Ghulam Kehar rose before dawn in early June to attend the day’s first prayer at his local mosque in Irving, Texas, before heading off for a monthslong deployment with the U.S. Coast Guard.
He had been deployed before, but this time was different. He felt apprehensive about leaving his wife and four children behind in Texas, even for a short while.
Rhetorical attacks on Muslims by top Texas leaders had become more pronounced, and seemed to be trickling down. At his mosque, the Valley Ranch Islamic Center, and others across the state, congregants and religious leaders swapped stories of ugly comments directed at them while praying in public or sitting in public parks.
In recent months, a man was arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat at a major new Islamic center in Houston. Not far away, in Conroe, a woman told Muslim shoppers at a grocery store they were “not welcome in this state or this country” — after losing her job, she received nearly $250,000 from supporters after video of her comments circulated widely. In McKinney, a Dallas suburb, a woman grabbed a former mayor and stuffed paper with an anti-Muslim message down his shirt during a heated City Council hearing over a mosque expansion. » | J. And almost 11 months after the Gaza ceasefire deal was signed, the Strip is still a tent city amongst the rubble, caught between Trump’s impatience and Benjamin Netanyahu’s need for political survival.

Trump Lashes Out at Oman as the Preliminary Deal with Iran Expires.
THE NEW YORK TIMES: As a crumbling truce with Iran officially collapsed on Monday, President Trump signaled his frustration at his inability to resolve a war that he started but cannot seem to end.
In an interview with Fox News, the president lashed out at an American ally, Oman, that has been trying to mediate negotiations with Iran.
“If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them,” Mr. Trump said in a phone interview, according to Fox News’s Trey Yingst.
The latest threat toward Oman, which has facilitated talks between the United States and Iran for years and maintains that it is still a neutral mediator, came as Mr. Trump found himself without much leverage to reach the goals he set out at the start of the war.

Four paintings by the Renaissance master Antonello da Messina were stolen from a museum in Messina, Sicily, on Saturday, Italian officials said.
Taking advantage of an annual religious celebration that brings tens of thousands to Messina’s streets, thieves made off with three of five panels that constitute the Polyptych of San Gregorio as well as a small double-sided devotional painting. They are the only works by Antonello da Messina, commonly called Antonello, that remained in his native city.
The celebration, the Procession of the Vara, is a religious ritual that takes places every Aug. 15. Some 100,000 people attended the celebration and the city’s law enforcement officials were focused on maintaining order there, city officials said. “Coinciding with la Vara, it was certainly a planned theft,” Mayor Federico Basile said in a telephone interview.
Commissioned in the 15th century for the church of San Gregorio, which was destroyed during a devastating earthquake in 1908, the San Gregorio altarpiece originally consisted of six panels. Is Britain Really Giving Up on Alcohol?
August 16, 2026 | Britain’s enthusiastic — and occasionally problematic — relationship with alcohol is well-documented. It was Britain, after all, that invented the pub and the pint.
However, recent data has shown that the average Briton consumed 10.2 alcoholic drinks per week last year. Although that may sound high, it is actually the lowest since records began in 1990.
Those in midlife and older people are by far the biggest drinkers these days, as younger people turn to running clubs and non-alcoholic alternatives.
The Sunday Times’s Daniel Woolfson looks at why Britain’s relationship with alcohol could be on the rocks.

Aug 15, 2026 | Hundreds of people have lined the streets in Mumbles to pay tribute to Bonnie Tyler as her hearse is driven to her home.
The Total Eclipse of the Heart singer, born Gaynor Hopkins, died in a Portuguese hospital on July 8 at the age of 75. On Saturday, members of the public lined Newton Road in Mumbles as the cortège travelled from William Pressdee Funeral Care in Mumbles, returning to her home in Llwynderw.
Some fans had travelled from as far as the US to watch the procession pass through the Mumbles.
A celebration of Bonnie's life, for family and friends, will take place at Swansea Minster on Monday, before the singer makes a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.

Reports in legacy and social media have suggested that the wedding of Angus Lowe to Yasmin Mezran took place last week. She is the daughter of Karim Mezran, a Libyan academic and senior fellow at the Washington, DC-based Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.
Social media posts also suggested that the wedding ceremony offered halal options for guests, which also surprised social media users, as Lowe had made numerous "pledges" to end halal slaughter in the UK, as part of his anti-Muslim campaign.
A repost on X by Karim Mezran, whose account is verified on the social networking site, also seemingly confirmed that his daughter's wedding to Lowe's son took place.

In a right-wing media meltdown earlier this year, it emerged the introduction of the episode truncated a series of things Trump said at his speech to the "Stop the Steal" rally on January 6 2021, shortly before his followers tried to storm the US Capitol Building to prevent the lawful certification of his election loss to Joe Biden.
The BBC has acknowledged the programme may have led viewers to believe Trump said the sentences one after the other, which he did not. But Congress and US courts have ruled repeatedly that Trump did use the speech to inspire his followers to march on the Capital, in what became the bloodiest insurrection in modern American history.

Donald Trump has threatened to declare the strait of Hormuz as “a territory of the United States” as his administration struggles to conclude the war with Iran.
During a speech at a police academy on Long Island, New York, on Friday, the US president said he would “pretty soon” designate the waterway – a crucial chokepoint for global trade, through which about a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil supplies typically pass – a US territory.
The comment came as peace talks with Iran remain at an impasse following failed negotiations, with Tehran refusing to reopen the strait, which has been all but closed since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran in February.
Almost six months into the war, there is little indication that negotiations will soon yield peace, as Iranian officials continue to defy Trump’s demands. The US has been blockading Iranian shipping and ports in recent months in an effort to pile economic pressure on Tehran.
“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said on Friday. “Essentially, that’s what it is. We have the blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to.”
