Rise of Greece’s Golden Dawn: A Presage of Doom
The People’s Association – Golden Dawn — usually referred to simply as Golden Dawn — is a right-wing extremist political organization in Greece. It is led by Nikolaos Michaloliakos, and has grown considerably since its inception to a widely known Greek political party with nationwide support.
Greece’s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn Party is gaining popularity in the midst of the country’s deepening financial crisis. The group has been implicated in torture cases, and for inciting a wave of racial violence sweeping the country.
An opinion poll published by KAPA Research in October showed that support for the extremist political group had grown from 7.5 percent of the population in June to 10.4 percent currently.
The Golden Dawn emerged from political obscurity into the mainstream in May after winning 7 percent of the vote in the Greek parliamentary elections. Since then, the country has reportedly witnessed an upsurge in racial violence connected to the right-wing group.
The party entered the international spotlight after some of its members reportedly participated in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of Bosnian Muslims. Its publication praises the Third Reich and often features photographs of Hitler and other Nazis.
Golden Dawn has manipulated a weak Greek state and disastrous austerity management by European bureaucrats to become, according to recent polls, the third-most popular political party in the country — a noxious omen for the eurozone and a worrying challenge and counterpoint to the very idea of the European Union itself, which received last year’s Nobel Peace Prize. » | Hatef Mokhtar | Thursday, March 14, 2013

Italy: "Fighting in the Name of Allah"
Italian counter-terrorism authorities are monitoring several dozen Italian Muslims who have obtained combat experience in Syria and are now promoting jihad, or holy war, in Italy.
Somewhere between 45 and 50 Italian citizens -- mostly Muslim immigrants from North Africa, but also some Italian converts to Islam -- have been to Syria at least once to fight alongside rebel forces seeking to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Many of these individuals, including several women, have returned to Italy and are using the Internet to spread jihadist propaganda and to communicate with other Islamic radicals.
Some of the Italian jihadists have links with a Belgian Salafist group, "Sharia4Belgium," and are actively seeking to recruit fellow Muslims to overthrow the democratic order in Italy, according to Italian law enforcement officials.
The revelations were made after a 24-year-old convert to Islam, Giuliano Ibrahim Delnevo, became the first Italian to die in Syria. Delnevo, who was raised in a Roman Catholic home in the northern Italian port city of Genoa, converted to Islam at the age of 20 after meeting a woman during a visit to Morocco.
In an interview with the daily newspaper Il Giornale, the director of Italy's Security Intelligence Department (DIS), Giampiero Massolo, said that Delnevo became increasingly radicalized due to exposure to Islamic propaganda on the Internet. » | Soeren Kern | Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Fewer and fewer people remember Egypt as it once was, a glittering romantic metropolis and a genuine regional hub for culture and the arts - it is an Egypt that now only lives in the collective memory of some exiles, the result of dictatorships both republican and Islamic.
Prince Osman Rifaat Ibrahim was barely two years old when his family was forced to leave his native Egypt, after the 1952 Free Officers' revolution. As members of the dynasty of Mohamed Ali, founder of modern Egypt, they had become persona non grata. His father, Prince Amr Ibrahim, was blacklisted as a potential threat to the new order. He had been a high commander of the Special Police during World War II, and enjoyed a great deal of support among certain circles. As a grandson of Mohamed Ali's eldest son, he was viewed as a contender for the throne.
Overnight, their family lost everything, as the state confiscated extensive properties and all of their personal belongings, including priceless antiques and artworks, by order of the Revolutionary Command Council. With nothing left in Egypt, they went into exile, first to Italy and later to Switzerland, where Prince Osman grew up among other Egyptian aristocrats.
Today, like the rest of the world, the 63-year-old prince watches from afar as chaos unfolds in Egypt, wondering whether there will ever be a happy ending to the story that began six decades ago.

Egypt: Islamists Call for Uprising after 50 Shot Dead on the Streets of Cairo
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood has called for a national uprising in response to the deaths of more than 50 supporters of the deposed president, Mohammed Morsi, who were shot dead at a sit-in.
The army said it acted with “wisdom and prudence” after the headquarters of the Republican Guard was, it claimed, attacked by Muslim Brotherhood supporters who believe Mr Morsi is being held there.
But witnesses described being overwhelmed by tear gas and then coming under fire from all sides as protesters camped out in front of the base peacefully finished their dawn prayers at about 3.30am.
“People were still kneeling and suddenly we found that police were approaching and firing tear gas,” said Mustafa Gamal, 21, a law student.
Mohammed Hassan, 36, an agricultural engineer, said: “The police were shooting at us from one side and the army from the other. The guards standing in front of the base were shooting. I saw two people being killed. The bullets entered their heads and came out the side.” » | Richard Spencer, Robert Tait and Magdy Samaan in Cairo | Monday, July 08, 2013

» | Source AFP | lundi 08 juillet 2013

Egypt Unrest: Interim Leader Adly Mansour Calls for Calm
BBC: Egypt's interim leader has expressed sorrow over the deaths of at least 51 people near a barracks in Cairo, urging restraint amid ongoing unrest.
Adly Mansour also said he had ordered an investigation into the deaths.
The Muslim Brotherhood says its members were fired on as they staged a sit-in for ousted President Mohammad Morsi, while the army said "terrorists" tried to storm the barracks.
The Brotherhood's political wing meanwhile called for an "uprising".
The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) - which took nearly half the seats in historic parliamentary elections held in late 2011 and early 2012 - urged Egyptians to revolt against "those trying to steal their revolution with tanks".
It also urged the international community to intervene to "stop further massacres" and prevent Egypt becoming "a new Syria". The movement has accused the army of staging a coup.
Mr Morsi, an Islamist and Egypt's first freely elected leader, was ousted by the army last week after mass protests.
The hardline Salafist Nour party - which had supported Mr Morsi's removal - said it was withdrawing from talks to choose an interim prime minister, describing the shooting incident as a "massacre".
The killings follow an incident in the same location on Friday in which three people died and dozens were wounded as troops fired on crowds. Mr Morsi is believed to be held at the barracks.
In a separate development, the grand sheikh of al-Azhar University, Ahmed al-Tayeb - seen as the highest authority in Sunni Islam - warned of civil war and said he was going into seclusion until the violence was over. (+ videos) » | Monday, July 08, 2013

Muslim Brotherhood Calls for Uprising after Army Kills Dozens in Cairo
The Muslim Brotherhood called on Egyptians to rise up against those who "want to steal" the revolution, a statement by its political wing said on Monday, after some 42 people were killed in shooting outside the Cairo headquarters of the Republican Guard, according to state television, where it is believed that ousted President Mohammed Morsi is being held.
Egyptian state television also reported that an additional 322 people were wounded.
After the shooting, the Muslim Brotherhood said that the chief of the armed forces, General Abel Fattah al-Sisi wanted to drive Egypt to the same fate as Syria. Holding him responsible, the group described the shooting as a "horrible crime" in a statement posted on Facebook.
"(The Freedom and Justice Party) calls on the great Egyptian people to rise up against those who want to steal their revolution with tanks and armored vehicles, even over the dead bodies of the people," a statement on the party's Facebook page said. » | Reuters and The Associated Press | Monday, July 08, 2013

Tony Blair Calls for Intervention in Syria
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Tony Blair has criticised the Government’s failure to intervene in the conflict in Syria as he called for a no-fly zone in the region and said Britain should consider arming the rebels in the country.
Mr Blair, the former Prime Minister, said that the civil war in Syria has caused more deaths that the conflict in Iraq since 2003.
“Personally I think we should at least consider and consider actively a no-fly zone in Syria,” Mr Blair told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
Mr Blair said: “A refusal to engage, as you see from what’s happening in Syria at the moment, where, after all, as a proportion of the population there’s now been more people that have died in Syria in a civil war that shows absolutely no sign of ending than in the entirety of Iraq since 2003. So, you know, inaction is also a policy and a decision with consequence.” » | Peter Dominiczak, Political Correspondent | Monday, July 08, 2013
My comment:
Old Tone has screwed up the UK and made us bankrupt into the bargain, so now he wants us to use the little money we have left to go and screw up Syria too. The hubris of this codger beggars belief. He is supposed to be a peace envoy for the Middle East, but he's more like a warmonger. Further, there's got to be plenty of money in it for him. This man thinks only of himself and his fortune. We should ignore his advice until such time that we can get him tried in the Hague for crimes against humanity. – © Mark

View from Poland: End the Hunt for Snowden
They could find a Saint Helena for him where [Snowden] could live in peace. Meanwhile America, which has been less interested in Europe over the last couple of years, should start rebuilding the tarnished relations with the Old Continent. We have to remember that we are condemned to forever be with each other. America and Europe have common problems with terrorists and the Chinese throwing their weight around. It would be a true catastrophe if we forgot about this just because of the Snowden affair.» | Thursday, July 04, 2013 | [Source: PRESSEUROP]

DM Digital Fined £105,000 over Speech that Condoned Murder for Blasphemy
A British TV channel has been fined £105,000 after it aired a live lecture by an Islamic scholar who allegedly advocated killing people who insult the prophet Muhammad.
Manchester-based station DM Digital, which describes itself as Britain's most-watched Asian channel, broadcast the one-hour programme in Urdu in October 2011.
The Islamic scholar can be heard telling his audience: "I hail those who made this law [Pakistan's blasphemy law] which states that one who insults the Prophet deserves to be killed – such a person should be eliminated."
Ofcom's English-language translation of his lecture suggest he also told viewers: "If someone takes a step in the love of the Prophet, then this is not terrorism." » | Josh Halliday | Friday, July 05, 2013
