Arab Spring Leads to Wave of Middle East State Executions

THE GUARDIAN: Arab uprisings lead to rise in capital punishment in Middle East but Amnesty finds some comfort in world figures – even in China

Middle Eastern countries have stepped up their use of capital punishment, executing hundreds of people as rulers across the region seek to deter the wave of uprisings sweeping the Arab countries.

Despite a significant reduction in the number of countries that used the death penalty worldwide last year, there was a sharp rise in executions in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Yemen, according to Amnesty International's annual capital punishment survey, released on Tuesday.

China remained at the top of the list of the countries with the worst record of executions last year. Authorities in China maintained their policy of refusing to release precise figures on the death penalty in the country, which they consider a state secret. » | Saeed Kamali Dehghan and Ed Pilkington in New York | Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Bahrain Leans on Grand Prix Race to Restore Image

Bahrain was the first Middle Eastern country to host a Formula One race, and it came as a heavy blow to the ruling Sunni monarchy's pride when their deadly crackdown on a massive Shia-based uprising last year prompted Formula One to (reluctantly) cancel the race. This year, the goverment is bent on holding the Grand Prix and says ticket sales are racing along. But activists, who are lobbying again for the race's cancelation, say the authorities' reform efforts are empty gestures, and they have promised to disrupt the race. Tunisia Says Constitution Will Not Cite Islamic Law

THE NEW YORK TIMES: CAIRO — Tunisia’s ruling Islamist party, Ennahda, said on Monday that the country’s post-revolution constitution would not mention Islamic law as a source of legislation, signaling a forceful break with ultraconservatives who have been demanding an Islamic state.

Instead, a drafting committee will preserve language in Tunisia’s current constitution that refers to Islam as the state’s religion and Arabic as its language, according to Said Ferjani, a member of the political bureau of Ennahda, the Islamist party that leads Tunisia’s government.

He and other Ennahda leaders framed the decision as a bid to unify the country’s disparate political factions during a delicate political transition. “There is a huge consensus within Ennahda. We have to show leadership,” Mr. Ferjani said. “We want everyone to get involved.” » | Kareem Fahim | Monday, March 26, 2012
Norway Jails Islamic Cleric For Making Death Threats

RTT NEWS: A court in Norway on Monday jailed Iraq-born Islamic cleric Mullah Krekar for five years for making death threats against Norwegian officials and others.

Krekar, who arrived in Norway as a refugee in 1991, was found guilty of making death threats against former Norwegian Minister Erna Solberg as well as three Kurds [sic] immigrants living in Norway.

The Kurdish Islamic cleric has consistently denied any wrongdoings in both cases, and indicated in court on Monday that he planned to appeal.

The 55-year-old cleric, whose real name is Najmuddin Faraj Ahmad, was accused of threatening the three Norwegian Kurds after they burned pages of the Holy Koran or insulted it in another way. » | RTT News Staff Writer | RTTNews | Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Hair Product for 'Real Men': Turkish TV Ad Features Hitler to Sell Shampoo

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: A Turkish TV commercial has sparked international criticism for featuring Adolf Hitler to praise the virtues of a "hundred percent men's shampoo." Critics have called it "repulsive," but it follows a controversial trend among firms to sell their wares with supposedly humorous references to Hitler and the Nazi era.

A Turkish cosmetics company is under fire for featuring Adolf Hitler in a television advert for men's shampoo, but it continues to run on the country's state television network despite widespread outrage.

The 12-second commercial shows black-and-white footage of Hitler delivering an impassioned speech, dubbed with a high-pitched voice screaming the following words in clipped Turkish:
"Why are you using woman's shampoo if you're not wearing a woman's dress? Now there's the hundred percent men's shampoo Biomen. A real man uses Biomen."
Media reports said that Turkish state television has so far declined to remove the commercial, despite criticism from Jewish groups in Turkey and abroad. The US-based Anti-Defamation League released a statement saying it was "repulsed" at the commercial. » | cro – with wire reports | Monday, March 26, 2012

Barack Obama Caught Hinting at Concessions to Dmitry Medvedev

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama was accused of putting his desire for re-election before America's national security on Monday, after being caught hinting to President Dmitry Medvedev that he would offer concessions to Russia on defence if he were re-elected.

The US president was captured by a live microphone telling Mr Medvedev that he would have "more flexibility" in negotiations over contentious plans for a missile shield in Europe if he beat his Republican challenger in November.

Delivering a message for president-elect Vladimir Putin, Mr Obama said: "On all these issues, but particularly missile defence, this can be solved, but it's important for him to give me space.

"This is my last election," he added, in a discussion following a meeting in Seoul, South Korea. "After my election, I have more flexibility." "Yeah, I understand," Mr Medvedev replied. "I understand your message about space". He added: "I understand. I transmit this information to Vladimir." » | Jon Swaine | Washington | Monday, March 26, 2012

» | Carsten Volkery | London | Montag, 26. März 2012

I despair of this country's so-called 'democracy'. The word plutocracy comes to mind even as I write this. Toulouse Siege: Blaming Killings on Immigration Controls 'Makes No Sense', Nicolas Sarkozy Says

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Nicolas Sarkozy has blasted as “senseless” French National Front candidate Marine Le Pen’s claims that the Toulouse murders were linked to immigration.

Losing steam in the polls for round one of presidential elections on April 22, Miss Le Pen on Sunday launched a virulent attack on immigration, linking it to what she called a “green fascist” wave of Islamic fundamentalism threatening to unfurl over France after the deaths of seven this month at the hands of the self-styled al Qaeda killer.

The 23-year old Frenchman of Algerian descent was killed by elite French police in a shoot-out in his apartment last Thursday after a 32-hour siege.

“How many Mohamed Merahs are there in the boats and planes that arrive in France full of immigrants ?,” Miss Le Pen asked at a rally in Nantes, western France.

“Mohamed Merah is perhaps only the tip of the iceberg... This is not about the madness of one man but the advance of green fascism in our country."

Reacting on Monday morning, Mr Sarkozy said it was senseless to link Mr Merah to immigration as he was French. "We can't equate Mohamed Merah, born in France, French, to the children of immigrants arriving by boat,” he told France Info. “He was simply a monster.” » | Henry Samuel | Paris | Monday, March 26, 2012

Another Twitter User Accused of Apostasy in Saudi Arabia

EMIRATES 24|7: Arab expatriate offends in remarks on micro-blogging site

An Arab man in Saudi Arabia is accused of offending Islam and its Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) in remarks on his Twitter page, the second man to be charged with apostasy in the Gulf Kingdom.

Hundreds of Twitter users joined hands in demanding the arrest of Mohammed Salama on apostasy charges as was the case of Hamza Kashgari who is in jail for offending the Prophet (PBUH) in comments on his Twitter page.

“Mohammed Salama has followed the same path followed by Hamza Kashgari,” the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq said without specifying his nationality.

It said Salama had just cancelled his page from Twitter for fear of arrest but added he had been sacked from work at a dairy company in Saudi Arabia.

The paper, which carried part of Salama’s remarks, said he claimed the Prophet (pbuh) had once tried to commit a suicide because he doubted the Koran.

It also quoted Salama as saying on Twitter : “If God gives chances but does not forget, then why He forgot [sic] Israel and did not give chances to Gaddafi.”

The paper also said Salama believed that God “will let us enjoy liquor, usury and sorcery in Paradise after we were deprived of them in life.” » | Staff | Sunday, March 25, 2012

Cash for Cameron: Murdoch’s Glee?

BBC: Hell hath no fury like a media mogul scorned.

Witness Rupert Murdoch's tweet: "@rupertmurdoch: Of course there must be a full independent inquiry on both sides. In great detail, and with consequences. Trust must be established."

And the Sun's editorial which says: "Millions will wonder if Osborne scrapped the 50p rate after a few cosy lunches with millionaire backers."

Could it be that Rupert Murdoch wishes to see the man who set up the Leveson Inquiry go through the same agonisingly painful scrutiny as he has?

And why not, many will ask, after the extraordinary video of the Tory co-treasurer offering to sell access to the prime minister's private dinner table and his policy unit. Shouldn't we be told which donors the PM has meetings and dinners with?

Number 10 are for now sticking to the line that what happens in David Cameron's private flat is, well, private. However, they must know that it is very hard to explain the distinction between what happens downstairs on official business and upstairs on private business. So, the pressure will mount, particularly as Mr Cameron himself has said that transparency "is the best disinfectant".

We are already told who gives money to political parties, but what access they get in return is not published. On the Today programme this morning Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude confirmed what the Conservative website advertises - that you can pay to have dinner with the PM by spending £50,000 to join the Leader's Group. » | Nick Robinson | Political Editor | BBC | Monday, March 26, 2012

Andrew Pierce: Barrow Boy with the Midas Touch

THE MAIL ON SUNDAY: Raised on a rough East London council estate, Peter Cruddas, who left school without any qualifications after his father drank himself to death, is a shining example of how it is possible to rise through the ranks to super-rich status.

A billionaire with a private jet and homes in London, Hertfordshire, the South of France and Monaco, he was – at least at first glance – an inspired choice by David Cameron to be the Tories’ new joint treasurer.

But many senior Tories warned when he was appointed last June that it would end in tears.

There is no doubt he has the Midas touch, having transformed his internet-based financial services company CMC Markets, which he launched in 1989 with only £10,000, into an international success story. It employs hundreds of people as far afield as Australia, Canada and China.

But the no-nonsense, straight-talking style of Mr Cruddas, 58, is not for the faint-hearted. He prides himself on his Del Boy-style ‘cockney geezer’ background. His favourite catchphrase is: ‘I am just a plain meat-two-veg-and-gravy sort of man.’

His lifestyle, however, is far from plain. He wears designer suits, buys identical pairs of fine Italian shoes so that he can put them in all his houses, and always wears a £250,000 limited edition platinum Zenith watch – just one of 15 similar watches that he boasts he owns.

There are Bentleys and Porsche Cayenne turbos on his various driveways. His main home, a £10million apartment on Monaco’s Avenue de Spélugues, enjoys one of Monte Carlo’s swankiest addresses close to the legendary casino. Read on and comment » | Andrew Pierce | Sunday, March 25, 2012

Qatada, the Happiest Man in England: Brother Tells of Hate-preacher's Delight at Being Handed a More Expensive Taxpayer-funded Home

THE MAIL ON SUNDAY: Terror suspect's new home has more bedrooms, a bigger garden and more fittings / His family are said to be 'delighted' at the move / The 51-year-old had requested a move from previous home worth £400,000

Abu Qatada has been upgraded to a larger taxpayer-funded home since his release from jail last month, the Mail can reveal.

The terror suspect has told relatives in his native Jordan that he is the ‘happiest man in England’ after he was rehoused to the more expensive property.

His wife and five children are also said to be ‘delighted’ with the move, because their new home has more bedrooms, a bigger garden and more modern fittings.

Qatada, who was once described by a judge as ‘Osama Bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe’, asked to switch houses a week after being freed from Long Lartin jail in February.

The hate preacher had initially moved into a £400,000 home in Wembley, North London – organised by the local authority – where his family were said to be paying £1,900 a month rent which they funded through benefits.

But the 51-year-old requested a move after complaints from the property’s owner, who was furious to discover he had unwittingly allowed the cleric to become his tenant.

Qatada’s brother, Ibrahim Othman, said: ‘He told us they have now given him a very nice new place, bigger than the first house he went to after the British let him go.

‘He is really enjoying his new home and so are his family. The inside is very modern and has been done up more nicely, it has more bedrooms and a larger garden.

‘It is better for the family. They are all very happy in the larger house.

‘My brother cannot work so the British government fund his family to live there. The new house is costing more but he does not have to pay it because there is no way he can earn money.’ Read on and comment » | Tom Kelly | Sunday, March 25, 2012

US Election 2012: Rick Santorum Calls Mitt Romney 'Worst Possible Republican' Nominee

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Rick Santorum attacked rival Mitt Romney on Sunday calling him "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama" as the former Massachusetts governor looked on pace to clinch the Republican party nomination.

Santorum told voters that Romney is "uniquely disqualified" to be theRepublican's presidential pick and urged his supporters to stand with him even as he faces an increasingly improbable pathway to the nomination, despite an easy victory in the Louisiana primary the night before.

With all Louisiana precincts reporting, Santorum captured 49 percent of the vote to 27 percent for Romney. Newt Gingrich, was far back at 16 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 6 percent.

Although the victory gives Santorum bragging rights and 10 more delegates, it does not change the overall dynamics of the race. Pakistan Supreme Court to Decide Fate of Hindu Woman in Muslim Marriage Row

THE GUARDIAN: Rinkle Kumari, 19, claims she was kidnapped, converted to Islam and married against her will

The fate of a Pakistani Hindu woman who claims she was kidnapped, forcibly converted to Islam and married against her will is to be decided this week, after weeks of campaigning by the country's Hindu minority.

The case of 19-year-old Rinkle Kumari has outraged Hindus from her small town in the south of the country, where community leaders accuse Muslims of preying on Hindu girls of marriageable age.

Some claim similar cases are helping to fuel a steady outflow of Pakistan's tiny Hindu community as families choose to move to Hindu-majority India instead.

In a hearing beginning on Monday, the supreme court in Islamabad will try to get to the bottom of the hotly contested versions of events. » | Jon Boone in Islamabad | Sunday, March 25, 2012
Assad Family Targeted by New EU Sanctions

European Union states have imposed sanctions on Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as officials seek to increase pressure on Damascus to end its violent assault on anti-government strongholds. Foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Friday also imposed asset freezes and bans on travel to the EU on several other family members including the Syrian leader's mother, and banned European companies from doing business with two additional Syrian entities, EU officials said. A full list of sanctions targets will be made public on Saturday when the decision comes into force. EU diplomats said the list included the Syrian president's wife Asma and family. "She is on the list. It's the whole clan," one EU diplomat said. Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela reports from London.

Papst in Mexiko begeistert empfangen - Kritik an Kuba

Tunisian Islamists Step Up Demand for Islamic State

REUTERS.COM: Thousands of Tunisian Islamists took to the streets on Sunday to step up their demands for the creation of an Islamic state in one of the most secular Arab nations.

About 8,000 conservative Salafi Islamists filled the capital's Habib Bourguiba Avenue, a focal point of the 2011 revolution that sparked uprisings across the Arab world.

Waving black flags, they shouted slogans demanding that Islamic law, or sharia, be defined as the main source of legislation in Tunisia's new constitution.
