Indonesia Proposes Alcohol Ban in Bali
The proposed bill to outlaw the production, sale and consumption of alcohol across the whole of Indonesia carries a prison sentence of up to ten years for violators. If passed, it would crush the tourism sector, industry chiefs have warned.
“No matter how beautiful the country is, if they can’t find alcohol, they [tourists] won’t want to come here,” said Hariyadi Sukamdani, the head of Indonesia's Hotel and Restaurant Association.
A ban would particularly damage the resort of Bali, one of Indonesia’s 34 provinces. » | Nicola Smith | Sunday, September 11, 2016

Muslim Scholar: No Separation of Church and State in Islam
Writing in Friday’s LA Times, Shadi Hamid, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and the author of Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle Over Islam is Reshaping the World, states that Western suppositions that all religions are basically the same and want the same things is fundamentally wrong.
These differences, Hamid contends, run all the way from views of the sacred text (Muslims believe that every single word of the Qur’an comes directly from Allah) to an understanding of the nature of the state and its relationship to religion.
Hamid declares that the difference between Christianity and Islam regarding the state stem from the differences in each faith’s central figure. Whereas Jesus preached giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s, Muhammad united faith and the state in his own person.
“Unlike Jesus,” Hamid states, “Muhammad was both prophet and politician. And more than just any politician, he was a state-builder as well as a head of state. Not only were the religious and political functions intertwined in the person of Muhammad, they were meant to be intertwined.”
“To argue for the separation of religion from politics, then, is to argue against the model of the very man Muslims most admire and seek to emulate,” Hamid argues. » | Thomas D. Williams PhD | Saturday, September 10, 2016

The Veil Erases the Woman and Her Mind
In a TV interview, Jordanian author Zulaikha Aburisha said that there is no consensus about the woman's hijab among jurisprudents and that the niqab "effaces the woman and her mind."
Speaking on the A1 Jordan TV channel on March 10, she said that "the writing off of women, their effacement, the insistence upon covering women with veils, and the focus on the details of their body... are all manifestations of the sexual inhibitions experienced by our Arab societies."

Muslims Urged Not to Slaughter Animals in the Streets of France at Eid
The animal rights activist has urged the French government to intervene to prevent "barbarism" and work towards "appeasement" asking instead that followers of Islam make sacrifices by giving to the poor.
In France the government has been providing skips because many followers discard their carcasses to rot in the streets after they have killed them.
While it is illegal to slaughter an animal publicly it is allowed for Muslims to go to a slaughterhouse and carry out the act for religious reasons.
However, those breaking the law and killing animals outside of mandated areas became such a problem environmental health departments had to step in to provide bins because sheep carcasses were causing a public health problem. » | Siobhan McFadyen | Saturday, September 10, 2016

British Police Force Says It May Allow Female Officers to Wear Burkas As Part Of Uniform
West Midlands Police said they have “no barriers” relating to the burka - which covers the face as well as the body - as they announced that they would discuss allowing the traditional Islamic dress to become part of a policewoman’s uniform.
Chief Constable David Thompson said he would look into employing officers who wear the burka if the issue arose, as the force tries to increase the percentage of black and minority ethnic (BME) officers in the region to 30 per cent. It is believed that West Midlands Police are the first force to consider allowing the burka. » | Sam Dean | Friday, September 9, 2016

French PM Blasts NY Times for ‘False’ Picture of Life for Muslims in France
The US newspaper published the article on Friday after appealing for Muslim women living in Europe to send in their views on the recent burkini bans in a number of French coastal towns.
“What emerged was a portrait of life as a Muslim woman, veiled or not, in parts of Europe where terrorism has put people on edge. One French term was used dozens of times: ‘un combat,’ (a struggle) to live day to day,” the article, by journalist Lillie Dremeaux, said. » | Sam Ball | Tuesday, September 6, 2016

Top Academic: Muslims Would Not Tolerate Multiculturalism in Islamic Countries
The Iranian-born professor of law argues that while Muslim migrants are quick to claim their customs under “multiculturalism”, they have no intention of reciprocating.
Writing in Elsevier magazine, Dr. Ellian says Muslims rapidly learn the rules of multiculturalism and push for their place in society but have no intention of adopting any sort of progressive ideals.
“The Islamic world is not multicultural. New migrants in Europe rapidly learn the rules of multiculturalism — claim your place in society! Minorities do not take the progressive ideals, but the despotism of their country of origin as a starting point”, he stated in the Dutch weekly. » | Virginia Hale | Friday, September 2, 2016
