Almost a billion people worldwide work in the co-operative sector, a lifestyle that includes non-profit community organisations and businesses that are owned and managed by the people who uses its services. Israel's kibbutzim (communal settlements in Hebrew) are an example of co-operatives that have been forced to adapt to modern times.
