President Macron Could Have Said More to Curtail ‘Mayhem’ in France
Oct 19, 2026 | “He could have announced a change in public order doctrine in an attempt to get hold and stop the complete mayhem that we saw on Saturday… he didn't do that either.”
Facing widespread violence and looting, President Macron failed to deliver the bold policy shifts needed to rein in the protests, says Paris correspondent for The Times Adam Sage.

France’s Far Right Seizes the Moment as Rioting Stuns the Country
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The National Rally, already ahead in the polls, presented itself as the party best placed to restore law and order.

After riots erupted this weekend in cities across France, its centrist government blamed the main far-left party, accusing its politicians of inciting the violence. That party blamed the government, accusing it of stirring public anger through years of bad governance and heavy-handed policing.
What did the main far-right party do? It blamed both, and launched into campaign mode. >br />
“We are paying for decades of being soft on crime, of weak authority, of the moral, psychological, and material disarmament of our internal security forces,” Jordan Bardella, the president of the far-right National Rally party, said after emerging from a police station in central Paris on Sunday. He said had gone there to support police officers.
Then he addressed France’s “honest citizens” who were stunned on Sunday by the smashed storefronts and burned-out businesses destroyed by rioters the night before. He said they had a vital role to play in reinstating national stability. And that would be by voting in the coming election for his party.
“People need to wake up now,” Mr. Bardella said. “They need to make the right political choices, and in any case, we stand ready to restore order in the country.”
Sunday was a day of mourning, shock and finger pointing in France. The day before, huge peaceful protests for better school conditions and against rising living costs were overshadowed by black-clad and often masked agitators of unclear affiliation who attacked government buildings and shops across the country, sometimes stealing wine or electronics.
For the National Rally, which bills itself as the party of law and order as well as an advocate for expelling unauthorized immigrants, Sunday was also a day of political opportunity. It is six months before a presidential election that the party’s candidate, Marine Le Pen, is the favorite to win. » | Catherine Porter | Reporting from Paris | Monday, October 18, 2026

Is American Democracy Safe? | Martin Wolf on the US Midterms
Oct 17, 2026 | As Americans prepare to vote in the November 3 midterm elections, FT chief economics commentator Martin Wolf asks what the result will mean for Donald Trump, the future of US democracy and America's place in the world.
In the first of a six-part series of interviews with leading historians and political analysts, Martin speaks to the scholar and former Republican adviser Robert Kagan, who has spent a decade warning about Trump's authoritarian ambitions.
They discuss how Trump has accumulated so much power, whether America's democratic institutions can still constrain him, and what might happen if Republicans lose control of Congress.
Could these elections mark a turning point for American democracy or has the country already gone too far down the road towards authoritarianism?

France Reels After Largest Riots in Years
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Centrist and leftist leaders blamed each other after anti-government protests devolved into chaos.

France was in a state of shock on Sunday, as citizens woke to streets littered with shattered glass and images of burned-out government buildings after the country’s largest demonstrations in years devolved into riots and looting.
The unrest on Saturday — which led to some 1,200 arrests — caused widespread damage to several symbols of the state, including a 19th-century city hall in Limoges, a town in central France renowned for its porcelain, that was largely destroyed in a nighttime arson attack.
Rioters attacked city halls from Lille in northern France to Marseille in the south, where masked infiltrators broke into the local government headquarters and tipped over a bust of Marianne, a symbol of the French Republic. Fires also destroyed a tourist office in Lyon.
On Sunday, that violence had given way to a political blame game. Government officials accused the far left of stirring up the unrest, and a left-wing leader blamed the government.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu placed the blame for the chaos squarely on a far-left party, France Unbowed. The leader of that party, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, stands a chance of making the runoff in next year’s presidential election to succeed President Emmanuel Macron. » | Catherine Porter and Ségolène Le Stradic | Reporting from Paris | Sunday, October 18, 2026

Mussolini wasn’t So Bad, Was He?
Oct 17, 2026 | Was Benito Mussolini, as some still insist, really a "visionary modernizer?" Or is the claim one of the 20th century's most enduring myths?
In this video, we examine common perceptions of Mussolini and his fascist regime — from infrastructure and social welfare to empire, propaganda, and public support. We compare the popular narratives with historical evidence and illuminate how Mussolini came to serve as a blueprint for Adolf Hitler.
Whether you believe Mussolini's legacy was unfairly dismissed or see him as a symbol of tyranny and oppression, this explainer challenges assumptions, uncovers forgotten facts and asks a simple question: How much of what we think we know is actually true?

Trump’s Pause on Russia Sanctions Is ‘Reward’ for Putin, Zelenskyy Says
THE GUARDIAN: Ukrainian president warns it will embolden Russian leader and intensify war as Moscow hits country’s power plants
The lifting of sanctions will continue, and I believe that the “diesel deal” is the first step,’ said Zelenskyy. Photograph: Thierry Monasse/Getty Images
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described Donald Trump’s decision to roll back sanctions on Russia as a “reward” for Vladimir Putin and warned it will embolden the Russian leader and intensify the Kremlin’s war, as Moscow launched one of its worst strikes yet on Ukraine’s power plants in an attempt to black out the country’s cities before winter.
The Ukrainian president also said he expected the Trump administration to lift more sanctions against Russia in the future and called for Europe to establish its own negotiations with Moscow as the US has sought better ties and business deals with the Kremlin.
“Unfortunately, the lifting of sanctions will continue, and I believe that the ‘diesel deal’ is the first step,” said Zelenskyy on Saturday. “Unfortunately, it seems to me that this cannot stop Putin; on the contrary, he feels joy and happiness that he has such support.”
In a social media message earlier, Zelenskyy wrote: “A US sanctions blackout, easing pressure on the aggressor, financial rewards for Putin – all of this only encourages him to keep attacking. We must not give up ground.
“We must keep trying to end the war. To end it, not give Putin every reason to continue it indefinitely.” » | Andrew Roth in Kyiv | Saturday, October 17, 2026
Donald Trump is a turncoat and a traitor. He is turning his back on his western allies to cosy up to Vlad, his ‘bromantic’ chum and marionettist. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, by contrast, is a patriotic, determined, and noble warrior for his country. He knows the enemy well and behaves and plans strategically and wisely using this knowledge. It should not be overlooked that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his brave and long-suffering compatriots are fighting not only for the continued existence of their own country, but also for the continued existence of Europe as a whole, too. He knows that if Ukraine were to fall to the enemy, another European nation will be next on the line. Other European nations will then be in grave danger of falling, one by one, until Putin has satisfied and achieved his goals and objectives. Police have fired teargas and clashed with protesters supporting high school student grievances, as demonstrations across France were boosted by other groups angry over high prices and the fraying of a social welfare system.
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across the country, and tensions erupted on the fringes of the nationwide demonstrations over absent teachers, decrepit school buildings and police violence.
In Marseille, protesters stormed the town hall, ramming the door with security barriers they removed from the street. They briefly managed to enter the municipal building, where a protester spray-painted an “A” for anarchy on a wall before the police removed them.

» | Peter Steiniger | Samstag, 17. Anne Applebaum on the Contradiction of Trump’s Support of Russia
Oct 16, 2026 | Why is Putin pushing Trump to stop Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil refineries? Historian and journalist Anne Applebaum argues that these attacks are putting real pressure on Moscow — and that Trump’s approach risks giving Russia more time to continue its war against Ukraine.
The Kyiv Independent’s Tim Zadorozhnyy speaks with Applebaum about Trump’s diesel deal with Russia, U.S. pressure on Kyiv to concede territory, and why the administration’s peace envoys misunderstand the motivations behind Russia’s invasion.
