The $20 Trillion Lie? The Real Reason US Job Growth Just Collapsed

Oct 3, 2026 | With payroll growth stalling at 29,000 jobs and gas prices hovering at record highs, the contrast between official economic messaging and ground-level reality has never been wider. This analysis examines how capital-intensive AI infrastructure (like SoftBank and OpenAI’s Project Stargate) is masking broader fatigue across traditional industries like retail and transportation. We explore why mega-data centers fail to generate 20th-century factory employment, how foreign trade pledges are misclassified as domestic investments, and what a 17% approval rating on the cost of living means for the upcoming midterm elections.

The Economic Rights Americans Never Got But Desperately Need (w/ Susan Neiman)

October 2, 2026

Even though I, until now, have never voted for a socialist government believe this, or not, but at the time, I was one of Thatcher’s greatest fans!—but in my opinion, America needs a good dose of socialism to begin to try and correct the damage that Trump has done. It needs socialism badly! The best man for the White House, in my opinion, would be Bernie Sanders who, by European standards, is moderate indeed. Just a little left of centre. —© Mark Alexander

Rob Groves: Andy Burnham Just Changed the Brexit Conversation

Oct 3, 2026 | Andy Burnham has done what no prime minister has done in ten years: he's admitted Brexit has done more harm than good, and put full EU membership back on the table. Nigel Farage claims it's the biggest boost of his career. So why do more than half of Reform UK's own voters think Britain has drifted too far from Europe?

In this video, I look at how Burnham has wrong-footed Farage, and then take a hard, honest look at what it would really take to get Britain back into the EU. That covers how warm the welcome from Brussels, Paris and Madrid really is, the barriers in the way, the price of readmission, and a realistic best-case timeline.

Well said. What I want is a full return. Farage must be quaking in his little boots and puffing away like crazy! 😊 — © Mark Alexander

Could Russia’s Kaliningrad Threats Trigger a Nuclear Crisis with NATO? | DW News

Oct 2, 2026 | Russia has warned NATO that it could use nuclear weapons if the alliance attempts to isolate the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. President Vladimir Putin has now said that if Russian territory comes under direct attack, the use of “all types of weapons” at Moscow’s disposal would immediately be on the agenda.

Kaliningrad is heavily militarized but geographically isolated, sitting on the Baltic Sea between NATO members Poland and Lithuania. Its location makes it strategically valuable to Russia, and potentially vulnerable in any direct confrontation with NATO.

Heather Williams, director of the Project on Nuclear Issues at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, joins DW to examine how seriously NATO should take Moscow’s latest warning, whether nuclear threats have become an effective tool of Russian deterrence, and how an unintended incident around Kaliningrad could escalate into a much larger confrontation.

Michael Lambert: Andy Burnham's Great Ideas but How Will He Pay for Them?

Oct 2, 2026 | Andy Burnham's speech to the Labour Conference promised a 10-year plan to fix Britain - but how will it be paid for?

In an excellent speech Andy Burnham set out tougher controls on water companies and renationalisation, if needed, more council houses, an end to rough sleeping, proper reform and investment in social care to save the NHS, further devolution, electoral reform - and a hint at a return to the EU.

Britain is broke. We have the highest energy prices in Europe, the highest rail fares, the lowest state pension, plus massive waste on Hinkley Point and HS2.

You only get money by growing businesses, building new ones and increasing economic activity - and there was nothing in the speech about how to do that.

AI Chatbots Remove Hijabs from Images of Muslim Women When Prompted

THE GUARDIAN: Guardian tested chatbots after French far-right politician stripped a Muslim woman of her hijab in a photo

When prompted, AI chatbots will edit images to remove the hijabs from Muslim women, a violation of one of the world’s most common and visible expressions of faith.

The Guardian asked ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini and Claude to take the veil off an AI-generated image of a woman wearing a hijab. Both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok bots complied with the prompt. Anthropic’s Claude responded that it does not have an image-editing or -generating feature but that it would not alter a photo to remove someone’s hijab.

Gemini initially said that it could not remove clothing or head coverings from photos of real people because it could not digitally alter someone’s appearance without their consent. But when asked to make the woman look more “western”, the bot created an image of her without her hijab. » | Johana Bhuiyan | Thursday, October 1, 2026

"He Will Come to Regret It" | Andrew Neil and Chris Curtis Clash over Burnham's EU Stance

Oct 1, 2026 | The PM says it's possible Labour's next manifesto could promise a new in-out referendum on the EU.

Is Britain ready to re-open the issue which ten years ago split the country down the middle?

Journalist Andrew Neil and Labour MP Chris Curtis debate the PM's stance.

Interview by Victoria Derbyshire, with Political Editor Nick Watt.

Andrew Neil is an old fossil now. He is long past his sell-by date. Moreover, it cracks me up that he doesn't want us to return to the EU, denying the British people all those rights as EU citizens. But Andrew Neil himself is well-heeled enough to be able to live the good life in France. Sounds like double standards to me. It also reminds me of the phrase, 'I'm alright, Jack' — © Mark Alexander

Democracy Now! Rise of the Far Right in Germany Raises Fear of an Even Wider Crackdown on Migration

Oct 1, 2026 | As we continue our coverage on the rise of right-wing political parties across Europe, we speak to Wiebke Judith from the German organization for asylum seekers' rights, PRO ASYL, about Germany's far-right party Alternative für Deutschland, or AfD, and its recent wins in September's state elections. Judith calls the historic wins — won by margins not seen in German elections since the Nazi era — "deeply concerning for everyone who cares about our democracy," and says that the growing influence of the AfD's anti-immigration stance over the German political landscape poses grave risks to refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and ethnic minorities in the country.

Pete Hegseth Announces Elon Musk to Steer US Military Strategy in Far-right Nationalist Speech

Oct 1, 2026 | Speaking at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a sweeping outline detailing the administration's vision for the future of the U.S. armed forces.

In a speech flanked by junior officers and non-commissioned officers, Hegseth laid out plans for a fundamental restructuring of the Department of Defense - a transition marked by significant ideological shifts, the dismantling of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and the confirmation of plans to eliminate 20% of America’s top military general officers and admirals.

At the center of this transformation is Project Meridian, a new 120-day government study commissioned to map out technological dominance across next-generation operational domains - including artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons, subterranean warfare, and lunar security.

If the US Military no longer wants weirdos, then sacking Hegseth would be a good place to start! Moreover, Hegseth should have added one more category to that list of undesirables: drunks!

By the way, I would advise him that he needs to get himself a new tailor. His suits are always way too small for him. Especially the sleeve length. Every time I see him, he looks as if he's wearing a suit his mother bought him to go to church on Sundays.

Further, somebody ought to whisper in Hegseth’s ear the bad news: the US has already probably lost the war against Iran. — © Mark Alexander

No 10 Gathering Evidence on Public Support for UK Rejoining EU

THE GUARDIAN: Senior Downing Street officials reach out to thinktanks and pollsters as they look to test backing for reversing Brexit

Senior Downing Street officials have been reaching out to thinktanks and pollsters as they look to test public support for the UK rejoining the EU.

Aides to Andy Burnham have been talking to EU experts in a range of organisations about how the public would view a promise to rejoin, as momentum builds behind including such a pledge in the next Labour manifesto.

Some in No 10 are keen to promise that Labour would at least negotiate over re-entry to the bloc, something Burnham has previously said he wants to see happen “in his lifetime”. Others are nervous, however, that making such a promise could revive the flagging political fortunes of Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader.

Burnham used his first Labour conference speech as leader to announce a review of the options for Britain’s relationship with Europe, and added on Wednesday that these options should include rejoining entirely.

The prime minister told delegates on Tuesday: “Brexit has done more harm than good. So I will take the opportunity around the [UK-EU] summit to lay out to you, to lay out to the country, what I believe are the different options for Britain’s long-term relationship with our European partners.” » | Kiran Stacey and Lisa O’Carroll | Wednesday, September 30, 2026

Michael Lambert: Why Luck Is More Important Than Anything Else If You Are to Succeed

Sep 30, 2026 | Is success really earned - or are we just lucky? In this video I start from Martin Lewis's remarkable speech to LSE graduates - talent, hard work and focus matter, but luck matters more.

I explore why two people can do everything right and get totally different outcomes.

We talk about the luck of where you're born, the family you’re born into, the talents you’re born with, meeting the right partner at the right time, being in the right place for a job - and above all, health. Health is the jackpot.

And I end with the bigger question: if success is only measured in money, why are so many rich and famous people unhappy, while so many poor people seem happy? Maybe the truly lucky ones are those who find happiness regardless.

Michael, this is one of your very finest videos. This is a message that so many people, young and old alike, should heed.

So often, one hears the old trope that “the harder one works, the richer one gets”. No, that is not true; it’s a lie! That is not to say that hard work doesn’t play its part in success, but it should be remembered that graveyards are replete with dead people who worked extremely hard in life and got nowhere.

I know from personal and painful experience just how much luck, and bad luck, play their parts in life. — © Mark Alexander

Why Did Germans Stop Using Fraktur?

The Nazis got rid of it! 👀

For centuries, German was often printed in Fraktur, a distinctive blackletter typeface

🌍 By the late 1800s, many scientists, businesses and publishers were already pushing for a switch to the more international Antiqua typeface

🏛️ The debate became so heated that it even reached the German parliament in 1911

🦅 After 1933, the Nazis embraced Fraktur as something uniquely German and used it extensively in propaganda

⚔️ Then came the problem: people across occupied Europe struggled to read it

📜 In 1941, Martin Bormann ordered that Fraktur be abandoned in favour of Antiqua

✡️ Rather than admit the practical reasons, the regime absurdly claimed that Fraktur was somehow of Jewish origin

🍺 Today, you’re most likely to spot it on old pub signs, traditional restaurant menus or historic buildings - stuff that wants to give you that old world feel, even if it’s not really that old…
