A stunned Washington faced searching questions about political violence and gun control on Sunday after shots were fired at a prestigious media gala attended by Donald Trump and senior White House officials.
A man targeted a Secret Service agent at a security checkpoint in the Washington Hilton hotel the previous night before being tackled and arrested. Trump and Melania Trump were rushed out of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner as guests dived for cover under tables.

Liz Truss Says Smoking Ban a Bid by ‘Technocratic Establishment’ to Limit Freedom
Even though I am no longer a smoker, and even though I have never been a fan of Liz Truss, I applaud her for having the courage to speak out, then and now, on this illiberal and profoundly undemocratic legislation.
Politicians are passing this legislation for several reasons, one of which is to save the NHS money. This is absurd for two very important reasons: the first being that smokers contribute far, far more in taxes to the Treasury than it costs the NHS to treat them for any illnesses that smoking may cause; the second being that the NHS was established to be of service to the people, not for the people to be of service to the NHS! To limit people’s freedom for the sake of the NHS is to take the cart before the horse!
Furthermore, if we want to save the NHS money, then we should all stop drinking alcohol, stop consuming sugar, stop partaking in dangerous sports, and even stop driving!
It was disgraceful of Rishi Sunak to propose this bill. I once read that he only proposed it because he wanted to protect his two daughters! How true that is, I do not know. What I do know is that he was very un-Conservative to propose it. Conservatives are supposed to believe in individual liberty. A true Conservative is supposed to be against government interference in one’s personal affairs.
What further appals me about this legislation is just how silent the legacy media is on the issue. Just about all of the newspapers are just lying down and playing dead!
Fact is, now they’re going after the smokers; soon, they’ll be going after the drinkers and the obese. Mark my words!

At a White House news conference a couple of hours later, Mr. Trump described an assailant carrying multiple weapons charging a security checkpoint before being taken into custody.
The president said a Secret Service officer had been shot but was saved by his bulletproof vest. Mr. Trump said the motive of the attacker — whom he said was believed to be a “lone wolf” — was not immediately clear.
Two law enforcement officials who were not authorized to discuss the matter identified the man in custody as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, Calif. Mr. Trump posted two images on Truth Social showing a man he said was the attacker being detained and told reporters that law enforcement officials were heading to the suspect’s apartment in California.
Mr. Trump also posted a brief surveillance video of a man running past the security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held. In the video, agents drew their guns and appeared to start firing.
Guests were about five minutes into the dinner hour when a commotion occurred toward the back of the ballroom, which Mr. Trump said had not been breached by the attacker. “I’ve told my people a little while ago, they were getting ready to leave, and I said, ‘Nope, you’re not making an 18-hour flight to go there. We have all the cards,’” Mr. Trump said in a statement. “They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18-hour flights to sit around talking about nothing.”
Steve Witkoff, the special envoy, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, had been scheduled to travel to Pakistan on Saturday, along with top aides to Vice President JD Vance. Officials in Pakistan have been mediating between the United States and Iran to try to end more than a month of war in the Middle East.
The cancellation of the trip is the latest sign that Iran and the United States are far from reaching a deal to end the war. A previous trip to Islamabad by Mr. Vance proved unsuccessful, and the Americans appear no closer to achieving the administration’s political goals, including convincing Iran to turn over its nuclear stockpile and curtail its future program. The two sides are also locked in a stalemate over control of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil supply flows.
Mr. Trump’s decision came after Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, who had been in Islamabad for talks with Pakistani officials, left the country and traveled to Oman. No direct meetings had been scheduled with U.S. officials.

Simplement vêtue de son peignoir, son pyjama et ses pantoufles, elle a été menottée puis conduite dans une cellule.
« Je ne comprenais pas vraiment ce qui m’arrivait (...) Et c’était très humiliant. Je n’avais même pas eu le temps de me coiffer. Je venais à peine de me lever », a-t-elle raconté dans les colonnes du New York Times ce samedi, quelques jours après sa libération le 16 avril. Pendant seize jours, Marie-Thérèse Ross-Mahé explique avoir vécu un enfer dans le système de détention de migrants des États-Unis.

Writing from his cell in the Rajai Shahr prison in the northern Iranian city of Karaj, Babak Alipour wanted to tell his friends about those who had already gone to their execution.
There was Behrouz Ehsani, 69, the elder statesman of the group, who was “never angry” about their predicament. Then there was Mehdi Hassani, a 48-year-old father of three who he saw a couple of times in the prison hospital and who would ask him to pass on to the children the message that he was “fine”.
Despite the killings, Alipour, a 34-year-old law graduate with a passion for mountaineering who had been on death row for three years, recorded in his neat, tight, handwriting that he was not intimidated.
On 12 March he made a short video on a phone smuggled into his jail. “Dictators have come, been overthrown, died, and been killed, and now it is the turn of Khamenei-the-son’s dictatorship,” Alipour said of the accession of Mojtaba Khamenei to supreme leader after the death of Ali Khamenei in airstrikes by the US and Israel. Writing from his cell in the Rajai Shahr prison in the northern Iranian city of Karaj, Babak Alipour wanted to tell his friends about those who had already gone to their execution.
There was Behrouz Ehsani, 69, the elder statesman of the group, who was “never angry” about their predicament. Then there was Mehdi Hassani, a 48-year-old father of three who he saw a couple of times in the prison hospital and who would ask him to pass on to the children the message that he was “fine”.
Despite the killings, Alipour, a 34-year-old law graduate with a passion for mountaineering who had been on death row for three years, recorded in his neat, tight, handwriting that he was not intimidated.
On 12 March he made a short video on a phone smuggled into his jail. “Dictators have come, been overthrown, died, and been killed, and now it is the turn of Khamenei-the-son’s dictatorship,” Alipour said of the accession of Mojtaba Khamenei to supreme leader after the death of Ali Khamenei in airstrikes by the US and Israel. Kushner and Witkoff to Talk With Iranian Officials in Pakistan

Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, two of the United States’ lead negotiators in peace talks with Iran, will travel to Pakistan on Saturday to hold discussions with Iranian officials, an administration spokeswoman said. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, also arrived in Islamabad, according to Iranian state media, and Iranian officials said he planned to meet with the two U.S. representatives.
“Steve and Jared will be heading to Pakistan tomorrow to hear the Iranians out,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said on Friday afternoon. “We hope progress will be made,” she said, adding that “the president, the vice president, the secretary of state will be waiting here in the United States for updates.”
The Iranian foreign minister plans to present a new written response to a U.S. proposal for a peace deal, according to two senior Iranian officials familiar with the trip who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic matters.
President Trump announced an extension of the cease-fire in the war on Iran earlier this week. While that halted an all-out bombardment of Iran and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Israel and Gulf countries, the war has morphed into a costly standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil and gas conduit. Both the United States and Iran are blocking the transit of ships through the waterway in an effort to gain leverage in any peace talks.
The news of the scheduled meeting in Pakistan came after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ships and ports would continue for “as long as it takes” to get Iran to agree to a deal. Iranian leaders have made lifting the blockade a condition of resuming peace talks with Washington.
Many sticking points remain between the two sides, chief among them the status of the strait and Iran’s nuclear program.
