Poland ‘Closer to Military Conflict Than At Any Time since WW2’ as Nato Allies Weigh Response to Russian Drones
THE GUARDIAN: Donald Tusk says Poland dealing with a large-scale provocation after at least 19 violations of Polish airspace
Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, said the country is closer to military conflict “than at any time since the second world war” as Warsaw and Nato allies weighed a response to an incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace.
Poland scrambled its own and Nato air defences, shooting down at least three drones, as Russia’s attack on Ukraine spread to Nato territory early on Wednesday in the most significant way since the full-scale invasion more than three years ago.
There had been at least 19 violations of Polish airspace overnight, said Tusk, and some of them had entered Poland from Belarusian territory. Four Polish airports, including the two that serve Warsaw, were closed to traffic during the incursion. The prime minister of the Netherlands, Dick Schoof, said F-35 jets from his country took part in the mission to intercept the drones. At least three drones were shot down. » | Shaun Walker in Kyiv, Jakub Krupa and Pjotr Sauer | Wednesday, September 10, 2025

Maduro Tells Trump War With Venezuela Would ‘Stain Your Hands With Blood’
THE NEW YORK TIMES: As U.S. warships and troops gather in the Caribbean, Mr. Maduro threatened an “armed fight” in response to any military action. He also appealed for peace.
President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela has warned that he would respond to any U.S. military action with an “armed fight” and claimed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was trying to draw President Trump into a war in the Caribbean that would mar his reputation.
“Mr. President, Donald Trump,” the Venezuelan leader said on Monday, “watch out, because Mr. Rubio wants to stain your hands with blood.”
Just a day later, on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Trump announced that the United States had conducted a lethal strike in the southern Caribbean, near Venezuela, against a drug vessel that the administration said had departed from the South American nation.
The strike and Mr. Maduro’s statements come amid rising tensions between the two nations. In late August, the United States began moving warships and troops into the Caribbean, near Venezuelan waters — which the Trump administration has said was to combat drug trafficking.
But the size of the military buildup has led to speculation over whether the real goal is to oust Mr. Maduro, through military action or other pressure. » | Julie Turkewitz and Isayen Herrera | Reporting from Bogotá, Colombia and Caracas, Venezuela | Tuesday, September 2, 2025

Trump Moves to Crack Down on Drug Advertising
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The administration is proposing a return to a 1990s-era policy that kept most drug ads off TV. That could dent the revenues of drugmakers and major networks.
President Trump signed a memorandum on Tuesday directing his administration to revive a decades-old policy that is likely to sharply restrict advertising of prescription drugs on television.
The move reflects one of the top priorities of the health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has repeatedly called for a ban on drug advertising on television. The policy change threatens to dent the revenues of pharmaceutical companies.
The memorandum also stands to hit major television networks, which earn substantial revenue from pharmaceutical advertisers trying to reach older viewers.
The proposal, which would effectively reverse a 1997 policy change that opened the floodgates to a deluge of TV drug advertising, is likely to be aggressively opposed by the drug industry, which has long had the courts on its side on this issue. Past efforts to even modestly restrict drug advertising have been blocked by the courts on First Amendment grounds. The White House said it planned to change the policy via a rule-making process. » | Rebecca Robbins, Christina Jewett and Dani Blum | Tuesday, September 9, 2025

Hong Kong Lawmakers Overwhelmingly Reject Same-Sex Rights Bill
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Legislators voted down a proposal that would have given some rights to couples who married overseas. Campaign groups urged the government to try again.
Since the Chinese government imposed a major overhaul of Hong Kong’s political system four years ago, the city’s legislature has been stacked with loyalists who have sided with the administration on almost every issue.
But one law proposed by the Hong Kong government faced opposition from a large number of lawmakers. It aimed to provide recognition of some same-sex partnerships and bestow people in such relationships with new rights, such as the authority to make medical decisions on behalf of their partners.
On Wednesday, 71 of the city’s 89 legislators voted against the bill.
Holden Chow, the vice chair of the city’s largest pro-Beijing party, had said that enacting the bill could “result in dire consequences” for traditional Chinese family values. But Hong Kong Marriage Equality, an advocacy group, urged the government to reintroduce the bill after legislative council elections in December.
Hong Kong does not recognize same-sex marriage. The proposed law would have allowed same-sex couples who married or entered a civil union overseas to register as lawful couples in Hong Kong, and would have extended some rights to them. » | Tiffany May | Reporting from Hong Kong | September 10, 2025

Authoritarianism Feels Surprisingly Normal—Until It Doesn’t
THE ATLANTIC: Life in Venezuela was deceptively mundane. Then everything collapsed.
THE DISINTEGRATION of a democracy is a deceptively quiet affair. For a while, everything looks the same. Each authoritarian milestone—the first political prisoner, the first closure of an opposition media outlet—is anticipated with fear. Then the milestone goes by, and after a brief period of outrage, life continues as before. You begin to wonder if things will be so bad after all.
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the Venezuela of my childhood, during the period when experts and historians warned, on television channels that would later be shut down, that Hugo Chávez was making himself a dictator. They said that his economic mismanagement—the extravagant expenditures, the graft, the attacks on central-bank independence—would cause a severe crisis when oil prices went down.
My family listened to those pundits and believed them, but we didn’t know what to do with that information. My father used to say that living in Venezuela was like driving a car that you know is not being maintained. For now, the car works fine, but one day it will break down. And when it does, the moment to repair the car will have passed.
Substantive change came to Venezuela, but it took time. In 2001, Chávez purged the nationalized oil company of managers and engineers who weren’t politically aligned with him. The company’s embittered ex-employees warned that national oil production would decline, and they were right, but that would take five more years to manifest. Chávez expropriated millions of hectares of farmland, and farmers went on TV to say that a food crisis was approaching. But as long as oil prices were high, supermarket shelves could be filled with imported milk. » | Gisela Salim-Peyer | Tuesday, September 9, 2025

Rudy Rochman: Jew Shuts Down Jew for Jesus
May 27, 2024 | “One of the fundamental concepts of Judaism is to free humanity from idolatry and to bring the understanding of Oneness to all. Although it is forbidden for Jews to proselytize or to attempt to convince non-Jews to become Jews, it is however a Jewish responsibility to counter the practice of idolatry, which sometimes is performed through the belief in just one idol.
Since Christians also believe the Old Testament is the word of G-d (not just the New Testament), Christians do not view themselves to be idolators, since they really think a Jewish man named Yeshu (aka Jesus) was G-d. It is for this reason that that in their perspective Christians do not view themselves as worshiping an idol. What's strange, is that Christians become extremely offended and shocked when they hear Jews (or other non-Christians) call their belief in Jesus a form of idolatry and cannot fathom how others got to such a conclusion.
Well, just as non-Christians must accept the fact that Christians believe Jesus is G-d, even if they disagree, Christians also have to realize that anyone that isn't a Christian and rejects the notion that Jesus is a G-d, will view the belief in Jesus as a G-d as a form of idolatry. Christians may still disagree with this conclusion, but it is not insulting or shocking that non-Christians (including Jews) view Christianity as a form of idolatry.
If Christians want to be given the right to believe in X, they must also respect the right for non-Christians not to believe in X and to be honest with it.
That being said, although Jews who practice Christianity have strayed away from their People's spiritual path, they are not any less fellow brothers & sisters of Am Israel, and Jews should not reject them with hate, but seek to heal them with love. …”
