The US Launches a Diplomatic Campaign to Dismantle the International Criminal Court | DW News

July 15, 2026 | The United States says it wants to "dismantle" the International Criminal Court, a tribunal that investigates genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Washington has long resisted joining the ICC and has even sanctioned some of its judges, but the latest push marks a dramatic escalation.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio claims the court threatens US military and law enforcement operations and undermines its sovereignty. However, that's contrary to the reality of how it operates, according to Harvard Law School Professor Alex Whiting, who spoke to DW's Ben Fajzullin.

Despite earlier criticism of the court for focusing on cases from African nations, Whiting says the ICC is now playing a vital role in upholding justice in many places where human rights are being abused.

Exploring the Science behind Homo and Heterosexuality | SLICE Science | Full Documentary

Jun 13, 2026 | Natural selection predisposes us to heterosexuality and reproduction. A portion of the population thinks this is a choice or a decision. But not only. Since several years science interrogates the roots of sexual orientation, homo and hetero. Have we really a choice?

The spectacular advances in research on the human genome, coupled with recent studies on the effects of hormones on behavior, upsets conventional viewpoints on our sexual behaviors, and control of them by our brain. Science has discovered quite recently that biological factors are themselves influenced by the environment, and individual history. This is new and fundamental scientific data.

This document brings new light on the diversity of sexual behaviors, which are not specifically human, since some 450 animal species have been identified as being at least partially bisexual.

Homosexuality is not the mental illness of yesterday, nor the genetic defect of tomorrow; it is simply a natural variant of one of our basic biological characteristics, our sexual orientation.

Keir Starmer Becomes First UK PM to Receive France’s Légion d’honneur

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Emmanuel Macron honours outgoing prime minister for leadership role in supporting Ukraine

Keir Starmer has become the first UK prime minister to be presented with the Légion d’honneur by a French president, in recognition of his work with France on the security of Europe.

Emmanuel Macron awarded the historic honour to Starmer for his leadership in setting up the coalition of the willing – a group of countries chaired by France and the UK that have pledged to support Ukraine – at a critical moment for Europe in early 2025.

The only other British prime minister to receive a similar award – at a higher level, the Grand-Croix of the Légion d’honneur – was Winston Churchill in 1958 in recognition of his leadership and close ties to France during the second world war.

Awarding the honour to Starmer underlines the significant shift from Macron’s more testy relationships with some previous prime ministers, the French leader having frequently clashed with the Conservatives Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss over Brexit. » | Pippa Crerar | Political editor | Tuesday, July 14, 2026

Travellers Warned of Methanol Poisoning Risks in New Campaign

BBC: When Calum MacDonald visited a bar in Laos he experienced "a blinding kaleidoscopic light" permanently impairing his vision, less than two days after having a drink.

He was poisoned by methanol in 2024, and has since joined a UK government campaign to raise awareness of the risks that turned his life upside down.

MacDonald, who is in his 20s and from Surrey, told BBC Breakfast he was unaware of the dangers when travelling and if he had known "I probably would be in a different situation today".

Methanol is a highly toxic industrial strength form of alcohol that can sometimes be found in counterfeit, illegally produced or contaminated alcoholic drinks.

As little as 30ml - about a single shot - can be fatal to an adult, while smaller amounts can cause serious and permanent harm, including blindness.

Twenty-nine destinations now carry methanol poisoning warnings on UK government travel advice, including popular tourist destinations such as Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam. » | Olivia Ireland | Wednesday, July 15, 2026

Iran Threatens to Block More Trade Routes as US Launches Fresh Strikes

BBC: Iran has threatened to block further trading routes in the region, as the US launched a fresh wave of strikes on military targets.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the Strait of Hormuz would remain shut until the US ends its "acts of aggression" and said other regional oil and gas export channels could also be closed.

The warning came as the US military's Central Command (Centcom) said it had carried out drone, air and navy strikes on Iran on Wednesday morning, in addition to a seven-hour operation overnight.

Six Dead in an Elevator After Fire in Central Brussels

THE NEW YORK TIMES: After a fire broke out at the Oxy building in central Brussels on Tuesday morning, six bodies were found in an elevator.

Six people were killed when a fire broke out at a construction site in central Brussels on Tuesday, according to the law enforcement authorities investigating the cause of the blaze.

The dead have not yet been identified, the authorities said. The building was not yet permanently occupied, and only construction workers were believed to be on site.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire on the second floor of the Oxy building at 7:50 a.m. local time, said Walter Derieuw, a spokesman for the fire department of Brussels.

The planned mixed-use building was to house offices, apartments and a hotel. The fire appeared to have spread through the elevator shaft to lower floors and was extinguished in a little over an hour, Mr. Derieuw said.

Six bodies were discovered in one of six elevators in the building, said Brecht Speybrouck, the labor auditor of Brussels. Investigators with the labor prosecutor’s office are looking into the cause of the blaze. » | Koba Ryckewaert | Reporting from Brussels | Published: Tuesday, July 14, 2026. In Iran, Trump Has Found an Opponent He Cannot Easily Dominate

THE GUARDIAN: The president is accustomed to forcing other countries to bend to his will. But he is struggling to come up with a strategy to extract Iranian concessions as the cease-fire he brokered collapses.

On the 136th day of his war against Iran, President Trump came up with a new plan. He would impose tolls on ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for protecting them from Iranian forces.

But that was then. On Day 137, he had another new plan. No tolls after all.

Mr. Trump’s 180-degree reversal on Tuesday in the face of protests from his Arab allies who were not so excited about paying tolls reflected how adrift he seems to be in prosecuting his war against Iran. What was supposed to be a clean four-to-six-week operation is now in its messy 20th week. Improvisation and impulse are not working.

A president who has made flexing his power on the world stage a hallmark of his second term has found in Iran an opponent that so far will not bend to his will and a geopolitical conflict that cannot be won through nasty social media posts or tariff threats. The memorandum of understanding that he brokered with Tehran last month to halt the fighting turns out to have been a memorandum of misunderstanding, and Mr. Trump now seems to have neither a clear military nor diplomatic strategy.

“He’s encountered a country that is not willing to play by his set of rules, which is you bend and kiss the ring and tell him how great he is and try to get whatever concession he’s willing to give,” said Vali Nasr, a professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies who has advised presidents and secretaries of state on the Middle East. » | Peter Baker | Peter Baker is the chief White House correspondent and reported from Washington. | Tuesday, July 14, 2026

Trump Threatens to Expand Strikes on Iran’s Civilian Infrastructure

THE GUARDIAN: US president says he will knock out all power plants and bridges in effort to force Tehran to agree to deal amid impasse over strait

Donald Trump has threatened to expand US strikes on Iran next week to target power plants and bridges if Tehran does not agree to a deal amid a continuing dispute over the strait of Hormuz.

“Next week it gets really bad for them because next week comes the power plants. Next week comes the bridges,” the US president said in a Fox News interview on Tuesday. “We’re going to knock out all their power plants. We’re going to knock out all their bridges unless they get to the table and negotiate.”

Trump made similar comments in March, when he threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power stations and fresh water plants if Tehran did not agree to peace terms “shortly”. Destroying civilian infrastructure such as power and water facilities would be illegal under international humanitarian law and would probably constitute a war crime.

Trump’s comments came as US forces carried out strikes against Iran for a fourth day straight and reimposed a naval blockade on the country’s ports in the strait of Hormuz. » | Staff and agencies | Wednesday, July 15, 2026

Are US Politicians Too Old? | Global News Podcast

July 14, 2026 | The death of the longtime Repblican senator Lindsey Graham at the age of 71, and the hospitalisation of his 84-year-old colleague Mitch McConnell, have raised new questions about the advanced age of America's political leaders.

President Donald Trump celebrated his 80th birthday last month - becoming just the second octogenarian president after Joe Biden. Several lawmakers are even older, including 84-year-old Bernie Sanders, 86-year-old Nancy Pelosi, and 92-year-old Chuck Grassley.

And while the likes of Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth are still in their 40s, the age in the Senate is around 65 - a time of life when most Americans have retired.

We ask the BBC's Washington correspondent Daniel Bush about the benefits and drawbacks of an elder political class, why voters choose old age pensioners to represent them, and who may lead the US into the future, as some of its most powerful politicians near the ends of their careers.

Are American politicians too old? What a silly question! Of course they are too old! Most of them are geriatrics! In fact, America is a gerontocracy! An oligarchic, corrupt, gerontocracy! The Revival of Spain's Dictator Franco? | DW Documentary

July 14, 2026 | Ninety years ago, a coup against the Spanish Republic led to Francisco Franco's dictatorship. Today, many people of all ages in Spain are romanticizing that regime, a trend fuelled by the far-right political party Vox.

After Franco's death in 1975, Spain's democracy was established based on the Amnesty Law of 1977, which shielded Franco-era agents and officials from prosecution. But victims are still demanding justice and compensation.

Today, there are two opposing narratives: One is based on a duty to tell the truth, while the other uses nostalgia to revive a former authoritarian system of government.

Between the ruling left-wing coalition, right wing parties and the far right, there appears to be no path forward to reconcile conflicting views of Franco's legacy. Against the backdrop of this political divide, even some young people long for the old order under Franco.

Right-wing populists are exploiting this trend to once again call democracy into question — especially the far-right party Vox, whose influence is growing among voters.

Argentina: British Falkland Islanders Are ‘Artificial’

THE TELEGRAPH: Buenos Aires denounces ‘illegitimate occupation’ and demands talks on sovereignty

Argentina’s foreign minister called Falklands Islanders an “artificially implanted” population in a lengthy essay demanding Britain enter talks to hand over the territory.

Pablo Quirno said the 2013 referendum held on the archipelago, in which islanders chose to remain British, was illegitimate and called for negotiations over the Falklands’ future.

“Time does not transform an illegitimate occupation into sovereignty. Nor will it divide the territorial unity of the Argentine Republic,” Mr Quirno argued in La Nacion, Argentina’s leading conservative paper.

He said that the 1982 war and the 2013 vote had failed to resolve the Falklands dispute, and added that sovereignty of the archipelago should not be decided by a “population artificially implanted by the occupying power”. » | Iona Cleave | US Correspondent | Sunday, July 12, 2026

Marco Rubio has unveiled a plan to dismantle the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing it of posing “an intolerable threat to US sovereignty”.

The Trump administration said it would pressure other countries to withdraw from the court, marking a sharp escalation in efforts to isolate the Hague-based institution and starve it of political and financial support.

“The ICC and its friends are waging a war against our country, not with bullets or missiles, but with statutes, compacts and the force of so-called international law,” the US secretary of state said in a video statement.

The state department said the campaign would “systematically disable the ICC’s ability to operate, target American servicemen or officials, or otherwise threaten American sovereignty”. » | Telegraph’s Foreign Staff | Tuesday, July 14, 2026

» | Luise Evers | Montag, 13. Juli 2026
