Theresa May bei Donald Trump: Pudel leben gefährlich
Brexit: Can the UK Get a Better Deal? - UpFront
Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's chief negotiator settling terms of the UK's withdrawal, says the EU is not "looking for revenge" and the terms won't be "punitive".
"What we are looking for is a fair agreement in which you can never have outside the European Union a better status than as member of the European Union," says Verhofstadt, who served as prime minister of Belgium.
Asked why 52 percent of Britons voted to leave, Verhofstadt blamed internal partisan politics and anti-immigrant sentiment.

Theresa May's Meeting with Donald Trump 'Could Sour Brexit Negotiations'
Senior European politicians have suggested Theresa May’s meeting with Donald Trump on Friday could sour negotiations over Britain’s departure from the European Union.
Speaking before the prime minister and new president’s meeting in the Oval Office on Friday afternoon, the French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron claimed that Britain could become subservient to the US.
“Britain lived in an equilibrium with Europe,” Macron told France Culture radio. “But now it is becoming a vassal state, meaning it is becoming the junior partner of the United States.” » | Daniel Boffeey in Brussels | Friday, January 27, 2017

Trump Strategist Stephen Bannon Says Media Should ‘Keep Its Mouth Shut’
“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while,” Mr. Bannon said in an interview on Wednesday.
“I want you to quote this,” Mr. Bannon added. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.” » | Michael M. Grynbaum | Thursday, January 26, 2017

Mikhail Gorbachev: 'It All Looks as if the World Is Preparing for War'
But no problem is more urgent today than the militarization of politics and the new arms race. Stopping and reversing this ruinous race must be our top priority.
The current situation is too dangerous.
More troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers are being brought to Europe. NATO and Russian forces and weapons that used to be deployed at a distance are now placed closer to each other, as if to shoot point-blank.
While state budgets are struggling to fund people’s essential social needs, military spending is growing. Money is easily found for sophisticated weapons whose destructive power is comparable to that of the weapons of mass destruction; for submarines whose single salvo is capable of devastating half a continent; for missile defense systems that undermine strategic stability.
Politicians and military leaders sound increasingly belligerent and defense doctrines more dangerous. Commentators and TV personalities are joining the bellicose chorus. It all looks as if the world is preparing for war. » | Mikhail Gorbachev | Thursday, January 26, 2017

Britain’s Theresa May in US: Islam is Peaceful, Globalism Good, Climate Change a Priority
Mrs. May began her speech at the Republican Retreat in Philadelphia with a brief history of Anglo-American relations, invoking the spirit of the Founding Fathers of the U.S. as well as expressing gratitude towards America’s involvement in the World Wars of the 20th century.
But her speech was also littered with politically correct terms, as well as left and centre-left talking points regarding international institutions, Islam, and radical Islamic terrorism, the latter of which she called “Islamist extremism”.
The British premier compared “open, liberal and democratic” societies in the West versus “closed, coercive” ones. She hailed the United Nations, praised the World Bank, and called NATO “the cornerstone” of Western defence. Read on and comment » | Raheem Kassam | Thursday, January 26, 2017

Mexican President Cancels US Visit over Trump's Order to Build Border Wall
Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, has cancelled a scheduled visit to Washington next week to meet with Donald Trump, after the US president signed an executive order to move forward on construction of a border wall and repeated his claim that Mexico would be forced to pay for it.
Peña Nieto tweeted on Thursday that he had informed the White House that he would not attend the meeting with Trump that had been scheduled for Tuesday.
“Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the US to achieve agreements which benefit both nations,” he added. » | David Agren in Mexico City and Ben Jacobs in Philadelphia | Thursday, January 26, 2017

Immer mehr Rechtsextreme in Deutschland
Berlin. Januar 2017
