Lula Wins Brazil’s Presidency, in Stunning Blow to Latin America’s Right

THE NEW YORK TIMES: President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva triumphed over Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of the right-wing leader he defeated four years ago.

Brazilian voters on Sunday handed the leftist president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a fourth term in office and a surprise victory over Flávio Bolsonaro, his right-wing challenger, in a striking rebuke to a conservative surge sweeping Latin America.

Mr. Bolsonaro refused to accept the outcome and said it was the result of foul play, increasing the risk of unrest over the election result.

The rejection by voters of Mr. Bolsonaro, the son of a former president jailed for attempting a coup four years ago, is also a loss for President Trump, who had embraced the Bolsonaro family and the region’s rising right.

Mr. Lula, in contrast to many world leaders, has often and defiantly clashed with Mr. Trump, and his victory suggests that Latin America’s left-wing forces still wield influence despite a string of losses across the hemisphere. This is the first leftist victory following seven straight wins by right-wing leaders in the region over the last 18 months.

“I would like to thank the Brazilian people for the generosity they have shown me for a long time,” Mr. Lula said, during a victory speech in São Paulo, flanked by his wife, running mate and allies. » | Ana Ionova and Adam B. The CLOSETocracy

Premiered Oct 22, 2026 | Bombshell documentary features first-hand accounts from three men alleging paid sexual encounters with the late senator, Lindsey Graham, and examines the contrast between his alleged private conduct and public opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.

The CLOSETocracy is an investigative short documentary produced by Swamp Watch Studios and Tystnaden Films. TYT is an exclusive distribution partner.

This documentary needs to be watched by those who wish to be informed about what goes on in politics today, especially because it shows clearly the HYPOCRACY of many western politicians, more especially when it comes to gay rights and matters of homosexuality.

This particular documentary is about the late Lindsey Graham, but I feel sure that he would not have been alone in politics in hiding his sexual proclivities. There must be very many closeted gay politicians in Congress who vote against gay rights.

Because this short documentary could offend those who are hypersensitive or who are a tad prudish, I have decided not to embed this documentary on this website. Instead, I have decided to provide you with a link for you to be able to watch the short documentary on YouTube itself.

Be warned: This is no documentary for the narrow-minded or the easily offended. Furthermore, it is not suitable viewing for minors, either. It is, however, a very interesting documentary. Essential viewing for those who care about the quality of political leadership both in America and the rest of the West.

“Musk”: Alex Gibney on New Film, Legal Threats & Elon Musk Spending $366M to Help GOP in Midterms

Oct 13, 2026 | We speak with the Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney about his new documentary Musk, an expansive, nearly four-hour examination of the world’s first trillionaire and how he has amassed unprecedented power in business, technology and politics. The film traces Elon Musk’s early ventures and the rise of SpaceX and Tesla, examining the role of government support in their growth. It also explores his acquisition of Twitter, now X; his alliance with President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement; and his role in the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, whose cuts devastated federal programs, including USAID.

Gibney says Musk has carefully crafted an image of a “polymath” who can solve the world’s most pressing problems, but that he is really “kind of a ruthless businessman” willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, including “a series of elaborate cons” to win government support for his companies.

How Cocaine Conquered the UK: In pubs, Festivals and Workplaces the Drug Has Become an Everyday Habit

THE GUARDIAN: Previously considered a middle-class drug, price drops have made cocaine more widely available, and created a new set of problems

Lisa* is watching Scissor Sisters at a festival in the Lake District, a can of cider in hand, dancing along to the music on a sunny afternoon.

The 30-year-old has a few days off from her job as a veterinary nurse in Gateshead, where she lives with her fiance. She loves going to festivals, especially as “I love meeting new people,” she says.

She is confident and makes friends at the festival very easily. The reason for that? “I’m on a bit of coke,” she says.

It is a crime largely hidden in plain sight – and one many people would barely consider a crime. However, it could land her a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, though for a first offence it is more likely to be a police caution. But she’s unlikely to be caught, especially at a festival, where over the course of the weekend numerous people admit to the Guardian to taking cocaine – or trying to get hold of it – and are seen openly taking it.

By many estimates, use of the class A drug is soaring. Wastewater analysis suggests people in England consumed 123,000kg of cocaine in 2024-25, a rise of 26% since 2021. That’s equivalent to roughly 2.5bn lines of cocaine, at an estimated street value of almost £10bn.

Cocaine and crime

Cocaine is a powerful and addictive stimulant that causes euphoria, overconfidence, restlessness and paranoia. A Guardian investigation has found a 10% rise in recorded crimes where the drug was mentioned since 2019.

Research from wastewater samples in 2022 carried out by Imperial College London and released earlier this year found that cocaine use spiked during major sporting and music events, heatwaves and bank holidays.

Its reputation as a middle-class drug still stands, though it has become more available across different demographics, as prices have dropped year-on-year and reached “historically low levels” last year. That wider use brings wider problems. » | Robyn Vinter | Sunday, October 25, 2026

What a fine kettle of fish! What a state our politicians have reduced our country to! Our political leaders are incompetent and stupid. So often, they are bereft of all common sense and sound judgment! For years, they have waged an unrelenting war on cigarettes and smoking, and have been raising the price of cigarettes out of all proportion while drug use has been increasing. How ridiculous! How stupid!

I have said time and time and time again that the war on smoking is WRONG! Informing people of the health dangers of smoking is one thing, and encouraging people not to smoke is understandable, and even encouraging smokers to quit where and when possible is sensible. But hounding smokers, depriving them of ALL their RIGHTS to enjoy a smoke ANYWHERE in the PUBLIC SPACE is both FOOLISH and DANGEROUS.

Anybody who has just a modicum of understanding of human psychology, human behaviour, anyone who understands what motivates and drives humans to behave in a certain way would know ONE BASIC FACT: After a hard day’s work, after toiling, after the stress of earning a crust, people like to derive some pleasure from life, and each person has his/her own way of deriving that relaxation and pleasure. People are not ROBOTS!

In years gone by, when people were more sensible, they’d enjoy a drink and maybe a smoke. But as smoking has been all but OUTLAWED, it is now more than clear that people have been turning to recreational drugs instead. They have not given up smoking for a life of abstinence and optimum health; rather, they have adopted new habits which are altogether far, far more injurious to people’s health than smoking cigarettes ever was or could be. It should be remembered that cocaine is a mind-bending substance. A bent mind is capable of many nasty and dangerous things.

Largely, I blame politicians for this sad development. Self-evidently, they are far more highly paid than they are sensible or accomplished lawmakers!

Furthermore, so much for Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer’s nonsensical and unworkable generational smoking ban! Those incompetent politicians should hang their heads in shame! — © Mark Alexander

Ten Days That Could Shake the World: Democratic Norms At Stake in Four Pivotal Elections

THE GUARDIAN: Brazil, Israel, Serbia and the US are holding elections within the space of 10 days. Will the authoritarian right cement its global gains, or can pro-democracy forces make a comeback?

Four elections on four continents within 10 days could profoundly reshape global politics, propelling the world further along its current authoritarian trajectory or marking a limited comeback for democratic norms.

In all four contests, basic democratic norms are at stake at a time when autocracy is advancing worldwide at an alarming rate. According to the Sweden-based V-Dem Institute, which uses multivariable assessment tools, the democratic freedoms enjoyed by the average global citizen are down to levels last seen in 1978 – long before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Europe.

The cluster of four pivotal elections could either halt that trend or reinforce it. In each contest, pro-democracy parties are in close races with current or aspiring autocrats. The outcomes in each case are likely to have spillover effects in their regions and beyond. » | Julian Borger senior international correspondent | Sunday, October 25, 2026

Signs Suggest Thomas Markle Sr May Be ‘Sex Offender of the Grossest Kind’, Says Philippine Minister

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Forensic analysis of found images continues as Meghan’s father denies possessing child sexual abuse images

Thomas Markle Sr, pictured in an ITV interview in 2018, has denied possessing child sexual abuse images. Photograph: Reuters

All signs point to Thomas Markle Sr being a “possible sex offender of the grossest kind” although a full forensic investigation will give a “definitive picture”, the Philippine interior minister has told the Guardian.

Authorities in the south-east Asian country are analysing digital images allegedly belonging to the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex that were said to have been found at his former home in Cebu. Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, reported to authorities last week that he had apparently discovered a stash of child sexual abuse images.

“In these cases where family disputes are mixed up, we have to consider all the angles,” said Jonvic Remulla, the interior minister. “Right now all signs point to a possible sex offender of the grossest kind. We want to be sure before we release the findings. The forensics data will be complete in a week.” » | Oliver Holmes | Sunday, October 25, 2026

» | Par Adrien Bez (Paris), Justin Boche (Lyon) Simon Cherner (Nantes), Nicolas Farmine (Marseille), Martin Hézode (Paris), Clara Hidalgo, Jacques Paugam (Nice), Simon Pierre (Bordeaux) | Publié : samedi 24 octobre 2026. Stalin Wasn’t So Bad, Was He?

Sept 12, 2026 | More than 70 years after his death, Joseph Stalin is making a remarkable comeback in Putin’s Russia. Across the country, new monuments are being erected, while Soviet-era memorials are being restored and put back on display. At the same time, public opinion polls show growing approval of the dictator who ruled the Soviet Union through fear, repression, and terror.

During Stalin's rule, millions of people were imprisoned, deported or executed. Yet today, he is increasingly portrayed not as a tyrant but as a strong leader who transformed the Soviet Union into a global superpower and led it to victory in World War II.

Why is Stalin being rehabilitated in today's Russia? And what does his return to public life reveal about the Kremlin's view of history, power and national identity?

Berlin, 1933: Hitler’s Rise Through the Eyes of Diplomats I Pure WW2 | Reupload

On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. Within weeks, the Nazi regime began transforming the state from within. While the world watched with curiosity and uncertainty, foreign diplomats stationed in Berlin witnessed the rise of National Socialism firsthand. Through private reports, personal notebooks and confidential communications, these diplomats tried to understand the rapidly changing political landscape. They observed how the Nazis seized control of institutions while carefully navigating elite social circles that still included aristocrats and influential figures.High-society receptions became strange stages where Nazi leaders such as Hermann Göring, Rudolf Diels and Ernst Hanfstaengel mingled with diplomats and journalists. Behind the elegance of Berlin’s salons, however, the signs of persecution and dictatorship were already emerging.
