‘Politicians Have Always Been Schemers’: Upheld Conviction Fails to Dent Le Pen’s Popularity
THE GUARDIAN: Presidential bid by leader of far-right National Rally has no shortage of supporters in scenic Montargis

In the small French town of Montargis, Jean-Antoine, a retired decorator, was pleased Marine Le Pen had again shaken up French politics by launching a bid for the presidency, despite her legal woes.
“Even the judges said she didn’t personally profit from the money, it was for her party,” he said of Le Pen’s newly upheld conviction for embezzlement. “All politicians in France have always been schemers, it’s just a fact of life.”
Jean-Antoine, 76, who once painted luxury fashion stores, felt voters for the figurehead of France’s far-right, anti-immigration party National Rally (RN) wouldn’t care about this week’s appeal court decision over Le Pen’s misuse of European parliament funds.
Jean-Antoine’s late father fled to France from Spain during its civil war in the 1930s and became part of the French resistance standing up to occupation by Hitler’s Germany. “But now immigration has to stop,” he said.
Le Pen’s conviction last year had meant she was barred from running for office until the 2030s, but that restriction was shortened by appeal judges this week. This allowed her to declare a phoenix-like return to the presidential race, which will be voted on next year. » | Angelique Chrisafis in Montargis | Saturday, July 11, 2026

Wildfires in Andalucía
MARK ALEXANDER: Naturally, I am very distressed by ALL the wildfires in Europe at this time. But in the last couple of days, I have been particularly concerned about, and distressed by, the wildfires in southern Spain, in Andalucía, in and around Granada and Almería. I get several very loyal visitors from this area of Spain, and I have done for a very long time, so I am particularly concerned about their welfare at this extremely dangerous time.
I don’t know these people—I wish I did—, but to care about them and their welfare, I don’t have to.
I keep looking on the map to see if they have visited me, and when I see that they have at this extremely dangerous time for them, I am greatly relieved. Then, I know that at least they are still alive!

The Trillionaire Is Here: What Happens Next?
Jul 11, 2026 | Elon Musk has become the world’s first trillionaire following SpaceX’s record-breaking IPO, creating a fortune unlike anything seen in modern history.
Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman and Yale economist Natasha Sarin argue the milestone is about far more than one entrepreneur’s wealth—it reflects how today’s economy rewards ownership of rapidly-appreciating assets, and exposes the limits of a tax system designed more than a century ago.
Bloomberg wealth reporter Ben Steverman notes that while America has seen fortunes of comparable economic influence before, the concentration of wealth in today’s technology sector has reignited debates over taxation, political influence, inequality, and whether capitalism can continue rewarding innovation without widening the gap between the very richest Americans and everyone else.

Americans Are NOT Wealthy: The Truth about the US Economy
Juyl 11, 2026 | Many western economists and media outlets claim that Americans are wealthier than Europeans, but this is not true; it's based on a misunderstanding of the difference between average wealth and median wealth.
Ben Norton explains how the extreme inequality in the US make its average wealth misleadingly look high, and why GDP per capita is not a good measurement. He debunks the myth of "Europoors", which is often spread by Donald Trump supporters.

Putin Will Never Make Peace in Ukraine. Bill Browder Explains Why | World of Trouble
Jul 11, 2026 | Vladimir Putin’s growing unpopularity in Russia means he cannot afford to end the war with Ukraine as he will be lynched by his own people, the president’s greatest personal enemy in the West has warned.
Sir Bill Browder told the Independent’s World of Trouble podcast: “If he does a peace deal, he’ll lose power. If he loses power, then he’ll get strung up from a lamppost.”
The anti-corruption campaigner, who once ran the biggest investment fund in Russia, has fought against Putin for nearly two decades. His latest intervention comes days after NATO leaders met in Turkey and agreed to allow Kyiv to produce its own Patriot air defence missiles, vital in withstanding the onslaught from Moscow.
Putin has variously claimed that he ordered the invasion of Ukraine in 2014 to see off a potential threat of NATO membership for Kyiv, to save Russian speaking peoples in the east of the country, or as part of a patriotic duty to return Ukraine to Russia’s empire.

Rob Groves: Farage's Runaway Gravy Train Derails
July 11, 2026 | Nigel Farage built his entire brand on being the one honest man taking on a corrupt establishment.
This week, the facts underneath Reform UK's accounts tell a very different story: an undisclosed £5m gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, a convicted fraudster acting as the party's unofficial treasurer, money routed through a renamed company and an Australian currency exchange nobody can trace, deputy leader Richard Tice's murky Dubai property deal, and Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick under active Metropolitan Police investigation over an allegedly illegal foreign donation.
Meanwhile Farage has triggered a pointless by-election in Clacton, running unopposed against novelty candidate Count Binface, in a transparent bid to dodge the scrutiny closing in from the parliamentary standards commissioner, the Met, the National Crime Agency and his own furious donors.

‘I Had an Incredible Escape’: British Woman Tells of Close Encounter with Spanish Wildfire
THE GUARDIAN: Jeanne Henny, 74, put her friend, a wheelchair and two dogs into the car and drove away, only to meet fire surging on to the road

The speed, scale and ferocity of the wildfire in and around the Bédar municipality of Almería took everyone by surprise.
Jeanne Henny, an English woman who has had a house in the tiny hamlet of Los Pinos for 33 years, initially took Thursday afternoon’s yellow skies as proof that a calima wind from the Sahara was showering desert dust on the area. Then she noticed the smoke and saw from a fire-alert app that a blaze had broken out.
“There was a lot of smoke, but it was far away,” said Henny, 74. “We get fires and there’s some kind of scare most years. The police will come to each house and tell us to get out and there will be sirens going. But this time it didn’t happen like that.”
The gravity of the situation became apparent when a neighbour knocked on her door at 5.30pm and told her it was time that she and her friend, who uses a wheelchair, abandoned their house.

Michael Lambert: Nigel Farage's Political Career Is Collapsing
July 10, 2026 | Nigel Farage's political career is on the brink. The latest revelations regarding his financial dealings and the wider scrutiny on Reform UK suggest that what many thought was an unstoppable force is now facing a definitive collapse.
In this video, I break down the timeline of events, the serious questions regarding campaign funding, and why the narrative surrounding Farage has shifted so drastically. It’s a classic case of political hubris meeting intense public and legal scrutiny. I mean, the way this has been handled—or rather, mishandled—it's just… it's just not right. …
What amazes me about Nigel Farage is that so many of the so-called "great and the good" in this country take him so seriously as a future prime minister. He is the man who has impoverished the nation through Brexit and ruined its international standing; yet they are so ready and willing to talk of him one day soon occupying the top political job in this country! To me, the man is nothing but a charlatan and snake-oil salesman. A fraud. I couldn't and wouldn't vote for that man even if he was the last man standing! — © Mark Alexander

Hundreds of Residents Evacuated after Deadly Wildfires in Spain | BBC News
July 10, 2026 | At least 12 people have died in a wildfire in southern Spain, with early indications suggesting four of the victims are British, according to a local official.
Hundreds of emergency responders are working to contain the blaze around Los Gallardos, Almería, which appears to have been caused by a downed power line.
The bodies of the victims were found near the small village of Bédar, just outside Los Gallardos, while 23 others are still missing and hundreds of residents have been evacuated.
Regional president Juanma Moreno calls the impact of the fire "devastating" and warns the death toll could rise significantly.

» | Tagesspiegel | Donnerstag, 9. Gavin Newsom: We Need a National Tax on Billionaires. Here's Why
June 26, 2026 | It's time for a national billionaires tax and a new social contract.
10% of Americans own two-thirds of the wealth.
Wages have stagnated. The cost of living has skyrocketed. The system is fundamentally broken.
The federal tax code, a corporate code, and an inheritance code were written for a different set of Americans.
It’s time for an economic reset.
Earlier generations would have had a revolution by now. Have they gone out of fashion? Or will they come back into fashion?
By the way, fort hat “trickle-down economics” Gavin Newsom spoke of, we can thank the Old Gipper and Maggie for selling that crap to the public. — © Mark Alexander

A statement from her management said: “It is with great sadness that today we announce the death of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, DSG. “We send our deepest condolences to Ann’s family and friends. We ask that the family’s wish not to be contacted at this sad time is respected.”
Widdecombe was first elected to Parliament under Margaret Thatcher’s 1987 election victory, but rose the ranks of government under her successor, John Major. She was the prisons minister until the Tories lost to Tony Blair ’s New Labour landslide in 1997.
After failing to become Conservative leader in 2001, she stayed in the public eye with prominent TV appearances. They included a Louis Theroux special in 2002 and a memorable run on BBC ’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, when she partnered with Anton Du Beke to survive nine weeks of competition.

As U.S. Steps Up Attacks on Iran, Prospect of All-Out War Rises
THE NEW YORK TIMES: American officials said they were trying to safeguard maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said it had responded by firing at U.S. bases in Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
The U.S. military says it sharply increased its attacks on Iran this week, as both countries extended a cycle of hostilities that has all but shattered a truce intended to pave the way to a long-term peace deal.
American military officials say they hit about 170 targets in Iran during strikes on Tuesday and Wednesday, 15 times the number struck during a previous round of attacks in late June. U.S. Central Command said the strikes had hit air defense systems, drone and missile storage sites and logistics infrastructure along the Iranian coast.
The goal, military officials said, is to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Health Ministry said that U.S. attacks over the past two days had killed at least 14 people and injured 78 others across five provinces. Iran said it had responded by firing at U.S. military bases in Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. Jordan said it had also intercepted Iranian attacks.
The attacks have left the region deeply unsettled and seemingly caught in an ongoing cycle of sporadic war. They have raised the prospect of a return to the full-scale war that began in late February, when the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran. » | Max Bearak, Yeganeh Torbati, Eric Schmitt and Michael Levenson | Thursday, July 9, 2026

LGBTQ+ Cruise Ship Refused Entry to Egypt Days after Turkey Turned It Away
THE GUARDIAN: Scarlet Lady’s 2,000 passengers told of change as one of those onboard says they will ‘sparkle and spend elsewhere’
An LGBTQ+ cruise ship blocked from Turkish waters this week has been refused entry into Egypt.
The Scarlet Lady’s 2,000 passengers, including the Broadway performer Patti LuPone, woke on Thursday morning to find a note placed under their cabin doors informing them that the ship was urgently looking for alternative ports.
“Early this morning, we were informed that Scarlet Lady has been denied entry into Egyptian waters, and, as a result, will no longer be able to call in Alexandria today,” Rich Campbell, the chief executive of Atlantis Events, the tour group that chartered the Virgin Voyages ship, told passengers.
“I know how much this visit meant to so many of you. We successfully sailed a similar itinerary last year without issue. So we were surprised by this unfortunate decision,” he wrote.
The note concluded: “Please know that both the Atlantis and Virgin Voyages teams worked tirelessly to make this call in Alexandria a possibility. This news came as a surprise to all of us, and we’re just as disappointed as you are.”
The visit to Egypt was already a change to the planned tour, hastily arranged after the ship was refused entry to Turkey. No official reason has yet been given for the decision of the Egyptian government. » | Amelia Hill | Thursday, July 9, 2026
