SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: With a massive surge in asylum applications from people of the Roma minority from Serbia and Macedonia, Germany's interior minister is calling for new rules to expedite processing these cases. Although many come to the EU for better economic opportunities, they also face racial discrimination at home, advocacy groups say.

After observing an extreme rise in the number of asylum seekers from Serbia and Macedonia in recent weeks, Germany's interior minister is calling for tighter rules for processing the applications.

"Those who originate from safe countries, should be provided with reduced cash benefits in the future," Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich, a conservative with Bavaria's Christian Social Union party, told the daily Die Welt.

TRIBUNE DE GENÈVE: La chancelière allemande a rendu hommage aux Roms victimes de l’Holocauste mercredi lors de l’inauguration d’un monument à leur mémoire à Berlin, en promettant de les défendre face aux discriminations actuelles en Europe.

"Ce monument nous rappelle un peuple trop longtemps oublié. (...) L’hommage aux victimes comprend aussi une promesse, celle de protéger une minorité, un devoir pour aujourd’hui et demain", a déclaré Mme Merkel devant des survivants Roms des camps de concentration, leurs familles, et des élus allemands.

"Les Roms souffrent encore aujourd’hui de discrimination et de rejet, ils doivent aujourd’hui encore se battre pour leurs droits. SPIEGEL ONLINE: In Ungarn sind mehr als tausend Rechtsextremisten gegen die Roma-Bevölkerung aufmarschiert. Mit Fackeln zogen sie durch deren Siedlung in der Stadt Miskolc. Zuvor hatten hunderte Roma gegen Diskriminierung protestiert.

Miskolc - In der ostungarischen Stadt Miskolc hat es erneut scharfe Proteste gegen dieRoma in der Plattenbau-Siedlung Avas gegeben. Mehr als tausend Rechtsextremisten demonstrierten dort am Mittwochabend. Aufgerufen zu der Kundgebung hatte die rechtsradikale Parlamentspartei Jobbik (Die Besseren). Unter den Teilnehmern waren auch uniformierte Mitglieder der verbotenen, para-militärischen Ungarischen Garde. Der Jobbik-Vorsitzende Gabor Vona erklärte in seiner Ansprache unter Anspielung auf die allgemein höhere Geburtenrate unter Roma: "Wer nicht arbeitet, soll nicht Kinder in die Welt setzen." Le pape a invité l'Europe à empêcher que les peuples roms ne soient encore l'objet de «vexations», de «refus» et de «mépris» en rappelant l'extermination «barbare» et «trop peu reconnue» des gens du voyage sous le nazisme, au cours d'une rencontre historique.

Venus pour les deux tiers venus d'Italie, Roms et Tziganes étaient à Rome pour célébrer le 150e anniversaire de la naissance et le 75e anniversaire du «martyre» pendant la guerre civile espagnole du Tzigane Zeffirino Gimenez Malla, béatifié en 1997 par Jean Paul II. A cette occasion, le pape a eu l'idée de cette rencontre.

«Vous êtes un peuple, qui, dans les siècles passés, n'a pas vécu d'idéologies nationalistes, n'a pas aspiré à posséder une terre et à dominer d'autres gens. Vous êtes restés sans patrie et avez considéré idéalement le continent entier comme votre maison», a dit le souverain pontife.

«L'Europe, qui abaisse ses frontières et considère comme richesse la diversité des peuples et des cultures, vous offre de nouvelles possibilités», a-t-il plaidé. Pour une bonne intégration, une «collaboration effective et loyale» est nécessaire, afin que «vos familles s'insèrent dignement dans le tissu civil européen». Ein Sprecher der Regierung in Berlin hat am Freitag Äusserungen des französischen Präsidenten Sarkozy dementiert, wonach auch Deutschland die Räumung von Roma-Lagern plant. Der Sprecher sagte, Bundeskanzlerin Merkel habe weder im Europäischen Rat noch im Gespräch mit Sarkozy über angebliche Roma-Lager in Deutschland, geschweige denn über deren Räumung gesprochen. Nicolas Sarkozy Hits Back at Critics of Roma Expulsions
THE TELEGRAPH: Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, has angrily denounced "disgusting" comparisons of his Roma expulsion policy with Second World War round-ups of Jews and claimed that all European leaders supported his campaign against illegal gipsy camps.

Mr Sarkozy was involved in a "fierce and heated" argument with Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President as the dispute over France's expulsion of Roma dominated an EU summit on Thursday.

"The disgusting and shameful words that were used - World War II, the evocation of the Jews - was something that shocked us deeply," he said.

Viviane Reding, the EU's justice commissioner, earlier this week condemned President Sarkozy's treatment of Roma gipsies as a "disgrace" that reminded her of wartime Vichy France's collaboration with Nazi deportations of Jews and gipsies.

"Europe is unanimous that the Roma issue is extremely worrying," said Mr Sarkozy.

Frankreich: Roma-Ausweisung beginnt trotz Kritik
DIE PRESSE: Am Donnerstag werden 79 Roma ausgewiesen. Sie verlassen Frankreich nach Regierungsangaben freiwillig. Rumänien warnt Paris davor, Roma nicht "kollektiv" und "aufgrund ethnischer Kriterien" auszuweisen.

Nach der Räumung von mehreren Dutzend Romalagern steht am Donnerstag in Frankreich die erste Ausweisung von zunächst 79 Betroffenen bevor. Die Gruppe soll nach Medienberichten vom Mittwoch nach Rumänien geflogen werden.

Sie verlässt Frankreich nach Regierungsangaben "auf freiwilliger Basis", nachdem jedem der Ausreisenden 300 Euro pro Person sowie 100 Euro für jedes minderjährige Kind gezahlt wurden. Italy Condemned for Wave of Racism
BBC: Human rights group Amnesty International has said it is extremely alarmed by what it calls a "climate of discrimination" in Italy.

The Italian section of the rights body said recent tough new immigration measures were a worrying trend.

It added that politicians from both sides of the spectrum were legitimising the use of racist language.

Last week, Italy's new centre-right government introduced a series of measures aimed at improving security.
