Yemeni Student is Among Thousands to Win US Visa, Only to Have It Effectively Denied by Travel Ban

Thousands of Yemenis and other nationals from countries covered by Trump’s travel ban are currently stranded in different parts of the world as the State Department refuses to honor the fact that they won a U.S. government immigration lottery. Many of the winners have already sold their homes and cars, left their jobs and even relocated in anticipation of their move to the United States. Their eligibility to receive green cards under the program will end only three days after the travel ban is slated to expire on September 27, meaning their applications will likely not be processed in time, which lawyers say operates as an effective ban. We are joined by Hamed Sufyan Almaqrami, 29-year-old Yemeni Ph.D. student in applied linguistics who was awarded a diversity visa in 2016. Due to Trump’s travel ban, he is now stranded in India. We also speak with his attorney, Yolanda Rondon of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, and Stephen Pattison, a U.S. immigration attorney who spent nearly three decades with the State Department.

North Korea Ups the Ante: "The US Should Stop Making Threats"

There's considerable concern in many parts of the world as North Korea and the United States appear engaged in the highest-stakes game of chicken possible, one where the ultimate threat is nuclear war. Donald Trump threatened "fire and fury" - Pyongyang has now published details of exactly how it would shoot missiles towards the American Pacific island territory of Guam.

Why Is the US Threatening War with North Korea Instead of Pushing for Negotiations?

The war of words between the U.S. and North Korea continues to intensify, with North Korea threatening to strike the U.S. territory of Guam, while Defense Secretary General Mattis warned North Korea’s actions could result in the "destruction of its people." This came after Trump vowed to strike at North Korea with "fire and fury." Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council recently imposed a new round of sanctions against North Korea over its test launches of two intercontinental ballistic missiles last month. We speak with journalist Tim Shorrock, who recently returned from South Korea.

North Korea Promises US Territory of Guam Strike Plan in Days - BBC News

North Korea says a plan that could see it fire four missiles near the US territory of Guam will be ready in a matter of days. State media said Hwasong-12 rockets would pass over Japan and land in the sea about 30km (17 miles) from Guam, if the plan was approved by Kim Jong-un.

It denounced Donald Trump's warnings of "fire and fury" and said the US leader was "bereft of reason".

The US has warned the North its actions could mean the "end of its regime". US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said Pyongyang would be "grossly overmatched" in any war against the US and its allies.

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, who is in Guam, says there is a sense that the North Korean threat is rhetorical, as most people feel that if they really did strike with missiles it would be suicidal for the North Korean regime.

Blackwater Founder Erik Prince Urges Trump to Privatize Afghan War & Install Viceroy to Run Nation

The White House is considering an unprecedented plan to privatize the war in Afghanistan at the urging of Erik Prince, founder of the now-defunct private mercenary firm Blackwater. Prince told USA Today the plan would include sending 5,500 private mercenaries to Afghanistan to advise the Afghan army. It would also include deploying a private air force—with at least 90 aircraft—to carry out the bombing campaign against Taliban insurgents. The plan’s consideration comes as a federal appeals court has overturned the prison sentences of former Blackwater contractors who were involved in a 2007 massacre in Nisoor Square in central Baghdad, killing 17 civilians when they opened fire with machine guns and threw grenades into the crowded public space. For more, we speak with longtime investigative journalist and activist Allan Nairn.

"Gay and Muslim in America" - Al Jazeera - Edward Wyckoff Williams Reports (2014)

This special report explores the unique challenges facing openly gay, American Muslims—and the double consciousness that comes from being a dual minority.

Our subjects both speak of wanting gay Muslims to galvanize around a progressive agenda that will challenge both their faith community and American neighbors and friends — to see Muslim Americans in their totality: diverse, multi-cultural and multi-contextual.

North Korea Threat after Trump Vows ‘Fire and Fury’ | FT World

Tillerson: North Korean Leader Didn't Understand Diplomatic Language - BBC News

North Korea has said it is considering carrying out missile strikes on the US Pacific territory of Guam.

The North's official news agency said on Tuesday the plan involved firing medium-to-long-range rockets at Guam, where US strategic bombers are based.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, flying into Guam, said there was no imminent threat from North Korea. He also defended President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury". Mr Tillerson said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un did not understand diplomatic language, and a strong message was needed that he would understand. "I think the president just wanted to be clear to the North Korean regime that the US... will defend itself and its allies," he said.

The exchanges mark a sharp rise in rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang, but China has urged calm.

Al Jazeera World - Islamophobia in the USA

"Islamophobia in USA" is an investigation by Aljazeera Arabic correspondent Abdullah Elshamy into who and what's behind the rise of anti-Islamic feeling in the US – what they think, how they operate and where their funding comes from.

The 11th September attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 was a watershed moment in America's relationship with the Arab world. Amid the grief and US military response that followed, American fear of the threat of international terrorism grew.

George W Bush's so-called 'crusade' against what he labelled the 'axis of evil' fueled suspicion of the Middle East as a whole and as US military action increased and led to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, this fear turned into one of Arabs generally and Muslims in particular.

With the rise of ISIL and the way the mainstream American media reports on it, fear of Islam further increased, tending to demonise Muslims and portray them and their faith as dangerous and violent. Donald Trump is a textbook fascist and we will see whether or not that translates into fascist policies.

Hank Johnson, Democratic Congressman of Georgia Elshamy's investigation uncovers a network of Islamophobic writers, campaigners, funders and politicians who combined to bring about the conditions in which Donald Trump would be elected President in November 2016.

Can the US and Russia De-escalate Rising Tensions? - Inside Story

It was all-out verbal warfare this week as the United States imposed fresh sanctions on Russia.

US President Donald Trump reluctantly approved the new measure, saying the US would side with its allies and friends against Russian subversion and destabilisation. He added that considered the sanctions bill seriously flawed, and he said he was only signing it for the sake of national unity.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev responded by saying the sanctions end hopes for improving Russia's relations with the new US administration. He said Trump had been "fully outwitted" and his administration had "shown its total weakness by handing over executive power to Congress in the most humiliating way."

Trump then tweeted that the US relationship with Russia was at "an all-time and very dangerous low". "You can thank Congress", Trump said.

As the crisis between the two countries deepens, what's behind this latest escalation?

Why There Is No Way Back for Religion in the West | David Voas | TEDx | UniversityofEssex

Religion is in decline across the Western world. Whether measured by belonging, believing, participation in services, or how important it is felt to be, religion is losing ground. Society is being transformed, and the momentum appears to be unstoppable.

You might be asking yourself two questions. Is it actually true? And even if religion is currently losing ground, could things change in the future?

David is a quantitative social scientist with a background in demography. He serves on the executive committee of the European Values Study and is co-director of British Religion in Numbers (www.brin.ac.uk), an online centre for British data on religion that has received recognition as a British Academy Research Project. He serves on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Sociology and the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.
