Russia Bans Jehovah's Witnesses as 'Extremist'

THE TELEGRAPH: Russia has banned Jehovah's Witnesses as an extremist organisation, placing the pacifist sect in the company of neo-Nazi and jihadi groups.

The justice ministry added the Jehovah's Witnesses administrative centre in Russia and 395 local branches to its register of banned organisations on Thursday.

Criminal charges can now be brought against believers for activities such as proselytizing or simply gathering together.

The move was based on an April supreme court decision that declared Jehovah's Witnesses an extremist organisation and ordered its property to be turned over to the state. » | Alec Luhn, Moscow | Thursday, August 17, 2017

George Brandis Attacks Pauline Hanson's 'Appalling' Burqa Stunt

The Australian attorney general, George Brandis, rebukes the One Nation leader, Pauline Hanson, after she enters the Senate wearing a burqa as part of her campaign for it to be banned. ‘Senator Hanson, no, we will not be banning the burqa,’ Brandis says. ‘I can tell you, Senator Hanson, that it has been the advice of each director general of security with whom I have worked and each commissioner of the Australian federal police with whom I have worked that it is vital for their intelligence and law enforcement work that they work cooperatively with the Muslim community and to ridicule that community, to drive it into a corner, to mock its religious garments, is an appalling thing to do and I would ask you to reflect on what you have done.’

They culminated with a person being killed and many injured when a car hit people opposed to a far-right rally. Many echoed House Speaker Paul Ryan who said: "White supremacy is repulsive.. There can be no moral ambiguity." Mr Trump had condemned white supremacist groups on Monday. But on Tuesday he reverted to his initial reaction.

The downfall and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 was hailed as a victory for democracy by some in the international community. Donald Trump reverted to blaming ‘both sides’ for violence at a far right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Violence and disorder between far-right and anti-fascist groups has been widespread across the US since his election as president

US Criticizes Saudi Arabia and Bahrain for Lack of Religious Freedom

US criticizes Saudi Arabia and Bahrain for lack of religious freedom. US President Donald Trump's administration says the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant group remains the biggest threat to religious freedom around the world. The US State Department says the murders of Yazidis, Christians and Shia Muslims at the hands of ISIL amounted to genocide.

The annual report says almost 80 percent of the world's population continues to live under threats limiting freedom to worship.

The countries criticised include US allies Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Al Jazeera's Mohammad Vall reports.

White Nationalist Richard Spencer Talks to Al Jazeera (December 2016)

Richard Spencer is the president and director of the National Policy Institute and is credited with coining the term "alt-right". The movement is a loosely organized far-right group that espouses white nationalism and has shown strong support for US president-elect Donald Trump. Spencer describes alt-right as "the identity politics for white people in the 21st century". Spencer, 38, rose to prominence after a video surfaced of him shouting "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory" at a Washington, DC conference as members of the crowd raised their hands in a Nazi salute. His National Policy Institute is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for promoting white-nationalist views. The institute's mission statement says it aims "to elevate the consciousness of whites, ensure our biological and cultural continuity, and protect our civil rights". "The institute ... will study the consequences of the ongoing influx that non-Western populations pose to our national identity," it says. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey sat down with Spencer in College Station, Texas.

Ta-Nehisi Coates: With a Racist in the White House, the Bloodshed in Charlottesville was Predictable

The nation continues to grapple with the fallout from this weekend’s violence after a Nazi sympathizer drove into a crowd of anti-racist protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one person and injuring 19. President Donald Trump finally condemned white supremacists on Monday for the bloodshed this weekend, after initially failing to directly blame the group. The move followed mounting pressure and severe backlash from nationwide street protests and corporate CEOs who resigned from Trump’s American Manufacturing Council over his failure to quickly condemn the deadly violence. Meanwhile, a Foreign Policy report revealed that an FBI and Department of Homeland Security bulletin concluded that white supremacist groups were responsible for more homicides "than any other domestic extremist movement." Despite these findings, the Trump administration recently slashed funds to organizations dedicated to fighting right-wing violence. To discuss all these developments, we speak with award-winning acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates in his first major interview since the inauguration of President Donald Trump. He is the author of a forthcoming book, due out in October, "We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy."

Report: Crown Prince Wants End of Yemen War

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince has reportedly told two former U-S officials that he wants to end the war on Yemen, which has taken the lives of over 12-thousand Yemenis since 2015.

Middle East Eye says it has obtained emails that show Mohammed bin Salman discussed the issue with a former U-S ambassador to Israel and ex-U-S national security adviser Steven Hadley. In the emails, Prince Mohammed also said he was not opposed to U-S rapprochement with Iran. The conversation took place in May, a month before a Saudi-led group of countries cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of trying to undermine the war on Yemen and for having friendly relations with Iran. The 31-year-old heir to the Saudi throne, who oversees the deadly aggression, has at times accused Tehran of destabilizing the region.

Yemeni Student is Among Thousands to Win US Visa, Only to Have It Effectively Denied by Travel Ban

Thousands of Yemenis and other nationals from countries covered by Trump’s travel ban are currently stranded in different parts of the world as the State Department refuses to honor the fact that they won a U.S. government immigration lottery. Many of the winners have already sold their homes and cars, left their jobs and even relocated in anticipation of their move to the United States. Their eligibility to receive green cards under the program will end only three days after the travel ban is slated to expire on September 27, meaning their applications will likely not be processed in time, which lawyers say operates as an effective ban. We are joined by Hamed Sufyan Almaqrami, 29-year-old Yemeni Ph.D. student in applied linguistics who was awarded a diversity visa in 2016. Due to Trump’s travel ban, he is now stranded in India. Why Is the US Threatening War with North Korea Instead of Pushing for Negotiations?

The war of words between the U.S. and North Korea continues to intensify, with North Korea threatening to strike the U.S. territory of Guam, while Defense Secretary General Mattis warned North Korea’s actions could result in the "destruction of its people." This came after Trump vowed to strike at North Korea with "fire and fury." Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council recently imposed a new round of sanctions against North Korea over its test launches of two intercontinental ballistic missiles last month. We speak with journalist Tim Shorrock, who recently returned from South Korea.

North Korea Promises US Territory of Guam Strike Plan in Days - BBC News

North Korea says a plan that could see it fire four missiles near the US territory of Guam will be ready in a matter of days. State media said Hwasong-12 rockets would pass over Japan and land in the sea about 30km (17 miles) from Guam, if the plan was approved by Kim Jong-un.

It denounced Donald Trump's warnings of "fire and fury" and said the US leader was "bereft of reason".

The US has warned the North its actions could mean the "end of its regime". US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said Pyongyang would be "grossly overmatched" in any war against the US and its allies.

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, who is in Guam, says there is a sense that the North Korean threat is rhetorical, as most people feel that if they really did strike with missiles it would be suicidal for the North Korean regime.

Blackwater Founder Erik Prince Urges Trump to Privatize Afghan War & Install Viceroy to Run Nation

The White House is considering an unprecedented plan to privatize the war in Afghanistan at the urging of Erik Prince, founder of the now-defunct private mercenary firm Blackwater. Prince told USA Today the plan would include sending 5,500 private mercenaries to Afghanistan to advise the Afghan army. It would also include deploying a private air force—with at least 90 aircraft—to carry out the bombing campaign against Taliban insurgents. The plan’s consideration comes as a federal appeals court has overturned the prison sentences of former Blackwater contractors who were involved in a 2007 massacre in Nisoor Square in central Baghdad, killing 17 civilians when they opened fire with machine guns and threw grenades into the crowded public space. For more, we speak with longtime investigative journalist and activist Allan Nairn.

North Korea Threat after Trump Vows ‘Fire and Fury’ | FT World

Tillerson: North Korean Leader Didn't Understand Diplomatic Language - BBC News

North Korea has said it is considering carrying out missile strikes on the US Pacific territory of Guam.

The North's official news agency said on Tuesday the plan involved firing medium-to-long-range rockets at Guam, where US strategic bombers are based.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, flying into Guam, said there was no imminent threat from North Korea. He also defended President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury". Mr Tillerson said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un did not understand diplomatic language, and a strong message was needed that he would understand. "I think the president just wanted to be clear to the North Korean regime that the US... will defend itself and its allies," he said.

The exchanges mark a sharp rise in rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang, but China has urged calm.
