France Warns of War with Iran

BBC: A warning by France's foreign minister that the world should prepare for war over Iran's nuclear programme has drawn an angry response from Iran.

Iran's foreign ministry said the remark had damaged the credibility of France, while the official Iranian news agency accused Paris of aping Washington.

Britain to Sell ‘Friends’ 72 Eurofighters

BBC: Saudi Arabia is to buy 72 Eurofighter Typhoon jets BAE Systems, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

The deal is worth about £4.4bn - excluding charges for maintainance of the aircraft and training.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) dropped a probe last year into a sale of jets to the Saudis in the 1980s.

The UK government said this was on national security grounds, but reports said the Saudis had threatened to pull out if the probe went ahead.

Blackmail claim

The official Saudi news agency SPA says that the price paid per aircraft is the same that Britain's Royal Air Force pays for the aircraft.

UK-based BAE Systems said it welcomed "this important milestone in its strategy to continue to develop Saudi Arabia as a key home market with substantial employment and investment in future in-Kingdom industrial capability".

Critics attacked the decision to drop the SFO investigation, saying the government had put commercial interest before ethics and had given in to Saudi blackmail.

In addition to the price paid for the planes, there is also expected to be a lucrative deal for the munitions that go with them. Saudis buy Eurofighters from UK (more) »

US Prepares for War with Iran

THE TELEGRAPH: Senior American intelligence and defence officials believe that President George W Bush and his inner circle are taking steps to place America on the path to war with Iran, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt.

Pentagon planners have developed a list of up to 2,000 bombing targets in Iran, amid growing fears among serving officers that diplomatic efforts to slow Iran's nuclear weapons programme are doomed to fail.

Pentagon and CIA officers say they believe that the White House has begun a carefully calibrated programme of escalation that could lead to a military showdown with Iran.

Now it has emerged that Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution, is prepared to settle her differences with Vice-President Dick Cheney and sanction military action.

In a chilling scenario of how war might come, a senior intelligence officer warned that public denunciation of Iranian meddling in Iraq - arming and training militants - would lead to cross border raids on Iranian training camps and bomb factories.

A prime target would be the Fajr base run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force in southern Iran, where Western intelligence agencies say armour-piercing projectiles used against British and US troops are manufactured.

Under the theory - which is gaining credence in Washington security circles - US action would provoke a major Iranian response, perhaps in the form of moves to cut off Gulf oil supplies, providing a trigger for air strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities and even its armed forces. And Shariah for All?

TOWNHALL.COM: The story of the week wasn't Gen. David Petraeus' testimony on Iraq, although it dominated the headlines. The story of the week wasn't the sixth return of Sept. 11 since the jihad atrocity of 2001, although it inspired many public statements and ceremonies. The week's biggest story garnered little press and few comments. But, in a significant way, this overlooked story -- an outrageous display of police force in Brussels on Sept. 11, 2007 -- symbolizes the missing link in our flawed comprehension of both Iraq and Sept. 11.

There, in the so-called capital of Europe, 200 people marked the day with a protest against the Islamization of Europe -- a civilizational shift which, as Europe increasingly accommodates Shariah (Islamic law), is shockingly advanced. Indeed, Middle East expert Bernard Lewis has already predicted Europe will become Islamic by century's end. Absent a reversal of Islamization (which remains possible) I'm guessing sooner than that.

The assembly, sponsored by Stop the Islamization of Europe (SIOE), was wholly peaceful -- at least until Belgian police showed up. With a chopper above, water cannon nearby, they didn't break heads, exactly -- nothing so kind as that. In a photo that should be titled The New Face of Fascism (see it at www.brusselsjournal.com/node/2441), we see black-clad Belgian policemen brutalizing a man in a light-colored suit and tie. His hands are cuffed behind his back, his right elbow is clasped in what is known as an arm-bar hold, and he is also being subjected to a genital hold -- a vicious grip that, a retired cop friend of mine tells me, would get any American policeman thrown off the force.

The man under arrest was Frank Vanhecke, president of the Flemish secessionist party Vlaams Belang and a member of European Parliament. Also arrested and beaten was Filip Dewinter, who, as the leading politician of Vlaams Belang, Belgium's largest opposition party, has personally garnered 25 percent of the electorate. (You can find a picture of Belgian police forcing Dewinter to the ground online at kleinverzet.blogspot.com.)

These men are invariably described as "far-right" politicians, as though "far-right"-ness alone (whatever that means when totalitarian police tactics are considered tolerant left) is rationale enough for harsh treatment. I've met both men and know them as free-market, small-government conservatives who deeply believe Western civilization is worth defending against the Islamization that occurs with the entrenchment of Shariah. Indeed, they are bravely trying to prevent Europe's Islamization, practically by themselves. I say "bravely" because in Europe these days, as we know from the Islam-motivated murders of Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh, such beliefs can get you killed. And Shariah for All? Harsh, Uncomfortable Words for the White House from the Ol’ High Priest of Finance

TIMESONLINE: AMERICA’s elder statesman of finance, Alan Greenspan, has shaken the White House by declaring that the prime motive for the war in Iraq was oil.

In his long-awaited memoir, to be published tomorrow, Greenspan, a Republican whose 18-year tenure as head of the US Federal Reserve was widely admired, will also deliver a stinging critique of President George W Bush’s economic policies.

However, it is his view on the motive for the 2003 Iraq invasion that is likely to provoke the most controversy. “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil,” he says.

Greenspan, 81, is understood to believe that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the security of oil supplies in the Middle East.

Britain and America have always insisted the war had nothing to do with oil. Bush said the aim was to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction and end Saddam’s support for terrorism. [Source: Alan Greenspan claims Iraq war was really for oil (more) » By Graham Paterson]

Time to Get Out of the EU?

THE TELEGRAPH: A huge increase in economic migration into the EU is being proposed by the European Commission.

It wants to relax controls and open the borders to an extra 20 million workers from Asia and Africa over the next two decades.

That would more than double the present non-EU resident population now living in the 27 member states. It now stands at about 18 million out of a total of around 490 million.

The Commission is drawing up a new ''blue card'' scheme - modelled on the American ''green card'' work permit - allowing qualified migrants the right to live, work and travel in the EU.

'Immigrants are Good.' Good for What, Mr Frattini?

Have you got evidence that immigrants are good for anything, Mr Frattini? Or is this just one of your gut feelings?

It seems to me that uncontrolled immigration is good for just one thing: To overthrow the system - it’s good to lead us to tryranny. To Islamic tyranny! In other words, it’s a good way to Islamize Europe. It’s a good way to turn Europe into Eurabia!

BBC: European governments should regard immigration as an "enrichment" not a threat, EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini told a conference in Lisbon.

Mr Frattini said he would outline proposals next month for a "blue card" system for skilled immigrants, modelled on the US green card.

He said the US was getting 55% of all skilled migrants, and Europe only 5%.

"Skills shortages are already noticeable in a number of sectors and they will tend to increase," he said.

Mr Frattini has long argued that Europe needs policies to encourage legal migration, and to prevent illegal migration.

However, the European Commission's plans could be resisted by a number of European governments, which want to maintain national control over migration flows.

Heiliger Krieg übers Internet

FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG: 13. September 2007

When Native People Lose Control

BNP* NEWS TEAM: Brussels might be 200 miles from London but the two capital cities have a lot in common. Both have extreme left-wing mayors, both are home to a growing migrant population from the Third World, both are home to a growing number of Muslims who are displaying all the signs of successful colonists cowering the indigenous population into submission.

Just two days ago we reported the brutal actions of Brussels police who smashed up a birthday party by Filip deWinter Leader of the Flemish nationalists, Vlaams Belang, to coincide with the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks by Islamic extremists on America.

The brutality of the Brussels police against just 300 friends and supporters of Mr. deWinter was unprecedented, with three leading VB members clubbed and arrested. Eye witnesses reported a fleet of water cannons, a mounted cavalry unit and a further riot squad were held just yards away in reserve, just in case the real defenders of European democracy including Frank Vanhecke, an elected MEP, were minded to carry out acts of extreme violence.

Minority decision-makers

While the overwhelming majority of the uniformed police officers from the Brussels force are native Belgians the people that made the decision to ban an earlier protest to stop the Islamification of Europe were colonisers.

Every year the authorities in Brussels, the capital of Belgium and of the European Union (EU), receive between 500 and 600 applications for permission to demonstrate or hold protest marches. With very few exceptions permission is always granted. In the past five years only six applications were turned down – an average of one a year. Among these was one for a demonstration by the DHKP/C, a Kurdish terrorist organization. However in August Freddy Thielemans, the Mayor of Brussels, announced that he was banning a demonstration against the Islamization of Europe, planned to be held on September 11 in front of the European Parliament buildings.

Mayor Thielemans was worried that the demonstration will upset the large immigrant population of Brussels. Over half the inhabitants of the Brussels region are of foreign origin, many of them from Morocco. According to the mayor there is a real danger of violence between demonstrators and Muslims living in the neighbourhood. The latter might not tolerate native Europeans protesting against their continent becoming Eurabia.

Thielemans is a member of the Parti Socialiste (PS), a Belgian party which caters for the Muslim population. The PS is the largest party in Brussels, holding 17 of the 47 seats in the city council. 10 of the 17 PS-councillors are Muslims. The PS governs Brussels in a coalition with the Christian-Democrats, who have 11 councillors, of whom 2 are Muslims and 3 are immigrants from Sub-Saharan Africa. Only 13 of the 28 councillors in the governing coalition of the city are native Belgians. Thielemans is the most conspicuous of these. He is an atheist who is fond of Muslims, not because he respects religious people, but because he hates Christians.

Christianaphobe

On 2 April 2005 the Brussels mayor was attending an official cocktail party with the mayor of Angoulême (France), when the news of the death of Pope John Paul II reached him. On hearing the news he ordered “Champagne for everyone!” His French colleague walked out in disgust. Upsetting Catholics has never particularly worried the Socialist mayor of Brussels, for instance when he refused to ban a play (by a Moroccan-born author) which was advertised around the country on posters portraying the Virgin Mary with bare breasts.

In Mr. Thielemans’s absence his deputy, Algerian-born Faouzia Hariche, is Brussels’ acting mayor – which is an improvement. Hariche, too, obviously, is Muslim-friendly, but she has never publicly toasted the death of the Pope.

Last Spring, the Danish group Stop Islamiseringen af Danmark (SIAD), the British group Stop the Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) and the German group Pax Europa, decided to organize a protest march against the introduction of Sharia laws in Europe. The organizers want the march to take place on 9/11 in the streets of Brussels and to end in front of the EU Parliament.

The Brussels ban is a clear example of what happens when the native people lose control, political control of their own towns and cities. What can happen in Brussels today can happen in London, Cardiff or Glasgow tomorrow when the native people become a minority and the decisions are made by a minority with their own vested interests totally at odds with the wishes and aspirations and established traditions of the native people. Another New Low for the Dollar Against the Euro

BBC: The US dollar has fallen to new record lows against the euro as investors fret about a world credit crunch.

In European trading, the greenback dropped as low as $1.3927 against the euro, deepening Wednesday's losses.

The dollar has fallen in the past week, amid hopes that Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in a bid to reassure markets over current credit fears.

Analysts expect rates to fall by between a quarter and half a percentage point when the Fed meets next week.

Why Don’t Liberal, PC, Do-Gooders Mind Their Own Damn Business? The Swiss Are Entitled to Run Their Wonderful Country as They Wish. Basta!

BBC: An official report into the process of naturalisation in Switzerland says the current system is discriminatory and in many respects racist.

The report, from Switzerland's Federal Commission on Racial Discrimination, recommends far-reaching changes.
It criticises the practice of allowing members of a community to vote on an individual's citizenship application.

Muslims and people from the Balkans and Africa are the most likely to be rejected, the report points out.

Switzerland has Europe's toughest naturalisation laws. Foreigners must live for 12 years in a Swiss community before they can apply, and being born in Switzerland brings no right to citizenship.

Under the current system, foreigners apply through their local town or village.

They appear before a citizenship committee and answer questions about their desire to be Swiss. After that, they must often be approved by the entire voting community, in a secret ballot, or a show of hands. This practice, the report says, is particularly likely to be distorted by racial discrimination.

It cites the case of a disabled man originally from Kosovo. Although fulfilling all the legal criteria, his application for citizenship was rejected by his community on the grounds that his disability made him a burden on taxpayers, and that he was Muslim.

The report recommends that decisions on citizenship should be decided by an elected executive and not by the community as a whole. But such a move is likely to encounter stiff opposition.

Foreigners are a key issue in the run-up to Switzerland's general election next month.

The right-wing Swiss People's Party, currently leading in the opinion polls, claims Swiss communities have a democratic right to decide who can or cannot be Swiss. [Source: Swiss citizenship system 'racist' (more) By Imogen Foulkes]

We Are Not Winning the War on Islamic Terrorism!

The reason we are failing in our attempts to deal with the threat of Al-Qa’eda and Islamic terrorism is simple: We are trying to eliminate the threat by treating the symptoms, not the disease. A cancer cannot be treated in this way. A cancer has to be excised if a doctor is to effect a satisfactory cure. If the cancer is not excised, then that cancer will simply metastasize. This is precisely what is happening with Islamic terrorism: It is metastasizing! And go on metastasizing it will until our leaders have the courage and insight to identify the problem. In order to win a war, you have to know your enemy. It is imperative; otherwise the war will be lost.

In this particular instance, there is much at stake. In short, our civilization is at stake!

It is high time for the US and its allies to change tactics. Time is not on our side.
THE TELEGRAPH: The al-Qa'eda terror organisation of Osama bin Laden is as strong today as it was six years ago during the September 11 attacks and retains the capability to carry out similar atrocities, according to a report by one of Britain's leading think tanks.

"Core" al-Qa'eda is proving adaptable and resilient and has retained the ability to plan and co-ordinate large-scale attacks in the Western world, says the Strategic Survey published yesterday by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
Nigel Inkster, a former director for operations and intelligence for MI6, who contributed to the al-Qa'eda section of the report, said it showed that the tactics being used in the war on terrorism were proving ineffective.

"The bottom line is that for six years the United States and its allies have been struggling to eliminate this threat and it is becoming increasingly clear that they have not succeeded in doing so," said Mr Inkster. Al-Qa'eda 'as strong today as it was on 9/11' (more) By Con Coughlin

Beauty and the Beast

It is quite unbelievable that Muslims have the temerity to come here to the West, to the very people that have been kind enough to offer them a way out of their Third World misery, and then try and tell us how we should lead our lives. They even have the chutzpah to suggest that we are in a state of pre-Islamic chaos, or Jahiliyya!

Now please, ladies and gentlemen, take a good look at the following images, and please ask yourself an earnest question: Who are the people living in a backward state?

I think the answer is plain to see. Frankly, I believe that Muslims can teach us very little. They can certainly teach us nothing about either fashion or style! - ©Mark

Was 9/11 the Death-Knell of Our Civilization?

CREATORS.COM: How long does it take a nation to forget a wound to its heart?

Six years ago, Islamic terrorists murdered 3000 Americans. The country watched in horror as men and women flung themselves from the top stories of the World Trade Center, desperately attempting to escape the flames rising beneath them; as firefighters were crushed beneath the falling towers; as Americans were consumed by a ball of fire springing from Flight 77 at the Pentagon; as Flight 93 plummeted to consecrated earth in Pennsylvania.

If we took one day to mourn each of the lives taken on September 11, our mourning period would last more than eight years. It has been just six years, and America is already in grave danger of wiping clean the slate of memory.

Did our acute need for closure overcome our more honorable instinct for justice? Were we so horrified by the images of September 11 that we deliberately blinded ourselves to the continuing presence of evil in our world, preferring to retreat to the pre-September 11 rut?

Or has a far more insidious tendency taken root in our politics?

September 11, common parlance has it, changed everything. "Tonight we are a country awakened to danger and called to defend freedom," President Bush told Americans on September 20, 2001. "Our grief has turned to anger, and anger to resolution. … Freedom and fear are at war."

And for the first few years, Americans agreed with President Bush: Islamism was a global problem, not a simple law enforcement issue. Islamic tyranny, combined with a willingness to harbor and finance international terrorist groups, could not be tolerated. We would not wait for another 9/11 — we would act firmly, decisively and pre-emptively. The Battle Over The 9/11 Legacy Is The Battle Of Our Time (more) By Ben Shapiro

TIMESONLINE: A group of young Muslim apostates launches a campaign today, the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America, to make it easier to renounce Islam.

The provocative move reflects a growing rift between traditionalists and a younger generation raised on a diet of Dutch tolerance.

The Committee for Ex-Muslims promises to campaign for freedom of religion but has already upset the Islamic and political Establishments for stirring tensions among the million-strong Muslim community in the Netherlands.

Ehsan Jami, the committee’s founder, who rejected Islam after the attack on the twin towers in 2001, has become the most talked-about public figure in the Netherlands. He has been forced into hiding after a series of death threats and a recent attack.

The threats are taken seriously after the murder in 2002 of Pim Fortuyn, an antiimmigration politician, and in 2004 of Theo Van Gogh, an antiIslam film-maker.

Speaking to The Times at a secret location before the committee’s launch today, the Labour Party councillor said that the movement would declare war on radical Islam. Similar organisations campaigning for reform of the religion have sprung up across Europe and representatives from Britain and Germany will join the launch in The Hague today.

“Sharia schools say that they will kill the ones who leave Islam. In the West people get threatened, thrown out of their family, beaten up,” Mr Jami said. “In Islam you are born Muslim. Brussels Protest: “Islamisation of Europe”

BBC: Police in the Belgian capital, Brussels, have arrested two far-right political leaders at a protest against the "Islamisation of Europe".

Police clashed with some of the 200 demonstrators and dozens more people were reported to have been arrested.

The mayor of Brussels had banned the protest, held on the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the US.

Frank Vanhecke and Filip Dewinter of the Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) party were arrested.

Vlaams Belang has been critical of Muslim immigration to Belgium.

The mayor of Brussels, Freddy Thielemans, banned the protest last month for fear it would cause problems with the city's immigrant population.

The protest organisers had promised a large turn-out, but the approximately 200 protesters were nearly outnumbered by police and reporters. [Source: Arrests at Brussels Islam protest]

And Our Weak Politicians Put Up with This Crap!

A leading advocate of Tablighi Jamaat, Ebrahim Rangooni, has said that the movement seeks to “rescue the ummah [the global Muslim community] from the culture and civilisation of the Jews, the Christians and [other] enemies of Islam”. Its aim, he wrote, is to “create such hatred for their ways as human beings have for urine and excreta”.

Mr Rangooni has also given warning to parents that non-Muslim schools “turn humans into animals” and that sending a Muslim child to a British college “is as dangerous as throwing them into hell with your own hands”.

THE TIMES: A Muslim group that wants to open a giant £100 million mosque in London has set its sights on “winning the whole of Britain to Islam”.

Tablighi Jamaat aims to build an Islamic complex near to the site of the 2012 Olympic stadium, with a mosque for 12,000 people, by far the largest religious building in Britain.

The organisation, which has millions of followers worldwide, insists that it is a peaceful, apolitical revivalist movement that promotes Islamic consciousness among individual Muslims. However, intelligence agencies have cautioned that the group’s ability to fire young men with a zeal for Islam acts as a staging post, for some, along a path that leads to jihadist terrorism.

Kafeel Ahmed, the Indian doctor who died from burns last month after trying to set off a car bomb at Glasgow Airport, is the latest in a line of terrorists for whose initial radicalisation Tablighi Jamaat has been blamed. The group (literally, the preaching party) belongs to the ultra-conservative Deobandi school of thought within Sunni Islam, whose adherents run more than 600 of Britain’s 1,350 mosques.

In recent days The Times has exposed the virulently anti-Western creed of some British Deobandis who preach that non-Muslims are an evil and corrupting influence. Their defensive, isolationist approach to life in Britain is shared by many British supporters of Tablighi Jamaat. 9/11 Six Years On: Time to “Fess Up”

FAMILY SECURITY MATTERS: Six years after 9/11, the evidence is mounting that we will lose the war on terror unless we change our policies radically and soon.

Sun Tzu teaches that to win a war, one must know who the enemy is. Paradoxical as it may sound in late 2007, there is no sound reason to believe that the Bush Administration knows who the enemy is, let alone how to go about defeating it.

Officially, we’re fighting a war against terror, but terrorism is a tactic, not an enemy, and one does not win wars by fighting tactics. Yet the enemy is very real and formidable. Armed with a murderous ideology, it has a worldwide support and recruitment infrastructure, virtually unlimited financing, and single-minded commitment to the destruction of our civilization. Whether we call it Islamism, radical Islam or Islamofascism, it is an aggressive and violent millenarian movement no less reactionary and dangerous than its totalitarian predecessors Nazism and Communism. While this reality is occasionally admitted, not once has Washington “fessed up” to the fact that the threat we are currently facing would have never reached the critical levels it has without nearly thirty years of massive ideological, financial and operational sponsorship by the three pillars of Islamic extremism – Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran.

Saudi Arabia, by spending untold billions for the export of its hateful Wahhabi creed and building the infrastructures of Islamism worldwide; Pakistan, by serving as the world’s largest breeding grounds of Islamic terrorists with the full knowledge of its military and intelligence services; Iran, by openly and aggressively supporting terrorism everywhere even as it seeks to become a nuclear power.

This disastrous state of affairs that the Bush Administration stubbornly refuses to acknowledge was again demonstrated last week in the failed German terrorist plot against U.S. military facilities. According to German government sources, the conspirators were radicalized to the point of planning mass murder in the Wahhabi-controlled “Multicultural House” and the Islamic Information Center in Ulm, and received terrorist training in Pakistan in 2006 – five years after Pakistan, alongside Saudi Arabia, became our “strategic allies” in the war against terror.

The results of Washington’s egregious strategic myopia are clear for everyone to see. We have allowed Iran, which is now directly involved in killing our soldiers, and Saudi Arabia, which provides 50% of the suicide bombers in Iraq, to systematically undermine our efforts there with impunity, making it highly unlikely that the current successes in the surge campaign will last. In Afghanistan, the Taliban has received a new lease on life thanks to unimpeded access and supplies from across the border in the Northwest Frontier Province, which has itself become Talibanized on Musharaf’s watch, and countless Jihadi training camps are again open for business as in the good old pre-9/11 days. Throw in the huge strides the Islamists have made in places like Turkey, Nigeria, Thailand and in the rapidly growing Muslim communities in Europe and the United States, and there is little reason to be sanguine about the Bush Administration’s legacy on national security.

If there is a bright side to this somber picture, it would be the realization that if our president for the past seven years had been named Gore or Kerry we would have very likely already implemented the preemptive surrender option their democratic colleagues in Congress are clamoring for. It is a very small consolation.

BBC: The German television network NDR has sacked a prominent talk show host after she praised the family model promoted by the Nazis.

NDR said Eva Herman, 48, was fired after confirming quotes printed by the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

She said "values like the family, children and motherhood, which were promoted in the Third Reich too, were later scrapped by the 68ers".

She was referring to the radicalism that swept the West in the 1960s.

She made the remarks at the launch of her latest book on Friday, called The Noah's Ark Principle - Why we must save the Family.

NDR's programme director, Volker Herres, issued a statement saying that "Herman's authorial activities are, in our view, no longer compatible with her role as a television moderator and talk show host".

Herman had previously appeared as a newsreader on the Tagesschau bulletin, but stood down last year before the publication of The Eve Principle to protect the neutrality of the programme. [Source: ’Nazi’ row sinks German TV star]

Robert Spencer on OBL’s Challenge to Americans to Embrace Islam

FRONTPAGEMAG.COM: "I invite you to embrace Islam,” says Osama bin Laden in his latest videotape. Most analysts take this as pious window-dressing and focus on what they believe to be the more substantive points of his message: his comments on the war in Iraq, his critique of capitalism, the similarity of much of what he says to Democratic Party talking points, and the like. But in fact the invitation to Islam is the heart, and the most revealing aspect, of bin Laden’s entire statement.

The chief reason for this, of course, is because in traditional Islamic law, the invitation to Islam must precede an attack on non-Muslims. The Islamic prophet Muhammad makes this clear, directing Muslims to issue this invitation first, and if the unbelievers refuse, to invite them to enter the Islamic social order as second-class dhimmis, and if they refuse both, to go to war with them:

Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, do not embezzle the spoils; do not break your pledge; and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children. When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them....If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya [the poll tax on non-Muslims]. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them. (Sahih Muslim 4294)

Is, then, a major attack imminent? There are numerous indications of that – suggesting that one of the primary audiences, at least for this part of Osama’s message, is the Islamic world. If such an attack comes, Osama has by means of this videotape attempted to forestall criticism by Muslims, and has laid claim to Islamic legitimacy for Al-Qaeda’s actions.

But there is also a still wider significance to Osama’s invitation to Islam. He offers in this videotape a cultural critique of the Judeo-Christian West. This critique doesn’t focus on the exportation of its immoral pop culture, which some think is the primary, if not sole, grievance of the Islamic world against the West; Osama doesn’t mention that at all here. Rather, he concentrates on its religion: “You believe with absolute certainty that you believe in Allah, and you are full of conviction of this belief, so much that you have written this belief of yours on your dollar. But the truth is that you are mistaken in this belief of yours.” Osama’s Challenge By Robert Spencer

The Lamentable State of Childhood

”Further research has shown that while we are wealthier than 50 years ago, our young people are experiencing increasing levels of anxiety and mental health problems, where one in 10 teenagers has a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder.” – Bob Reitemeier

It should be noted that fifty years ago, most mothers did not work; they generally stayed home to raise their children instead. Perhaps we can learn a lesson from that.

THE TELEGRAPH: A generation of children are being "contaminated" by a cocktail of addictive computer games, test-driven schooling, increased traffic and an irrational fear of strangers which leaves them unable to play outside, according to a lobby of more than 270 experts.

In a letter to the The Daily Telegraph, the group of academics, authors and charity leaders say modern life has eroded children's ability to leave their homes unsupervised, seriously undermining their long-term development. Modern life ‘is destroying children’s play’ (more)
Letter signed by 270 experts: ‘Let our children play’

Sir – Since last September, when a group of professionals, academics and writers wrote to The Daily Telegraph expressing concern about the marked deterioration in children’s mental health, research evidence supporting this case has continued to mount.

Compelling examples have included Unicef’s alarming finding that Britain’s children are amongst the unhappiest in the developed world, and the children’s charity NCH’s report of an explosion in children’s clinically diagnosable mental health problems.

We believe that a key factor in this disturbing trend is the marked decline over the last 15 years in children’s play. Play – particularly outdoor, unstructured, loosely supervised play – appears to be vital to children’s all-round health and well-being.

It develops their physical coordination and control; provides opportunities for the first-hand experiences that underpin their understanding of and engagement with the world; facilitates social development (making and keeping friends, dealing with problems, working collaboratively); and cultivates creativity, imagination and emotional resilience. This includes the growth of self-reliance, independence and personal strategies for dealing with and integrating challenging or traumatic experiences.

Many features of modern life seem to have eroded children’s play. They include: increases in traffic that make even residential areas unsafe for children; the ready availability of sedentary, sometimes addictive screen-based entertainment; the aggressive marketing of over-elaborate, commercialised toys (which seem to inhibit rather than stimulate creative play); parental anxiety about "stranger danger", meaning that children are increasingly kept indoors; a test-driven school and pre-school curriculum in which formal learning has substantially taken the place of free, unstructured play; and a more pervasive cultural anxiety which, when uncontained by the policy-making process, routinely contaminates the space needed for authentic play to flourish.

A year on, the signatories of the original letter to the Telegraph are joined by other concerned colleagues in calling for a wide-ranging and informed public dialogue about the intrinsic nature and value of play in children’s healthy development, and how we might ensure its place at the heart of twenty-first-century childhood. Does a People Make a Language, or Does a Language Make a People?

Many years ago, when I was learning German, one thing struck me more than anything else about the language I was then trying to learn. It was this: How precise one has to be when speaking the language. In German, you can’t get away with saying ‘who’ when you mean ‘whom’. It just won’t do. They mean two different things, and you’ve got to get your head around the difference.

Similarly, there are so many words for ‘the’ in German. It can be ‘der’, ‘die’, or ‘das’. It all depends on the gender of the noun. But to complicate matters still further, what is a ‘der’ in one case (nominative masculine singular) can turn into a ‘den’ in another (accusative masculine singular), a ‘dem’ in another case (dative masculine singular) and a ‘des’ in yet another case (genitive masculine singular), and so on. I’ll spare you the grief of the plural forms!

Then you have a similar problem when it comes to ‘a’ in German. That, too, depends on the case in point. It can at various times be ‘ein’, ‘einer’, ‘einen’, ‘einem’, ‘eines’, and so on. Add to all this the fact that adjectives have to be declined, and the fact that there are three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. Believe me, it can be mind-boggling to the uninitiated.

But then, if you are like I am, you eventually get your ‘Eureka moment’, and from that moment on, it all becomes very clear, crystal clear in fact, and from that moment on too, it all starts to make perfect sense.

Where is this all leading, you may be asking yourself? Well, to cut the whole thing short, it leads to the following. The Germans are a pretty clever people. Hardly anyone can touch them when it comes to engineering. Who can manufacture a fine car like the Germans? Think of the elegance of a Mercedes or a Porsche. And then add to that elegance the downright precision of the car's construction, to say nothing of the performance of its engine. Such beautiful cars embody perfection and precision.

I therefore have to ask myself why the Germans are such fine engineers. One cannot help but think that there’s a link there between the precision of the language and the precision of the engineering.

English is not anywhere near as precise as German. It doesn’t really matter too much if you use ‘who’ when you should be using ‘whom’. Indeed, many an English-speaker goes through life without ever learning the difference! But he still gets by. And as for cases, I don’t think that the average English-speaker would recognise a case if one smacked him in the teeth!

But then, who in the English-speaking world can manufacture a sports car like the Germans? Who could make a car like the Mercedes Roadster, or a Porsche Boxster? Could it be that a people who have to be so precise when speaking are more likely to become precision engineers? In short, does precision in language lead to precision in engineering? And do those precision engineers become so because their language is so precise; or is the reverse true? In other words, do precise people develop a precise way of speaking, or does a precise way of speaking make a precise people?

It’s a very interesting question, and it is a question I have long pondered. The question, of course, is an easy one to pose; it is rather more difficult to answer that self-same question, however.

Which leads me to Arabic…

Now one thing has to be said. Arabic is a fine and elegant language. Calligraphically, it is art indeed. In fact, so beautiful is it when written that the Arabs have used calligraphy as art all over the centuries, especially since Muhammad, the prophet of most Arabs, forbade the depiction of the human form. So, instead of the statue of David (Michelangelo), you get the profession of faith, al-shahada (pronounced ash-shahada), ashadw an la illah ila allah, wa ashadw an Muhammadan rasul ullah (only demonstrating!), written, of course, in beautiful Arabic calligraphy. A Westerner prefers and appreciates the statue of David; an Arab, of course, the profession of faith.

So there is no doubt about the fact that Arabic can be a very elegant language, especially in its written form. Indeed, it can be as elegant as some Arabs can be in their snow-white dishdashas, or thobes. But although Arabic has influenced many other languages, especially due to the Arabs’ conquests in pursuit of their expansion of Islam, or Dar ul Islam. For example, there are said to be an estimated four thousand Arabic loanwords in Spanish alone; and Arabic has lent many words to other languages, too, since Arabic was a ”major vehicle of culture” in the Middle Ages.

One feature of Arabic, however, is very fascinating to me: It is written backwards.

Now this brings me right back to where I started. The Germans are precision engineers, maybe as a result of having such precision in the German language. Arabic is the language of a people whose one main characteristic is looking backwards. Indeed, it is the aim of Muslims to take us all back to a bygone age – back 1400 years to the time of their prophet.

So my next question is this: Can a people whose language is written backwards move forwards? That means to say: Is it necessary for a people to write facing the future to be progressive, or can a people be progressive in spite of the fact that their language is written in the direction of the past? Moreover, have the Arabs made the language, or has the language made the Arabs?
