwhile, petrol bombs were reported to have been aimed at Greek Embassies.

Meanwhile, a crew of television journalists from Russia were attacked by 50 youths as they filmed clashes in Exarchia, Greece, a known hotbed of student radicalism. One correspondent from the NTV television station was injured. >>> David Byers | December 11, 2008
