En allant inaugurer le salon hongrois de la formation professionnelle de Budapest, lundi 25 avril, Viktor Orban n’a pas eu le temps de commenter les résultats des élections françaises, où son alliée, Marine Le Pen, a essuyé une défaite dans les urnes, la veille. « Les forces nationales ont remporté les élections législatives il y a trois semaines avec un soutien sans précédent », a seulement vanté le premier ministre nationaliste, mais c’était au sujet de sa propre réélection, écrasante, le 3 avril. La quasi-totalité des chefs d’Etat et de gouvernement européens, y compris ses alliés polonais, ont pourtant félicité M. Macron dès dimanche soir.

Ce silence n’est pas une surprise. M. Macron a utilisé le souverainiste hongrois comme épouvantail pendant toute la campagne et il n’a toujours pas, lui non plus, félicité M. Orban pour sa réélection. Mais, surtout, la défaite de Marine Le Pen contrarie tous les plans de refonte des droites et les espoirs de chamboulement de l’Union européenne que le chef de gouvernement hongrois partageait avec ses alliés ultraconservateurs au pouvoir à Varsovie. « Le camp souverainiste est devenu une force incontournable de la politique européenne et, nous aussi, nous voulons voir une Europe des Etats-nations », avait espéré M. Orban lors de la visite de Mme Le Pen à Budapest, en octobre. Hungary Election: Viktor Orban's Victory Hailed by Putin

BBC: Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been congratulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin after he won a fourth term by a landslide in the country's general election.

His right-wing Fidesz party had 53% of votes with almost 99% counted.

The opposition alliance led by Peter Marki-Zay was far behind with 35%.

The Kremlin says Mr Putin expressed confidence that the two countries could develop further ties "despite the difficult international situation".

In his victory speech, Mr Orban criticised Brussels bureaucrats and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling them "opponents".

Mr Zelensky has repeatedly criticised Mr Orban's ban on the transfer of arms to Ukraine, with which it shares a border.

Based on preliminary results, the National Election Office said Fidesz would have 135 seats, a two-thirds majority, and the opposition alliance would have 56 seats.

As I stood in a cold, disconsolate crowd in central Budapest late on Sunday night, listening to Hungarian opposition leader Péter Márki-Zay concede defeat in the country’s election, the Twitter feed on my phone filled with images of murdered Ukrainian civilians in the town of Bucha. Some of them had their hands tied behind their backs. Beside one murdered woman lay a keychain with a pendant showing the yellow stars on blue background of the European flag. The Ukrainian horrors are clearly far worse than the Hungarian miseries, but the two are fatefully connected.

It is a bitter irony that, just as we learn of some of the worst atrocities in Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war of terror against Ukraine, Putin’s closest ally among EU leaders, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, is re-elected partly because he turned that very war to his own political benefit. As well as exploiting all the advantages he has already built in to a heavily rigged political system, such as gerrymandered constituencies and overwhelming media dominance, Orbán won by telling Hungarians that he would keep them out of this war – and that their heating bills would stay low due to his sweet gas deals with Putin.

In his victory speech, the Hungarian leader listed the “opponents” he had defeated. They included the international media, Brussels bureaucrats and the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who has criticised him fiercely for his opposition to the weapon supplies and further sanctions that Ukraine desperately needs. So he tells us exactly who his enemies are – and friend Putin has hastened to congratulate him on his famous victory.

If the Hungarian six-party opposition coalition led by Márki-Zay had won, Hungary would have become a staunch western ally in the face of Russian aggression, as other central European countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic are proving to be. “Russians go home!” some youngsters chanted at the very end of that disconsolate opposition wake in Budapest, recalling a slogan from the time of the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. Walking back at midnight across a deserted Heroes Square, I recalled how in that very place in June 1989 I had heard a young, seemingly idealistic Orbán himself call for the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary. Yet now the ageing cynic is flatly refusing to let western arms supplies pass through Hungary in order to help the Ukrainian army send the Russians home. Mar 31, 2022 • Ministerpräsident Viktor Orbán kämpft um die Macht. In Ungarn ist alles auf ihn ausgerichtet: Presse, Wirtschaft und Rechtsstaat. Die Opposition hat es schwer, gegen diesen Machtapparat anzukommen. Doch der Widerstand wächst – im eigenen Land und in der EU. Unsere ZDF-Osteuropa-Korrespondentin Britta Hilpert und Korrespondent Wolf-Christian Ulrich berichten über die aktuelle Lage in Ungarn und darüber, wie das System Orbán das Leben der Menschen in Ungarn beeinflusst.

Ohne zu zögern nimmt Ungarn geflüchtete Ukrainer*innen auf. Das Land, welches eigentlich für eine harte Migrationspolitik bekannt ist, zeigt sich gastfreundlich und hilfsbereit. Die Nähe zu Russland, die Orbán vor dem Krieg pflegte, wird nun überlagert durch Nachbarschaftshilfe – zum eigenen Machterhalt.

Und doch sind die Beziehungen zu Russland für Ungarns Ministerpräsidenten wichtig. Orbán gehört deshalb zu den Bremsern bei EU-Sanktionen gegen Russland. Der Außenminister und Träger des russischen Freundschaftsordens schließt ungarische Hilfe für die Ukraine gar aus.

Um gegen Ministerpräsident Orbán anzukommen, hat sich die Opposition mittlerweile zusammengeschlossen. Vereint wollen sie für ein liberales Ungarn einstehen – ohne russischen Einfluss und Korruption. Denn es sind immer die gleichen wenigen Leute, die in Ungarn das große Geschäft machen.

À en croire les sondages, il n’y aurait plus aucun suspense. Viktor Orban, à la tête de son parti ultraconservateur, le Fidesz, est donné vainqueur par l’intégralité des enquêtes d’opinion. Certaines anticipent même une très large victoire du premier ministre, qui brigue un quatrième mandat consécutif depuis son retour au pouvoir en 2010. «Je n’arrive pas à me souvenir d’un moment où les étoiles ont été si bien alignées à 19 jours des élections», s’est amusé Viktor Orban, illustrant toute la confiance qui habite ses troupes.

Pourtant, ces élections législatives avaient été annoncées comme inédites. Pour la première fois en douze ans, les six principaux partis de l’opposition, incluant les socialistes, les écologistes, les sociaux-démocrates, les libéraux ainsi que l’ancien parti d’extrême droite recentré idéologiquement, se sont unis au sein d’une seule et même coalition. LE FIGARO : La Hongrie doit faire l'objet de sanctions européennes pour sa loi «homophobe» adoptée en juin, a estimé vendredi 8 octobre le secrétaire d'État français aux Affaires européennes qui se rendra mardi à Budapest. «Il y a une loi homophobe très grave qui a été votée en Hongrie à la mi-juin. Sur ce sujet, il peut, il doit y avoir des sanctions juridiques, voire financières», a déclaré Clément Beaune sur BFMTV.

Une décision qui met un point d'orgue à une crise qui oppose la Hongrie de l'ultra-conservateur Viktor Orbán à l'Union européenne sur la question de l’État de droit. Depuis l’été 2020, la bataille fait rage au Parlement européen : alors que le futur plan de relance post-Covid, fruit d’âpres négociations entre les États membres, prévoit de conditionner l’attribution des aides européennes au respect des règles démocratiques, la Hongrie de Viktor Orbán a opposé un veto ferme à ce projet. Soutenu par le gouvernement polonais, le dirigeant ultraconservateur a précipité une crise politique de plusieurs mois, mettant en exergue les tensions à l’œuvre dans une Union qui achoppe sur la question des valeurs fondamentales et de l’État de droit. Face à l’obstruction d’Orbán, l’Allemagne, à la tête du Conseil de l’UE jusqu’à la fin de l’année 2020, s’est résolue à négocier un compromis, permettant la levée du veto polono-hongrois. Opinion: Tucker Carlson Has a New Hero

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Tucker Carlson is only the latest — and most famous — American conservative to find inspiration in the autocratic government of Hungary under Viktor Orban. The Fox News personality is hosting his show, one of the most popular on cable news, from the capital in Budapest and on Saturday will deliver a speech, advertised as “The World According to Tucker Carlson,” to a conference of far-right activists.

To critics, Orban’s Hungary is corrupt, repressive and authoritarian, a place where democracy is little more than window-dressing and the state exists to plunder the public on behalf of a tiny ruling elite. To Carlson, it’s a model for the United States, a showcase for anti-immigrant policies and reactionary cultural politics.

“If you care about Western civilization and democracy and families and the ferocious assault on all three of those things by the leaders of our global institutions,” he told his audience on Monday, “you should know what is happening here right now.”

THE GUARDIAN: Hungary’s prime minister is once again stoking the politics of division ahead of an election

In his victory speech following a third successive election triumph in 2018, Viktor Orbán told jubilant supporters that the result gave voters “the opportunity to defend themselves and to defend Hungary”. For over a decade now, Hungary’s prime minister has skilfully galvanised his political base by cultivating a siege mentality. Three years ago, Muslim migrants were depicted as the enemies at the gates, whose entry would undermine Christian values and traditions. Other targets of choice have included George Soros, NGOs and, the Guardian’s recent Pegasus revelations appear to suggest, critical journalists placed under digital surveillance.

A new election requires a new threat. As Hungary emerges from the pandemic, Mr Orbán and his Fidesz party have entered campaigning mode ahead of a spring poll that is expected to be extremely close. Their baleful gaze has alighted on Hungary’s LGBT+ population and its potential to lead the young astray. Last month, MPs passed a law that prohibits depicting or promoting LGBT+ content to under-18s in Hungary’s schools and the media. The new legislation will heavily restrict the portrayal of LGBT+ people in the arts and entertainment, and elsewhere. Critics have compared it to Russia’s 2013 law against “gay propaganda”, which was duly followed by a disturbing increase in violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. » | Editorial | Tuesday. Viktor Orbán is a relatively short man (1.74m / 5’7”). Why am I not surprised? Dictators throughout history have tended to be on the short side. Adolf Hitler was just about Orbán’s height: 1.75m. Hitler tried to make Germany “judenrein*” in the Thirtie/Forties of the last century; now, we have Orbán trying to make Hungary “schwulenrein” in the Twenties of this century!

‘Judenrein’ means ‘cleansed of Jews’. I have started using the term ‘schwulenrein’, which would mean ‘cleansed of gays’. For surely that’s exactly what Orbán is trying to achieve in Hungary, even if he is not articulating the idea in such a crass way. (He knows better than to do that.) Hungary and Poland are trying to demonize gays and rid their countries of them, or at least push them into the margins of society. Many “LGBTQ-free zones” are even being introduced! It’s truly disgusting. You will probably not be surprised to learn that Orbán is chummy with our Führer: BoJo. Is this a case of 'birds of a feather...'? – Mark

Ungarns rechtskonservativer Regierungschef Viktor Orbán hat ein Referendum über das umstrittene LGBTQ-Gesetz in seinem Land angekündigt und fordert damit Brüssel heraus. In einem auf seiner Facebook-Seite veröffentlichten Video rief Orbán die Bevölkerung am Mittwoch dazu auf, das von der EU scharf kritisierte Gesetz zu unterstützen. Jul 7, 2021 • As new anti-LGBT legislation comes into force in Hungary, despite EU warnings, how can the block deal with Orbán’s increasingly oppressive nature?

Hungary has long sailed close to the wind with its interpretation of European values. But right now, it’s on territory the EU is finding hard to ignore.

The country has introduced new laws banning any material that they say could 'promote' homosexuality in schools. The European commission has called this disgraceful - and an excuse to severely discriminate against people.

But will they go further than words? Ursula von der Leyen warned Viktor Orbán's government to repeal the legislation - or face the full force of EU law. But if Orbán resists - then what? Is this fight - that goes to the heart of what the bloc believes it stands for - one it is willing to have?

Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis is joined by campaigner Tamás Dombos from the Háttér Society.
