Is Austria to Be the Venue for the Next Showdown?

SONS OF APES AND PIGS: One of our very informed correspondent in Austria, the representative of the Austrian Association of Academics-Vienna chapter at the Counterjihad Conference in Brussels, sent me what appears to be a prelude to very alarming developments that would set the stage for an open challenge to Austrians and Austrian authorities from Muslims.

What we see happening, is what all people aware of the subversive and insidious nature of Islam knew will happen since years ago. A confrontation with Islam is inevitable. Unless all the Chamberlains of the Western governments see the obvious, that the situation is reaching the point of no return in every Western country, and act urgently by probing the evil teaching of that “holy” book that will put the world on fire with unimaginable consequences. I urge all Western populations to show their resolve in fighting for their freedom and survival by all means. Forgetting about their political affiliations and support the politicians that are exposing the only “religion” that thrived on spreading death and desolation wherever it existed. This is the priority without which, all your other priorities and aspirations will not see the day. Islam is like the brake pedal, you have to step on it, to stop and control the car. … >>> By Elisabeth of Austria

A Defender of the Faith Needs Better Judgment

THE TELEGRAPH: Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has many fine qualities: he is unquestionably sincere, well-meaning, and intelligent. He has manifested an admirable commitment to upholding spiritual values. But his position as leader of the Church of England requires him to have another virtue: that of judgment. And unfortunately, the events of last week have shown a surprising and regrettable lapse of judgment.

He must have known what he was getting into when he entered the minefield of whether Muslim communities should be able to regulate themselves by sharia law. He has insisted that he did not mean to imply that they should be allowed to have a parallel legal system, existing alongside the law of the land. But the fact is that what he did say was so obscure, imprecise and difficult to follow that it could easily be interpreted as endorsing precisely the position from which he has now gone to such pains to distance himself.

A BBC radio studio is not a seminar room, and a lecture in public is not the same as a symposium with academic colleagues. Public debate inevitably operates in bolder, clearer, less sophisticated colours than the nuances of High Table conversation - a reality which the Archbishop may not like, but has to live with for as long as he is head of the Anglican Communion. The media coverage which reported him - wrongly, he insists - as advocating the granting of legal legitimacy to sharia courts was wholly understandable, for his words appeared to support that view. The blame for the resulting uproar must ultimately rest with Rowan Williams himself. Had he spoken in a less ambiguous style, his musings on how "to tease out some of the broader issues around the rights of religious groups within a secular state" would in all probability have been ignored.

They were not, however, ignored. And the fact remains that the Archbishop has got into a pickle from which he has yet to extricate himself. His language was not only unclear: his thinking was uncharacteristically muddled. His suggestion that the British state should recognise different kinds of justice, including sharia, because that would enable people with different religious convictions to feel "loyal" to British society, is preposterous: it is a recipe, not for the social cohesion and unity which he says he craves, but for separatism and conflict. Far from overcoming cultural conflict, its primary effect would be to enforce division by emphasising it. In his effort to find an accommodation with other religions, in particular Islam… >>>

Dr Williams's predecessor Lord Carey has also weighed into the row saying the acceptance of some Muslim laws would be "disastrous" for Britain.

Islam: The Religion of Envy

It is heartening to hear that Jack Wheeler, one of the architects of the Reagan Doctrine, agrees with one of my basic conclusions in my book, ‘The Dawning of a New Dark Age’, namely that ENVY is at the root of much of our problems with Islam.

A Question of Honour: 17,000 Victims a Year in UK Alone

THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY: Ministers are stepping up the fight against so-called 'honour' crime and forced marriages. Detectives say official statistics are 'merely the tip of the iceberg' of this phenomenon. Brian Brady investigates

Up to 17,000 women in Britain are being subjected to "honour" related violence, including murder, every year, according to police chiefs.

And official figures on forced marriages are the tip of the iceberg, says the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

It warns that the number of girls falling victim to forced marriages, kidnappings, sexual assaults, beatings and even murder by relatives intent on upholding the "honour" of their family is up to 35 times higher than official figures suggest.

The crisis, with children as young as 11 having been sent abroad to be married, has prompted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to call on British consular staff in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan to take more action to identify and help British citizens believed to be the victims of forced marriages in recent years.

The Home Office is drawing up an action plan to tackle honour-based violence which "aims to improve the response of police and other agencies" and "ensure that victims are encouraged to come forward with the knowledge that they will receive the help and support they need". And a Civil Protection Bill coming into effect later this year will give courts greater guidance on dealing with forced marriages. Williams Is Just Wrong

SUNDAY EXPRESS: I’M starting to worry about the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Dr Rowan Williams is, by all accounts, a clever and well-meaning man but his call for the adoption of sharia law in Britain would suggest that his common sense has gone the same way as his razor and deserted him for good.

What’s really frightening is not just that the Archbishop thinks sharia law is “unavoidable” but that he believes it to be “very desirable”. Er, which bits exactly? The right of husbands to beat their wives? The amputations of criminals?
The stoning to death of women who commit adultery? Thanks, but no thanks.

Dr Williams says that the UK has to “face up to the fact” that some of its citizens do not relate to the British legal system and suggests that adopting parts of Islamic sharia law – such as those ruling divorce or financial matters – would help maintain social cohesion.

Wrong, wrong and wrong again, Archbishop.

Social cohesion is about everyone sharing the same values and respect for the law. You can’t have two separate legal systems, based on entirely separate principles, running side by side, giving one religious group different treatment from every other. That isn’t the rule of law but the end of the rule of law. Williams Is Just Wrong >>> By Julia Hartley-Brewer

In Israel, Ehud Olmert Is Likened to Chamberlain

YNET NEWS: Just like Britain’s Chamberlain, Prime Minister Olmert must quit over disastrous policies

On May 10, 1940 Neville Chamberlain finally resigned his office as British prime minister due to the disastrous direction his policies had taken the country. Despite the fact that his policy of appeasement of the previous four years had been so totally discredited by the German invasion of Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, Chamberlain remained in office for another seven months. During this time he presided over the fall of Norway and Denmark to Germany and the invasion of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg on the day of his resignation.

Israel Moves to Allow Same-Sex Couples to Adopt

YNET NEWS: Top legal official rules 'partner' referred to in adoptions laws also applies to members of same sex unions; bottom line: Gays and lesbians may adopt their partner's child

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz ruled on Sunday that Israeli law grants members of same sex unions the right to adopt their partner's children and thus be considered the legal guardians of their joint children vis-à-vis official State institutions.

Discussion on the matter was spurred by the Ministry of Social Affairs in order to discern the official State position in wake of recent legal rulings on the matter.

The discussion included officials from Child Services, members of the Attorney General's Office, officials from the Ministries of Social Affairs and Justice as well as from the State Prosecutor's office.

At the end of the exchange, it was decided that the term "partner" in Israeli adoption laws does include partners in a same sex union.

Top UK Judges in Key Ruling on Shariah Marriage

THE OBSERVER: Three senior judges are to rule on the legality of an arranged marriage conducted in the UK under sharia law, a judgment that could have profound consequences for British Muslims.

Last week, as Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, declared it was 'inevitable' that certain parts of Islamic law would be introduced into Britain, the Court of Appeal was told how a 26-year-old British Muslim with learning difficulties was married over the telephone to a woman in Bangladesh. It was arranged by the man's father and deemed lawful under sharia law.

Lord Justice Thorpe, Lord Justice Hall and Lady Justice Hallett were asked by the man's family to reject an earlier decision that, because the groom was unable to give his consent, the marriage was unlawful. Mr Justice Wood said that the true test into the validity of the marriage was 'whether the marriage is so offensive to the conscience of the English court that it should refuse to recognise and give effect to the proper foreign law'.

The judge added that the long-standing British policy to recognise sharia marriages conducted abroad should be offset by the understanding that 'there are occasions when such a marriage cannot be recognised in England, for example where to do so would be repugnant to public policy'.

The case was brought by Westminster city council community services department after the local authority raised concerns about a marriage in which the groom could not possibly have given consent because of his learning disabilities.

The marriage took place in September 2006. Although the bridegroom stayed in London and listened to the ceremony by speakerphone, the ceremony took place in Bangladesh and was declared valid under sharia law.

Yogi Amin of the law firm Irwin Mitchell, representing Westminster council, said: 'This case highlights that the law in this country may clash with sharia law and the cultural wishes of the family.' He added: 'The High Court held that the marriage in this case ... is not valid under English law, and that any marriage entered into by this vulnerable adult whether inside or outside England will not be recognised under English law.' Powerful Clergy Launch Attack on Archbishop

THE MAIL ON SUNDAY: Two of the most powerful figures in the church today united to launch a stinging attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury after his comments on sharia law.

As pressure mounted on Dr Rowan Williams, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, insisted that migrants must obey the British legal system.

Meanwhile, Lord Carey, a former Archbishop of Canterbury, claimed any adoption of sharia would be "disastrous" for Britain.

He went on: "He (Dr Williams) has overstated the case for accommodating Islamic legal codes.

"His conclusion that Britain will eventually have to concede some place in law for aspects of sharia is a view I cannot share.

"There can be no exceptions to the laws of our land which have been so painfully honed by the struggle for democracy and human rights."

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Lord Carey went on to claim multiculturism had created Islamic ghettos and that the introduction of sharia would only lead to more demands from the Muslim community.

"This is absolutely inevitable, since questions to do with the separation of 'church and state' are largely new to Islam. Sharia law trumps civil law every time," he wrote.

"Many Muslim interpreters of sharia believe that it supersedes secular law and assume that its 'God-given' status would lead to the point of eventually replacing civil law." Two of the most powerful clergy in Britain launch stinging attack on Archbishop over sharia row >>>

Shariah Law May Result in ‘Legal Apartheid’

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Senior religious leaders attack multiculturalism and sharia law today, warning that they are "disastrous", socially divisive and are destroying Britain's culture and values.

Lord Carey and Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor rebut the call of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, for Islamic law to be recognised in Britain.

Lord Carey, the former archbishop of Canterbury, said: "His acceptance of some Muslim laws within British law would be disastrous for the nation. He has overstated the case for accommodating Islamic legal codes.

"His conclusion that Britain will eventually have to concede some place in law for aspects of sharia is a view I cannot share.

"There can be no exceptions to the laws of our land which have been so painfully honed by the struggle for democracy and human rights."

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, said that the Government's promotion of multiculturalism had destroyed the unity that used to hold society together. Immigrants must "obey the laws of this country".

The Laws of the Land Must Be Obeyed!

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Tucked behind Westminster Cathedral on a quiet back street, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor's home is only a short walk from Lambeth Palace, the Archbishop of Canterbury's official residence which sits on the south-bank of the Thames.

On the issues of sharia law and multiculturalism, however, Britain's two most senior Christian leaders appear to be worlds apart.

Dr Rowan Williams, head of the Anglican Church, caused uproar last week with his suggestion that the incorporation of aspects of sharia into UK law might be "unavoidable", and could aid social cohesion. Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, leader of the 4.5? million Catholics in England and Wales, begs to differ. He is adamant that such a move would only make segregation even more entrenched.

"I don't believe in a multicultural society," he says firmly. "When people come into this country they have to obey the laws of the land."

He has a mellifluous voice and an affable manner, but the cardinal becomes steely when discussing the problems facing British society, and the issue of sharia law.

"There are going to be certain things which might clash in the overall culture of the country. That's where one has to make a judgement," he says, then pauses before continuing, aware of the sensitivity of the issue. "There are aspects of sharia that are practised that we certainly wouldn't want in this country. The laws of this country don't allow forced marriages or polygamy.

"It seems to me a government and a country has a right to make sure that those laws are kept." People here ‘must obey the laws of the land’ >>>

’Inbreeding’ a Big Problem among Muslim Community, Warn Ministers

TIMESONLINE: A government minister has warned that inbreeding among immigrants is causing a surge in birth defects - comments likely to spark a new row over the place of Muslims in British society.

Phil Woolas, an environment minister, said the culture of arranged marriages between first cousins was the “elephant in the room”. Woolas, a former race relations minister, said: “If you have a child with your cousin the likelihood is there’ll be a genetic problem.”

The minister, whose views were supported by medical experts this weekend, said: “The issue we need to debate is first cousin marriages, whereby a lot of arranged marriages are with first cousins, and that produces lots of genetic problems in terms of disability [in children].”

Woolas emphasised the practice did not extend to all Muslim communities but was confined mainly to families originating from rural Pakistan. Archbishop Under Pressure to Quit

BBC: The Archbishop of Canterbury continues to face calls for his resignation despite attempts to defuse the row over his Islamic Sharia law comments.

Dr Rowan Williams has been condemned from inside and outside his church for saying the adoption of parts of the law was "unavoidable" in Britain.

At least two General Synod members have called for him to quit and he has been heckled as he left a church service.

But supporters say his comments have been misinterpreted.

The archbishop is said to be shocked and hurt by the hostility his comments have provoked, and on his website he said he "certainly did not call for its introduction as some kind of parallel jurisdiction to the civil law".

However the criticism mounted as his predecessor Lord George Carey accused Dr Williams of overstating the case for accommodating Islamic legal codes. ’Brilliant scholar’ >>>
