Iran Accused of Trump Assassination Plot - 3 Men Charged | BBC News

Nov 8, 2024 | Three men have been charged by the US Justice Department over an alleged plot by Iran to murder Donald Trump and other American citizens. The US government says the plot was thwarted by the FBI.

One of the accused men hasn't been arrested and is believed to be in Iran.

Prosecutors say the plan dates back to September, before the Presidential election. They allege that an unnamed official in Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards planned to carry out surveillance and kill Mr Trump.

Investigators learned of the plot while interviewing Farhad Shakeri, an Afghan national identified by officials as an Iranian government agent, who was deported from the US after being imprisoned on robbery charges. He told investigators that a Revolutionary Guard contact in Iran instructed him to assassinate Mr Trump, according to the criminal complaint.

Two other men who the authorities say were recruited to participate in other assassinations, including a prominent Iranian-American journalist, have been arrested.

Donald Trump has a history of animosity towards Iran and the allegations raise questions about [how] this will affect his policy towards the country in his new Presidency.

Russia Foils 'Chechen Plot' to Assassinate Vladimir Putin

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Russian and Ukrainian security services have foiled a plot to blow up Vladimir Putin shortly after this Sunday's presidential election in Russia, it emerged on Monday.

State television in Russia said that special forces had seized two conspirators in Odessa, southern Ukraine, after an explosion in an apartment in January.

The Chechen alleged ringleader, Adam Osmayev, 31, has reportedly confessed to planning the assassination on the orders of Doku Umarov, the emir of the Islamist insurgency against Moscow's rule in the North Caucasus region. » | Tom Parfitt in Moscow | Monday, February 27, 2012

Assets Frozen over Alleged Iran Plot to Assassinate Saudi Envoy

THE GUARDIAN: UK Treasury action against five men after purported plan by Iran's elite Quds Force to kill Adel al-Jubeir in US

The UK Treasury has ordered the assets of five men frozen in connection with the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the US.

The finance ministry confirmed it had acted under the Terrorist Asset Freezing Act, after ministers pledged action over the purported plan to kill the Saudi envoy, Adel al-Jubeir, in a bomb attack. The decision does not necessarily mean that the five men hold assets in Britain.

Two men have been charged by US authorities, accused of attempting to hire an alleged Mexican drug cartel member to carry out the killing.

US officials have described the plot as a clumsy but serious operation by Iran's elite foreign action unit, the Quds Force.

The Treasury confirmed the ministry had imposed asset freezes against five men. They include both men charged in the case – Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old US citizen who also holds an Iranian passport, and Gholam Shakuri, an alleged member of Iran's Quds Force, who remains at large in Iran.

Britain also froze the assets of three other men – Hamed Abdollahi, a senior Quds officer alleged to have helped co-ordinate the plot, Abdul Reza Shahlai and Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds force who allegedly oversaw the plot. The US last week acted against the same five men. » | Associated Press | Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Iran Calls Saudi Ambassador Assassination Allegations an 'Evil Plot'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Iran called US allegations of a plan to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington an "evil plot" by the United States, in a complaint sent to the United Nations.

Iran's US ambassador accused Israel of carrying out the murders of Iranian nuclear scientists with US support, in a letter sent to UN leader Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council.

"Iran categorically and in the strongest terms condemns this shameful allegation by the United States authorities and deplores it as a well-thought evil plot in line with their anti-Iranian policy," Mohammad Khazaee said in the letter.

US authorities said earlier they had uncovered a plot by the Iranian government to assassinate the Saudi envoy to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir. The US administration has vowed to hold Iran to account.

Two men have been charged with conspiring with Iranian government factions to stage the attack and one is in US custody.

Mr Khazaee expressed "outrage" over the allegations in his letter. » | Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Obama on the Hit List: Bin Laden Was Plotting to Kill Him during the 2012 Election

MAIL ONLINE: Osama Bin Laden was plotting to assassinate Barack Obama during the 2012 Presidential election, intelligence has revealed.

The Al Qaeda leader was obsessed with killing the U.S. President, who he believed 'violated the Muslim faith'.

Bin Laden took 'very personally' U.S. military campaigns in Afghanistan and the Middle East and was so disgusted, he could not even watch Mr Obama on television.

Videos found in Bin Laden's final hideout in Pakistan show the terror leader at home changing the channel every time Mr Obama comes on, unable to even look at his image.

The extraordinary details emerged from the enormous cache of intelligence seized from Bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad during the raid in which he was killed.

The 200million pages of data give chilling details about Bin Laden's lust for jihad on the West.

The CIA said it learned more from ten days of studying the 'treasure trove' of computers and handwritten journals than in the past ten years.

The terrorist leader had also built up a 'fairly extensive' stash of pornography at his final mansion hideout in Pakistan.

According to CIA sources, until his last days Bin Laden was plotting a terror campaign to target Los Angeles, New York and London that would have topped 9/11.

The planned attacks were part of a campaign to drive Western troops out of the Middle East. Continue reading and comment » | Daniel Bates | Friday, May 13, 2011

Pope Visit: Five Suspected Islamist Terrorists Arrested Over Assassination Plot

THE TELEGRAPH: Police have arrested five suspected Islamist terrorists, working as street cleaners in London, over an alleged plan [to] assassinate the Pope.

The men were arrested during raids at 5.45am at a rubbish depot in central London based on an intelligence tip off received overnight.

The suspects, aged 26, 27, 36, 40 and 50 were arrested by officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

They are said to be from a variety of nationalities including a number of Algerian origin.

The depot where they worked is less than a mile from Hyde Park where the Pope was due to hold a prayer vigil tomorrow evening.

As street cleaners they would have been able to move relatively freely and inconspicuously through the London crowds.

Westminster City Council said the men worked for Veolia Environmental Services, a contractor which employs 650 on-street staff to keep Westminster's streets clean and free from rubbish.

The men have been taken to a central London police station where they will be interviewed by detectives.

Searches are being carried out under the Terrorism Act 2000 at the rubbish depot and at residential premises in north and east London. >>> Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent | Friday, September 17, 2010

Here we go again! Adherents of the ‘religion of peace’ stirring up trouble. When are we going to come to terms with reality? With all these Muslims living amongst us, we are never going to be able to live as freely as we used to, never going to be able to be anything other than extremely vigilant. It is going to cost us a fortune in security services. The whole situation is ludicrous. And unsustainable! And why? What do we want these people here for, only to endanger innocent people's lives? – © Mark

THE TIMES: The winner of Iraq’s parliamentary election, who believes that he should lead the next government, fears for his life after being warned of plots to assassinate him. Ayad Allawi, the leader of the Iraqiya block, told The Times that he had received warnings from American generals and Iraqi officials about detailed plots to kill him. US forces have recently put up more concrete barriers around his house in response to the threat.

Mr Allawi, Iraq’s first Prime Minister after the US-led invasion, said that the threats against him had multiplied since the elections in March. “I got a letter from the Americans saying that there is a plot against me. Then some other friends in high positions also told me the same thing. These are evil people’s designs,” he said.

Asked who might want to kill him, he replied: “I don’t know,” but then went on to suggest that the outgoing Government of Nouri al-Maliki was aiding the work of the would-be assassins. Read on and comment >>> Oliver August, Baghdad | Monday, June 21, 2010

Afghanistan: David Cameron's Flight Diverted After 'Assassination Plot'

THE TELEGRAPH: David Cameron was forced to abandon a visit to a British base in Afghanistan after military intelligence suggested a plot to assassinate the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister was flying to a British base in Helmand province on Thursday when telephone calls between Taliban insurgents were intercepted, suggesting a plan to fire on his helicopter.

Mr Cameron and the party of aides and journalists travelling with him were unharmed and no physical attack is believed to have taken place.

But the apparent threat to the Prime Minister threatens to overshadow his first visit to Afghanistan since taking office, which was intended to underline the improving security situation in the country. >>> James Kirkup, in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan | Thursday, June 10, 2010

Turkish Nationalist Plotters 'Planned to Kill Prime Minister'

TIMES ONLINE: Members of a nationalist plot to overthrow the Turkish Government planned to attack the Nato headquarters in Turkey and assassinate 12 prominent figures, including the Prime Minister, a court heard today.

Fifty-two additional suspects, including a former senior policeman, were charged with involvement in the alleged campaign of chaos and violence that was to culminate in a military coup. A court accepted the third, 1,454-page indictment in the Ergenekon trial, charging the ultranationalist, ultra-secularist group.

Two four-star generals and senior figures from the security forces, business, politics, academia and the media are among the defendants as Turkey confronts for the first time what has long been known as the Deep State. The network is considered to be the true, military-backed power behind the throne in this mainly Muslim democracy.

Ergenekon, named after a mythical valley where ancient Turks once lived, is considered the latest incarnation of an organisation that has allegedly existed for decades under different guises. It was given a new impetus and its new title after the rise of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Prime Minister, whose party was first elected in 2002. His background as a political Islamist has helped the group to sway public opinion, but it is his reformist, pro-European Union actions and policies that are most offensive to this isolationist and anti-Western group’s hard core. >>> Suna Erdem in Istanbul | Thursday, August 06, 2009

Barack Obama ‘Ought to Be Shot’ Says Racist Plotter

THE TELEGRAPH: A man at the centre of a suspected assassination plot against Senator Barack Obama has said that the presidential candidate "ought to be shot" because of his colour.

The chilling threat by Nathan Johnson, 33, followed his arrest with two other men when an arms cache was found in a pick-up truck. The men, one of whom is said to have strong ties to the white supremacist movement, were last night under investigation and facing initial charges for illegal firearms possession.

Mr Johnson boasted in an interview with the CBS4 radio station in Denver that he and his friends Tharin Gartrell, 28, and Shawn Robert Adolph, 33, had discussed killing Mr Obama when he accepted the nomination of the Democratic party at a sports stadium on Thursday.

"He don't belong in political office," he said. "Blacks don't belong in political office. He ought to be shot."

US authorities moved quickly to state there had been "no credible" threat to Mr Obama's life and any plot the men had hatched had been "crude", while his advisers sought to play down the incident. "We're not commenting on security issues," said Anita Dunn, a senior aide.

But the Secret Service, FBI and the US Joint Terrorism Task Force are all investigating the alleged plot and more arrests could follow. Barack Obama ‘Ought to Be Shot’ Says Racist Plotter >>> By Toby Harnden in Denver | August 27, 2008
