John Kerry: Violence in Egypt Is 'Deplorable'
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: John Kerry, the US secretary of state, has condemned the violence in Egypt as "deplorable" – but refused to say whether America would take steps to pressure the military into halting its onslaught.
As the death toll climbed to at least 149, Mr Kerry made an unexpected appearance at a routine State Department briefing to address the spiralling crisis.
"The United States strongly condemns today's violence and bloodshed across Egypt," Mr Kerry said.
"It's a serious blow to reconciliation and the Egyptian people's hopes for a transition towards democracy and inclusion."
Mr Kerry called for restraint on all sides, but said the military and the interim government it installed in July had a "unique responsibility to prevent further violence".
The US strongly opposed a return to the government-declared state of emergency, he said, which would grant the security forces widespread powers to round up supporters of the ousted president Mohamed Morsi. » | Raf Sanchez, Washington | Wednesday, August 14, 2013

How CERN’s Grid May Place the Power of the World’s Computers in Your Hands
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The combined power of the world’s computers could soon be placed in the palm of your hand thanks to technology that is partly being developed at the home of the Large Hadron Collider.
Scientists at CERN in Switzerland and in the US have been developing a new kind of computer system that is already being described as the successor to the World Wide Web.
Known as the Worldwide Grid, it would give users access to the computing power of all the machines connected to a network no matter where they are in the world.
The technology could turn desktop computers into supercomputers and is now being adapted to allow mobile devices such as phones and tablets to connect.
Physicists at CERN already have access to the world’s biggest Grid computing network, combining more than 200,000 computers together.
It allows them to analyse more than 26 million gigabytes of data produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) each year. » | Richard Gray, Science Correspondent | Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Vietnam Offers Free Courses in Marxism and Ho Chi Minh Studies
BBC: Vietnam is to waive university fees for philosophy students who agree to take courses in Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh ideology, in a bid to boost the uptake of unpopular courses.
PM Nguyen Tan Dung has signed a decree stipulating the fee exemption.
It will also apply to medical students who want to focus on TB, leprosy, mental illnesses and surgical sciences.
In addition traditional Vietnamese drama and opera students will get a reduction in their fees.
In recent years, the number of students who want to study "communist sciences" has dwindled sharply even though Vietnam takes pride in its Marxist heritage.
Pham Tan Ha, head of admission and training at the Social and Human Sciences University in Ho Chi Minh City, told local media that his university had been struggling to attract new students to study philosophy, including Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh ideology. » | Nga Pham, BBC News, Bangkok | Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Egypt Declares National Emergency
BBC: Egypt's presidency has declared a state of emergency after scores of people were killed when security forces stormed protest camps in Cairo.
The camps had been occupied by supporters of former president Mohammed Morsi, who was deposed in early July.
Security forces say 95 people have been killed, but the Muslim Brotherhood says hundreds have died.
The state of emergency will begin at 16:00 local time (1400 GMT), and last for a month.
Shortly after dawn on Wednesday morning, armoured bulldozers moved deep into the main protest camp outside the eastern Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque.
Officials say the other protest camp, at Nahda Square, has now been cleared.
Graphic accounts of bloodshed emerged from the protest camps as reporters described wounded protesters being treated next to the dead in makeshift field hospitals. (+ video) » | Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Growth in Germany and France Ends Euro Recession
THE INDEPENDENT: 17 countries that use euro saw collective economic output grow by 0.3 per cent
Germany and France finally powered the eurozone out of its longest-ever recession between April and June, official figures showed today.
The stronger-than-expected 0.3% growth ends six-successive quarters of economic contraction for the single-currency bloc and also heralds better news for the UK’s exporters, which send around 40% of their goods to European markets.
The recovery was led by the eurozone’s two biggest economies as powerhouse Germany managed 0.7% growth and France cheered markets with an unexpectedly strong 0.5% bounce-back from a mild recession of its own. This was France’s strongest advance for two years. » | Russell Lynch | Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Bahrain Warns Protesters They Will Be Met With Force
Bahrain's government has vowed to forcefully confront demonstrators who are planning to take to the streets on Wednesday, to demand political change after the failed "Pearl revolution" near the start of the Arab spring, in 2011.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the prime minister, issued the warning as democracy activists reported intensifying security measures, arrests and intimidation designed to forestall new protests.
"The government will forcefully confront suspect calls to violate law and order and those who stand behind them through decisive measures," the official Bahrain news agency quoted him as saying.
Emergency decrees have banned demonstrations in Manama, the capital, and imposed other new restrictions on dissent and freedom of expression. » | Ian Black, Middle East editor | Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Australian Election: Tony Abbott in Fresh Sexism Row
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Tony Abbott, Australia's opposition leader, has added to long-running concerns about his attitudes towards women after he described a young female candidate as "feisty" with "a bit of sex appeal".
Standing alongside his daughter - who appeared to wince - Mr Abbott made his remarks in response to a query about the local Liberal party candidate, Fiona Scott, and her predecessor, Jackie Kelly.
"They're young, they're feisty, I think I can probably say have a bit of sex appeal, and they are just very very connected to the local area," he said.

Only in California! California Passes Law Giving Rights to Transgender Children in Schools
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Pupils in California schools who identify as transgender will be free to choose which lavatories they use and whether they want to play on sports teams for boys or girls, under a new state law.
All 6.2 million state-school pupils aged between five and 18 are to have the right “to participate in sex-segregated programmes, activities and facilities” based on their self-perception rather than birth gender.
The law, which is the first of its kind to be passed by any American state, was hailed as a milestone by a coalition group of quality campaigners after it was signed by Governor Jerry Brown.
“This is a powerful affirmation of basic human dignity, and puts California at the forefront of leadership on transgender rights,” said John Perez, the Speaker of the California Assembly. » | Jon Swaine, New York | Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Islam Conquering Higher European Education
GATESTONE INSTITUTE: Critics say that such efforts to create a "European Islam" are naïve and misguided, and will serve only to contribute to the "mainstreaming" of a religious and political ideology that is intrinsically opposed to all aspects of the European way of life.
The Catholic University of Leuven, the oldest university in Belgium and one that has been a major contributor to the development of Roman Catholic theology for more than 500 years, will offer a degree in Islamic theology beginning in 2014.
The decision by KU Leuven, as the university is commonly known, to focus on Islam follows similar moves by other leading universities in Europe and reflects the growing influence of Islam on the continent.
The proliferation of degree programs in Islamic theology is being justified by European governments -- which are subsidizing the teaching of Islam in European universities with taxpayer money -- as a way to "professionalize" the training of Muslim imams, or religious teachers, many of whom do not even speak the language of their European host countries.
Some European governments believe that by controlling the religious education of imams, they can promote the establishment of a "European Islam," one that combines Islamic principles and duties with European values and traditions such as the rule of law, democracy, human rights and gender equality.
But critics say such efforts to create a "European Islam" are naïve and misguided, and will serve only to contribute to the "mainstreaming" of a religious and political ideology that is intrinsically opposed to all aspects of the European way of life.
The KU Leuven degree in Islamic theology will be offered within the department of World Religions, Interreligious Dialogue and Religious Studies (WIDR). The program is intended only for those who already have a bachelor's degree, a requirement that would appear to eliminate the chances for admission for a vast majority of the imams in Belgium and elsewhere in Europe. » | Soeren Kern | Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Religious People Are Less Intelligent Than Atheists, Analysis of Over 63 Scientific Studies Stretching Back over Decades Concludes
A new review of 63 scientific studies stretching back over decades has concluded that religious people are less intelligent than non-believers.
A piece of University of Rochester analysis, led by Professor Miron Zuckerman, found “a reliable negative relation between intelligence and religiosity” in 53 out of 63 studies.
According to the study entitled, 'The Relation Between Intelligence and Religiosity: A Meta-Analysis and Some Proposed Explanations', published in the 'Personality and Social Psychology Review', even during early years the more intelligent a child is the more likely it would be to turn away from religion.
In old age above average intelligence people are less likely to believe, the researchers also found. » | Rob Williams | Monday, August 12, 2013

Muslim Leader Denounces 'Islamophobic' France as Air Force Sergeant Accused of Planning Mosque Attack
THE INDEPENDENT: 23-year-old arrested over plot, as violent incidents rise
A Muslim religious leader has denounced France’s “climate of Islamophobia” after an air force sergeant with alleged links to the extreme right was placed under investigation for attempting to carry out a terrorist attack against a mosque near Lyon.
The 23-year-old, who was arrested at a military base last week, has been placed under investigation on charges including possessing a weapon with terrorist intent.
Islamophobic attacks have risen by between 35 and 50 per cent in France this year according to data from Muslim associations. The country is home to five million Muslims.
The French interior ministry said the sergeant is believed to be “close to the radical far right” and had allegedly planned to open fire on the mosque at Vénissieux in the Bordeaux region on Thursday last week, when Muslims celebrated the end of Ramadan. A rally was held outside the Vénissieux mosque yesterday to encourage solidarity with the local Muslim community. » | Anne Penketh | Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Oprah Winfrey 'Sorry' for Naming Switzerland in Race Row
BBC: US talk show host Oprah Winfrey has said she is sorry for a "blown up" media response after she claimed she encountered racism in an upmarket handbag store in Zurich.
Speaking on the red carpet premiere for her new film, The Butler, Winfrey said: "I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland."

Muslim Staff Escape NHS Hygiene Rule
Female staff who follow the Islamic faith will be allowed to cover their arms to preserve their modesty despite earlier guidance that all staff should be "bare below the elbow".
The Department of Health has also relaxed rules prohibiting jewellery so that Sikh members of staff can wear bangles linked with their faith, providing they are pushed up the arm while the medic treats a patient.
The Mail on Sunday reported the change had been made after female Muslims objected to being required to expose their arm below the elbow under guidance introduced by Alan Johnson when he was health secretary in 2007.
The rules were drawn up to reduce the number of patients who were falling ill, and even dying, from superbugs such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile.
Revised guidance which relaxed the requirements for some religions was published last month. » | Sunday, August 11, 2013

Sochi Olympics: Russia Says No Discrimination for Gay Athletes
Such concerns were "completely unfounded", the interior ministry said, quoted by Interfax news agency.
Olympic committee chief Jacques Rogge recently asked Russia to clarify how the law might affect the Sochi games.
The law prescribes fines for providing information on homosexuality to minors.
Critics say its loose interpretation effectively hinders any kind of public gay rights event in Russia.
The ministry said that officials would act during the games - as at any other time - to protect children "from the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations".
But it added that there would be no issue with "people who adhere to non-traditional sexual orientation but do not engage in these activities, nor stage any provocations, and take part peacefully in Olympic events together with everyone else".
The ministry said concerns over discrimination towards gay athletes at the games were "completely unfounded and unsubstantiated". » | Monday, August 12, 2013

Gay Men in Iran's Military Can Seek Exemption
Military service is mandatory for men and lasts two years. All healthy and able male high school graduates or drop-outs are mandated to serve in the military if they do not succeed in the University Entrance Exam. If they succeed and continue their education, they serve once they graduate.
During the eight years of the Iran-Iraq war, a number of more affluent families would go above and beyond to find ways around the military service; be it through bribery, undergoing attempts to be smuggled out of the country, inventing false pretenses of illness, or many other ways people created to escape the military service, attempting to fit in as exceptions so they could be excused.
The Iran-Iraq war ended 25 years ago, and since then, serving in the military has been accompanied by low risk and very little danger. Yet, most people are quite reluctant to serve the 24 months. Many families consider the two-year period a waste of time, while a less sizable group believes it to be a good learning experience for young men preparing to enter the real world.
The document — a card which is issued upon completion of a citizen’s two-year service — is golden: Without that card, an Iranian man cannot officially buy or sell anything, cannot participate in formal public sector activities, nor can he be employed by the government, or qualify to obtain a passport. Some companies in the private sector tend to refrain from recruiting men who have not served.
Gay men who prefer to refrain from serving in the military must undergo the required medical and mental evaluations prior to commencing the two-year experience. Should the examining officers or physicians come across any evidence of “queerness,” they refer the soldier-to-be to appropriate officials for further evaluation.
If the psychological diagnosis confirms the individual’s homosexuality, an official, permanent exemption is issued for him. More often than not, a thorough rectal exam follows the mental evaluation. The physician’s observations providing proof of occurred same-sex intercourse is then written formally and submitted to the military. In some cases, further detail-oriented exams come into play, so the decision-makers can be certain of the applicant’s “queerness," making sure they are genuine, not a false pretense to escape the service. » | Mehrnaz Samimi for Al-Monitor Iran Pulse | Sunday, August 11, 2013

Indian Clerics Tell Muslim Girls Not to Post 'Selfies' on Facebook
Two leading helplines for young Muslims seeking guidance have warned teenagers that in Islam the only men who should see their faces are close relatives and their husbands.
Their edict will be difficult to enforce within India's growing ranks of middle class Muslims among whom social networking is as popular as it is in the West.
Sunni and Shia clerics have warned them, however, that true relationships and friendships cannot be made over the internet and that it is wrong for girls to project their charms online. » | Dean Nelson, South Asia editor | Monday, August 12, 2013

Obituary: HRH Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau
In the summer of 2003 Prince Friso announced his engagement to Mabel Wisse Smit, a beautiful and intelligent blonde who was known for her work in the promotion of human rights. Soon afterwards, however, it was claimed that, 15 years earlier, she had been in a relationship with a Dutch mobster and international drug dealer called Klaas Bruinsma.
The claim was made by one of Bruinsma’s former bodyguards, who said that his boss and Mabel had been lovers — and that she had been the only woman allowed on board Bruinsma’s yacht. Miss Smit strenuously denied the allegations, saying that she had been merely an acquaintance of Bruinsma; she admitted that she had spent the night on his yacht on several occasions, but denied that there had been a sexual relationship, insisting that she had known him for only a few months and broke off contact after she found out how he made his money. They had, she said, shared a passion for sailing.
Miss Smit had been an expert on the Balkans at the UN, and promoted the cause of human rights for the Open Society Institute, funded by George Soros. She had been vetted by the Dutch secret service and approved as a suitable bride.
Shortly after becoming engaged, however, she issued a statement saying that she had known Bruinsma — who was shot dead in a gangland killing in 1991 — for a few months while she was a student, but had broken with him when she learned of “the practices he engaged in”. » | The Daily Telegraph | Monday, August 12, 2013

Unhealthy Lifestyles Will See British Children Die Before Their Parents
The unhealthy lifestyles of today’s children could see them die younger than their parents because of heart disease, diabetes and other medical conditions, a new study has shown.
In a “wake-up call” to parents, schools and the Government, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has worked with the University of Oxford to publish its first ever supplement dedicated solely to coronary heart disease statistics and causes among children and young people.
The study has found that with around 30 per cent of that group being overweight or obese, less than one in five children in the UK eating their five a day, and a minority doing recommended levels of daily exercise, the 50-year trend of reducing cardiovascular disease is set to be reversed.
BHF chief executive Simon Gillespie said: “These figures are a warning that many of our children are in grave danger of developing coronary heart disease in the future if they continue to live the same lifestyle.” » | Adam Withnall | Monday, August 12, 2013

Dutch Prince Johan Friso Dies After Skiing Accident Coma
THE GUARDIAN: The prince – once second in line to the throne – had been in a coma since February 2012, following fall in Lech, Austrla
Dutch prince Johan Friso, who went into a coma following a skiing accident in February 2012, has died, the government said on Monday.
"Prince Friso died from complications that arose as a consequence of the brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation following his skiing accident," the government said in a statement.
The prince, 44, was skiing off-piste in Lech, Austria, when he was buried in an avalanche. Rescuers pulled him from the snow, unconscious, 20 minutes later. He was resuscitated at the scene and flown to hospital, but remained in a coma for months.
Before the accident, Friso, the second of the former Queen Beatrix's three sons, had sometimes been known as "Prince Brilliant". He studied at UC Berkeley, the Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam, graduating from the Dutch universities cum laude, with degrees in engineering and economics. He later earned an MBA at France's prestigious INSEAD school of business. » | Agencies, Amsterdam | Monday, August 12, 2013

Zanzibar Acid Attack: Hardline Cleric Surrenders to Police
THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: A hardline Islamic cleric wanted for questioning over the Zanzibar acid attack on two British teenagers handed himself in on Sunday as police faced criticism for their slow-paced investigations.
Detectives believe Issa Ponda may have inspired the attack on Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, who remained in hospital being treated for their injuries last night.
Sheikh Ponda surrendered a day after he was injured during police attempts to arrest him on the orders of Tanzania's chief prosecutor.
He is under guard being treated in hospital and will be interrogated once doctors discharge him.
Miss Gee and Miss Trup, both 18 and from north London, were volunteering for at a Zanzibar nursery school when two men on a moped threw acid over them, wounding them on their faces, hands, legs, backs, necks and chests.
Both are said to be "devastated" by the extent of their injuries, which relatives fear will leave them with long-term physical and mental scars. » | Mike Pflanz, Stone Town, and Victoria Ward | Sunday, August 11, 2013
