Russia Outlaws ‘International LGBT Public Movement’ as Extremist

GUARDIAN INTERNATIONAL: Human rights activists say supreme court’s vague wording provides wide scope for persecution

The head of the Russian LGBT Network, Igor Kochetkov, centre, says ‘all legal activities of LGBT organisations will be impossible in Russia’. Photograph: AP

Russia’s supreme court has outlawed what it called an “international LGBT public movement” as extremist, in a landmark ruling that representatives of gay and transgender people warn will lead to arrests and prosecutions of the already repressed LGBTQ+ community.

The ruling in effect outlaws LGBTQ+ activism in a country growing increasingly conservative since the start of the war in Ukraine. The “extremist” label could mean that gay, lesbian, transgender or queer people living in Russia could receive lengthy prison sentences if deemed by the authorities to be part of the so called “international LGBT public movement”.

The justice ministry earlier this month filed a request that the “international LGBT movement” be labelled extremist, without clarifying what it meant under the term, which is not a registered entity in Russia but rather a broad definition used by the Russian authorities. » | Pjotr Sauer | Thursday, November 30, 2023

Bash the shit out of the weak, the oppressed and the downtrodden, why don’t you? It’s always a good idea, because it makes the weak look strong. Thereafter, these weaklings often proceed to quote Jesus and Christianity as justification for their cruel and ruthless behaviour and persecution. But never forget: Jesus would abhor the persecution of gay people. Jesus, lest we forget, besought us all to be mindful and caring of the weak and oppressed. For this, He assured us, is the way to honour God, our Maker! Anyone who thinks that he is doing God’s work by oppressing any weak group in society is not on the straight path. In fact, he is on the road to perdition! Repent and repeal these ridiculous laws! Cease and desist meting out such cruelty! – © Mark Alexander

Henry Kissinger - Secrets of a Superpower | DW Documentary

Nov 30, 2023 | For years, Henry Kissinger shaped US foreign policy like no other statesman. As National Security Adviser and Secretary of State under US President Richard Nixon, the German-born politician wielded America’s power with severity.

During his tenure as National Security Adviser and Secretary of State under US President Richard M. Nixon, the United States escalated attacks on the enemy Vietcong in the Vietnam War. In the years that followed, the conflict claimed the lives of another 100,000 Vietnamese and more than 25,000 American soldiers. The neighboring and neutral nation of Cambodia was also bombed by US planes in contravention of international law. Kissinger eventually negotiated an end to the Vietnam War in secret talks with North Vietnamese leader Lê Đức Thọ. Both men were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 (an honor accepted by Kissinger but refused by Lê Đức Thọ).

With regard to China, Kissinger was viewed as an architect of détente and a pioneer of rapprochement between Washington and Beijing, a process he paved the way for in secret trips to the Middle Kingdom. When the Yom Kippur War broke out in 1973 with the Egyptian and Syrian attack on Israel, Kissinger once again assumed the role of mediator and brought about a cessation of hostilities.

Kissinger’s tenure also witnessed the Chilean army’s coup d’état against President Salvador Allende, supported by the CIA with the full knowledge of the Secretary of State. Kissinger was also criticized for green lighting the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in violation of international law.

Although he left government in 1977, Henry Kissinger was one of the chief advisers to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. Now a Harvard professor, Kissinger, who was born in the Bavarian city of Fürth, personally knew almost all the key statesmen and women of the second half of the 20th century and was a close friend of former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.

In 2007, documentary filmmaker Stephan Lamby had the opportunity to quiz Henry Kissinger on his political life and actions. The outcome was an extraordinary conversation about power and morals. The meticulously researched film also hears the views of many distinguished contemporary witnesses, including George W. Bush, Alexander Haig, James R. Schlesinger, Helmut Schmidt, Norman Mailer and Carl Bernstein. The film makes use of private Super 8 footage and secret wiretaps from the Oval Office providing some unusual insights into the White House of the 1970s. The secrets of superpower America, bombings, CIA operations, undercover missions to infiltrate enemy governments, the wiretapping of employees - all cast in a new light by the recollections of a man at the center of power: Henry Kissinger.

Balkan Royals | Aristocracy after Communism

Nov 29, 2023 | Balkan Royals - The royal families are back in the Balkans. Once ousted by the communists, they now enjoy a high reputation again. Externally, they act as representatives of their states; internally, as moral and neutral institutions.

Balkan Royals (2018)
Director: Alix François Meier
Genre: Documentary
Country: Germany Language: English

Synopsis:

After the fall of the iron curtain, the aristocrats experience an impressive comeback in some of the post-communist states. The documentation portrays three examples of old royal dynasties that became important and powerful in the post-communism and brings its history back to life.

. The film introduces Bulgaria’s Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Montenegro’s heir apparent, Nicholas, Crown Prince of Montenegro as well as the already deceased Michael I of Romania and his daughter Crown Princess Margareta as representatives for the present and past of three east-European dynasties.

The aristocracy was ostracized in the communist countries of eastern Europe and central Europe. In times of focusing on the own national identity, the Royals became in different ways more and more important. On the one hand, the royal houses are an essential part of the country’s history and were responsible for a lot of historiography in the regions they ruled and help today’s countries to have something to identify with. On the other hand, their representatives stand stability the countries had long waited for.

Next Generation of Billionaires Collect More Wealth from Inheritance than Work, Says UBS

THE GUARDIAN: Swiss bank favoured by super-rich says 1,000 billionaires are likely to pass on $5.2tn to their children over next 20 years

Newly minted billionaires have collected more of their wealth from the deaths of relatives than through their own work and entrepreneurship, according to a Swiss bank favoured by the super-rich.

Of the 137 people who became billionaires in the 12 months to this April, 53 inherited a combined $150.8bn (£119bn) from their family, the report by UBS found. This exceeds the combined $140.7bn created by “84 new self-made” billionaires over the same period.

The bank said it was the first time in the nine-year history of its annual report on the fortunes of the richest 0.00004% of society that “the next generation of billionaires accumulated more wealth through inheritance than entrepreneurship”.

Benjamin Cavalli, the head of strategic clients at UBS Global Wealth Management, said: “This is a theme we expect to see more of over the next 20 years, as more than 1,000 billionaires pass an estimated $5.2tn to their children.” » | Rupert Neate, Wealth correspondent | Thursday, November 30, 2023

Elon Musk Hurls Defiant, Profanity-laced Retort at Fleeing Advertisers

THE GUARDIAN: At New York event Wednesday, X owner had choice words for Walt Disney and others who pulled ads over antisemitic content

Elon Musk has issued a defiant and profanity-laced message for the advertisers who pulled money from X in recent weeks amid a backlash over his endorsement of an antisemitic tweet and reports of increased hate speech on the platform.

Video of the interview, which was widely circulated, showed that Musk said, “Don’t advertise,” on Wednesday during an on-stage interview at an event in New York. “If someone’s going to try to blackmail me with advertising, blackmail me with money, go fuck yourself.”

Musk’s combative remarks came as part of the New York Times’ DealBook Summit. Moments before, the CEO had offered a moment of contrition for his 15 November tweet that endorsed an antisemitic post on X. He said it had been perhaps his worst post in his history of messages that included many “foolish” ones – including a 2018 tweet that cost him $40m in fines from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Henry Kissinger Is Dead at 100; Shaped Nation’s Cold War History

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The most powerful secretary of state of the postwar era, he was both celebrated and reviled. His complicated legacy still resonates in relations with China, Russia and the Middle East.

Henry A. Kissinger, the scholar-turned-diplomat who engineered the United States’ opening to China, negotiated its exit from Vietnam, and used cunning, ambition and intellect to remake American power relationships with the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, sometimes trampling on democratic values to do so, died on Wednesday at his home in Kent, Conn. He was 100.

His death was announced in a statement by his consulting firm.

Few diplomats have been both celebrated and reviled with such passion as Mr. Kissinger. Considered the most powerful secretary of state in the post-World War II era, he was by turns hailed as an ultrarealist who reshaped diplomacy to reflect American interests and denounced as having abandoned American values, particularly in the arena of human rights, if he thought it served the nation’s purposes.

He advised 12 presidents — more than a quarter of those who have held the office — from John F. Kennedy to Joseph R. Biden Jr. With a scholar’s understanding of diplomatic history, a German-Jewish refugee’s drive to succeed in his adopted land, a deep well of insecurity and a lifelong Bavarian accent that sometimes added an indecipherable element to his pronouncements, he transformed almost every global relationship he touched.

At a critical moment in American history and diplomacy, he was second in power only to President Richard M. Nixon. He joined the Nixon White House in January 1969 as national security adviser and, after his appointment as secretary of state in 1973, kept both titles, a rarity. When Nixon resigned, he stayed on under President Gerald R. Ford. » | David E. Sanger | David E. Sanger covers the White House and national security. A U.S.-Iranian Miscalculation Could Lead to a Larger War, Officials Say

THE NEW YORK TIMES: U.S. forces and militias backed by Iran have launched tit-for-tat attacks, fueling concerns as Israeli forces also clash with Iranian-backed groups.

Neither Washington nor Tehran wants the conflict in the Gaza Strip to trigger a wider war in the region, officials in both capitals say.

But in the seven weeks since the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, Iranian-backed militias have launched more than 70 rocket and drone attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria. The Pentagon, for its part, has responded with four rounds of airstrikes, killing as many as 15 people, U.S. officials say.

National security officials fear a miscalculation amid tit-for-tat attacks, combined with each side’s belief that the other does not want a larger fight, could trigger exactly that: a regional conflict, just two years after the United States ended 20 years of war in the Middle East and South Asia. » | Helene Cooper, Eric Schmitt and Julian E. Reports Say Pope Francis Is Evicting U.S. Cardinal From His Vatican Home

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Word of the action against Cardinal Raymond Burke came after the prelate’s increasingly pointed critiques of the reform-minded pope.

Almost as soon as Pope Francis became the head of the Roman Catholic church in 2013, Raymond Burke, an American cardinal, emerged as his leading critic from within the church, becoming a de facto antipope for frustrated traditionalists who believed Francis was diluting doctrine.

Francis frequently demoted and stripped the American cleric of influence, but this month, the pope apparently finally had enough, according to one high-ranking Vatican official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Francis told a meeting of high-ranking Vatican officials that he intended to throw the cardinal out of his Vatican-subsidized apartment and deprive him of his salary as a retired cardinal.

The news of the possible eviction was first reported by the conservative Italian newspaper La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana, which is close to Cardinal Burke and recently sponsored a conference featuring the prelate criticizing a major meeting of bishops convened by Francis. The newspaper’s report comes only weeks after Francis removed another vocal conservative critic, Joseph Strickland, the bishop of Tyler, Texas, after a Vatican investigation into the governance of his diocese. » | Jason Horowitz and Ruth Graham | Jason Horowitz reported from Vatican City, and Ruth Graham from Dallas.| Tuesday, November 28, 2023

UK Should Rejoin EU to ‘Fix’ Brexit, Says Ursula von der Leyen

The United Kingdom should rejoin the European Union to “fix” Brexit, Ursula von der Leyen has said, after Labour pledged to forge closer ties with the bloc if elected.

The European Commission president said “we goofed it up” when asked if Britain could ever reverse Brexit on Tuesday night in Brussels.

She was speaking amid much improved UK relations since the signing of Rishi Sunak’s new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland in February and after the shock victory of Geert Wilders, who wants the Netherlands to leave the EU, in Dutch elections last week.

“First of all, thank God, with the Windsor agreement, we had a new beginning for old friends. Very important,” Mrs von der Leyen said at an event hosted by the Politico website.

“And then I must say, I keep telling my children, you have to fix it. We goofed it up. You have to fix it. So I think here, too, the direction of travel, my personal opinion is clear.” » | James Crisp, Europe Editor | Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Government Offices in EU Can Ban Wearing of Religious Symbols, Court Rules

GUARDIAN EUROPE: Decision made in case of Muslim employee in Belgium states that restrictions must be applied equally

Government offices across the EU can ban employees from wearing religious symbols, such as Islamic headscarves, in the interest of neutrality, the EU’s top court has ruled, though it stressed that such restrictions must be applied equally to all employees and fit within the legal context of each member state.

The decision, published by the court of justice of the European Union on Tuesday, said such bans were permissible in order to enforce an “entirely neutral administrative environment”.

However, the court said that bans on clothing or symbols linked to philosophical or religious beliefs had to be applied evenly. “Such a rule is not discriminatory if it is applied in a general and indiscriminate manner to all of that administration’s staff and is limited to what is strictly necessary,” it said. » | Ashifa Kassam, European community affairs correspondent | Wednesday, November 29, 2023

Iran Execution of Child Condemned by UN Human Rights Office

GUARDIAN EUROPE: Seventeen-year-old Hamidreza Azari was executed along with Milad Zohrevand, 22, as UN agency calls for moratorium on capital punishment

The United Nations said Tuesday it deplored the executions of a 17-year-old and a 22-year old in Iran and urged Tehran to immediately stop applying the death penalty.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was troubled by Friday’s executions. “The execution of Hamidreza Azari, who was accused of murder, is the first reported execution of an alleged child offender in Iran this year,” spokesperson Elizabeth Throssell said in a statement.

She reminded Tehran of its obligation under international conventions to prohibit death sentences and their implementation for crimes committed by individuals below the age of 18.

“We are also troubled by the execution, on the same day, of 22-year-old Milad Zohrevand – the eighth person to be executed in the context of the September 2022 protests,” said Throssell.

“Available information indicates that his trial lacked the basic requirements for due process under international human rights law. There are also troubling reports that Zohrevand’s parents were arrested following his execution.

France to Ban Smoking on All Beaches in Effort to Create ‘Tobacco-free Generation’

GUARDIAN EUROPE: Public parks, forests and areas near schools will also become smoke-free as part of nationwide move

France is to ban smoking on all beaches, as well as in public parks, forests and near schools, after Emmanuel Macron promised to create “the first tobacco-free generation” by 2032.

“From now on, no-smoking areas will be the norm,” said the health minister, Aurélien Rousseau.

There are already 7,200 tobacco-free areas in France – including in Nice, on the French Riviera, which was the first to establish a cigarette-free beach in 2012 with the approval of France’s League Against Cancer.

The government said that instead of smoke-free areas being decided by individual local authorities, central government would introduce a nationwide ban. “We are now shifting the responsibility and establishing a principle which will become the rule,” Rousseau said.

Taxes on cigarettes will be increased, with a pack of 20, now priced at about €11 (£9.50), rising to €12 by 2025 and €13 the following year. » | Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Tuesday, November 28, 2023

It was bad enough that the Anglo-Saxon world was working overtime to kill off the concept of joie de vivre; now, Macron’s government is also hell-bent on taking la joie out of la vie too! Clearly, the end is nigh for freedom in the West. Maybe Macron should think of changing the motto Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité into just Égalité, Fraternité, because liberty in France is clearly being eroded.

I think that this is a very unwise move on Macron’s part at this time because this could help sweep Marine Le Pen to power at the next election. Populists are already gaining strength right across the Continent anyway. This will surely help populist parties become even stronger. – © Mark Alexander

November 2023

New Zealand’s New Government Says It Will Scrap Smoking Ban

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The law, celebrated as a model for other countries, would have eventually made tobacco illegal.

New Zealand’s new right-wing government has said it will repeal a law that would have gradually banned all cigarette sales in the country over the course of several decades.

The law, passed by a previous government led by Jacinda Ardern, a prime minister who became an international liberal icon, took effect this year and was celebrated as a potential model that other countries might someday follow. It would have gradually introduced changes in retail cigarette sales and licensing over several years until tobacco could eventually no longer be legally sold in New Zealand.

By Jan. 1, 2027, the law would have made it illegal to sell tobacco products like cigarettes, to anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 2009, according to the government. The law would then have gradually raised the smoking age, year by year, until it covered the entire population.

But last week, the new government said in published agreements between the three coalition partners that it would repeal the law, without explaining why.

The incoming finance minister, Nicola Willis, later told Radio New Zealand that the Ardern government’s plans to restrict sales of tobacco and reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes could have led to a “massive black market.” » | Mike Ives and Natasha Frost | Tuesday, November 28, 2023

Even though I am no longer a smoker, this is about the most welcome news I have heard in a long time. Why? Because it may signal the start of a return to common sense in matters related to smoking and the enjoyment of tobacco products. In recent years, one has been able to feel the ever-tightening grip of the health Nazis – they have been choking off all pleasures and enjoyment in life.

For very many people, a smoke is one of life’s daily pleasures. Indeed for some less fortunate people, it can be one of the few pleasures they can look forward to after a hard day’s work. What gives these do-gooding health Nazis the right to deny these people this simple pleasure?

If I were elected into high office, I would slash the taxes on cigarettes and tobacco asap. The enjoyment of a cigarette has been turned into a pleasure that only the privileged class can afford! In years gone by, a cigarette could be enjoyed by people in all classes and strata of society – from royalty right down to the coal miner, from the film star right down to the shop assistant.

The anti-smoking zealots go on and on about the carcinogens in cigarettes and tobacco. Yeh, yeh! We know all about it. So many of our products are actually carcinogenic, not just cigarettes. So are we going to ban those products, too? These health fanatics have harped on about the dangers of smoking for so long now, so how could we not know ALL about the dangers? What they are very sly and secretive about, though, is that there can be certain advantages to smoking cigarettes IN MODERATION. For example, smoking may have a protective effect against Parkinson’s disease. (Click here.) It may have a protective effect in Alzheimer’s disease, too. (Click here.) And that it helps ward off obesity is also well-known. In fact, in years gone by, many a lady would take up the smoking habit to stay slim! Being slim, in turn, helps ward off type-2 diabetes.

None of these facts mean that it is necessarily a good idea to smoke cigarettes. That is not what I am saying. But we need to get these things into perspective. Anyone reading a newspaper article on cigarette smoking would probably conclude that all cigarette smokers end up with lung cancer. But this is not the case. About 10% of HEAVY smokers contract lung cancer. Maybe up to 20%. (Click here.)

But it is interesting to note that in Japan, despite very high smoking rates, lung cancer rates are lower! This is known as the Japanese paradox. (Click here for further information.)

There are other health benefits too!

Do I advocate smoking? No! I certainly do not. But I certainly think that smoking a cigarette is preferable to snorting cocaine or being addicted to opioids, or any other substance. As always, the devil is in the dose.

But I am against the war that is being waged on smoking and smokers for political reasons, too. I am anti-Nanny State. I also am convinced that banning smoking in all public places and making all people paranoid about “second-hand smoke” leads to loneliness in society. People these days are afraid of their own shadows! Snowflakes all! – © Mark Alexander

Now Macron wants to get in on the anti-smoking act! But will the French tolerate being bossed around by the state?

Rudy Rochman: My Time in a Nigerian Prison | Wine with Adam

May 3, 2023 | Host Adam Bellos sat down with special guest and close friend Rudy Rochman, an Israeli-American activist and filmmaker, to talk about his time in prison in Nigeria. In July 2021, Rudy was detained along with three others and spent several weeks in jail while filming the Igbo Jewish community in Nigeria. Automatic weapons, men in ski masks, fear of execution, unmarked vehicles, Shabbatm. Chabad, Kosher food - it is a harrowing story that you won't want to miss.

Filming the Jewish community of Nigeria is part of a larger project called 'We Were Never Lost", a documentary film series highlighting the Jewish roots and heritage of various communities in Africa. Rochman hopes the film series can revitalize Jewish identity and story even for Jews who are not from these communities.

The conversation was accompanied by a tasting of Shilo Mosaic 2019, a red blend from the Shilo Winery in Israel.

Sunak Risks Fuelling Inflation with High Taxes and Brexit Red Tape, Retailers Warn

THE GUARDIAN: Shop price inflation eased to 4.3% in November but ministers’ plans could lead to higher prices, BRC says

The UK’s largest retailers have warned Rishi Sunak that his government risks prolonging the cost of living crisis by driving up the cost of doing business on the high street with Brexit red tape and higher taxes.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said a number of measures laid out by the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, in last week’s autumn statement risked adding to inflation next year.

After soaring to a 41-year high last autumn, inflation has fallen back before this year’s pivotal Christmas shopping season. The BRC said its measure of annual shop price inflation eased for the sixth month in a row to 4.3% in November, down from 5.2% in October. The decline does not mean shop prices are going down, only that they are rising less rapidly.

However, the industry trade body warned that retailers were facing headwinds in 2024 from “government-imposed” measures – including tax increases and Brexit red tape – which risked fuelling inflation.

The cost of managing post-Brexit import checks and labelling rules, due to come into force next year, are also likely to be passed on to shoppers, it said. » | Richard Partington, Economics correspondent | Tuesday, November 28, 2023

Sunak is superrich; unfortunately, however, he is not supersmart! In today's interconnect world, no one who is supersmart would embrace the silly notion of Brexit! To do so is tantamount to displaying geopolitical ignorance. The pursuit of Brexit, therefore, was, is, and will forever remain a fool's mission! Anyone who thinks that this small, post-imperial nation with a rapidly ageing population can become the economic powerhouse of the world with super high levels of economic growth is deluded, economically illiterate and, quite frankly, foolish. To talk, as Jeremy Hunt did, of turbo-charging economic growth shows us that the Chancellor is given both to bouts of fantasy and to bouts of hallucination, both possibly in equal measure!

There is only one route to economic success for this über-proud nation and that is inside the European Union. No imaginative, magical thinking is going to change this fact; for indeed, a fact it truly is. Indeed, it is not only a fact, but a harsh reality.

Belonging to the European Union is like belonging to the European family of nations, to which we indubitably belong whether we are inside of it or outside of it. The advantages of belonging to the European family from the inside are incalculable, both in economic and political terms. I therefore say to all, my fellow countrymen, and to my brothers and sisters in Europe, here and now: Brexit must be reversed as quickly as possible. Both for the good of this nation and for the good of Europe itself. This nation is stonger in Europe and Europe is stronger when we are in it. Europe needs to be whole, it needs to be free, and it needs to be strong. The stronger and the more united Europe can be, the better. Only when working together, each nation being as helpful and co-operative with the other as is possible — or as the Arabs would say, working as one hand — can Europe ever hope to be geopolitically strong and powerful.

I repeat: Brexit must be reversed as quickly as possible. No ifs, no buts. Der Brexit muß schnellstens rückgängig gemacht werden. Le Brexit doit être annulé le plus rapidement possible. – © Mark Alexander

Lord Hague Comes Out against ‘Disturbing’ UAE Attempt to Buy The Telegraph

THE TELEGRAPH: Former Tory leader stresses that allowing effective foreign state ownership of a major newspaper is ‘going too far‘

Lord Hague has described The Telegraph’s proposed takeover by Abu Dhabi as “disturbing” and one that “should be prevented”.

The former foreign secretary called on Lucy Frazer, the Culture Secretary, to intervene by triggering a regulatory investigation in the public interest.

Writing in The Times, Lord Hague stressed that while there was “more to admire” about the United Arab Emirates (UAE) “than to fear”, allowing effective foreign state ownership of a major newspaper was “going too far”.

Lloyds Banking Group, which took control of The Telegraph and The Spectator in June from the Barclay family, is pursuing a £1.2 billion deal to hand over control of the titles to RedBirdIMI, a fund backed by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the UAE vice-president.

The proposed transaction has fuelled concerns over press freedom, given the UAE’s authoritarian leadership and track record of media censorship. Most senior Tory to come out against UAE deal » | Robert Mendick, Chief Reporter | Monday, November 27, 2023

Parthenon Marbles Row: Rishi Sunak Cancels Meeting with Greek PM

THE GUARDIAN: Tory source says ‘it became impossible for meeting to go ahead’ after Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged return of antiquities to Athens

Greece’s prime minister has criticised the decision of his British counterpart Rishi Sunak to cancel planned talks at which he had hoped to raise the issue of the Parthenon marbles, as disagreements over the antiquities erupted with renewed vigour.

As aides described Sunak’s move as “wrong and undignified”, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is visiting London, voiced irritation at the scheduled Downing Street meeting being called off at the 11th hour.

“I [want to] express my annoyance at the fact that the British prime minister cancelled our scheduled meeting a few hours before it was due to take place,” the centre-right leader said in a statement released by his Maximou office as the diplomatic row intensified.

“Greece and Britain are united by traditionally strong ties of friendship and the framework of our bilateral relations is exceptionally broad. The views of Greece on the Parthenon sculptures are well known.

“I had hoped to have the opportunity to discuss them with my British counterpart along with other international challenges: Gaza; Ukraine; the climate crisis; migration.”

The statement ended with Mitsotakis berating Sunak for failing to rise to the challenge of discussing the fate of antiquities that have spawned the west’s longest running cultural row. “Whoever believes in the correctness and justice of his views is never afraid of opposing arguments,” it read. » | Helena Smith in Athens | Monday, November 27, 2023

Antisemitismus 1938 - Verbotene Bilder vom Pogrom | Terra X

Nov 27, 2023 | Our ancestors’ stories along with the explanation of our sages can unlock the potential of Jewish & Arab relations and heal the family trauma that has prevented us from achieving true unity.

There is no reality where Israelis or Palestinians will disappear, so in order for either to succeed, both must take the others’ injustices and aspirations into consideration to build a holistic future reality.

Palestinians must understand that externalizing their pain by attacking Israel/Jews physically or ideologically may only be successful in getting more of the world to hate Israel/Jews, but will never solve any of their problems or grant them any of their desires, neither on the short or long term.

Israelis must comprehend that although their self-determination movement was successful through the creation of Israel, simultaneously due to war a huge injustice to the Palestinians was experienced and now that Israel today has the power, it also has the responsibly to correct the reality for all living beings on this Land, including and especially their Palestinian cousins.

Both sides have hateful movements amongst their ranks who've come to conclusions, mostly due to their experienced traumas, that the other side is not only their source of suffering but a direct obstacle standing in front of the future they seek to realize.

Maybe the story of Isaac & Ishmael can give insight on how to release Israelis & Palestinians from the matrix they are trapped in.

Blood Money: Switzerland's Nazi Gold

Nov 26, 2020 | The only documentary to tell the full story of the Swiss Banks, Jewish money, and Nazi gold. It has been called the most cynical bank robbery in history, the ultimate inside job. Swiss banks accepted Jewish life-savings -- smuggled to neutral Switzerland for hiding from Nazi terror, only to use the very same secrecy laws to prevent Jewish survivors of the Holocaust and their heirs from recovering their rightful money.

"Blood Money" reveals Switzerland's Faustian bargain to become Hitler's bankers, financing the Nazi war machine, and ultimately prolonging World War II.

In a moving, true-life tale every bit as breathtaking as a best-selling international thriller, "Blood Money" reveals previously unknown details of history's biggest swindle, including an examination of the role of the secretive Bank of International Settlements, run by American, Thomas McKittrick, and the part that the bank played in laundering gold for the Nazis in Switzerland.

The film leads the viewers through the extraordinary events, up through the shredding of documents by the Swiss banks, to the resignation of the Swiss Ambassador to the United States, and the exclusively recorded summit of Jewish, Swiss and U.S. officials as they meet for the historic resolution.

Drawing on firsthand accounts from exiled Russian business tycoons, writers and politicians, as well as the exhaustive research of scholar and best-selling “Putin’s Kleptocracy” author Karen Dawisha, the film examined troubling episodes in Putin’s past, from alleged money-laundering activities and ties to organized crime, to a secret personal fortune said to be in the billions.

New Zealand Smoking Ban Scrapped by Government in Shock Reversal - BBC News

Nov 27, 2023 | New Zealand's new government says it plans to scrap the nation's world-leading smoking ban to fund tax cuts, a reversal strongly criticised by health experts.

The legislation, introduced under the previous Jacinda Ardern-led government, would have banned cigarette sales next year to anyone born after 2008.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in New Zealand, and the policy had aimed to stop young generations from picking up the habit.

Some common sense on smoking from a government at last! This generational smoking ban was both draconian and undemocratic. It was a hare-brained idea from the very start.

I write as an ex-smoker. I gave up smoking successfully in April 2022. But even so, I am implacably opposed to banning cigarette smoking for future generations. This ban is a socialist-style policy. Boy! Don’t socialists like to interfere in people's private lives! Socialists and people like Rishi Sunak! We in the UK need a policy reversal on this stupid ban as well.

There are far worse things for young people to do than enjoy a smoke. Taking drugs, for example. Only last week, I posted a DW documentary on the problems that Germany is facing with cocaine use. (Click here to watch the hair-raising documentary.) Truly, if the worst a person does in this life twixt cradle and grave is enjoy a cigarette and a drink of alcohol, then I would say that he/she is doing pretty well. I really am sick and tired of this obsession with smoking and smokers and I am also sick and tired of the Nanny State poking its nose in people's private lives. Have people forgotten that it is healthy to have some pleasure from life? Who the hell wants to live forever anyway, and end up in an old people's home, ga-ga, and being fed by some nurse? There is such a thing as enjoying the journey of life. More power to the new New Zealand government which has had the courage to swim against the tide and overturn Jacinda Adern's stupid law. – © Mark Alexander

Shedding Generations of Jewish Trauma... w/ Rudy Rochman

Dec 9, 2022 | In this episode of In Search Of More, Eli Nash sits down with Jewish-Isreal Rights Activist, Rudy Rochman. They discuss how to deal with generations of Jewish Trauma, how the Jewish people need to fight back, and how when united, the Jewish people can conquer anything or anyone.

This is a truly excellent and truly informative discussion. Rudy Rochman never fails to impress me with his affable and agreeable manner and the way he deals with situations and his foes. He is very articulate and pleasing to listen to; and his intellect never fails to impress, either. I am hearing Eli Nash speak for the first time; but he, too, is extremely impressive.

That there is so much anti-Semitism in the UK saddens me greatly. Until recently, I wasn’t aware that it was such a problem in this country. Listening to this discussion has been an eye-opener for me, especially regarding anti-Semitism. No one I know is anti-Semitic. Thank God! On the contrary, everyone I know is pro the Jewish community; they are acutely aware of all the suffering of the Jews in the diaspora throughout the ages. I hope and trust that these two gentlemen don't think that all Brits are like those awful people they encountered in London and Manchester; thankfully, we are not.
