Trump Ends Aid to Colombia and Calls Country's Leader a 'Drug Leader'

BBC: President Donald Trump said the US will no longer offer subsidies to Colombia, one of the country's closest South American allies.

The US president announced the decision in a Truth Social post on Sunday, labelling Colombia's President Gustavo Petro as "an illegal drug leader" who has "strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia".

His comments come after Petro accused the US of committing "murder" when it carried out a military strike on a boat in Colombian territorial waters in September.

The move is the latest in a string of escalating tensions between the US and countries in Latin America, as the US military continues to strike ships in the Caribbean Sea it alleges carry drugs. » | Ana Faguy and Kathryn Armstrong | Saturday, October 18, 2025

Burqa Ban Battle in Europe: Where and Why? | Why Italy is Banning Burqa | WION WIDEANGLE

Oct 16, 2025 | From Italy to France to Switzerland, countries across Europe are grappling with the issue of the 'Burqa Ban'.

Italy’s ruling party, the ‘Brothers of Italy’, is pushing a bill to ban burqas and niqabs in all public spaces. Under the proposed legislation, violators could face fines ranging from $350 to $3,500.

In April 2011, France became the first European country to implement a ban on full-face veils in public areas.

However, some countries, like Afghanistan, have made wearing a burqa a religious mandate.

Thieves Steal Jewels of 'Incalculable' Value in Heist at Louvre Museum in Paris | BBC News

Oct 19, 2025 | The Louvre Museum in Paris has been closed following a robbery, France's culture minister says. Rachida Dati wrote on X that the robbery happened on Sunday morning as the museum was opening. She said she was at the site, where police are investigating.

The museum confirmed it was closing for the day "for exceptional reasons," without providing further details.

French media reports say jewellery has been stolen, after three masked men reportedly used a freight lift under renovation to access the Apollo Gallery, where what remains of France's crown jewels are kept.

The gallery is on the side of the River Seine. The thieves are said to have broken windows to gain entry before escaping on motor scooters. They also had chainsaws. The value of the stolen items is not yet known.

‘Priceless’ Jewellery Stolen from Louvre in Raid by ‘Experienced’ Thieves

THE GUARDIAN: French minister says highly professional criminals used angle grinder to access one of museum’s most ornate rooms

“Priceless” historic jewellery has been stolen from the Louvre in Paris after a highly professional robbery by men who used an angle grinder to break through glass and enter one of the museum’s most ornate rooms.

The world’s most-visited museum was suddenly closed for the day after the break-in targeted pieces in two glass cases in its Apollon gallery, where the French crown jewels are held.

The French interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, visited the scene and told France Inter radio that “priceless” jewels “of unmeasurable heritage value” were stolen after what was clearly a well-organised raid. » | Angelique Chrisafis in Paris | Sunday, October 19, 2025

‘No More Trump!’: Protesters Denouncing the President Unite Across the Country

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Large crowds turned out at ‘No Kings’ rallies on Saturday that took place in large cities and small towns nationwide.

They were teachers and lawyers, military veterans and fired government employees. Children and grandmothers, students and retirees.

Arriving in droves across the country in major cities and small towns, they appeared in costumes, blared music, brandished signs, hoisted American flags and cheered at the honks of passing cars.

The vibe in most places was irreverent but peaceful and family-friendly. The purpose, however, was focused. Each crowd, everywhere, shared the same mantra: No kings.

Collectively, the daylong mass demonstration against the Trump administration on Saturday, held in thousands of locations, condemned a president that the protesters view as acting like a monarch.

Many had attended a similar event in June, but the months since had seen President Trump make a dizzying array of changes in quick succession.

This time, the crowds included a new round of protesters, those who said they were outraged over immigration raids, the deployment of federal troops in cities, government layoffs, steep budget cuts, the chipping away of voting rights, the rollback of vaccine requirements, the reversal on treaties with tribes and the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill. » | Corina Knoll | Published: Saturday, October 18, 2025. Maga Is Damaging America’s Reputation

THE OBSERVER: By embracing self interest, the US is betraying its responsibilities and alienating allies

For most of the postwar years, America has been the rock upon which democracy prospered. Its influence was overwhelmingly benign when President Truman committed to “support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressure”. So was it when, more than a decade later, President Kennedy committed to confront “the common enemies of man – tyranny, poverty, disease and war”.

The purpose behind these noble sentiments was to create a freer and safer world, in which the strong pledged their help to the weak. No price was asked for this. No deal demanded. No investment or payment expected. It was high politics in a harsh world, when to help others was not seen as a business opportunity.

This approach, it seems, is now out of fashion. Today, the United States has a less altruistic policy. The president’s ambition is to “Make America Great Again” – although it is puzzling that being the richest and most powerful nation in the world is not already seen as an indication of greatness.

In the Maga quest, the US has embraced national self-interest. Donald Trump, with the support of the world’s richest man, abruptly cut off aid to the poorest people in the world and those organisations whose role is to cure the diseases that most afflict them.

The long-term implications of this are dire. A report in the Lancet tells us that US aid alone prevented more than 4 million deaths – one third of them children – in every year of the first two decades of this century. That support has gone. » | John Major | Saturday, October 18, 2025

Millions across All 50 US States March in No Kings Protests against Trump

THE GUARDIAN: Events scheduled in more than 2,700 towns and cities, aligning behind message that US is sliding into authoritarianism

Americans across all 50 states began marching in protests against the Trump administration on Saturday, aligning behind a message that the country is sliding into authoritarianism and there should be no kings in the US.

Millions of people have turned out for the No Kings protests, the second iteration of a coalition that marched in June in one of the largest days of protest in US history. Events are scheduled for more than 2,700 locations, from small towns to large cities, reflecting a decentralization in an anti-Donald Trump protest movement that focused on demonstrations in Washington DC during his first presidency.

The rallies are a turnaround from just six months ago, when Democrats seemed at a loss as to how to counter Republicans’ grip of the White House and both houses of Congress after stinging national election losses.

“What we are seeing from the Democrats is some spine,” Ezra Levin, a co-founder of Indivisible, a key organizing group, told the Associated Press. “The worst thing the Democrats could do right now is surrender.”

In Chicago, at Grant Park’s Butler Field, at least 10,000 people assembled, many with signs opposing federal immigration agents or mocking Trump. TV stations with feeds from protests warned viewers they could not be responsible for the language used in the signage.

Some of them said “Hands Off Chicago”, a rallying cry that began when the president first announced his intent to send the national guard into the city. Others read “Resist Fascism”, but many others used language unsuitable for broadcast.
