Violence Erupts as Far-right and Anti-fascist Groups Clash in Dover
Far-right and anti-fascist groups have clashed in the centre of Dover.
The National Front, South East Alliance, North West Infidels and East Kent English Patriots are among the organisations involved in the anti-refugee protest on Saturday afternoon.
A large group of pro-immigration activists organised a counter-protest, where Labour Dianne Abbott MP has been speaking.

Why the Migration Fiasco Spells Doom for Project Europe
History offers up another of its ironies. The Soviet Union collapsed when great masses of people simply walked away from it. You may recall the blissful faces of those crowds who strolled peacefully into West Berlin, and then proceeded to tear down the wall which had imprisoned them for two generations. Now the European Union is about to collapse because great masses of people are walking into it: very little ecstasy this time, just lawless desperation. But by sheer numbers, their progression is as inexorable and politically destabilising as that miraculous exodus which brought down the great Communist empire without a shot being fired.
Forget the pantomime “negotiations” this weekend over an emergency brake – which can’t be used without prior universal agreement (rather like a fire alarm that can’t be activated without an international committee being convened), or the tortuous new wording of empty promises. That isn’t even a sideshow. It is deliberately deceptive nonsense. » | Janet Daley | Saturday, January 30, 2016

Anti-Islam Groups Launch Europe-wide Coalition Pledging to Defend 'Western Civilisation'
The British branch of the far-right PEGIDA movement will join colleagues from across the continent as part of the Fortress Europe coalition, which says it will "never surrender to our enemies" amid concerns about mass Muslim migration.
The new alliance brings together tens of thousands of campaigners from across Europe and has been announced in response to the escalating migrant crisis and alleged refugee sex attacks in Germany and Sweden.
It will feature veteran activists from all corners of Europe including Tommy Robinson - the former leader of the English Defence League (EDL) who is now leading PEGIDA UK.
The groups met near Prague last week to thrash out a common mission statement with eight bullet points in which the campaigners pledge to "risk our lives" to oppose "political Islam, extreme Islamic regimes and their European collaborators".
The movement is being spearheaded by campaigners from Germany, where PEGIDA was founded, and which has taken in more than one million refugees and migrants flooding into Europe from the Middle East, Asia and North Africa.
Criticism of Angela Merkel's open door migration policy has been growing amid fury over the Cologne refugee sex attacks and subsequent cover-up attempts by authorities. » | Nick Gutteridge | Thursday, January 28, 2016
Hollande-Rouhani Lunch Scrapped after Elysée Palace 'Refused to Remove Wine from Menu'
France, unlike Italy, has reportedly refused to take wine off the table for Iranian president Hassan Rouhani, meaning he will lunch alone during his historic trip to Paris – the first for an Iranian leader in 17 years.
As anger mounted in Rome on Wednesday over a decision to cover up nude statues with large white panels so as not to offend Mr Rouhani, the French have already made it clear that no such cultural concessions would be made regarding its cherished gastronomy.
In Rome, alcohol was not served at an official dinner held in Mr Rouhani’s honour – a standard Italian diplomatic gesture for visiting Muslim dignitaries.
But in Paris, an originally planned lunch at the Elysée Palace with François Hollande was dropped because the French refused to cede to the Iranian presidency's demand for halal meat to be served and for the wine to be left off the table, citing “republican traditions”.
Alcohol consumption is no laughing matter in Iran, whose culture ministry has just banned the word “wine” from books published in the Islamic Republic on the grounds that it amounts to the “cultural invasion” of the West. » | Henry Samuel, in Paris | Thursday, January 27, 2016

Wives with Benefits: Immigrants with More Than One Spouse Win Extra Payments under New Reforms
Polygamous marriages, which form a common thread in Islam, are recognised in Britain but only if they take place in countries where they are legal. Now a House of Commons library paper, published earlier this month, has highlighted a loophole that will allow additional wives coming to the UK to claim a full single person’s allowance while the husband and his first wife still receive their respective benefits. » | Simon Kent | Sunday, January 24, 2016
Isis Targeting Europe for Paris-style Attacks, Says EU Police Chief
Islamic State is actively focusing its attention on conducting large-scale attacks in Europe similar to those last year in Paris, the head of the EU’s law enforcement agency has said.
Rob Wainwright, the head of Europol, the Hague-based organisation that coordinates EU policing efforts over terrorism and organised crime, said Isis had “developed a new combat-style capability to carry out a campaign of large-scale terrorist attacks on a global stage, with a particular focus in Europe”.
His comments, at a meeting of interior ministers in Amsterdam, came as France’s interior minister said Islamist terrorists had planned to attack another concert in Paris and carry out a mass killing in the streets of the capital.
Bernard Cazeneuve was defending the government’s decision to maintain a state of emergency imposed after the shootings and bombings across Paris on 13 November, which left 130 people dead, including 89 at the Bataclan concert hall. Isis claimed responsibility.
Cazeneuve said that since last spring the country’s intelligence services had foiled 11 terrorist attacks, some of which had been ordered by the Islamic State attackers behind the Paris atrocities. » | Kim Willsher in Paris and Peter Walker | Monday, January 25, 2016

Stupid Cameron! Donald Trump Helps Extremists by Creating 'Clash of Civilisations,' Says David Cameron
Donald Trump is helping extremists by creating the idea of a "clash of civilisations between Islam and the West," David Cameron has said.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Cameron, in an unusual intervention in domestic US politics, said the Republican presidential candidate was “making a fundamental mistake" of trying to blame all Muslims for the ideology and actions of a few.
"I think that's wrong," he told the youth-focused American news website, Mic.
"In many ways, it actually helps the extremists, because they want to create a clash of civilisations between Islam and Christianity, or Islam and the West." » | Harriet Alexander, New York | Friday, January 22, 2016
My comment:
Since when has speaking the truth about Islam been the cause of problems? Do you really think, Mr Cameron, that denying the facts will make things better? If so, what an idiot you are! Donald Trump recognises the problem that Islam is, he recognises the problems it causes.
You say that what is going on is a perversion of the "great faith" of Islam. I would say, and I dare say that Donald Trump would say, that that is a load of BS. How can you possibly call a political ideology that is Islam a "great faith" when it the source of murder, mayhem, beheadings, stonings to death, amputations, clit-cutting, and so much else besides? You, Mr Cameron, are either stupid, or else you have taken leave of your senses.

Vicars Should Grow Beards to Reach Out to Muslims, Bishop Suggests
It brings together the most unlikely of bedfellows from Prince Harry to Gerry Adams and even – in many depictions – God himself.
Now the fashion for beards has been given the blessing of the Church of England, after one of the country’s most senior clerics praised vicars who grow them to appeal to Muslim communities around them.
The Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, singled out two East End priests who had cultivated bushy facial hair “of an opulence that would not have disgraced a Victorian sage”, for special praise.
More than simply a fashion choice, the move reflected a desire to “reach out” to the community in their Tower Hamlets parishes, a large proportion of whom are of Bangladeshi origin, he said.
It is, he added, an acknowledgement of the fact that in many Middle Eastern and Asian cultures the hirsute appearance is more associated with “holy men” than hipsters.
It is, he added, an acknowledgement of the fact that in many Middle Eastern and Asian cultures the hirsute appearance is more associated with “holy men” than hipsters.
The bishop, who sports what he describes as a “modest” beard dating from the late 1970s, made the observation in an article for the Church Times tracing the history of facial hair over the last 2,000 years of Christianity.
In Islam beards are viewed as an “adornment” and Muslim men are encouraged to wear them to honour the Prophet Mohammed. » | John Bingham, Religious Affairs Editor | Friday, January 22, 2016

Merkel's Last Stand? Chancellor Running Out of Time on Refugee Issue
SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Angela Merkel has repeatedly said that it will take time to solve the refugee crisis. But impatience is growing, particularly following the sexual assaults in Cologne. Voices of discontent are getting louder and the chancellor's hold on power may be weakening.
The most unusual tribunal in the republic meets around 25 times per year, usually on Tuesdays in the gray-panelled conference room on the third floor of the Reichstag where conservative parliamentarians often meet. At the front sits the defendant, German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Her accusers sit at the long rows of tables before her, the three or four dozen back benchers who are increasingly adopting the tone of a public prosecutor when addressing Merkel's refugee policies.
…
But then came New Year's Eve in Cologne, and since then everything has changed -- both in Merkel's party and across the country. The occasionally shrill debates in talk shows, on the Internet and on the streets have become even shriller. Among politicians in Berlin, calls for something to be done have grown both in number and volume. And within the population, where attitudes toward Merkel's policies have for months wavered between sympathy and skepticism, concerns are growing: Will the effort to integrate more than a million refugees overwhelm German society? Can the government still guarantee the safety of its citizens? Is the state failing?
…
But Merkel has failed to promptly impose order on the streams of refugees flowing into the country. Now, even her supporters are concerned that her plan for a European solution to the problem could fail. Former allies, such as the government of Sweden, have reintroduced tight border controls. Conservative German Constitutional Court justices such as Udo Di Fabio and Hans-Jürgen Papier have accused Merkel of making grave mistakes. And even a center-left paper like the New York Times, which for much of 2015 couldn't praise Merkel's refugee policies enough, recently published a column describing her course as a "high-minded folly." Inside Islamic State's New Stronghold in Libya: 'Isil Beheaded My Friend for Witchcraft - He Did Acupuncture'
Sitting in the shabby parlour of his temporary home, Haaji Mohammed can barely bring himself to watch the Isil video playing on his mobile phone. The film was made just last month – yet the horrific scenes it shows could be from 500 years ago.
Kneeling before a masked executioner are two men in orange jumpsuits, charged under a statute that drags even the medieval barbarity of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to new depths. The pair are accused of “sorcery”, and just as in witchcraft trials of old, justice is swift, brutal and dispensed to the sound of a baying mob.
As the executioner beheads them with a four-foot scimitar, a crowd of men and boys scream “Allahu Akhbar”, jostling each other for a closer look.
Mr Mohammed is less keen. “I know that man personally,” he says, pointing to the older of the two defendants, whom he names as Said Jabr. “He is not a witch, he is just an alternative healer who does homeopathy and acupuncture. He was wrongly accused.” » | Colin Freeman, Misrata | Monday, January 18, 2016

Netherlands: Violence Erupts at Mass Anti-immigration Demo over Refugee Centre
After police attempted to disperse an estimated 1000 protesters who had marched on the local town hall, violence erupted, with anti-immigration demonstrators letting off flares and fireworks, targetting law enforcement. Police have yet to release the number of those arrested and injured.
The protest was organised after town officials called a meeting on Monday over plans to accommodate some 500 refugees in the town, spread out over next ten years. The rally also followed a statement by populist far-right politician Geert Wilders of the Freedom Party (PVV) called for all Muslim male refugees to be locked up in asylum centres. Jailed Turkish Editor Slams EU Deal with Erdoğan's 'Fascist Government'
THE GUARDIAN: Can Dündar, held for his story alleging Turkey armed Islamist rebels in Syria, says EU is betraying its democratic values
The editor of Turkey’s most influential dissident newspaper has said in an interview from his prison cell that the country’s ongoing crackdown on journalists is the worst in its history and that he was imprisoned for doing his job.
Can Dündar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet, also said the EU was betraying its democratic values by seeking a rapprochement with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the hope that he would stem the flow of refugees into Europe while ignoring human rights violations.
“We always looked at the European Union as an anchor, a model to raise the standard of democracy in Turkey to universal levels, not as leverage to dictatorships,” he said. “Now, if the EU, in order to stop the influx of refugees by turning our lands into a big concentration camp, agrees to turn a blind eye while Erdoğan spurns democracy, human rights, freedom of press and rule of law, it means that the EU is discarding its founding principles in order to protect its short-term interests.” » | Kareem Shaheen in Beirut | Tuesday, January 19, 2016

David Cameron Backs Bans on Muslim Face Veils as Tories Plan Crackdown on Gender Segregation
Muslim women can be banned from wearing veils in schools, courts and other British institutions, David Cameron has said.
The Prime Minister said that he will give his backing to public authorities that put in place “proper and sensible” rules to ban women from wearing face veils in comments which will reignite debates.
It comes as the Government prepare to announce a series of measures designed to stop British Muslims becoming radicalised and traveling to the Middle East to join terrorist groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).
As part of the plans, ministers will pledge to outlaw gender segregation during meetings in public buildings amid concerns that some Muslim organisations are forcing women to sit separately. » | Peter Dominiczak, and Steven Swinford | Monday, January 18, 2016

Marco Rubio Bought Gun to Be 'Last Line of Defence between ISIL and My Family'
THE TELEGRAPH: Republican presidential candidate says he bought a gun on Christmas Eve in part to protect his family from Isil
Senator Marco Rubio has said he bought a gun on Christmas Eve because he is "the last line of defence between Isis [Isil] and my family".
The Republican presidential candidate said "millions of Americans" buy guns so they will be prepared to fend off attacks from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), or otherwise protect their families.
He suggested in an interview on Sunday that Isil had provided some of the impetus for his most recent gun purchase.
"I have a right to protect my family if someone were to come after us," he said on CBS' Face the Nation. 5 Reasons Germany’s Influence Is Fading
German Chancellor Angela Merkel currently lacks powerful partners to strike workable compromises on migration |
Germany’s sway over Europe is fading, for all its economic might and the honors heaped on Angela Merkel, and the evidence of its declining influence can be seen in the changing fortunes of the European People’s Party (EPP).
Usually, Christian Democrat leaders grouped in the EPP gather in Brussels a few hours before EU summits to make decisions they will foist on other European governments. At the last summit, however, they didn’t pre-cook the summit’s conclusions because the center right — and Germany itself — is losing influence.
Here are five reasons why: » | Florian Eder | Friday, January 15, 2016
Austria: Refugees Are No Longer Allowed to Drink in This Bad Ischl Bar
Austria Now Offers Sharia-compliant Bank Accounts
BAWAG PSK will launch the accounts in Vienna next month, allowing customers to conduct their banking according to Islamic law.
Sharia banking prohibits charging interest, as well as transactions with companies that invest in gambling, alcohol or pornography.
It also does not allow buying homes on interest. Instead, the bank purchases the house and resells it to the customer who pays in regular instalments.
Claudia Lemlihi, head of marketing, said that the bank would launch a new current account that instead of charging or paying interest would charge a fixed fee. She added that the account, named ‘Amana’, was tailored specifically to the needs of Muslims living in Austria. » | Nick Hallett | Friday, January 15, 2016

Anglican Church Avoids Split Over Gay Rights – But Liberals Pay Price
A permanent split in the worldwide Anglican communion over gay rights has been averted after archbishops overwhelmingly agreed to impose sanctions against the liberal US church and issue a statement in support of the “traditional doctrine” that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
The punitive measures and conservative statement were agreed on the penultimate day of a week long summit in Canterbury, which was aimed at moving beyond deep divisions over homosexuality between liberals and conservatives in the church that counts 85m people as its members.
An agreement, published on Thursday evening, said that the US Episcopal church had made changes to its definition of marriage that represented “a fundamental departure from the faith and teaching held by the majority of our provinces on the doctrine of marriage”.
In a passage which is likely to dismay liberal Anglicans, the agreement added: “The traditional doctrine of the church in view of the teaching of scripture, upholds marriage as between a man and a woman in faithful, lifelong union. The majority of those gathered reaffirm this teaching.” » | Harriet Sherwood, Religion correspondent | Thursday, January 14, 2016

Januar 2016

Chomsky Hits Back at Erdoğan, Accusing Him of Double Standards on Terrorism
THE GUARDIAN: US academic says Turkish president – who has condemned leftwing critics for ignorance – has been aiding Isis, which he blamed for bomb attack on Istanbul
The leftwing US academic Noam Chomsky has hit back at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after the Turkish president accused him of ignorance and sympathising with terrorists.
Hours after Tuesday’s bomb attack on a tourist area of Istanbul, Erdoğan delivered a sneering criticism of Chomsky and “so-called intellectuals” who had signed a letter calling on Turkey to lift its siege against Kurdish towns and cities in the south-east of the country.
He invited Chomsky to visit the area in a defiant televised speech to a conference of Turkish ambassadors in Ankara.
Chomsky has now rejected the invitation. In an email to the Guardian he said: “If I decide to go to Turkey, it will not be on his invitation, but as frequently before at the invitation of the many courageous dissidents, including Kurds who have been under severe attack for many years.”
Chomsky also claimed Erdoğan was operating double standards on terrorism. » | Matthew Weaver | Thursday, January 14, 2016

Close The Borders: Angela Merkel's Own Party Turn On Leader's ‘Open Door’ Refugee Policy
EXPRESS: GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel is facing another mutiny in her own party after politicians demanded Germany closed its borders to asylum seekers.
More than 40 politicians in Merkel’s Christian Democrat Party signed a petition to close its doors to refugees following the sex attacks in Cologne.
The chancellor has come under intense pressure to change her “open-door” policy after it was revealed asylum seekers were among suspects in the vicious New Year’s Eve attacks.
More than 650 women have now come forward to file criminal complaints over the attacks, around 45 per cent of them for sexual assault. » | Charlie Peat | Thursday, January 14, 2016
