Auschwitz Sign Theft: Swedish Man Jailed
BBC: A Polish judge has jailed a Swedish man for two years and eight months for plotting the theft of the "Arbeit macht frei" Auschwitz entrance sign.

Anders Hoegstroem, a former neo-Nazi leader, admitted theft under a plea bargain last month and will be moved to Sweden to serve his sentence.

The infamous sign was stolen in December last year and recovered in three pieces three days later.

The judge in Krakow also jailed two Poles for up to two-and-a-half years.

One of the pair, named as Andrzej S, apologised in court for the offence, Polish media report.

Eine jüdische Geschichtslehrerin ist in Frankreich vom Dienst suspendiert worden, weil sie im Unterricht zu viel Zeit auf den Holocaust verwendet hat. Die Schulaufsichtsbehörde werfe der 58-jährigen Lehrerin aus der ostfranzösischen Stadt Nancy vor, sie habe ihre Schüler einer regelrechten „Gehirnwäsche“ unterzogen und gegen den in Frankreich geltenden Grundsatz der Trennung von Staat und Kirche verstoßen, sagte ihre Anwältin Christine Tadic. Möglicherweise sei der eigentliche Fehler ihrer Mandantin aber, „Jüdin zu sein“.

Die Lehrerin Catherine Pederzoli war unlängst für vier Monate aus dem Schuldienst genommen worden, nachdem es Ärger um eine ihrer Klassenfahrten gegeben hatte. Auschwitz: USA spenden Millionen für KZ-Gedenkstätte
DIE PRESSE: Der Kongress muss die 15 Millionen Dollar für den internationalen Erhaltungs-Fonds für Auschwitz noch freigeben. Außenministerin Clinton bezeichnete den Erhalt als "unverzichtbar".

Euro) in einen internationalen Fonds für Auschwitz einzahlen. The Man Who Smuggled Himself into Auschwitz

BBC: When millions would have done anything to get out, one remarkable British soldier smuggled himself into Auschwitz to witness the horror so he could tell others the truth.

Denis Avey is a remarkable man by any measure. A courageous and determined soldier in World War II, he was captured by the Germans and imprisoned in a camp connected to the Germans' largest concentration camp, Auschwitz.

But his actions while in the camp - which he has never spoken about until now - are truly extraordinary. When millions would have done anything to get out, Mr Avey repeatedly smuggled himself into the camp.

Now 91 and living in Derbyshire, he says he wanted to witness what was going on inside and find out the truth about the gas chambers, so he could tell others. He knows he took "a hell of a chance".

"When you think about it in today's environment it is ludicrous, absolutely ludicrous," he says.

"You wouldn't think anyone would think or do that, but that is how I was. I had red hair and a temperament to match. Nothing would stop me."

He arranged to swap for one night at a time with a Jewish inmate he had come to trust. He exchanged his uniform for the filthy, stripy garments the man had to wear. Stephen Fry's Slur Against Polish Catholics: 'Remember Which Side of the Border Auschwitz Was On'
THE TELEGRAPH – BLOG: Stephen Fry (he is the bore that is a permanent fixture on your television screen but is not Jonathan Ross or David Attenborough) has delivered an insulting attack on Catholics and Poles which grotesquely misrepresents historical fact and which, if levelled at almost any other targets, would probably be characterised as a “hate crime”.

Fry, who joined Labour luvvies in signing an open letter protesting against the Tories’ alliance in the European Parliament with the Polish Law and Justice Party, said on Channel 4 News: “There’s been a history, let’s face it, in Poland of a right-wing Catholicism which has been deeply disturbing for those of us who know a little history and remember which side of the border Auschwitz was on”…

That is beyond outrageous. It slanderously suggests that Auschwitz was run by Polish Catholics, not by German Nazis. “A little history” is right. Just how very little history Fry knows is demonstrated by that crassly ignorant statement. Auschwitz was on Polish soil, ergo it was a Polish institution? As for which side of the border Auschwitz was on, it was actually in Upper Silesia which had been annexed to Germany in 1939. It might, of course, be argued that the Poles built Auschwitz – if slave labour counts.

The first prisoners in Auschwitz were Polish intellectuals and members of the resistance. Altogether, 150,000 Catholic Poles were murdered in Auschwitz, including Saint Maximilian Kolbe. Between two and three million Catholic Poles were killed in the Second World War. Polish pilots fought in the RAF in the Battle of Britain. New Book Reveals Horror of Nazi Camp Brothels
REUTERS: BERLIN - In 1942, the Nazis decided that forced labourers in concentration camps would work harder if they were promised sex -- so they made female prisoners work in brothels for them.

The brothels form the subject of "Das KZ Bordell" (The Concentration Camp Brothel) by Robert Sommer, a book that has been hailed as the first comprehensive account of a little known chapter of Nazi oppression in World War Two.

Sommer's 460-page work, due to be presented at the Berlin state parliament on Wednesday, explores the origins, structure and impact of the "Sonderbauten" (special buildings) run by Heinrich Himmler's SS in Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe.

"In the collective memory and written history of World War Two, the camp brothels were for a long time taboo," the 35-year-old Berliner told Reuters. "The former prisoners didn't want to talk about it: it was a difficult subject to handle.

"It didn't fit so easily into the postwar image of the concentration camps as monuments to suffering."

Beginning with the Austrian camp at Mauthausen in 1942, the SS opened 10 brothels, the biggest of which was in Auschwitz, in modern Poland, where as many as 21 women prisoners once worked. The last opened in early 1945, the year the war ended.

The chapter is separate from the annals of the Holocaust of European Jews. Jewish women were not recruited as prostitutes, and Jewish men were not admitted to the brothels.

Sommer estimates around 200 women inmates in total were forced to work in the brothels -- initially offered the prospect of escaping the brutality of the concentration camps.

"They were promised release after half a year if they served in the brothel. But the promises were never honoured," he said. "Later, the SS just selected women they felt were suitable."

"Jews were not allowed in. Neither were Soviet prisoners of war," he added. "Jewish women did not serve as sex workers."

Tens of thousands of captured soldiers, political prisoners and people branded socially undesirable by the Nazis, including Roma and homosexuals, were held in camps alongside the millions of Jews who died in the Holocaust.

"The idea behind the brothels was to raise productivity by providing forced labourers with added incentive," said Sommer. "Yet from what I found, it didn't work at all. Only a few people were actually in a physical condition to go to them."

France 'Responsible' for Holocaust Deportations, Court Rules

France has officially accepted its role in the Holocaust for the first time – admitting its government freely sent thousands of Jews to their deaths during World War II.

The Council of State, the country's highest judicial body, said the Vichy government of the time held 'responsibility' for deportations.

It ruled that Nazi officials did not force them to betray their fellow citizens, but that anti-Semitic persecution was carried out willingly.

But today's ruling stated there would be no payments for the survivors or families of victims, because all had been compensated 'as much as was possible, for all the losses suffered'.

Thousands of Jews were deported from France to concentration camps during the Occupation, which lasted from 1940 until 1944.

WELT ONLINE: Bislang saß bei der Holocaust-Gedenkfeier im Bundestag stets eine Abordnung des Zentralrats der Juden auf der Zuschauertribüne. Doch diesmal bleibt die Organisation der Feier fern. Man sei in der Vergangenheit missachtet worden, heißt es zur Begründung. Der Zentralrat beklagt zudem eine wachsende Judenfeindlichkeit in Deutschland.

Die Spitze des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland bleibt erstmals der Gedenkfeier des Bundestages für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus fern. Der Generalsekretär des Zentralrats, Stephan J. Kramer, begründete dies im „Tagesspiegel“ mit Missachtung der Organisation in den vergangenen Jahren. Die Vertreter des Zentralrats, die auf der Zuschauertribüne Platz genommen hatten, seien nie persönlich begrüßt worden. Die Gedenkfeier ist im Bundestag für 11 Uhr angesetzt.

Der Zentralrat beklagt laut Kramer einen wachsenden Antisemitismus in Deutschland. Es gebe eine „fortschreitend um sich greifende Feindschaft gegen Juden, mehr und mehr auch in der Mitte der Gesellschaft“, sagte er.

Es sei zwar zu loben, dass in ganz Deutschland in vielen Veranstaltungen an den 64. Jahrestag der Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz erinnert werde, sagte Kramer. „Doch wir mussten auch feststellen, dass während des Gaza-Krieges die Zahl der Hass-Mails an den Zentralrat um 40 Prozent auf 200 bis 300 pro Woche zugenommen hat.“ In einem Zehntel der Mails seien explizite Morddrohungen gegen persönlich benannte Mitglieder des Zentralrats enthalten gewesen. >>> AP/cn | Dienstag, 27. Le président du Front national Jean-Marie Le Pen répète dans une interview au magazine régional «Bretons» paru vendredi qu'il lui paraît «tellement évident» que «les chambres à gaz étaient un détail de l'histoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale». Sa première utilisation de ce mot date de 1987 sur l'antenne de RTL. En 2005 déjà, dans un entretien à la BBC, Jean-Marie Le Pen avait de nouveau employé ce mot.

Dans la suite des échanges avec le journaliste de ce mensuel diffusé en Bretagne et en région parisienne, Jean-Marie Le Pen rappelle le nombre de morts total de la seconde guerre mondiale, en avançant le chiffre de «50 millions de morts». Mais le journaliste l'interrompt, lui disant que «le problème n'est pas de savoir le nombre (de morts) mais la manière dont ils ont été tués», et que l'on a «déporté des gens pour les amener dans des camps juste pour les faire tuer». «Mais ça, c'est parce que vous croyez à ça.
