Decision Expected This Month: Pope Likely To Allow Breakaway SSPX to Rejoin Church

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Pope Benedict XVI is expected to allow the Society of St. Pius X, an ultraconservative, controversial splinter group, back into the Catholic Church in an agreement likely to be taken before the end of May, SPIEGEL has learned. But Holocaust denier Richard Williamson, an SSPX bishop, opposes an agreement.

Pope Benedict XVI may reach a decision by the end of May to allow the ultraconservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) to rejoin the Catholic church, SPIEGEL has learned.

At a meeting this coming Wednesday, the four cardinals of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, which oversees Catholic Church doctrine, plan to agree a proposal for reuniting the society with the Catholic Church, and will it submit it to the pope.

Richard Williamson 'Unrepentant' Over Holocaust Denial
THE TELEGRAPH: Richard Williamson, the Catholic Bishop soon to face trial in Germany on charges of denying the Holocaust, is apparently unrepentant, allegedly telling colleagues recently it was a "huge lie" that six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis.

The notorious English bishop also allegedly told colleagues from his ultraconservative brotherhood that "a completely new world order" had been built on the "fact" that Jews were systematically gassed in concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Treblinka and Sobibor.

Jews, he added, had become "ersatz saviours thanks to the concentration camps," according to a report in German news magazine Der Spiegel.

"The fact is that the six million people who were supposedly gassed represent a huge lie," it is claimed he wrote to fellow members of the Society of St. Pius X.

In a separate email, he is said to have written that "1.3 million deported people" were not gassed in the Treblinka, Majdanek, Belzec and Sobibor concentration camps as historians claim, but were rather transported to the Soviet Union.

Benoît XVI s'est expliqué dans une lettre aux évêques sur sa décision de lever l'excommunication des prélats intégristes dont un négationniste, a annoncé le Vatican mercredi, précisant que cette lettre serait rendue publique jeudi.

Selon des extraits publiés mercredi par un vaticaniste italien qui affirme en avoir eu connaissance, le pape confie avoir été blessé par les vives réactions suscitées par cette mesure.

Le Vatican, après avoir dans un premier temps refusé de confirmer l'existence de la lettre, a annoncé qu'elle serait publiée jeudi à 12H00 (11H00 GMT).

Les extraits publiés par le vaticaniste Andrea Tornielli sur son blog "sacri palazzi" montrent un pape blessé par la "véhémence" de la polémique qu'a provoquée la levée controversée de l'excommunication des quatre évêques lefebvristes tandis que, selon le Vatican, Benoît XVI ignorait les déclarations négationnistes de l'évêque Richard Williamson.

L'affaire "a suscité à l'intérieur et hors de l'Eglise catholique une discussion d'une véhémence que l'on n'avait pas connue depuis longtemps", aurait reconnu le pape.

"J'ai été attristé par le fait que même des catholiques, qui au fond auraient pu mieux savoir comment sont les choses, ont pensé devoir me frapper avec une hostilité prête à l'attaque", aurait-il écrit.

THE TELEGRAPH: Richard Williams, the British bishop whose denial of key facts of the Holocaust provoked a crisis in the Catholic Church, will arrive in London on Wednesday after being expelled from Argentina.

Bishop Williamson, of the ultra-conservative breakaway Catholic group the Society of St Pius X, was dressed all in black, including sunglasses and a black cap, as he made his way through Ezeiza international airport in Buenos Aires to board a British Airways flight.

A man accompanying him manhandled a journalist who asked Bishop Williamson his destination and whether he would recant his views.

He refused to answer questions about his departure, which followed a decision last week by the Argentine government that his immigration papers were not in order and he should leave the country within ten days.

An interview in which the bishop questioned the scale of the Holocaust and the use of gas chambers was broadcast in the week the Pope cancelled his excommunication, sparking fury among Jewish groups.

The government of Argentina, where he had served as head of a seminary near Buenos Aires for the last six years, said that his comments "profoundly insult Argentine society, the Jewish people and humanity in general".

The British-born bishop is a member of the ultra-conservative Catholic group founded by the late Archbishop Lefebvre.

Father Richard Bouchacourt, the head of the Society of St Pius X in South America, told the Telegraph that he hoped that the scandal and attention it had attracted would now be over.

Comment analysez-vous la décision de Benoît XVI de lever l'excommunication de quatre évêques du courant intégriste de Mgr Lefebvre, dont l'un, Richard Williamson, est un négationniste affirmé?

Je n'ai pas été surpris. Dès 1977, dans un entretien à un journal italien, Mgr Lefebvre indique que "des cardinaux soutiennent (son) courant" et que "le nouveau cardinal Ratzinger a promis d'intervenir auprès du pape pour (leur) trouver une solution". Cela montre que cette affaire n'est ni un problème nouveau ni une surprise. Benoît XVI a toujours beaucoup parlé avec ces personnes. Aujourd'hui, il lève leur excommunication, car il juge que le temps est venu. Il a pensé qu'il pourrait trouver une formule pour réintégrer les schismatiques, qui, tout en conservant leurs convictions, pourraient donner l'apparence qu'ils sont en accord avec le concile Vatican II. Il s'est bien trompé.

Comment expliquez-vous que le pape n'ait pas mesuré le tollé que sa décision allait susciter, au-delà même des propos négationnistes de Richard Williamson?

La levée des excommunications n'a pas été un défaut de communication ou de tactique, mais elle a constitué une erreur de gouvernement du Vatican. Même si le pape n'avait pas connaissance des propos négationnistes de Mgr Williamson et même s'il n'est pas lui-même antisémite, chacun sait que les quatre évêques en question sont antisémites. Dans cette affaire, le problème fondamental, c'est l'opposition à Vatican II, et notamment le refus d'une relation nouvelle au judaïsme. Un pape allemand aurait dû considérer cela comme un point central et se montrer sans ambiguïté sur l'Holocauste. Il n'a pas mesuré le danger. Contrairement à la chancelière Angela Merkel, qui a vivement réagi.

Benoît XVI a toujours vécu dans un milieu ecclésiastique. Il a très peu voyagé. Il est resté enfermé au Vatican - qui est comme le Kremlin d'autrefois -, où il est préservé des critiques. Du coup, il n'a pas été capable de réaliser l'impact d'une telle décision dans le monde. Le secrétaire d'Etat, Tarcisio Bertone, qui pourrait être un contre-pouvoir, était son subordonné à la Congrégation pour la doctrine de la foi ; c'est un homme de doctrine, absolument soumis à Benoît XVI. On est face à un problème de structure. Il n'y aucun élément démocratique dans ce système, aucune correction. LE MONDE: Il a mis les milieux catholiques en émoi et indigné le reste du monde ; il a obligé le pape à assurer les juifs de sa "solidarité totale". Il vient de se voir démis de ses fonctions à la tête du séminaire intégriste de la Reja en Argentine, qu'il dirigeait depuis quelques années. Mais dans la tempête, Richard Williamson fait mine de rien et, le 7 février, date de la dernière chronique parue sur son blog (dinoscopus.blogspot.com), il disserte, en mélomane, de la beauté de la troisième symphonie de Beethoven.

En assurant au cours d'un entretien télévisé que "pas un juif n'avait péri dans les chambres à gaz", cet évêque britannique de 68 ans, membre de la Fraternité sacerdotale Saint-Pie-X, le courant schismatique de Mgr Lefebvre, a acquis en quelques heures une notoriété mondiale. Sa bombe négationniste, lancée au moment même où le pape annonçait la levée de l'excommunication qui le frappait, ainsi que trois de ses confrères, depuis vingt ans, a installé le personnage dans son rôle de " type incontrôlable".

"C'est un fanatique qui passe son temps à dire des conneries", veut croire un prêtre français, bon connaisseur du milieu intégriste. Ancien professeur de littérature et de philosophie, Mgr Williamson est surtout connu pour être, parmi les héritiers de Mgr Lefebvre, l'un des tenants de la ligne la plus dure à l'égard du Vatican. Vatican Controversy Spreads to the Netherlands
NRC HANDELSBLAD: The controversial rehabilitation of a Holocaust-denying bishop by pope Benedict XVI is arousing strong reactions in the Netherlands. A theologist is leaving the church and the minister of foreign affairs is getting involved.

Roman Catholic bishop Ad van Luyn of Rotterdam has said that the pope's decision to rehabilitate renegade British bishop Richard Williamson is "disastrous". Speaking on public television, Van Luyn said that Williamson's denial of the Holocaust and its gas chambers are "shocking, totally a-historic, and at odds with the second Vatican Council [the 1962-65 church reform - see below*]". Williamson has claimed that the Nazis did not kill six million Jews, but 300,000 at most.

Following his opposition to modernising the Roman Catholic church, bishop Williamson was excommunicated in 1988, together with three other traditionalist bishops who had turned against reforms. The pope reinstated the four conservatives last week, as part of his stated ambition to reunite all forms of Christian worship under the umbrella of Rome.

A professor of theology and ethics at the Roman Catholic Radboud University in Nijmegen is leaving the church over the issue. Professor Jean-Pierre Wils told Radio Netherlands Worldwide, "For many years it has been known that Williamson and the other three traditionalists are anti-Semites. The pope must have known about this. Only now are people beginning to see what is really happening in the Vatican. People were idolising the pope over the past few years without asking themselves what his political ambitions were. These are political actions, it's not just a theological problem. The four bishops whose excommunications were remitted by pope Benedict XVI are Richard Williamson, Bernard Fellay, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, and Alfonso del Gallareta. They are the leaders of a schismatic society, the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) inspired by the late archbishop Marcel Lefebvre of Switzerland. Lefebvre, who died in 1991, founded the SSPX in 1970. It is named after pope Pius X, who firmly opposed modernism in the church.

The society rejects the Second Vatican Council of 1962-1965 which decided, among other things, that neither today's Jews nor the Jews of the time of Christ were all responsible for the death of Christ. The council also revised the liturgy, lifting some of the restrictions of the traditional Latin mass. Finally, the council aimed for pan-Christian unity (ecumenism) without requiring the conversion of non-Catholic Christians.

Traditionalists view the changes ordained by the Second Vatican Council as contrary to the interests of the church, and want to roll them back.

Priest in Italy Defends Holocaust-denier
ASSOCIATED PRESS: ROME — A priest in an ultraconservative society recently rehabilitated by Pope Benedict XVI has defended a bishop in his group and joined him in expressing doubts about the Holocaust.

While making more cautious remarks than Bishop Richard Williamson, the Rev. Floriano Abrahamowicz echoed, in an interview published Thursday by an Italian daily, the prelate's doubts that Jews were gassed during World War II.

"I know gas chambers existed at least to disinfect, I can't say if anybody was killed in them or not," Abrahamowicz told La Tribuna di Treviso, a newspaper in northern Italy.

Contacted by phone in Treviso, Abrahamowicz said the report of his interview was accurate, but declined to elaborate.

Benedict lifted Williamson's excommunication and those of three other members of the Society of St. Pius X last week as part of his efforts to bring the group, which opposes many of the liberalizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council, back into the church.

Williamson's superiors at the society have distanced themselves from his comments.

Asked for comment about Abrahamowicz' remarks, a Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Ciro Benedettini, noted that Benedict had warned Wednesday against any denial of the full horror of the Nazi genocide and had expressed his unquestioned solidarity with Jews.

Die Juden fühlen sich zutiefst verletzt, viele Deutschen schämen sich, dass es ein deutscher Papst war, der diesen schweren Fehltritt beging.

Alle Verteidigungen des Papstes, der für sich in Anspruch nimmt, unfehlbar in Glaubens- und Moralfragen zu sein, überzeugen nicht: Moralisch gesehen bedeutete seine Entscheidung eine unerträgliche Bagatellisierung unendlichen menschlichen Leides, das den Juden unter Hitler angetan wurde.

The Pope's decision to pardon a British bishop who denies the Holocaust has been criticised by a Government minister.

Sadiq Khan, a junior Communities Minister, said that he found the move to lift the excommunication of Richard Williamson "highly unsavoury" and of "great concern".

His spoke out during a Commons debate to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, in response to criticism of Pope Benedict's decision from MPs of all parties.

Mr Williamson, a member of the ultraconservative sect the Society of St Pius X, was automatically excommunicated 20 years ago after being appointed as a bishop by a breakaway archbishop without papal consent.

The Pope lifted his excommunication this week, along with three others who were also ordained without papal permission, even though he has repeatedly denied that Jews died in the gas chambers during the Second World War.

Last week, Swedish television screened an interview with Mr Williamson in which he said: "Historical evidence is hugely against six million Jews having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy by Adolf Hitler."

Mit diesen Worten hat der Sprecher der deutschen Bischofskonferenz, Matthias Kopp, den traditionalistischen Richard Williamson und damit indirekt eine Entscheidung seines höchsten Vorgesetzten, des Papstes, kritisiert. Williamson gehört zu den vier Anhängern des ultrakonservativen französischen Erzbischofs Marcel Lefebvre, deren Exkommunikation Papst Benedikt XVI. nach mehr als 20 Jahren aufgehoben hat.

Die Distanzierung der Bischofskonferenz und anderen katholischen Organisationen scheint besonders in Deutschland dringlich zu sein. Denn der antimodernistische Geistliche, den Lefebvre 1988 ohne päpstlichen Auftrag zum Bischof geweiht hatte, scheint sich zum neuen Star der rechtsextremen Szene zu entwickeln. Wie Recherchen von Spiegel Online auf einschlägigen Websites bestätigen, wird die Entscheidung des Papstes dort regelrecht bejubelt.

In einem Kommentar auf dem rechtsextremen Altermedia.info heisst es etwa: «Dass der Papst ein paar Tage nach dem Interview die Exkommunikation von Bischof Williamson (und den anderen betroffenen Bischöfen der Piusbruderschaft) aufhebt, ist doch schon fast eine Kampfansage an die Adresse des Judentums.». C’est à côté de Regensbourg, cette paroisse de la Bavière que Benoît XVI considère comme sa patrie, que l’évêque Richard Williamson a enregistré son interview niant l’holocauste et les chambres à gaz. Le prélat animait un séminaire de la fraternité Pie X. Il avait mis en garde ses interlocuteurs contre la diffusion de ses paroles qui risquaient «de lui coûter la prison». Le procureur de Regensbourg affirmait effectivement, en fin de semaine dernière, avoir ouvert une enquête contre lui.  

Le négationnisme en Allemagne est un crime et peut être puni de cinq ans de prison. Versöhnung als Affront: Papst unter heftiger Kritik
DIE PRESSE: Benedikt XVI. hat vier traditionalistische Bischöfe wieder in die katholische Kirche zurückgeholt und erntet dafür Kritik von Progressiven und Juden. Einer der vier Bischöfe soll den Holocaust leugnen.

Es sollte eine Geste der Versöhnung sein, ausgelöst hat sie eine Welle des Protests: Am Samstag gab der Vatikan bekannt, dass vier Bischöfe, die vor 21 Jahren exkommuniziert werden, wieder in die Kirche zurückgeholt werden. Die Anhänger des Erzbischofs Marcel Lefebvre waren ohne Genehmigung des Vatikan zu Bischöfen geweiht worden und haben nach dem Tod Lefebvres die traditionalistische Bruderschaft St. Pius X. (FSSPX) am Leben gehalten. Sie haben unter anderem Messen nach dem alten lateinischen Ritus gefordert und eine Öffnung der Kirche abgelehnt. Die Entscheidung von Papst Benedikt XVI. fällt genau 50 Jahre nach dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils, bei dem das Ende des Tridentinischen (lateinischen) Ritus beschlossen wurde.

Die Versöhnung mit den Traditionalisten ist gelungen, aber die Reaktionen ließen nicht auf sich warten: Von jüdischer Seite wird scharf kritisiert, dass einer der vier Bischöfe, der Brite Richard Williamson, während eines Deutschland-Aufenthalts in einem Interview mit dem schwedischen Fernsehen geäußert hat: "Ich denke, dass 200.000 bis 300.000 Juden in den Konzentrationslagern gestorben sind, aber nicht ein einziger von ihnen in Gaskammern". Da Holocaust-Leugnung in Deutschland ein Offizialdelikt ist, hat die Staatsanwaltschaft Regensburg am Freitag ein Ermittlungsverfahren wegen Volksverhetzung eingeleitet.

Auch die katholische Basisbewegung "Wir sind Kirche" kritisierte die Aufhebung der Exkommunikation als Zeichen für "die rückwärtsgewandte Ausrichtung des Pontifikats von Benedikt XVI.".Der Papst solle sich auch den Progressiven öffnen: "Wäre es nicht gerade jetzt an der Zeit, mit der zweiten Hand auch all jene heimzuholen, die mit Lehrverboten und Exkommunikation bestraft wurden, weil sie die gute Nachricht Jesu auch politisch-strukturell für die Armen dieser Welt einsetzen oder Frauen zu Priesterinnen weihen oder für Kondome zum Schutz vor Aids eintreten", fragt die Organisation, die in den 1990er Jahren Unterschriften von hunderttausenden österreichischen Katholiken für die Priesterschaft von Frauen und die Aufhebung des Zölibats gesammelt hat. >>> DiePresse.com | Sonntag, 25. Papst Benedikt XVI. hat die Exkommunikation von Richard Williamson aufgehoben. Der Holocaust-Leugner hatte erst am Mittwoch beteuert: "Ich glaube, dass es keine Gaskammern gegeben hat." Nicht nur Juden protestieren.

Ungeachtet jüdischer Proteste hat Papst Benedikt XVI. einen ehemaligen Bischof rehabilitiert, der den Holocaust leugnet. Wie der Vatikan am Samstag mitteilte, hob der Papst mit einem Dekret die Exkommunizierung von vier katholischen Bischöfen aus dem Jahr 1988 auf, die ohne Zustimmung des Vatikans geweiht worden waren.

Unter ihnen ist auch der Brite Richard Williamson, der wiederholt das volle Ausmaß des Völkermords an den Juden während des Nationalsozialismus leugnete. Pope Reinstates Four Excommunicated Bishops
THE NEW YORK TIMES: VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI, reaching out to the far-right of the Roman Catholic Church, revoked the excommunications of four schismatic bishops on Saturday, including one whose comments denying the Holocaust have provoked outrage.

The decision provided fresh fuel for critics who charge that Benedict’s four-year-old papacy has increasingly moved in line with traditionalists who are hostile to the sweeping reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s that sought to create a more modern and open church.

A theologian who has grappled with the church’s diminished status in a secular world, Benedict has sought to foster a more ardent, if smaller, church over one with looser faith.

But while the revocation may heal one internal rift, it may also open a broader wound, alienating the church’s more liberal adherents and jeoparding 50 years of Vatican efforts to ease tensions with Jewish groups.

Among the men reinstated Saturday was Richard Williamson, a British-born cleric who in an interview last week said he did not believe that six million Jews died in the Nazi gas chambers. He has also given interviews saying that the United States government staged the Sept. 11 attacks as a pretext to invade Afghanistan.

The four reinstated men are members of the Society of St. Pius X, which was founded by a French archbishop, Marcel Lefebvre, in 1970 as a protest against the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council, also called Vatican II. Archbishop Lefebvre made the men bishops in unsanctioned consecrations in Switzerland in 1988, prompting the immediate excommunication of all five by Pope John Paul II.

Later that year, Benedict, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, sought to regularize the church’s relationship with the society. And as pope, he has made reinstating the Lefebvrists an important personal cause.

Indeed, even though the Society has given no public signs that it would reverse its rejection of Vatican II, one Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity on Saturday because talks were continuing, said that the Vatican was willing to discuss making the group a personal prelature. Pope John Paul II did the same with another conservative group, Opus Dei.

In a public statement Saturday, the Vatican said that the pope would reconsider whether to formally affirm the four men as full bishops, but it referred to the men by that title. It said talks would seek to resolve the “open questions” in the church’s relationship with the society.

In recent years, Benedict has made other concessions to the followers of Archbishop Lefebvre, who died in 1991. Pope Could Welcome Holocaust Denier Back into the Fold
TIMES ONLINE: The Pope is preparing to cancel the excommunication of four traditionalist Catholic bishops including one who believes the Holocaust never happened and the gas chambers were a myth.

Pope Benedict XVI has already signed the decree lifting the excommunication of the four bishops of the ultra-conservative Society of St Pius X, according to well-sourced reports in the Italian press today.
