Disregarding the UN charter’s emphasis on the peaceful resolution of disputes, he doubled down on his violent unilateralism while denigrating the global issues that the UN is designed to address.
For many, the headline remark was his musing about whether to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” of Iran. “Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?”
But it was probably less a genuine threat than a clumsy effort to influence negotiations where he has little leverage. Trump is in desperate quest of some face-saving gesture that will allow him to feign “victory” and extract himself from his disastrous war of choice.
He spoke of destroying the “Islamic Republic”, which might imply the Iranian military, a legitimate military target. The rise of a far-right party in Germany, the Alternative for Germany, represents a skewing of history, fueled by its own, sometimes imaginary vision of the past. It feeds, analysts say, on widespread alienation from a liberal, multicultural, united Germany committed to the memory of the Holocaust and Nazi crimes.
The AfD is now the most popular party nationwide, polls say, close to governing a German state for the first time, and did well again in two more state elections on Sunday. It has benefited from economic and industrial decline and a sense of insecurity, which the party blames on the extensive migration of young Muslims in the last decade.
The party came first in the small eastern German state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and a good third in Berlin, while the Christian Democratic Union of Chancellor Friedrich Merz did poorly, in what he himself called “a disaster.” The results will heighten talk of the party’s replacing the unpopular chancellor before the end of his term.

Sie sollten sich besser benehmen“, sagte Trump nach Angaben des Fox-News-Korrespondenten Trey Yingst in einem Telefongespräch am Sonntag.
Yingst berichtete anschließend bei Fox News, Trump befinde sich mit Blick auf das weitere Vorgehen gegen den Iran im „Entscheidungsmodus“. Sep 12, 2026 | Chicken cacciatore is one of my favourite things to make with a whole chicken. I like to have the butcher cut it into pieces, then cook everything together in one pan with white wine, olives, garlic, rosemary and sage. It’s simple food, but exactly the kind of thing you’d expect to eat in the Italian countryside.
A lot of people are used to chicken cacciatore with tomatoes, but this version is made in bianco.
Cacciatore means “hunter-style,” and this is the kind of chicken dish hunters would have prepared before tomatoes became common in Italian cooking.
A whole chicken, a few vegetables, some herbs and wine, and you’ve got a rustic Italian family dinner on the table.
