Washington In Shock after White House Press Dinner Shooting: ‘An Angry, Polarized Nation’
THE GUARDIAN: Questions raised about political violence, security and gun control after brazen attack at event attended by top officials
A stunned Washington faced searching questions about political violence and gun control on Sunday after shots were fired at a prestigious media gala attended by Donald Trump and senior White House officials.
A man targeted a Secret Service agent at a security checkpoint in the Washington Hilton hotel the previous night before being tackled and arrested. Trump and Melania Trump were rushed out of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner as guests dived for cover under tables.
The chaotic events raised fresh questions about the security of top officials, many of whom were gathered in the hotel’s expansive ballroom. Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, told NBC’s Meet the Press programme: “It does appear that he did in fact, have set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the president.”
The brazen assault at the Hilton – the same hotel where then president Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981 – also occurred against a backdrop of surging political violence and an epidemic of gun violence in the US.
Trump himself has often been criticised as an accelerant of vitriolic and incendiary discourse. Over the past 10 years he has called on a crowd to “knock the crap out” of protesters, urged supporters to “fight like hell” following his 2020 election defeat and mused that crime could be ended in “one really violent day” if police were allowed to be “extraordinarily rough” without fear of retribution. » | David Smith in Washington | Sunday, April 26, 2026

Trump Is a Titanic, Vainglorious F*ck Up
Trump is no Franklin D Roosevelt, that’s for sure. Roosevelt introduced the New Deal to alleviate the ravages of the Great Depression for struggling Americans, but Trump is causing another great depression with his ludicrous, nonsensical economic policies which are causing further impoverishment of the already poor. And his great big giveaway—Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”(OBBBA)—was introduced and passed to help the already fabulously wealthy — America’s struggling and needy superrich. And now this reckless, unnecessary and cruel war which is costing north of ONE BILLION DOLLARS a day. Just imagine what a sensible and compassionate president could do with that wasted money to help America’s downtrodden, America’s poor, Americans without healthcare, and America’s homeless. Further, just imagine the multiplier effect of all that money swirling round the domestic economy instead of being used to blow up world heritage sites, to destroy Iran’s infrastructure, and most important of all, to kill and maim innocent men, women, and children in Iran. Not to mention killing American servicemen! And for what? — © Mark Alexander

The Predatory Hegemon (w/ Stephen Walt) | The Chris Hedges Report
Trump’s Asylum 'Re-screening' Aims to Detain Legal Migrants Indefinitely for Profit
Feb 24, 2026 | When Donald Trump returned to office, he pledged the largest immigration crackdown in U.S. history. While public debate centered on mass deportations, a quieter — and potentially more consequential — transformation has taken shape: the rapid expansion of immigrant detention capacity inside the United States.
New 2025 data shows that 77% of people newly placed into deportation proceedings had no criminal conviction. At the same time, ICE is consolidating more than 200 detention sites into 34 massive facilities — including proposed “mega-centers” capable of holding up to 10,000 people each. Planned sites span Georgia, Maryland, Texas, and Arizona, with total capacity projected to approach 100,000 beds.
A controversial Department of Homeland Security memo now directs mandatory “re-vetting” of refugees at the one-year mark, allowing detention during inspection with no defined time limit. Critics argue this creates the risk of prolonged — even indefinite — confinement for people lawfully admitted to the United States.
Federal judges have rebuked elements of the policy, citing constitutional concerns and unlawful detention practices.
Meanwhile, fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers and a wave of collapsed federal prosecutions have intensified scrutiny. Supporters call the overhaul modernization and a restoration of order. Opponents see the construction of a permanent detention infrastructure that could outlast any single administration.
