Tory Councillor Suspended over Anti-gay Tweet

MAIL ONLINE: A senior Tory councillor is facing calls to be sacked after suggesting his party 'may as well legalise marriage with animals' because Prime Minister David Cameron supports gay marriage.

Conservative Party officials immediately took action against James Malliff, a cabinet member of Tory-controlled Wycombe District Council, Buckinghamshire, after he tweeted the remark to a former Tory MP.

Mr Malliff, who is in charge of big society and localism at the council, was immediately suspended by bosses for the ill-advised and 'completely unacceptable' Twitter post.

The London Evening Standard reported that Mr Malliff tweeted to former Conservative MP Paul Goodman, who had asked whether legalising gay marriage could lead to multiple Sharia marriages being made lawful.

Mr Malliff said: 'There is no doubt the PM is wrong on this issue. We may as well legalise marriage with animals, crude I concede but no apology.' 'Legalise gay marriage? Saudis Say Iran Must 'Pay the Price' for Alleged Plot as US Resists Retaliation

THE GUARDIAN: Tehran denies it was behind plot to kill Saudi ambassador and says US is using it to divert attention from problems at home

The Saudi Arabian government has issued a menacing warning to Iranthat it will have to "pay the price" for the alleged plot to hire a Mexican drugs cartel to assassinate its ambassador in Washington.

The threat from the Saudis came as the Obama administration resisted calls from within the US, mainly from the conservative right, to retaliate against Iran with military action.

But Iran denied it was behind the alleged plot, with officials claiming Washington had fabricated the story to divide Sunni Muslims – the dominant group in Saudi – and Shias, the dominant group in Iran. Tehran's leadership claimed Barack Obama was using the story to divert attention from the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

The foreign ministry summoned the Swiss ambassador, who handles US interests in the country, to condemn what it called "baseless claims" and warn "against the repetition of such politically motivated allegations."

A Saudi prince, Turki al-Faisal, a former ambassador to Washington and a former head of the Saudi intelligence service, told a conference in London: "The burden of proof and the amount of evidence in the case is overwhelming, and clearly shows official Iranian responsibility for this. This is unacceptable. Somebody in Iran will have to pay the price." » | Ewen MacAskill and Saeed Kamali Dehghan | Wednesday, October 12, 2011
US Elections 2012: Mitt Romney Cements Status as Republican Front-runner

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Mitt Romney advanced his status as the front-runner in the Republican primary field with a confident debating performance that led many in the party to conclude that the race to compete against President Barack Obama was now his to lose.

The former Massachusetts governor appeared calm and self-assured as he brushed off barbs from his seven rivals for the nomination and presented his credentials as a businessman with the executive experience to lead the economy out of difficulty.

Though he has yet to win many hearts among the grassroots supporters, he remains on top in the polls and the established apparatus of elected members, donors and commentators is beginning to coalesce around his campaign.

With less than three months before the first nominating contest in Iowa, his rivals are running out of time to dramatically alter the contest.

"He has the experience, organisation and money to compete beyond the early states where he is favoured," said Robert Bennett, a former Republican governor of Utah. "Big name endorsers and donors who have been waiting on the sidelines to see who will be the winner are now showing up in Romney's camp. The fact that the Obama campaign is bashing Romney at every opportunity shows that they also think he will be the nominee. Anything can still happen, but, at the moment, for Romney, the race is his to lose."

The Politico website declared: "Mitt Romney builds case for inevitability," while Jennifer Rubin in the Washington Post said: "Much can change between now and January, but unless other candidates change the dynamics of the race, Romney will slowly but surely move to lock up the nomination." » | Alex Spillius, Washington | Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Libya: Col Gaddafi's Son Mutassim 'Captured Trying to Flee Sirte'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The son of Col Muammar Gaddafi who had been leading the defence of the city of Sirte has been captured and is being held for questioning, according to officials in the country's interim government.

Three officials in the National Transitional Council (NTC) said Mutassim Gaddafi, the toppled leader's fifth son, was seized trying to flee the city on Tuesday hiding in a family car.

Mutassim, believed to be aged 34, who was national security adviser to his father, was then taken to Benghazi for questioning according to Col Abdullah Naker.

A powerful figure in the Gaddafi regime, he had been considered a rival to his brother Saif al-Islam in the competition to succeed his father.

Rebel brigades camped around the besieged city responded to the news by shooting streams of tracer fire into the night sky in celebration.

"If this news is true then definitely the fighting will be over in Sirte by tomorrow," said one fighter from Misurata's Lions of the Wadi brigade. » | Ben Farmer and Ruth Sherlock in Sirte | Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Hostility between Iran and Saudi Arabia Is Going to Get Worse

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The failed plot to kill Saudi Arabia's US ambassador will merely intensify the tension between the two Middle East nations.

An Iranian agent tries to recruit a Mexican drugs cartel to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in an American restaurant. “Nobody could make that up, right?” asked US secretary of state Hillary Clinton yesterday. But the FBI says it’s the latest blow in a Middle Eastern Cold War that has dragged on since 1979 between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Dangling above the states of the Persian Gulf, post-revolutionary Iran has long been the over-riding strategic threat for the sheikdoms and emirates in the region.

For years, Saudi Arabia led the conservative, pro-American camp in the Middle East against Colonel Nasser’s radical Egypt. That era ended when Egyptian ambitions dissolved in the defeat of 1967. When Egypt went on to sign an unpopular peace treaty with Israel in 1979, Cairo’s dreams of regional leadership faded. But that was also the year of a political earthquake: Iran’s revolution.

With its separate language and ethos, Iran had always sneered at the Arabs. Who were these uncultured nomads to talk down to one of the world’s oldest civilisations? Moreover, Iran is 90 per cent Shia, whereas the states of the Arab League are more than 80 per cent Sunni. The Saudi monarchy has reigned with the backing of the ultra-conservative Wahhabi religious establishment, which sees the ruling clerics of Iran as dangerous heretics.

If the Iranian government indeed ordered an assassination and bombing on American soil, it represents the escalation of a proxy war that has been unceasing for 30 years. Almost as soon as he assumed power, Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran’s revolution, declared that “the concept of monarchy totally contradicts Islam”. He similarly despised Saddam Hussein’s secular government in Iraq. Read on and comment » | Shashank Joshi | Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Pakistani Actress May Be Jailed Over Duty-free Wine

THE INDEPENDENT: A celebrated Pakistani actress turned television presenter and political campaigner faces a spell behind bars after customs seized two bottles of duty-free wine from her luggage.

In what her supporters claim is a politically motivated prosecution, police issued a warrant last night for the arrest of Atiqa Odho, 43. "What can I say?" Ms Odho told The Independent, apparently resigned to her fate. "The people have to decide now."

In one of the most bizarre instances of judicial activism, the ill-fated duty free purchase four months ago has seen Ms Odho dragged into the harsh glare of a local media that has long celebrated her as one of its most recognised faces, after the country's top judge sharply objected to her transgression after returning to Pakistan from the United Arab Emirates. Pakistan has been a dry country since the late 1970s, when alcohol was banned in a bow to rising religious opinion.

Outraged by the decision of the airport police to release her after a brief detention, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry resorted to discretionary powers. In Pakistan, the Supreme Court can take notice of perceived misconduct by acting "on its own initiative". Every Pakistani is now familiar with the Latin equivalent, suo moto, given the judge's taste for its use. » | Omar Waraich in Islamabad | Wednesday, October 12, 2011
Leveson Inquiry: David Cameron Condemned Over Media Regulation

THE INDEPENDENT: Senior media figures hit out at the Prime Minister today as they launched a robust defence of self-regulation.

Former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie launched a scathing criticism of David Cameron's "obsessive arse-kissing" of the Murdochs and slammed the "ludicrous" inquiry into media ethics and phone hacking.

His comments came after Associated Newspapers editor-in-chief Paul Dacre accused Mr Cameron of a "cynical act of political expediency" by declaring the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) was a "failed" body.

At the latest Leveson Inquiry seminar, editors united in their support of self-regulation.

Mr Mackenzie said: "The only reason we are all here is due to one man's action; Cameron's obsessive arse-kissing over the years of Rupert Murdoch."

Mr Mackenzie said Mr Cameron wanted Rupert Murdoch "onside at all costs".

He said "There was never a party, a breakfast, a lunch, a cuppa or a quiet word or drink that Cameron and Co would not turn up to in force if The Great Man or his handmaiden Rebekah Brooks was there.

"There was always a queue to kiss their rings. It was gut wrenching."

He said final proof the Prime Minister had "clearly gone quite potty" was his hiring of Andy Coulson as his director of communications, but the phone hacking scandal had prompted him to order: "Stop the arse kissing and start the arse kicking". » | PA | Wednesday, October 12, 2011
Royal Family: Cameron Begins Process to Allow First Born Daughters to Accede Throne

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: David Cameron has formally begun the process that could allow a first born daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to accede to the throne.

He has written to the prime ministers of Commonwealth countries outlining how he wants to change laws dating back centuries, but which are now discriminatory.

In the letter, Mr Cameron says it is “an anomaly” and goes against “gender equality” that women have to take their place behind younger royal males in the line of succession.

He writes: “In the UK, we have found it increasingly difficult to continue to justify two particular aspects of the present rules on the succession to the Crown.

“The first is the rule which says that an elder daughter should take a place in the line of succession behind a younger son. We espouse gender equality in all other aspects of life, and it is an anomaly that in the rules relating to the highest public office we continue to enshrine male superiority.”

Mr Cameron told MPs that he wants to change the rules. As well as ending male primogeniture, the Prime Minister hopes to open the way for members of the Royal Family who marry a Roman Catholic being able to succeed to the Crown. » | Andrew Porter, Political Editor | Wednesday, October 12, 2011

As Cameron is in favour of gay marriage, is he going to get legislation changed so that any gay children of a future monarch can also accede the throne? I mean, Cameron is changing every tradition in sight, so he might as well go the whole hog. This country is finished for anyway. The next thing we'll hear is that a prince has fallen for a Muslimahburqa-clad, of course – and the prince will have to embrace Islam before marriage. Will this mean, then, that the monarchy will cease to be a Christian monarchy at all? Is Cameron far-seeing enough, I wonder? – © Mark

Islamisten in Nord-Afrika: El-Kaida-Chef will die Scharia in Libyen

Occupy Wall Street Protests Come to London

THE GUARDIAN: The Occupy London Stock Exchange collective said a Facebook page on the protest had attracted more than 9,000 followers

Protests against the global financial system which have seen huge demonstrations in New York's Wall Street will spread to the City ofLondon this weekend.

Iran Calls Saudi Ambassador Assassination Allegations an 'Evil Plot'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Iran called US allegations of a plan to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington an "evil plot" by the United States, in a complaint sent to the United Nations.

Iran's US ambassador accused Israel of carrying out the murders of Iranian nuclear scientists with US support, in a letter sent to UN leader Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council.

"Iran categorically and in the strongest terms condemns this shameful allegation by the United States authorities and deplores it as a well-thought evil plot in line with their anti-Iranian policy," Mohammad Khazaee said in the letter.

US authorities said earlier they had uncovered a plot by the Iranian government to assassinate the Saudi envoy to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir. The US administration has vowed to hold Iran to account.

Two men have been charged with conspiring with Iranian government factions to stage the attack and one is in US custody.

Islam's War on the Cross: Egypt's Move to Democracy Under Threat after Latest Attack on Coptic Community

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Christians in Egypt are used to persecution, but this week's deadly attacks on a Copt demonstration threaten the country’s move from military rule to democracy.

In the 19 or so centuries since Christianity first took root in Egypt, the ritual of mourning has become an all-too-familiar experience for the majority of the country’s Coptic community. Egypt’s eight million Copts may claim to be their nation’s oldest surviving indigenous faith, but that has not spared them from prolonged periods of persecution, most recently at the hands of Islamist militants.

In many respects, the tone was set for nearly two millennia of oppression of the Copts, one of the world’s oldest Christian sects, by the martyrdom of St Mark the Evangelist, the disciple who established the Christian faith in Alexandria just a few years after the ascension of Christ.

The establishment of a new religion was bitterly resented by the city’s pagan population, who feared it would turn Alexandrians away from the worship of their traditional gods. They exacted their revenge on Easter Monday in 68 AD when Roman soldiers put a rope around St Mark’s neck and dragged him through the streets of Alexandria until he was dead.

These days the methods used to persecute Egypt’s Copts might not be so primitive, but their overall effect is no less barbaric. During the latest outbreak of Coptic-related violence in Cairo on Sunday night, several Copts are reported to have been crushed to death by the tracks of an armoured military vehicle that ploughed into a group of protesters as they sang hymns and held aloft the Cross. World Intrigued by "Occupy Wall Street" Movement

REUTERS.COM: Tahrir Square in Cairo, Green Square in Tripoli, Syntagma Square in Athens and now Zuccotti Park in New York -- popular anger against entrenching power elites is spreading around the world.

Many have been intrigued by the Occupy Wall Street movement against financial inequality that started in a New York park and expanded across America from Tampa, Florida, to Portland, Oregon, and from Los Angeles to Chicago.

Hundreds of activists gathered a month ago in the Manhattan park two blocks from Wall Street to vent their anger at what they see as the excesses of New York financiers, whom they blame for the economic crisis that has struck countless ordinary Americans and reverberated across the global economy.

In the U.S. movement, Arab nations see echoes of this year's Arab Spring uprisings. Spaniards and Italians see parallels with Indignados (indignant) activists, while voices in Tehran and Beijing with their own anti-American agendas have even said this could portend the meltdown of the United States.

Inspired by the momentum of the U.S. movement, which started small but is now part of U.S. political debate, activists in London will gather to protest outside the London Stock Exchange on October 15 on the same day that Spanish groups will mass on Madrid's Puerta del Sol square in solidarity.

"American people are more and more following the path chosen by people in the Arab world," Iran's student news agency ISNA quoted senior Revolutionary Guards officer Masoud Jazayeri as saying. "America's domineering government will face uprisings similar to those in Tunisia and Egypt."
Chinese newspapers splashed news about Occupy Wall Street with editorials blaming the U.S. political system and denouncing the Western media for playing down the protests.

"The future of America stands at a crossroads. Presuming that effective measures to relieve the social mood and reconstruct justice cannot be found, it is not impossible that the Occupy Wall Street movement might be the final straw under which America collapses," said a commentary in the Global Times.

"This movement has uncovered a scar on American society, an iceberg of accumulated social conflicts has risen to the surface," said the commentary in the tabloid, which is owned by the Communist Party mouthpiece, the People's Daily. » | Peter Millership | LONDON | Tuesday October 11, 2011

I'm Quitting the Tories for UKIP, Says Ex-Treasurer Lord Hesketh after He Loses Faith in the Party

MAIL ONLINE: A former Tory treasurer has defected from the Conservatives to the UK Independence Party over David Cameron’s handling of Europe.

Lord Hesketh says he lost faith in the party after the Prime Minister reneged on his promise to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, the former Conservative fundraiser said he would now devote his efforts to drumming up funds for UKIP.

Before the general election, Mr Cameron gave a ‘cast iron’ pledge to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

However the treaty was ratified before he came to power and he said there would be no point having a poll at that point.

But Lord Hesketh, who first canvassed for the party in 1959 and was a minister under Margaret Thatcher, said last night: ‘I was appalled when we reneged on the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

‘It didn’t matter that Brown had signed it. Labour had said there would be a referendum. And Cameron could have said the treaty had not been properly dealt with, and therefore he would have been justified in holding one. Read on and comment » | Tim Shipman | Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Threat of Fascist Attacks Revealed

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: FASCIST and nationalist extremist groups are active in and pose a threat to Australia, with the country's security agency saying there are legitimate concerns they may spawn a terrorist in the style of Norway's Anders Breivik.

The assessment, in the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation's annual report to Parliament, also reveals Australia's right-wing extremists, much like the Islamic fundamentalists they loathe, draw inspiration from overseas via the internet.

''There has been a persistent but small subculture of racist and nationalist extremists in Australia, forming groups, fragmenting, re-forming and often fighting amongst themselves,'' the report states.

The appraisal also states there has been a recent rise in anarchist or ''anti-fascist'' groups, with the ideologically-opposed groups coming into conflict.

''Where such confrontations have occurred, the 'anti-fascists' have outnumbered the nationalist and racist extremists and police intervention has been required,'' the report states in its ''Australia's Security Environment'' section.

The report reveals ASIO - whose budget has grown by almost 500 per cent since 2001 and will next year move into a half-billion-dollar Canberra headquarters - has never been busier, with the number of terrorist investigations rising from about 100 in 2005 to almost 300 this year.

But it is the far-right threat that may surprise the public. » | Dylan Welch | Wednesday, October 12, 2011
David Cameron Launches Immigration Crackdown

THE GUARDIAN: • Public urged to report suspected illegal immigrants • Forced marriage could become criminal offence • Proposal for families of would-be immigrants to pay cash bond • Citizenship test to include questions on British history

David Cameron has urged the British public to report illegal immigrants and vowed to change the citizenship test so that it includes questions on British history.

The text of the prime minister's key immigration speech confirms that he wants to make forced marriage a criminal offence, and makes it clear that Downing Street backs Theresa May's desire to rewrite the immigration rules so "misinterpretations" of the right to family life do not block immigration deportations.

But his proposal to require families who want to sponsor overseas relatives to settle in Britain to post a financial bond worth thousands of pounds has already sparked a strong warning from Keith Vaz, the chairman of the Commons home affairs committee, that it will "antagonise settled communities in Britain and enrage our allies such as India".

Vaz said the speech marked the third time the financial bond had been proposed over the last decade, adding: "It was shelved before because it was unworkable. A more effective method must be found in order for immigrants to pay for public services."

The proposal to make forced marriage a criminal offence will initially be limited to introducing a criminal penalty for those who breach a forced marriage prevention order. » | Alan Travis | Home Affairs Editor | Monday, October 10, 2011

Oktober 2011
At Home with the Assads: Syria's Ruthless Ruling Family

THE GUARDIAN: The dynasty founded on Hafez al-Assad's rise from poverty and obscurity is maintained by some uncompromising characters

It is evening, and in a large house in a leafy, upmarket district of Damascus, a trio of siblings have gathered in the home of their mother, Anisa Makhlouf al-Assad, the reclusive former first lady of Syria. Along with her son Bashar, the country's current president, his younger brother Maher, commander of the brutal Fourth Division, and their formidable older sister, Bushra, she pores over the latest reports from officials across the country, as Bushra's husband, Asef Shawkat, the president's chief of staff and former military intelligence chief, looks on.

How many people came out on the protests? What did they chant? How many were killed? The family debate, perhaps, over what more can be done to put down the protests, and argue over what reforms to offer, or where next to direct the extensive security forces at their disposal. The subtext to the gathering is clear: under no circumstances will they release their grasp on the country they have ruled for more than four decades.

Is this how they happen, the family gatherings of the house of Assad, whose brutal response to the wave of popular uprisings in Syria since January has reportedly left nearly 3,000 people dead? Only whispered reports have emerged of how the country's ruling family are co-ordinating their response – most journalists, of course, have been banned from Syria since the uprising began – but the many rumours of these meetings chime with the image, long-established, of a tightknit and power-hungry cabal that rules in secret, presided over by the steely family matriarch.

"It's a mafia; the family rules as a family," says someone who was formerly allowed glimpses into the Assad regime's inner sanctum. "No one knows the exact workings, but they are closing ranks more and more." » | Nour Ali and Esther Addley | Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Two Russian Families Sue Maternity Hospital after Baby Mix-up Sees Them Raise Wrong Children

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Two Russian families are suing their local maternity hospital for "moral trauma" after learning that they were given the wrong babies 12 years ago due to an error by midwives.

The families learnt of the mix-up by chance after the husband of one of the women divorced her and then refused to pay maintenance for their daughter, saying she looked nothing like him.

To everyone's astonishment, a DNA test proved that the angry husband was right and that 12-year-old Irina Belyaeva was not biologically related to her parents, Yuri and Yuliya Belyaeva.

An investigation revealed that Irina was instead the biological daughter of a local Muslim family and that the other family's daughter, Anya, was the biological daughter of Yuri and Yuliya.

It transpired that the two children had been born within 15 minutes of each other in the same ward in 1998 but that the midwives had mixed up their wrist-tags, possibly because the two mothers were listed under their maiden names which both began with the letter A.

Both families affected live in a mining community in Russia's Chelyabinsk region. » | Andrew Osborn, Moscow | Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Egypt Protests: Government Faces Accusations of Deliberately Encouraging Sectarian Hatred

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Egypt's military leaders are under intense international pressure to explain the deaths of more than 20 Christian protesters after the army was accused of deliberately fostering sectarian hatred to disguise a power grab.

Video footage and independent testimony that emerged on Monday called into question army claims that its soldiers acted in self-defence when they killed 26 protesters, the vast majority of them Christian Copts, in central Cairo on Sunday evening.

Although Coptic protesters threw stones at soldiers during the confrontation, a number of witnesses, many of them Muslim, claimed that the army's response was either wholly unwarranted or grotesquely disproportionate.

A number of the dead were crushed to death by an armoured car that ploughed into a group of protesters as they sang hymns and held aloft the Cross, according to several accounts that were given additional credence by the condition of several corpses in a Coptic mortuary.

The soldiers were also accused of opening fire at the protesters, prompting accusations that orders had been given to kill without discrimination.

Coptic leaders yesterday called on their followers to observe a three-day fast, but in many parts of Egypt's Christian community, mourning has already given way to anger. Continue reading and comment » | Adrian Blomfield, Middle East Correspondent | Monday, October 10, 2011
Ukraine's Yulia Tymoshenko Sentenced to Seven Years in Jail

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine’s former prime minister, has been found guilty of abuse of office and sentenced to seven years in jail.

In a politically-tinged verdict that is likely to badly damage the country’s relationship with the European Union and the United States, the presiding judge said Mrs Tymoshenko had “criminally” exceeded her powers in 2009 when she was the country’s prime minister.

More specifically, he said that she had illegally concluded a gas deal with Russia that had lost the Ukrainian treasury the equivalent of £118 million pounds and damaged Ukraine’s own gas industry.

"Tymoshenko... used her official powers to criminal ends and, acting consciously, committed actions which clearly exceeded her rights and powers which had heavy consequences," said the judge Rodion Kireyev.

Ordering her to pay back all the money to the state, he sentenced her to seven years in jail, the exact term that state prosecutors had asked for.

Dressed in a cream designer outfit, Mrs Tymoshenko kept calm but was visibly shaken by what she was hearing and made several interventions during the reading of the verdict to condemn the proceedings. » | Andrew Osborn, Moscow | Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Iranian Cleric Jailed for Dissident Views 'Has Deteriorating Health Problems'

THE GUARDIAN: Kazemeyni Boroujerdi is suffering from worsening Parkinson's, diabetes and high blood pressure, according to Amnesty

An imprisoned Iranian cleric who fell foul of the authorities after advocating the separation of religion and state is in poor health condition, activists have warned.

Ayatollah Hossein Kazemeyni Boroujerdi was sentenced to 11 years in jail in June 2007 following a trial behind closed doors that found him guilty of 30 charges including acting against national security and having links with anti-revolutionaries and spies.

His supporters say the charges stemmed from his opposition to the involvement of religious clerics in politics and his public criticism of the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Boroujerdi, an outspoken Shia cleric has repeatedly called the concept of political leadership by the clergy unlawful and has described Tehran's regime as a "religious dictatorship".

Boroujerdi was arrested along with hundreds of his followers in Tehran in October 2006 after clashes between security officials and his supporters.

The 53-year-old scholar, who is currently held in Tehran's Evin prison in a ward designated for dissident clerics, was initially given a death sentence before an appeals court reduced it to 11 years in jail. He was found guilty of insulting the supreme leader, spreading propaganda against the regime and moharebeh or waging war against God, a charge that carries the death penalty under Iranian law. » | Saeed Kamali Dehghan | Monday, October 10, 2011

Forced Marriages Could Become a Criminal Offence under New Immigration Plans

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Forcing someone to marry against their will could become a criminal offence under plans set out by Prime Minister David Cameron today.

Mr Cameron announced he was making it a criminal offence to breach an order issued by the courts to prevent a forced marriage and he has asked Home Secretary Theresa May to consult on whether the practice should be made an offence in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The cross-party Commons Home Affairs Committee called earlier this year for forced marriage to be criminalised, but its recommendation was rejected by the Home Office in July for fear that it would discourage victims from coming forward.

The Prime Minister announced today he was asking Mrs May to rethink the decision in a speech in central London in which he outlined measures to get immigration under control, including "stricter and clearer" tests on those claiming the right to settle in the UK to be with their spouses.

"Forced marriage is little more than slavery," said Mr Cameron.

"To force someone into marriage is completely wrong. And I strongly believe this is a problem we should not shy away from addressing. But I know that there is a worry that criminalisation could make it less likely that those at risk will come forward. » | James Kirkup, Political Correspondent | Monday, October 10, 2011

Herman Cain steps up attacks on Occupy Wall Street protests

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Republican presidential contender Herman Cain amplified his criticism Sunday of the growing Occupy Wall Street movement, calling the protesters “jealous’ Americans who "play the victim card” and want to “take somebody else’s” Cadillac.

Cain’s remarks, on CBS’ "Face the Nation," came amidst an escalating war of words between Republicans and Democrat sover the merits of the movement, which has spread from New York to other cities across the nation, including Washington and Los Angeles.

GOP politicians in recent days have stepped up their criticism of the protesters, with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) calling them "mobs" who have pitted “Americans against Americans.”

But Cain, surging in popularity among many conservatives, seems to have had among the most virulent responses to the protests.

On CBS, Cain suggested that the rallies had been organized by labor unions to serve as a “distraction so that many people won’t focus on the failed policies of the Obama administration.”

The banking and financial services industries aren’t responsible for those policies, Cain said. “To protest Wall Street and the bankers is basically saying you’re anti-capitalism,” he said. » | James Oliphant | Washington Bureau | Sunday, October 09, 2011

Herman Cain’s comments on the Wall Street protests show that he has no uderstanding of what the Wall Street protests are about. To dismiss the protests as a manifestation of “jealousy” and the protesters wanting to “take someone else’s” Cadillac is total and utter nonsense. What we have in the States (and elsewhere in the West) today is not capitalism as capitalism is supposed to be practised, but corporatism. We have big business and banks ruling the roost.

In the US today, 40-50% of all wealth is owned by 1% of the population. This is an extremely unhealthy situation. Societies in which there are such disparities of wealth, societies in which we see huge differences between the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots, are societies which are ripe for social unrest and even revolution. We will never see harmony in society when there are such differences in living standards.

Clearly, Herman Cain has no understanding of economic history. He should get back to what he understands most: making pizzas!

Clashes Beween Christians and Muslims: Orgy of Violence Plunges Egypt into New Chaos

SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: It was meant to be a peaceful protest, but ended in a bloodbath. At least 24 people were killed in Cairo on Sunday night during a demonstration by Coptic Christians. One army vehicle drove into the crowd and ran over protestors. Eight months after the revolution, Egypt has been shaken by the new violence.

Cairo has had a horrific night with 24 people killed and at least 174 injured in clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians that have clouded hopes the nation will return to peace and liberty after Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February.

It started out as a peaceful demonstration. Some 10,000 Christians and Muslims had taken to the streets together to protest against recent violence against Christians in Egypt. They had planned to congregate at the state television building north of Tahrir Square but the marchers were attacked before they reached it.

"Stones were thrown at us and there were shots," said Alfred Raouf, a Coptic Christian who was among the demonstrators. "We were shocked." That was only the beginning. The situation escalated in front of the television building. It is unclear who triggered the clashes. "When we arrived, the military immediately started attacking us with tear gas and truncheons," said Beshoy Fayez, a demonstrator.

Other eyewitnesses reported that the crowd threw stones at the security forces, and that a policeman was surrounded and beaten up. "We weren't armed," said Raouf, "we were demonstrating against violence." He said violent thugs had infilitated the marchers to stir trouble. Others [sic] demonstrators agreed with Raouf. » | Viktoria Kleber in Cairo | Monday, October 10, 2011

Greeks Pay for Economic Crisis with Their Health

THE GUARDIAN: Rising demand and cost-cutting put services at breaking point, while drug addiction, HIV and suicide rates increase

It is 4am on the emergency ward of Evangelismos general hospital - the biggest in Greece - and the stream of patients is relentless. Dr Michalis Samarkos has not stopped working since he started his shift some 14 hours earlier, and he has been besieged by patients unable to afford the tests or the drugs they need.

Many, like the unemployed diabetic man he has just examined, have gone without treatment for several days. "When you see a diabetic unable to afford his insulin you know he is going to die," says Samarkos. "There is no infrastructure to help these people. On every front the system has failed the people it was meant to serve."

Greeks are paying for their economic disaster with their health, according to a new study.

In a letter to the Lancet medical journal, a team lead [sic] by Dr Alexander Kentikelenis and Dr David Stuckler from Cambridge University and Professor Martin McKee from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine warns of a potential "Greek tragedy". They point to signs of a dramatic decline in the health of the population and a deterioration of services at hospitals under financial pressure.

Many Greeks have lost access to healthcare coverage through work and social security plans, and rising poverty levels mean growing numbers who would previously have used the private sector are now flocking to state hospitals. Alongside savage spending cuts, the rise has put an immense strain on a chaotic and corrupt system that was already in decline. » | Helena Smith in Athens and Sarah Boseley | Monday, October 10, 2011
