An Outsider Takes an Inside Look at the Oxford ‘Chums’ Who Run the U.K.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Simon Kuper has written a book that captures Boris Johnson and other future Conservative politicians when they were ambitious and misbehaving undergrads, planning their rise to power.

LONDON — Soon after Simon Kuper began his first year of studies at Oxford University in 1988 he noticed an undergraduate who was always carrying an umbrella, wearing a dark double-breasted suit and old-school spectacles.

“He looked like a Victorian vicar,” Kuper recalled recently, drinking tea at a restaurant in the London neighborhood of Islington. “We made fun of him in the paper” — that would be Cherwell, Oxford’s student-run weekly, where Kuper was a reporter — “all the while not realizing that we were helping to build his brand.”

The man, and the brand, was Jacob Rees-Mogg, whose starchy, patrician style didn’t change as he rose through the Conservative Party ranks and who now serves in the cabinet of Prime Minister Boris Johnson as Minister of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency. He was just one member of a tribe of young men — others included Mr. Johnson; another future prime minister, David Cameron; a cabinet member, Michael Gove; and a former adviser to Mr. Johnson, Dominic Cummings — who coalesced at Oxford in the mid and late 1980s and would go on to run the country. » | David Segal | Saturday, May 14, 2022

Russia Warns That It Would Be a 'Mistake' for Finland and Sweden to Join Nato - BBC News

May 14, 2022 • Russia has said Finland and Sweden's entry into Nato would lead to a militarisation of the Baltic region.

Finland and Sweden are both expected to make a formal request to join the Western alliance, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinistö that joining Nato and abandoning Finland's neutral status would be a "mistake."

Putin also said there was no threat to Finland's security, with which Russia shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border.

The Russian foreign ministry has indicated there will be retaliation, and the country's decision to suspend electricity supplies to Finland is being seen as an early sign of this.

Taliban Plan New Restrictions for Women, Demanding Full Covering from Head to Toe | DW News

May 14, 2022 • Women and girls in Afghanistan face an onslaught of decrees from the Taliban designed to erase women from public life. The latest of these requires women to cover themselves from head to toe. The UN Security Council has held an emergency session to discuss the Taliban's restrictive policies on women in Afghanistan. The UK envoy said it was 'wrong and regressive' that the hardline group had banished women to the sidelines of life. The Taliban's curbs range from prohibiting women from traveling without a male chaperone, cutting them off from most employment and banning older girls from going to school. Measures designed to erase women from public life. The latest of these diktats requires women to cover themselves from head to toe.

Coffee Bad, Red Wine Good? Top Food Myths Busted

THE GUARDIAN: We’re being bombarded with conflicting advice on what we should and shouldn’t put into our bodies. Finally, here are the definitive answers, according to the experts

Illustration: Lalalimola/The Guardian/Getty Images

Modern nutritional science is only a hundred years old, so it’s no surprise that we’re constantly bamboozled by new and competing information about what to put into our bodies – or that we sometimes cling to reassuringly straightforward food myths which may no longer be true. In a world where official dietary advice seems to change all the time, and online opinions are loud and often baseless, we ask eight food and drink experts to cut through the noise and tell it like it is. » | Rebecca Seal | Saturday, May 14, 2022

Michael Lambert : Brexit Is Not Really Working and It Is Going to Get So Much Worse

May 14, 2022 • Brexit is not really working and it is likely to get so much worse. There are so many negative consequences to Brexit with no apparent advantages. Falling exports, a weakening pound, hold-ups at Dover, shortages of key workers and so many other problems.

Other negatives include the collapse of the London tourist business now that those from the EU require passports, the problems for Brits travelling to the EU including queues at the airports, roaming charges, green card motor insurance and health insurance.

But the most serious problems concern trade. It has become so difficult and almost impossible for small- and medium-sized businesses to sell to the EU. Internet purchases and sales are subject to such high surcharges that it is killing trade.

Brexit has put the UK behind such massive bureaucratic barriers that it is bound to seriously and irreversibly damage the UK economy. Furthermore many of the problems created by Brexit will add significantly to already rapidly increasing prices.

Ukraine War: UK Adds Putin's Former Wife to Sanctions List

Lyudmila Ocheretnaya (L) and Alina Kabaeva | GETTY IMAGES

BBC: The UK has imposed sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin's former wife and his alleged current girlfriend over the invasion of Ukraine.

Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, who was married to the president until 2014, and former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva, face UK travel bans and asset freezes.

The UK has now placed more than 1,000 people on its Russian sanctions list.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said Britain was "tightening the vice" on Mr Putin's "inner circle".

The UK was "exposing and targeting the shady network propping up Putin's luxury lifestyle", she said, and would "keep going with sanctions on all those aiding and abetting Putin's aggression until Ukraine prevails".

Ms Truss said sanctions against Russia should only be lifted when all of its troops had left Ukraine. » | Patrick Jackson, BBC News | Friday, May 13, 2022

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe Tells PM She ‘Lived in the Shadow’ of His Mistake

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has told Boris Johnson that for four years she lived in the shadow of his mistaken statement as foreign secretary that she had been in Iran to train journalists.

The United Arab Emirates’ long-ailing ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has died aged 73, the government’s state-run news agency has announced[.]

Khalifa, the president of the UAE, oversaw much of the country’s blistering economic growth and his name was immortalised on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, after bailing out debt-crippled Dubai during its financial crisis more than a decade ago.

The UAE’s ministry of presidential affairs announced a 40-day period of mourning and a three-day suspension of work in all ministries and the private sector beginning on Friday, including flags to be flown at half-staff.

He had long ceased having involvement in the day-to-day affairs of ruling the country. Instead, his half-brother, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, was seen as the de-facto ruler and the decision-maker of major foreign policy decisions, such as joining a Saudi-led war in Yemen and spearheading an embargo on neighbouring Qatar in recent years. » | Associated Press | Friday, May 13, 2022

Cryptocurrencies Melt Down in a ‘Perfect Storm’ of Fear and Panic

THE NEW YORK TIMES: A steep sell-off that gained momentum this week starkly illustrated the risks of the experimental and unregulated digital currencies.

A crash in cryptocurrency prices has wiped away more than $300 billion in value this week. | Samuel Corum for The New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO — The price of Bitcoin plunged to its lowest point since 2020. Coinbase, the large cryptocurrency exchange, tanked in value. A cryptocurrency that promoted itself as a stable means of exchange collapsed. And more than $ 300 billion was wiped out by a crash in cryptocurrency prices since Monday.

The crypto world went into a full meltdown this week in a sell-off that graphically illustrated the risks of the experimental and unregulated digital currencies. Even as celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and tech moguls like Elon Musk have talked up crypto, the accelerating declines of virtual currencies like Bitcoin and Ether show that, in some cases, two years of financial gains can disappear overnight.

The moment of panic amounted to the worst reset in cryptocurrencies since Bitcoin plummeted 80 percent in 2018. But this time, the falling prices have broader impact because more people and institutions hold the currencies. Critics said the collapse was long overdue, while some traders compared the alarm and fear to the start of the 2008 financial crisis.

LONDON — One of the biggest donors to Britain’s Conservative Party is suspected of secretly funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to the party from a Russian account, according to a bank alert filed to Britain’s national law enforcement agency.

The donation, of $630,225, was made in February 2018 in the name of Ehud Sheleg, a wealthy London art dealer who was most recently the Conservative Party’s treasurer. The money was part of a fund-raising blitz that helped propel Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his party to a landslide victory in the 2019 general election.

But documents filed with the authorities last year and reviewed by The New York Times say that the money originated in a Russian account of Mr. Sheleg’s father-in-law, Sergei Kopytov, who was once a senior politician in the previous pro-Kremlin government of Ukraine. He now owns real estate and hotel businesses in Crimea and Russia. » | Jane Bradley | Thursday, May 12, 2022

Finland must apply to join Nato without delay in the wake of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, its president and prime minister have said, confirming a historic change in the Nordic country’s security policy after decades of military non-alignment.

Sauli Niinistö and Sanna Marin made the call in a joint statement, adding: “We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days.”

Nato membership would strengthen Finland’s security, the two leaders said, and as a member of Nato: “Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. Finland must apply for Nato membership as a matter of urgency.”

North Korea Reports Its First Covid Outbreak.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, ordered a national lockdown after a subvariant of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was found in the capital.

SEOUL — North Korea on Thursday reported its first outbreak of the coronavirus, declaring a “maximum emergency” and ordering all cities and counties in the nation of 25 million to lock down to fight the spread.

It was an abrupt change for a secretive country that had long insisted it had no cases of the virus that first emerged in neighboring China more than two years ago. Outside experts had been skeptical, however, citing a lack of extensive Covid testing and the North’s threadbare public health system.

The danger posed by an outbreak is greater in North Korea than in most other nations because most of its people remain unvaccinated. Outside health experts have long questioned the North’s ability to fight a large-scale outbreak although its regime is capable of imposing totalitarian control on residents’ movement. » | Choe Sang-Hun | Published: Wednesday, May 11, 2022; Updated: Thursday, May 12, 2022

» | Par Arnaud Leparmentier (New York, correspondant) | mercredi 11 mai 2022

The Côte d'Azur boasts a breathtakingly gorgeous landscape. But its mythos is more than the sum of it beautiful parts. The whole world associates the narrow coastal strip on the French Mediterranean coast with sun, stars and scandals.

In Saint Tropez, a former fishing town, a new and newly sensual art of living was popularized thanks to the young Brigitte Bardot. On the eastern part of the coast, Oscar winner Grace Kelly conquered the principality of Monaco with her marriage to Prince Rainier. The matchmaker? The Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis, who wanted to burnish the dwarf state’s image.

One of the most glamorous film festivals in the world was established in Cannes. After that, it seemed everyone came to the Côte. At the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, the paths of the famous crossed again and again. For 150 years the hotel has been home to artists, queens and kings, divas and stars. Andererseits lockten sie in Amerikas Schulen Tausende Jugendliche in die Nikotinsucht. «Einstein» geht dem Rauchen und seiner Zukunft auf den Grund. Die Sendung ist vom 9.5.2019

I smoked my last cigarette on April 10th. I had been a smoker for many years. I used to enjoy smoking a lot. I can honestly say that I smoked out of pleasure, not out of addiction. (Only the few believe me when I say that; but it happens to be true.) I smoked exactly twenty cigarettes a day for most of my adult life.

Truthfully, I don't miss smoking at all. I have given up because I wanted to do so and because it has become a very expensive habit. I therefore started asking myself if I was really getting enough pleasure from the cigarettes I smoked by comparison with the amount of money I was spending on them. Clearly, I wasn't.

Furthermore, smoking today has become such a hassle: one cannot smoke anywhere indoors in public. Not even in friends' homes. The only place left to smoke is in one's own home. I have never smoked in the street. It wasn't the "done thing" when I was growing up, so I never got used to doing that. (It sounds a little old-fashioned, I know; but that's how it was back in the day.)

The biggest problem for me of not smoking is weight gain. That happens not so much because one eats that much more, though that can happen because smoking is an appetite suppressant, but it also happens because smoking increases one's metabolism. So after giving up the habit, the metabolism slows down.

E-cigarettes have never appealed to me. In any case, I have no intention, or desire, to rid myself of one habit only to replace it with another. Further, I don't trust e-cigarettes. Scientists can say all manner of things about them being safer, but the fact of the matter is clear to me: Nobody knows the long-term cpnequences of vaping. And for one simple reason: We haven't got long-term data on the habit.

I hope my new-found smoke-free existence lasts. – © Mark
