American Jews Reclaim German Citizenship | DW News

Jan 29, 2026 | Once unthinkable: At 103, Holocaust survivor Ruth Gruenthal has reclaimed the German citizenship the Nazi regime stripped from her because she was Jewish. After surviving Nazi persecution and rebuilding her life in the U.S., Ruth became a psychotherapist and raised a family spanning four generations — many of whom have now also reclaimed German citizenship.

Born in Hamburg in 1922, imprisoned in France, and forced to flee Nazi persecution as a teenager, Ruth rebuilt her life in the United States, where she lived for decades. But recent political developments, rising antisemitism, and fears of growing authoritarianism in the U.S. have shaken her sense of security.

Ruth is not alone. An increasing number of Jewish Americans with family histories shaped by the Holocaust are applying to restore German citizenship — not necessarily to leave, but to have a safeguard: the option to move to Germany should conditions in the United States deteriorate further.

Germany allows victims of Nazi persecution and their descendants to reclaim citizenship that was deliberately taken from them. In New York alone, applications have more than doubled in recent years.

Before the Great Recession, “The Warning” | Full Documentary

Jan 27, 2026 | Long before the economic meltdown in the U.S. that led to the Great Recession, one woman tried to raise the alarm about the threat to the financial system.

“The Warning” unearthed the hidden history of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression in the United States. Brooksley Born spoke for the first time on television about her failed campaign to regulate the secretive, multitrillion-dollar derivatives market whose crash helped trigger the financial collapse in the fall of 2008.

“We didn’t truly know the dangers of the market, because it was a dark market,” said Born, who was the head of an obscure federal regulatory agency — the Commodity Futures Trading Commission [CFTC]. Born not only warned of the potential for economic meltdown in the late 1990s, but also tried to convince the country’s key economic powerbrokers to take actions that could have helped avert the crisis.

The documentary also revealed an intense battle among high-ranking members of former President Bill Clinton’s administration and uncovered a concerted effort not to regulate the emerging, highly complex, and lucrative derivatives markets, which became a ticking time-bomb within the American economy.

It is rather shocking to me that a man as clever as Alan Greenspan was considered to be was such a devotee of Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand was an émigrée from the Soviet Union. She had very extreme, laissez-faire ideas which were verging on the anarchic. That Alan Greenspan, known as ‘The Wizard’ because of his superior understanding of economics, couldn’t see through Ayn Rand’s cranky theories is enigmatic, to say the least. — © Mark Alexander

Horrific Human Experiments of the Holocaust

Jan 27, 2026 | Adolf Hitler's regime of terror and destruction inflicted brutal horrors throughout the Third Reich. Ideas of making Germany great again and establishing a pure race indoctrinated the German people to support him indefinitely. The Nazi Regime under Adolf Hitler imposed some of the most insane forms of eugenics and medical experiments the world has ever seen.

It’s only a small step from MaGGA (Make Germany Great Again) to MAGA (Make America Great Again). And Hiter’s calls to make Germans a “pure race” again immediately remind one of Trump’s multiple utterances about immigrants “poisoning the blood” of America, for by implication, if Americans’ blood has been poisoned, it is no longer pure. What went on in Hitler’s Germany is so reminiscent of what is going on in Trump’s America. It truly is alarming. — © Mark Alexander

Melania Trump Documentary Pulled From South African Theaters

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The distributor, which was set to release the film on Friday, said it had canceled the theatrical premiere because of “recent developments,” but declined to specify.

“Melania,” the new documentary about the first lady, scheduled to open worldwide on Friday, has been pulled from theaters in South Africa after the film’s local distributor said on Wednesday that it would no longer release it.

“Based on recent developments, we’ve taken the decision to not go ahead with a theatrical release in territory,” said Thobashan Govindarajulu, the head of sales and marketing for the distributor, Filmfinity.

Mr. Govindarajulu declined to say what recent developments had led to the decision, but said that the company was not pressured or asked to pull the film. “That was our decision,” he said. The decision was first reported by the South African outlet News24.

The promotion of the film about Melania Trump has been as polarizing as her husband, President Trump, who has touted the movie as a “must watch.” But theaters have reported thin advanced ticket sales, despite Amazon investing $40 million for the rights to the film and spending tens of millions more on marketing, which industry analysts saw as a big risk. » | John Eligon | Reporting from Johannesburg | Wednesday, January 28, 2026

The Melania Film Is a 'Vanity Project' No One Will Watch | Josh Glancy

Jan 29, 2026 | "This is a sop."

The Melania film is "soap propaganda" but does show that the American commercial establishment has "bent the knee" to Trump, says associate editor of The Sunday Times, Josh Glancy.

Class and Trump are oxymorons, naturally, but I could not help but notice that the font that has been used for Melania's name in this vanity project film is the same font as the fashion House of Chanel uses! Chanel, of course, is synonymous with, the epitome of, class (and style) in the world of fashion. So, as Melania is so self-evidently a dedicated follower of fashion and behaves as the arbiter of style extraordinaire—she would almost certainly insist that she is a trendsetter rather than a follower—but nevertheless, I am convinced that the font that has been used for the name of this film has been used for subliminal purposes: they wanted the person reading the name of the film to associate Melania with class (and style) without realising that they are doing so! — © Mark Alexander

Trump Threatens Iran With ‘Massive Armada’ and Presses a Set of Demands

THE NEW YORK TIMES: U.S. and European officials say they have put three demands in front of the Iranians, including a permanent end to all enrichment of uranium.

President Trump sharply intensified his threats against Iran on Wednesday, suggesting that if it did not agree to a set of demands the administration had made of the country’s leaders, he could soon mount an attack “with speed and violence.”

Mr. Trump’s threat of a second direct attack on Iran by U.S. forces in eight months came as the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, along with other naval ships, bombers and fighter jets, took up positions in the region in striking distance of the country. Mr. Trump explicitly compared the buildup to the forces he amassed near Venezuela late last year, just ahead of the operation that seized Nicolás Maduro and his wife in the middle of the night early in January.

Mr. Trump gave no specifics about the deal he was demanding, saying only that a “massive Armada” was heading toward Iran and that the country should make a deal. But U.S. and European officials say that in talks, they have put three demands in front of the Iranians: a permanent end to all enrichment of uranium, limits on the range and number of their ballistic missiles, and an end to all support for proxy groups in the Middle East, including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis operating in Yemen.

Notably absent from those demands — and from Mr. Trump’s post on Truth Social on Wednesday morning — was any reference to protecting the protesters who took to the streets in Iran in December, convulsing the country and creating the latest crisis for its government. Mr. Trump had promised, in past social media posts, to come to their aid, but has barely mentioned them in recent weeks. » | David E. Sanger, Tyler Pager and Farnaz Fassihi | David E. Ecuador Objects After ICE Agent Tries to Enter Minneapolis Consulate

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Video showed diplomatic staff blocking the agent from entering on Tuesday morning.

Ecuador’s foreign ministry said it lodged a formal diplomatic protest with the United States after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent attempted to enter the country’s consulate in Minneapolis without permission on Tuesday morning.

Employees of the consulate stopped the agent from entering, the Ecuadorean foreign ministry said in a statement Tuesday night. Under the Vienna Conventions, to which the United States is a party, foreign consular buildings are off-limits to law enforcement from the host country without authorization from consular officials.

The incident comes amid an aggressive federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota that has prompted an outpouring of anger in the state and across the country.

Video footage verified by The New York Times shows a member of staff rushing to an entrance to the consulate, where an agent appears to have opened the door. The employee can be heard saying, “This is the Ecuadorean consulate, you’re not allowed to enter.” The agent responds by saying, “If you touch me, I’ll grab you.”

The consulate, in Northeast Minneapolis, has a clearly marked facade emblazoned with Ecuador’s national seal. » | Max Bearak and Ali Watkins | Wednesday, January 28, 2026

Budapest Mayor Charged over His Calls for People to Defy Hungary’s Pride Ban

THE GUARDIAN: Gergely Karácsony urged people to take to streets in June in pushback against Orbán government’s attack on rights

Prosecutors in Hungary have filed charges against the progressive mayor of Budapest, seeking to fine him months after hundreds of thousands of people heeded his call to take to the streets in defiance of the government’s ban on Pride.

The June march made headlines around the world after the ruling Fidesz party, led by the rightwing populist prime minister, Viktor Orbán, backed legislation that created a legal basis for Pride to be banned, citing a widely criticised need to protect children.

The legislation, believed to be the first of its kind in the EU’s recent history, led Hungarian police to ban Budapest Pride. Soon after, however, the city’s mayor, Gergely Karácsony, declared it to be a municipal event in an attempt to circumvent official authorisation. » | Ashifa Kassam, European community affairs correspondent | Wednesday, January 28, 2026

The Brutal Fate of Homosexuals during Nazi Germany

Aug 17, 2024 | WARNING: This documentary is under an educational and historical context, We do NOT tolerate or promote hatred towards any group of people, we do NOT promote violence. We condemn these events so that they do not happen again. NEVER AGAIN. All photos have been censored according to YouTube's advertiser policies.

Explore the harrowing history of homosexuals during Nazi Germany in this eye-opening video, detailing the persecution, resilience, and untold stories of LGBTQ+ individuals under the Third Reich. Beginning in 1933, when Adolf Hitler rose to power, the Nazi regime intensified its efforts to eradicate homosexuality, which they deemed incompatible with their vision of a racially pure and morally strict society. This dark chapter in history saw the enforcement of Paragraph 175, a law criminalizing homosexual acts, which led to the arrest and conviction of approximately 100,000 men. The video delves into the infamous raids of gay clubs and bars in Berlin, once a haven for LGBTQ+ individuals during the liberal Weimar Republic. Names like Magnus Hirschfeld, a pioneering sexologist and gay rights advocate, emerge as tragic figures whose work was destroyed in the notorious book burnings of 1933. Hirschfeld's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft was ransacked, and his extensive research on sexuality was lost forever.

Viewers will learn about the brutal conditions in concentration camps like Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald, where an estimated 5,000 to 15,000 homosexual men were imprisoned. The pink triangle, a symbol of shame and stigma, was forcibly worn by these men, marking them for severe mistreatment, forced labor, and often, death. Heart-wrenching personal accounts, like that of Pierre Seel, a Frenchman deported to Schirmeck-Vorbruck concentration camp, highlight the human cost of this persecution. Seel's later memoirs provide a rare, firsthand account of the horrors faced by gay men during this period.

The video also touches on the post-war period, revealing how the suffering of homosexuals was largely ignored or forgotten. Unlike other victims of the Holocaust, gay men were not immediately liberated but often re-imprisoned under the same Paragraph 175. It wasn't until 1969 that homosexuality was decriminalized in East Germany, and 1994 in reunified Germany.

This video is a crucial reminder of the resilience and courage of those who suffered under Nazi tyranny. It underscores the importance of remembering and honouring their stories to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated. Join us as we uncover the forgotten history of homosexuals during Nazi Germany, shedding light on a dark past to educate and inspire future generations.

Die bequeme These

The Trump Murders - From Minnesota to the Caribbean: Allegations of Extrajudicial Killings

Jan 28, 2026 | Under the authority of the Trump regime, U.S. forces carried out a series of lethal operations that critics say crossed a dangerous legal and moral line. This video breaks down allegations of extrajudicial killings linked to Trump-era policies — from U.S. airstrikes on small boats in the Caribbean, to opaque bombing campaigns in Nigeria and Venezuela, to fatal encounters between federal agents and civilians in Minnesota. At the center of the controversy is an expansive claim of presidential authority: that the president can unilaterally order killings without charges, trials, or transparent oversight. Families of victims, including the relatives of two Trinidadian fishermen killed in a U.S. strike, are now suing the U.S. government — arguing these deaths were unlawful and violated both U.S. and international law.

ANTHONY DAVIS can be supported on Patreon here.

Chief Justice John Roberts must surely shoulder the blame with Donald Trump for these extrajudicial killings, for it was he who granted Donald Trump broad immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken whilst in office. In the ‘Trump v. United States (2024)’ case, Trump was granted absolute immunity from prosecution for many core functions. Indeed so much immunity from prosecution was granted to Trump (and future presidents) that many critics have argued that the decision has placed Trump above the law.

It is to be hoped that John Roberts can now see the folly of his actions and rues the day he made those stupid decisions. But I wouldn’t bet on it. — © Mark Alexander

US dollar Sinks to Its Lowest Level in Four Years

THE GUARDIAN: Dollar drops against basket of currencies after Donald Trump brushed off concerns over slide

The US dollar has fallen to its lowest level in four years after Donald Trump brushed off concerns over the currency’s fall, sending investors fleeing to traditional havens including gold and the Swiss franc.

The dollar dropped by 1.3% against a basket of currencies after the president’s comments on Tuesday, marking its fourth day of declines, then slipped by a further 0.2% on Wednesday morning.

“No, I think it’s great,” Trump said of the weaker dollar, during a visit to Iowa to promote his record on the economy. Asked whether he was concerned about the currency’s slide, he told reporters: “I think the value of the dollar – look at the business we’re doing. The dollar’s doing great.”

The greenback has tumbled by 10% over the past year, while Tuesday’s fall was the largest one-day drop since last April, when Trump announced his sweeping tariff plans, marking a global market sell-off.

The dollar has now touched its lowest level since February 2022, after unpredictable US policymaking, including Trump’s recent threats to take over Greenland and impose further tariffs on European allies, unleashed fresh geopolitical shocks. » | Joanna Partridge | Wednesday, January 28, 2026

If America must go on suffering under Trump’s voodoo economics, it could well soon be on life-support! I have said it before, and I will say it again: Trump doesn’t understand even the basics of macro-economics. Egocentric, megalomaniacal, rapacious businessmen usually don’t. Especially businessmen skilled and talented enough to be able to bankrupt FIVE, arguably even SIX, casinos! For Americans, the future looks bleak. — © Mark Alexander

Mexico’s President Says Cancellation of Oil Shipment to Cuba Is ‘Sovereign’ Decision

THE GUARDIAN: Claudia Sheinbaum denied move was response to pressure from the US, after Trump said ‘zero’ oil would go to Cuba

Mexico has cancelled a shipment of oil to Cuba, the country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, appeared to confirm on Tuesday, but she insisted the decision was “sovereign” and not the response to pressure from the US.

Fuel shortages are causing increasingly severe blackouts in Cuba, and Mexico has been the island’s biggest oil supplier since the US blocked shipments from Venezuela last month.

On Monday, Bloomberg reported that Pemex, Mexico’s state oil company, had “backtracked” on plans to send a much-needed delivery to Cuba this month.

Asked whether she denied the report in her daily press conference, Sheinbaum said: “It is a sovereign decision and it is made in the moment when necessary.” » | Thomas Graham in Tijuana | Tuesday, January 27, 2026
