The Prince of Wales and Princess Royal have joined world leaders at the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V in Oslo.

Thousands lined the streets and a 21-gun salute rang out over the capital at the start of the procession from the royal palace to Oslo Cathedral.

King Haakon VIII, the late King’s son, and other senior royals walked behind the coffin, draped in the red Norwegian royal standard.

Queen Mette-Marit, King Haakon’s wife, also attended the funeral despite being in recovery from a lung transplant.

Last week, she was unable to attend her husband’s oath ceremony in parliament because of complications following her operation. » | Telegraph’s Foreign Staff | Wednesday, September 9, 2026

UK Accuses Israeli Government of "Ethnic Cleansing" as Diplomatic Crisis Unfolds in Middle East

Sep 9, 2026 | The UK Labour government, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, has executed a historic shift in Middle East policy. In an address to the House of Commons, Britain officially declared Israel’s occupation of the West Bank unlawful in its entirety, accusing state-backed settler groups of committing "ethnic cleansing" against Palestinians.

To enforce this stance, the UK announced an import ban on all goods originating from illegal West Bank settlements, alongside sanctions prohibiting UK businesses from providing construction, financing, or advertising services for settlement expansion. In response, Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Sa'ar, slammed the measures as "morally distorted," ordered the closure of the British Consulate in Jerusalem, barred 12 British MPs from entering Israel and terminated security cooperation.

Pope Leo on Same-sex Blessings in the Catholic Church Following German Cardinal Controversy

When asked about the blessing of same-sex couples after a decision by German Cardinal Reinhard Marx in Munich and Freising, Pope Leo XIV said Church unity should not be reduced to sexual ethics.

“First of all, I think it’s very important to understand that the unity or division of the Church should not revolve around sexual matters,” he said. “We tend to think that when the Church is talking about morality, that the only issue of morality is sexual, and in reality, I believe there are much greater and more important issues, such as justice, the equality, freedom of men and women, freedom of religion, that would all take priority before that particular issue.”

Leo said the Holy See had already made clear to the German bishops that it does not agree with the “formalized blessing of couples,” including homosexual couples or couples in irregular situations, beyond what Pope Francis had permitted.

Invoking Francis’ well-known statement of “Tutti, tutti, tutti,” Leo said: “All are welcome, all are invited. All are invited to follow Jesus, and all are invited to look for conversion in their lives.”

“To go beyond that today, I think that the topic can cause more disunity than unity,” he added, “and that we should look for ways to build our unity upon Jesus Christ and what Jesus Christ teaches.”

Ein Kaiser für Österreich? | ARTE Re:

Trump Floats Renaming New Mexico as ‘New America,’ Prompting Pushback

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The suggestion, posted on social media, appeared to be the latest in the president’s efforts to alter geographic names.

President Trump appeared to suggest on Sunday that New Mexico should be renamed “New America,” prompting swift backlash from the state’s Democratic leaders over his latest effort to put an American stamp on geographic names.

On social media, Mr. Trump shared an image of a map of New Mexico with the word “Mexico” crossed out with a red X and replaced with “America.” The White House re-shared the image shortly after on its official X account.

The president posted again several hours later, with what appeared to be an A.I. video of him placing a label with the word “America” over “Mexico” on a “Welcome to New Mexico” road sign.

Mr. Trump has no legal authority to rename any state, which in New Mexico’s case is written into its Constitution. Any proposed change would have to originate within the state, a prospect that New Mexico’s Democratic leaders rejected forcefully on Sunday. » | Dan Watson | Monday, September 7, 2026

German Far-right's Breakthrough Shakes Europe to Its Core • FRANCE 24 English

Sep 7, 2026 | Not enough to win outright but enough to shake Germany and Europe to their core: the far-right Alternative für Deutschland trouncing the ruling conservatives in the impoverished former East German region of Saxony-Anhalt. We’ll ask about the consequences of voting for an anti-immigrant, pro-Russian party that wants schools to teach less about the ills of Hitler and more the glory of Bismarck.

Will Sunday’s result further fuel the momentum of the far-right in places like Sweden which votes next Sunday or here in France where the far-right’s the odds-on favourite in next spring’s presidential election? Here you see the president of Marine Le Pen’s party Jordan Bardella who, after dropping in on Nigel Farage Reform UK party, was invited to speak to Italian business leaders at a weekend forum. A further normalization of a party that once seemed fringe?

As for the mainstream, be it France or Germany, what’s it got to offer to win back voters from MAGA and Putin-backed formations? You might ask who is on shakier ground: Germany’s Friedrich Merz or France’s Emmanuel Macron?

How Will the Far-right AfD's Electoral Rise Impact Germany? | Inside Story

Sep 7, 2026 | The Alternative for Germany is on top in Sunday's election in the east German state of Saxony-Anhalt, with about 44 percent of the vote. It's benefited from voters' economic concerns and anger over immigration. The party is also leading in national polls. But Germany's domestic intelligence agency has classified its branch in Saxony-Anhalt as a proven right-wing extremist group, a label the AfD rejects. Chancellor Friedrich Merz insists there can be no co-operation with the AfD, and mainstream German parties have been maintaining a 'firewall' against forming coalitions with the far-right. But it's not clear if the strategy will hold.

The Far-right Win Big in Germany - and It's Sending Shockwaves through Europe

Sep 7, 2026 | Germany’s far-right party has won a major victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, although it remains to be seen whether the AfD will be able to form a government there.

Nevertheless, the result has sent shockwaves not only through Germany, but across Europe too. For the first time since the end of the Second World War, a far-right party could gain power in a German state.

Why is the AfD surging? How much is its success being driven by immigration, economic frustration and anger at the political establishment? And what could its rise mean for Germany’s relationship with Russia, NATO and the EU?

Matt Frei is joined by author and commentator John Kampfner and Dr Sarah Wagner, a researcher in political science at Queen’s University Belfast, to examine whether this is a political blip or a watershed moment for Germany and Europe.

Ratko Mladić, the ‘Butcher of Bosnia’, Given Hero’s Funeral in Serbia

Thousands of mourners have gathered in Belgrade for the funeral of Ratko Mladić, a Serbian general convicted of orchestrating the worst massacre in Europe since the second world war, and whose hero’s return home has raised international alarm.

Known as the “Butcher of Bosnia” for his role during the Balkans genocide in the 1990s, Mladić died in prison in late August aged 84 while serving a life sentence for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Mladić remained a beloved figure among many Serbians, including politicians, and his coffin was flown to Serbia on a government plane, draped in national flags and carried from the plane by uniformed soldiers. As his casket was driven from the airport, men gathered by roads and displayed banners honouring Mladić.

On Monday, thousands of people gathered in front of a small church in the Serbian capital to pay their respects to Mladić. Armed forces stood guard at his casket, on top of which was laid his signature military hat as well as a sword. A display of medals lay in front.

Outside the church, Serbian flags had been hung nearby, and a huge banner unfurled across the street read: “Welcome, General, thanks be to your mother for bearing a hero.” » | Oliver Holmes | Monday, September 7, 2026

Far-right AfD Win in Germany Is ‘Grave Moment’ for Europe, Politicians Warn

Mainstream politicians around Europe have expressed alarm after the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) swept to a historic state election victory in Germany, while nationalist figures cheered the result as a mandate for change.

While falling just short of an absolute majority, the AfD surged into first place in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on Sunday, exit polls showed, putting the far right within reach of power at the state level for the first time since the second world war.

Spain’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, told a party gathering in Madrid on Monday that the result showed that “the extremist threat, largely thanks to the surrender of the traditional right, is gaining ground in Europe and in the world”.

France’s finance minister, Roland Lescure, said it “clearly sends out a very, very worrying signal … This shows that we face a major challenge in the face of a populist wave which is spreading around the world today and which we must resist.”

Lescure’s comments echoed similar remarks on Sunday evening by France’s European affairs minister, Benjamin Haddad, who posted on social media: “To see the far right prevail in the German regional election marks a very grave moment for Europe.” » | Jon Henley | Europe correspondent | Monday, September 7, 2026

AfD Dominates Saxony-Anhalt: A Turning Point for Germany? | DW News

Sep 6, 2026 | The AfD has emerged as the dominant force in Saxony-Anhalt, but election victories do not automatically translate into political power. What drove voters to back the party, and what does the result mean for Germany's political future?

Brent Goff speaks with political correspondents Matthew Moore and Bernd Riegert, DW Berlin bureau chief Max Hofmann, and historian and author Katja Hoyer. They break down the results, reactions from party headquarters, the challenge of forming a government, the pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the wider implications for German politics.

Germany’s Far Right Tops Key State Race, but Falls Short of Power

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Alternative for Germany party is projected to finish first in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. But lacking a majority, without the help of other parties it cannot become the first far-right party to govern a state since 1945.

The Alternative for Germany party dominated a crucial state election on Sunday, according to near-final results, but fell short of the absolute majority that would have made it the first far-right party to govern part of the country since the Nazi era.

If those results hold, the AfD, as the party is known by its German initials, could still assume power in the eastern Saxony-Anhalt state in the coming weeks, depending on the outcome of negotiations among rival parties that have vowed not to support an AfD government.

Saxony-Anhalt is a relatively small state, and the heart of the AfD’s power base in eastern Germany. But the result has sent shock waves through the country’s political system, which was designed after World War II to prevent extremist parties from ever returning to power.

The political establishment has treated the AfD as a pariah, but the party tapped into voter frustration on a wide range of economic and social issues to win about 44 percent of the vote in the state, and was set to claim 39 of the 83 seats in the Parliament.

“We’ve made history, and we’re taking our country back,” Ulrich Siegmund, the party’s candidate to lead the state, told a cheering crowd on Sunday evening. “It all starts here in Saxony-Anhalt.” Live Updates » | Jim Tankersley and Christopher F. Donald Trump's Mother's Life…

Sep 5, 2026 | She left a house with no electricity on the Isle of Lewis at eighteen, alone, and crossed an ocean. The only work waiting for her in America was cleaning other people's homes.

Decades later, people would describe her simply as "regal" — a word that hides almost everything that actually happened to her.

In this video, we look at what's actually documented about Mary Anne Trump — a near-fatal childbirth that barely slowed her household down, a life spent adjacent to enormous wealth she had no real stake in, and a violent assault at seventy-nine that's almost never mentioned in any account of this family.

This isn't a story about a specific villain — there's no evidence Fred Trump was cruel to her. It's a story about how much of one woman's life simply never made it into the record at all, while everyone around her got to tell theirs.

MEGA EPISODE: Third Reich: Inside 12 Years of Terror I SLICE HISTORY

Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor on 30 January, 1933. Once they had seized power in Germany, the Nazis no longer relinquished it until their demise on 8 May, 1945. The Third Reich lasted for 12 years, 3 months and 9 days. It began with great hopes and unprecedented jubilation and ended after a world war in which 50 million people were killed, Germany was destroyed and the European Jews murdered.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the seizure of power by the Nazis, SPIEGEL TV embarks on a unique journey through the bleakest chapter of German history. Michael Kloft traces the story of the Third Reich, painting a picture of Nazi dictatorship behind the propaganda by utilizing what in some cases is previously unpublished footage. In describing the politics, day-to-day life, the war years and the crimes of the Nazi state, he is aided by three famous historians: Sir Ian Kershaw has set worldwide standards with his biography of Hitler, Brigitte Hamann illuminates the background to the fascination with the Fuehrer in her groundbreaking studies and Götz Aly describes the “feel good dictatorship” of the thirties and mercilessly shows how the Germans plundered the rest of Europe in his book “Hitler's Beneficiaries”.

From expedited court dockets to the deployment of new electroshock pain weaponry in the streets, we examine the legal and physical mechanisms powering America's mass deportation engine.

We don’t need history books to find out what life must have been like in Hitler’s Third Reich. All we need do is look across the Pond and observe what is going on in Trump’s Dystopia. That will give you a fair idea of what life must have been like for ordinary Germans under their dictator. It should be pretty clear to all and sundry by now that Trump is competing with his icon, Hitler, for the gold medal in objectionableness!

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini used to refer to the USA as “The Great Satan”, believing that the USA was an imperialist power which was corrupting the world.

Naturally, we all used to think the man was mad for saying this. However, in the light of what is going on in the USA today, perhaps we should all reassess the Ayatollah’s words! — © Mark Alexander
