Daughter of Putin Ally Alexander Dugin Killed in Car Bomb in Moscow

THE GUARDIAN: Russian hawks without evidence blame Kyiv for death of Darya Dugina and demand Kremlin response

The daughter of an ultranationalist Russian ideologue and ally of Vladimir Putin has been killed in a car bomb on the outskirts of Moscow.

Darya Dugina, whose father is the Russian political commentator Alexander Dugin, died when the Toyota Land Cruiser she was driving was ripped apart by a powerful explosion about 12 miles (20km) west of the capital near the village of Bolshiye Vyazemy at about 9.30pm local time (1930 BST), according to investigators.

Prominent Russian hawks without evidence quickly blamed Kyiv for the attack, calling it an assassination attempt and demanding the Kremlin respond by targeting government officials in Kyiv. “Decision-making centres!! Decision-making centres!!!” wrote Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of the state-funded RT television station, reposting a call to bomb the headquarters of the Ukrainian SBU intelligence agency.

If the car bombing is tied to the war it would mark the first time since February that the violence unleashed on Ukraine has reached the Russian capital, touching the family of a Kremlin ally near one of Moscow’s most exclusive districts. Three Arrested in Connection with Times Square Bombing

THE TELEGRAPH: Three people have been arrested in connection with the failed Times Square car bomb after a series of morning raids in Massachusetts and New York.

The three people have connections to Faisal Shahzad and may have provided him with funds, US Attorney General Eric Holder said.

"These are people who are connected to Mr Shahzad, we're still trying to determine exactly what the nature of that connection was.

"There's at least a basis to believe that one of the things that they did was provide him with funds and so we're trying to trace back" to determine the purpose of those transactions, Mr Holder said, calling the arrests a significant step.

Police cordoned off a small house in Watertown, a suburb about 10 miles west of Boston, where a neighbour reported seeing an FBI raid. >>> | Thursday, May 13, 2010

Pakistani Taliban Behind Times Sq. Plot, Holder Says

THE NEW YORK TIMES: More firmly and publicly than before, senior officials of the Obama administration on Sunday blamed the failed attempt to blow up a bomb in Times Square on the Pakistani Taliban, an accusation that should increase pressure on the Pakistan military to attack the organization in its bastions in the lawless tribal region of North Waziristan.

“We’ve now developed evidence that shows the Pakistani Taliban was behind the attack,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in an interview on ABC television’s news program “This Week.”

Later, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he said the Taliban in Pakistan “directed this plot” and may have also financed it. The Pakistani Taliban, he said, was “intimately involved” in the attempt on May 1 by Faisal Shahzad, an American citizen of Pakistani descent, to blow up gasoline and propane tanks secreted inside a Nissan Pathfinder parked on West 45th Street just yards from the heart of Times Square.

John Brennan, President Obama’s chief counterterrorism adviser, echoed Mr. Holder’s statements Sunday morning, saying that it appeared that Mr. Shahzad, a resident of Bridgeport, Conn., who spent five months in Pakistan until February, was working for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. The TTP is believed by some military intelligence officials to have joined forces with Al Qaeda and may be hiding some of its senior leaders, including Osama bin Laden, who was the motivating force behind the 9/11 attack.

Until now, American officials have speculated that the Pakistan Taliban may have trained Mr. Shahzad during his visit to Pakistan, but Sunday’s statements were their most definitive about the Taliban’s role.

The conclusion that the Pakistani Taliban is behind the attempted bombing “underscores the serious threat that we face from a very determined enemy,” Mr. Brennan said on CNN’s ”State of the Union.” >>> Joseph Berger | Sunday, May 09, 2010

Faisal Shahzad: Accused Times Square Bomber 'Gave Up American Dream for Jihad'

THE TELEGRAPH: Faisal Shahzad seemed like a perfect embodiment of the American Dream but, US prosecutors allege, gave it up for jihad.

The quiet, privately-educated son of an retired air force officer had enjoyed almost textbook success since moving to America in 1998 on a student visa.

He earned a degree in computer applications and, after working at Elizabeth Arden, the cosmetics maker, he found a well-paid job for a financial services company.

Having secured his future in the US by finding an American wife, Huma Mian, the couple and their two young children appeared destined for a life of stable, suburban life in Connecticut. >>> Tom Leonard in New York and Ashfaq Yusufzai in Muhib Banda | Wednesday, May 05, 2010

Pakistanis React to NYC Bomb Plot

R.O.P. Strikes Again*! Times Square Car Bomb: Security Slip Let Faisal Shahzad Board Plane

THE TELEGRAPH: The suspect in the failed car bomb attempt on Times Square was allowed to board a plane and almost make it out of the country despite being on a no fly list, it has emerged.

Faisal Shahzad had boarded a jetliner bound for the United Arab Emirates before federal authorities arrested him. Although under surveillance since midafternoon, he had managed to elude investigators and head to the airport.

The night's events, gradually coming to light, underscored the flaws in the nation's aviation security system, which despite its technologies, lists and information sharing, often comes down to someone making a right call.

As federal agents closed in, Mr Shahzad was aboard Emirates Flight 202. He reserved a ticket on the way to John F. Kennedy International Airport, paid cash on arrival and walked through security without being stopped.

By the time Customs and Border Protection officials, using a no-fly list updated on Tuesday, spotted Mr Shahzad's name on the passenger list and recognised him as the bombing suspect they were looking for, he was in his seat and the plane was preparing to leave the gate.

At the last minute, the pilot was notified, the jetliner's door was opened and Shahzad was taken into custody.

After authorities pulled Mr Shahzad off the plane.

He later claimed to have been trained at a terror camp in Pakistan's lawless tribal region of Waziristan, according to court documents. That raised increased concern that the bombing was an international terror plot.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that Mr Shahzad was cooperating with investigators and had waived his Miranda rights, which grant him the right to a lawyer and full US constitutional legal rights. >>> | Wednesday, May 05, 2010

New York Times Square Bomb: Suspect Arrested Trying to Board Flight to Dubai

THE TELEGRAPH: An American citizen of Pakistani origin has been arrested in connection with an attempted car bombing in New York's Times Square, the US attorney general, Eric Holder, confirmed.

The man was officially named as Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-American, and said he was arrested on Long Island, New York.

Mr Holder said the man was attempting to board a flight to Dubai.

The US attorney general added that investigations were ongoing.

Authorities had launched a massive manhunt with the FBI's terrorism task force and local New York police to try to catch the would-be bomber.

MSNBC said the 30-year-old man had been linked to a sport utility vehicle seized with explosives late Saturday in the busy New York district.

The police sources told US media that the man had recently returned from a trip to Pakistan and three weeks ago paid cash for the Nissan Pathfinder SUV used in the attempted bombing.

It was sold by the vehicle's registered owner in Connecticut about three weeks ago without official paperwork changing hands, police said earlier. >>> | Tuesday, May 04, 2010

Times Square Evacuated After Bomb Is Found

Times Square Car Bomb: Police Investigate South Park Link

THE TELEGRAPH: Police in New York are investigating whether a car bomb in Times Square was targeted on the makers of South Park over a controversial depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.

The device, which failed to detonate, was left near the offices of Viacom, which owns the irreverent cartoon series.

Last month postings on an Islamic website warned the creators of South Park - Matt Stone and Trey Parker - that they could face violent reprisals after an episode of the show featured Mohammed in a bear suit.

A posting on the website of a US-based group called Revolution Muslim warned Stone and Parker that they would “probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh”, the Dutch film-maker who was murdered in 2004 by a Muslim angered by his film about Muslim women.

Images of the Prophet are strictly forbidden in Islam, and Comedy Central, which broadcasts South Park, has banned Stone and Parker from depicting Mohammed in the past. In 2006 the network stopped them from featuring Mohammed in an episode which followed worldwide protests over a caricature of the Prophet by a Danish cartoonist. >>> Nick Allen and Gordon Rayner | Sunday, May 02, 2010

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The police discovered a car bomb in a smoking Nissan Pathfinder in the heart of Times Square, prompting the evacuation of thousands of tourists and theatergoers from the area on a warm and busy Saturday evening.

There was no explosion.

“It appears to be a car bomb left in a Pathfinder between Seventh and Eighth” Avenues on 45th Street, said Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman.

The device, he said, contained “explosive elements” that included “propane tanks, some kind of powder, gasoline and a timing device.”

“This is very much an active investigation,” he said.

Mr. Browne, speaking shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, said that no one was in custody. “We haven’t identified any kind of a motive,” he said. “It appears to be a car bomb, but we haven’t attached a motive to it."

Mr. Browne said the police were checking security cameras after reports that someone had fled from the car. >>> Al Baker and Karin Henry | Saturday, May 01, 2010

Car Bomb Found in London

LONDON (Reuters) - Explosives experts defused a car bomb in central London on Friday and counter-terrorism police said the petrol, gas and nail-packed device could have caused significant loss of life.

The bomb was in a car parked outside a nightclub in the busy heart of London shortly after 1 a.m., when hundreds of people were in the vicinity, Peter Clarke, the head of London's anti-terrorist police, told a news conference.

"It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been significant injury or loss of life," he said. Police find bomb in London (more)
